An early look at summer fun
Martin Carlino
martin@northbrooktower.com
As rain poured
down and temperatures
dipped way
lower than they should be
at this time of the year,
I couldn’t help but set
my sights on better times
ahead.
In my defense, it was
hard not to do so, especially
after putting the
finishing touches on our
annual summer fun guide
calendar — which you
should keep an eye out for
in the coming weeks.
So, in light of my
optimistic thinking, and
maybe yours as well,
here’s an early look
ahead at just some of the
countless great events
throughout Northbrook
this summer.
• St. Norbert Block Party
Opt in for fun at this
classic start of summer.
The annual block party at
St. Norbert (Walters Avenue
and Meadow Road)
features activities beginning
at 8 a.m. June 9, with
a kids fun run and a 5K.
Afternoon festivities start
at 3 p.m. And, live bands
will be performing all day.
For more information,
visit stnorbertblockparty.
• Northbrook’s Fourth of
July Parade
Does any event bring
out the best of summer
quite like the Fourth of
July? This annual tradition
will bring floats through
downtown Northbrook.
Make sure to keep an eye
out for more information
as this gets closer. A full
lineup of festivities should
be announced in early
June.
• Second annual Eggfest
You’ll want to bring
your appetite for this one.
Come and taste creations
from various chefs on
Sunday, July 7, near the
Ace Hardware parking
lot in Northbrook. With a
year of experience under
its belt, you won’t want to
miss year two.
• Northbrook Days
Few events can bring
together the Northbrook
community quite like
Northbrook Days. Volunteers
across the community
come together
for five days and put on
an exciting festival for
residents of Northbrook
and surrounding towns.
This year’s annual festival
will take place Aug. 1-5,
giving you plenty of time
to stop by for some summer
fun.
We could fill up pages
of The Tower with all the
summer events happening
throughout Northbrook.
Unfortunately, we can’t
do so here, but in just a
few weeks, you’ll find our
full list of summer events
in print. And for even
more fun, you’ll find extra
events online at NorthbrookTower.com.
An intriguing number from this week’s edition
For the second year in a row,
the Glenbrook North math team
captured the state championship
on May 5. For the team’s full
story, please see page 3.
NFYN
From Page 25
in Waverly, Iowa, after
searching for a new team
for more than a year.
“There is a decline in the
number of draft horses, so
good teams are difficult to
find,” said Todd Price, director
of Historic Wagner
Farm.
Bill and Bob stand about
17.2-hands high and each
weigh in at just over a ton.
They’re Percheron geldings,
9 and 10 years old.
Percherons are an aweinspiring
breed, known for
their intelligence and muscular
appearance.
“Going into the search,
there were a number of criteria
that were important to
us,” Price said. “Disposition,
age, gender, farm and
wagon experience, and
good with people. Bill and
Bob checked all of those
boxes and more.”
The brothers are from an
Amish farm in Minnesota
and have worked in teams
of two-, three- and fourhorse
hitches in a public
setting and alone on the
farm. The goal is to transition
them into the primary
team at Wagner Farm.
Farm staff are getting to
know Bill and Bob as they
feed and groom the horses.
THE GLENCOE ANCHOR
Park District’s beehives to
produce pounds of honey
this season
There’s a sticky situation
happening at the
Glencoe Park District.
For the first time ever,
the Park District is housing
nearly 20,000 bees in
two new hives behind Jerry
Reinsdorf Field in the
greenhouse area. The bees
will generate an estimated
50-80 pounds of honey
this season.
