THE HOME
The living room is where most people spend their time. It’s where you watch
TV as a family, where you entertain guests, and where, at the end of a long day,
you flop onto the sofa and just chill. A good comfy sofa is the centrepiece of the
room, and as much as a lived-in bulk of foam may have a sentimental value to you – or
just be so cosy you don’t want to part with it – having a well-designed statement piece
will make the room.
Sofas aren’t cheap however so you’ll want to invest wisely. That’s not to say that
once you’ve picked and paid for one that you’re stuck with your choice indefinitely.
With some careful planning, you can ensure what you fork out for a sofa befits the use
you get out of it.
Essentials things to consider
Use
By considering the purpose of your sofa, it will help you to determine the size of budget
you should allocate to this important purchase. Is this sofa a long-term investment or a
short-term purchase? If you’re moving out into your own albeit rented place, it’s likely
your sofa will need to change as your needs do. If you have children, it’s likely your sofa
will have a shorter lifespan. But if you’re several switches in and have finally moved into
that forever home, then consider something that will last.
Size
Measure the size of the sofa. This is so it fits the room and through any doors or up
stairs when you’re moving it in. The scale of your sofa should match its surroundings,
which will be important when you start to add other furniture pieces. If your room is
small, one sofa should suffice. Select one that provides the illusion of space – a base that
is on legs and off the ground for example. A low-back sofa provides a visual of the wall
and suggests a larger living room.
If your room is large you can consider two identical sofas facing off against
each other with a coffee table in the middle. Alternatively add a chair or two to the
combination.
“The scale
of your sofa
should match its
surroundings,
which will be
important when
you start to add
other furniture
pieces.”
