POCKET WATCH & PETTICOATS
IndependentBusinesses
Putting the ‘WOW’ in your Town! We managed to chat with Sophia
and Adrian, AKA Mr and Mrs Petticoats from award winning Pocket
Watch & Petticoats based in Suffolk, about the importance of
Supporting local businesses and shopping ‘Indie’ where you can.
For our readers that may be
hearing your name for the first
time, describe Pocket Watch &
Petticoats.?
The fashion of the 1940s and 50s was
incredibly elegant, feminine and showed of the
female form to perfection. We cater for ladies
from a size 6 to 26 and the ladies that shop
with us are of all ages.
We like to keep our beautiful boutiques bursting
with outfits for all occasions from casual daywear to
elegant evening attire.
We noticed you have won awards!
What were they for?
We won ‘Best Independent Business’ in Suffolk after
only seven months retailing in Ipswich. We couldn’t
believe it!
We have teenagers just finding their feet with
an individual style to Rock and Rollers in the
late 80s which remember this style the first
time around!
Swing dresses, wiggle dresses, high waisted
trousers or knitwear, pencil skirts, swing
coats… You name it we have it!
We were then equally stunned when we won ‘Best
Independent Retailer’ for a second year for our
Bury St Edmunds boutique. We pride ourselves at
offering exceptional customer service every time
you’re in the store, and the ladies that work for us
are absolute gems! So knowledgeable and friendly.
It’s why we don’t sell online as we like to offer an
experience!
Myself, Adrian and our talented staff take the
unique shopping experience with lots of T.L.C.
We Normally pick an outfit for a lady and it’s the
love with it. We treat everyone how they deserve
to feel...special! We meet our ladies as strangers
but we definitely leave being friends!!
BY ZEE BATTERSBY
I’m not old i’m
retro
Check out my new
look fashion website
imnotoldimretro.co.uk
Well hello there! I’m back with my monthly column… OK, so firstly a reminder
about me. I’m Zena (Zee for short), I’m 45, a mother and a grandmother.
So turning 45 this year was a bit of a
milestone.
I often think about how
women are treated in the
media and I think we get
a bit of a raw deal to be
honest.
Especially where make up
concerned.
I’ve been on a bit of a
mini crusade to highlight
this fact. Make up when
you’re reaching your 40’s
and 50’s is a far cry from
your middle years. Your skin
is changing and you need to be more
aware of the products you put on and
the make up you are using.
Skincare has come on so much since I
started working in the beauty industry
in my 20’s and I really did take my skin
for granted.
I’ve been asking celebrity
make up artists why they
use young women in
their demonstrations and
marketing.
Anyone can make young
skin look amazing.
Why not use older models
to plug their brands and
their make up skills but
make a tired mum over
40 look incredible and
you will have an army
of women buying and
following your brand.
Am I right?
A few have responded and openly admit
it’s the hardest skin to work on. One
company that freely came to my aid were
Mii.
14

JULY 2018 JULY | 2018 ISSUE | ISSUE #69 | #69 FASHION
FASHION
Mii are a sister company of Jessica
Nails and if you’re a regular at a
spa salon, you’ve probably heard of
Jessica.
They are a ‘salon only’ brand. .
Plus, they are 100% VEGAN with a
low carbon footprint.
The make up is mineral based and I
have to say beyond amazing!
I’m a Bare Minerals customer and
they have always been my go to
brand. However, my views have
now completely changed. Its an
affordable price point too because
I’m always big on a budget.
It’s worth investing in good
foundations, a bit like building a
house!
My night look
using Mii make up
Get your skincare sorted... Find
a good primer, then add your
foundation.
Being older, your skin will change
in colour and texture, so its best
to get some advice from an in
salon Mii make up artist.
All local stockists are listed over
on my blog with a more in-depth
breakdown of the range and
what I’m using along with info on
Mii as a company. Is it time you
gave your over 40 skin a revamp?
Are you fed up with the shine and
uneven skin tone? Oh and not to
mention the hot flushes (or as I call
them power surges!) Then get over
to my blog and read on!
GREENE & GREENE
Solicitors: 125 Years Young…
2018 marks the 125th Anniversary
of Greene & Greene Solicitors.
The Bury St. Edmunds firm was founded in
1893 by John Wollaston Greene, who shortly
after was joined by his brother, Kenneth
Wollaston Greene, consequently
creating the name of the firm that it
has kept to this day.
Greene & Greene has retained
its roots in the town, but has
extended its reach throughout
East Anglia and to other parts of
the country.
Reputation and recommendations from others
are just two of the key factors that individuals
and corporates look for when deciding upon a
solicitor, whether it be for a property purchase,
a family or matrimonial matter, a business
transaction or for advice on the preparation
of a will.
Independent legal directories recommend
Greene & Greene in each of the key areas
in which it practices and recognise the firm
as “one of the leading practices in the
region” with “exemplary client
service”.
The size of the firm has increased
over the years to more than 80
staff, with over 30 experienced
lawyers and 12 partners, who each
offer a high level of professional
expertise and specialised advice.
Here’s to another 125 years!
WeddingAngel
Bridesmaid Roles and Duties...
BY LISA MARIE SMITH
Just like the bride,
you’ve said “yes!”, but
what are the official
bridesmaid roles and
duties?
Crucially, what exactly have you
really let yourself in for?
Being a bridesmaid is all about
supporting your best friend on the
biggest day of her life: from helping
her into her wedding dress on the
day to throwing an ace hen party
and providing invaluable moral
support to tame any bridezilla
moments. But not all bridesmaid
roles and duties are silk and pink
roses. In some cases, it can be like
having your own part-time job.
The maid of honour is technically in charge of planning the
hen party and bridal shower, but as a bridesmaid you will be
expected to bring ideas to the table too. From coordinating
guests to ordering catering - this is where your fantasy as a
party planner can come true. Remember: this day is all about
the bride and what she wants, so (as goes across the board), if
you don’t like it, you may just have to go along with it. Here are
a few things you may have to fulfil as a bridesmaid.
1. Attend the engagement party and rehearsals...
As a bridesmaid, you will be expected to attend all pre-wedding
events. That means: bridal shower, hen party, wedding rehearsal,
dinner… not to mention wedding dress shopping and general
weekend crisis planning meetings. See, we did say it was
like a part-time job! Be one step ahead - and handle
a bridezilla.
If you’re a maid of honour or chief bridesmaid, this is where
your friendship really comes into play. From being constantly
reachable on the phone (yes, last minute panics over whether
white roses really are the right choice do happen) to premeditating
the bride’s needs, you’ll be. But take it in your stride:
and keep a note of her wedding-day make up so you can have
extras in your clutch to touch her up if she forgets.
18

WEDDING
JULY 2018 JULY | 2018 ISSUE | ISSUE #69 | #69 WEDDING
2. Take on a supporting role at the
wedding ceremony...
Those pre-wedding nerves are inevitable
and on the day you’ll be a calming
influence for the bride. Have a few
nostalgic stories up your sleeve to help
her relax as you help her into her dress.
After getting the bride out of the car
and making sure her dress looks onpoint,
you’ll follow her up the aisle and
sit or stand to her left at the front of
the congregation. If you’re the maid-ofhonour,
you’ll take her bouquet and look
after it until the leaving procession. It’s
a good idea to keep tissues in your bag
should there be any tears of happiness
near you!
3. Be the life and soul of the reception...
There will inevitably be a bonding
moment of holding the bride’s dress
when she goes to the loo. But after
all that: you’ve earned that glass of
Champagne. To the dance floor!
4. The day after ...
As the saying goes, what goes up must
come down again - and the same rule
applies to wedding decorations the next
day.
My last tip...
No matter how fuzzy your head is from
the night before, flash your best smile,
pop on a playlist you and the other
bridesmaids love and get to work.
After all, many hands make light work
and the bride will really appreciate help
tidying up her venue.
Until next time...
Lisa x
Billy Walker
the Box Office
Champion...
JULY 2018 | ISSUE #69
BY RALPH OATES
A series of articles which will feature boxing facts
from both the past to the present...
During his career heavyweight
Billy Walker was a promoters
dream. When Walker was in
action there were few if any
empty seats in the house. The
man always came to fight win or
lose he would give it everything
he had in the ring. Billy was
loved by the fans who gave him
great support.
Billy who won the Amateur
Boxing Association heavyweight
title in 1961 was born in London
on the 3rd March 1939. When
he turned to the punch for pay
code Walker was managed by
his older brother George who
was himself a former fighter
having participated in the lightheavyweight
division.
Billy made his much anticipated
debut in the professional
ranks on the 27th March 1962
stopping opponent Jose Peyre
of Belgium in round five of a
scheduled eight at the Empire
Pool Wembley London. In the
years which followed Walker
crossed gloves with fighters
such as Thad Spencer, Johnny
Prescott, Joe Bygraves, Joe
Erskine, Brian London, Eduardo
Corletti, Giulio Rinaldi and Ray
Patterson.
Billy had two cracks at a major
title during his career which
ended in failure. The first tilt at a
championship came on the 21st
March 1967 against Germany’s
world ranked Karl Mildenberger
for the European heavyweight
crown the venue being the
Empire Pool Wembley London.
From the start this looked to be
a difficult task for the Londoner.
Mildenberger was a competitor
who had fought at the highest
level and was favoured to
emerge the victor from this
meeting. Walker was not fazed
by the champion’s reputation
and attacked from the start.
Walker’s brave efforts however
proved futile since Mildenberger
retained the title by stopping
him in eight rounds in a bout
set for 15.
The second chance to win a
championship came on the 7th
November 1967 once again the
venue was the Empire Pool
Wembley London. Walker was
to do battle with the formidable
and experienced Henry Cooper
for the British & Empire
heavyweight titles.This was
another tough fight for Billy.
Cooper like Karl Mildenberger
was world rated and had mixed
it with the very best during his
time in the ring. Billy gave it his
all but came up empty when the
bout was stopped in Coopers
favour by the referee in round
six of a scheduled 15.
Walker’s career came to an end
on the 25th March 1968 when he
was matched with Jack Bodell
who stopped him in the eight
stanza of a scheduled ten. Both
men hit the canvas during the
exciting encounter. Walker may
have lost the fight but he went
out on his shield a warrior to the
end. Walker had all the heart
in the world. It was only fitting
that Billy’s last fight should end
where it started at the Empire
Pool Wembley London.
Many fighters over the years
have sadly made ill advised
come-backs to the sport after
retiring only to find that they
could not recapture their past
form often losing to opponents
whom they would have easily
beaten when at their peak.
Gladly Billy did not take that
route he took the sensible view
that once he retired he stayed
retired.
True Walker did not win a
professional title during his
paid career but it should not
be forgotten that Billy did earn
the distinction of being the
undisputed champion at the
box-office.Walker continued to
contribute to boxing when in
retirement later becoming an
Honorary Steward of The British
Boxing Board of Control.
Billy Walker was without doubt
a credit to British boxing
retiring from the sport with a
record of 31 contests winning 21
drawing two and losing eight.
FEATURE FEATURE
JONNY QUINN - SNOW PATROL
Rachel Ducker speaks to drummer, Jonny Quinn, about his time in
the band, and their new album ‘Wildness’…...
On May 25th, Snow Patrol will return with
Wildness, their first album in seven years,
which finds the band searching for clarity,
connection, and meaning, while staying true
to the melodic songwriting prowess that
brought them to prominence.
have some sun where you are?
Yeah, yes it is!
R: I’m going fire straight into the questions.
How did you first get into music?
Wildness taps into something raw and
primitive, and lead-singer and songwriter
Gary Lightbody says of the album:
Well, I heard a record, which was by The
Police – ‘Message in a Bottle’, and I thought ‘I
want to be a drummer’ after hearing that.
“There are many types of wildness, but I
think it can be distilled into two: the wildness
of the modern age, all it’s confusion, illogic
and alienation and a more ancient wildness.
Something primal, alive and beautiful
that speaks to our true
connectivity, our passion,
our love, our communion
with nature and each
other. This is the kind
of wildness the album
is centered around. The
loss of it.
I grew up with lots of record shops around
me; I used to hang out in them and ended up
working in one. I think I’ve always wanted to
be in music, but back then, not really realizing
it could be a real career and it turned out it
was.
R: What were you doing before
you were in the band?
I was putting on little gigs and I
was in a band at the time called
‘Shrug’.
Hi Rachel…
R: Hi Jonny…
Gary was actually four years
younger, so I heard about the band
through my brother.
How’s it going?
R: I’m really good thanks, how are you?
Good thanks!
He thought I looked organized and I could
also drive, which was a bonus to the band.
R: You joined the band later on, how did that
all come together?
R: It’s really sunny here today, so I hope you
I just got a call from Gary saying that he had
27

JULY 2018 JULY | ISSUE 2018 | #69 ISSUE | #69 SNOW PATROL
got a record deal and would I like to join.
R: So that was good leverage? Did it take
much persuasion?
Well, I didn’t have to do an audition or
anything, but I did say I need to think about
it [laughs] so he was like ‘well you’ve got a
week’.
R: Who were your musical influences
growing up?
When you’re in your teens you sort of think
that playing fast solos is a really good thing,
then you realize actually, the songs themselves
are the best bit, so I grew up listening to a lot
of Zeppelin and Rock Bands like that.
R: How did the name Snow Patrol come
about?
We were called ‘Polar Bear’ initially and then
we got a call from someone else who had
the same name, so we had to change it. So a
friend of ours just called us the Snow Patrol,
and for some reason, we don’t know why, so
we just thought why not?
R: It’s obviously worked. I have noticed ‘Polar
Bear’ referenced in a lot of your things,
so for example your album was ‘Songs for
Polar Bears’ and also you have ‘Polar Patrol
Publishing’, so I have come to the conclusion
there is a lot of ‘Polar’ going on?
I know, we have something about the arctic;
maybe we are fascinated by it I don’t know?
R: Its very good synchronicity though, so
from a marketing perspective you’ve
nailed it. So I am getting married in six
weeks…
Congrats…
R: I have heard that you made a very
romantic proposal to your wife? Can you tell
us a bit more?
Yeah, so we were playing near an area where
I grew up in Northern Ireland. During the
gig I thought I would do something kind of
subliminal and I asked my wife to marry me on
the screen, but it was only going to appear for
literally three seconds, so I had to make sure
that my mum was standing there and telling
her to look at the screen at that particular
point. So I had it on my drums and I just put it
on, it managed to work out as she was looking
at the right time…
R: And she said yes?
She did yeah [laughs] and we’ve got a little
boy who is five.
R: Do you have any advice to newly weds? I
mean you’re in the spotlight you must find it
hard sometimes?
I think fame is a weird thing; my wife isn’t too
bothered about what I do. It’s only hard when
I am on tour I suppose? We get a lot of time
together at certain points, you know, I might
be away for a while but then I get two weeks
where I will be home all of the time. So yeah,
I think it is good being away sometimes, as it
makes the heart grow fonder.
R: That’s what they say! So we touched
upon your publishing company earlier, and
you’ve produced hit singles for people like
Ed Sheeran, Birdie, and Robbie Williams, can
you tell us more about that?
So I started this company seven years ago and
we took Ed on support in America and he and
Johnny started writing together, from that, I
gathered songwriters and it was like having
an office job. It was really rewarding and
fascinating to work with writers in that way. I
am not the writer I am just the pusher.
R: Behind every good writer is a good
organizer, so that is a very important job!
That could be my strapline!
R: So Ed used to go to school with some of
my friends and we used to watch him at local
gigs and now we don’t get to see him at all
because he is so famous?
Well we are going to be doing European
Festivals and we’ve got our own tour coming
up. We are also doing Australia, America, South
America, Canada… everywhere!
R: So just a small tour then?
A big, long tour covering two years probably.
R: So one last question,
what is your favourite
Snow Patrol song?
[laughs] yeah I know! That is in Suffolk is it?
We played the first latitude?
R: Yeah I came to see you! We are so close to
Latitude and are huge supporters, but I have
to confess I do come home for a shower each
day…
Oh, well my favourite one is
‘Life on Earth’ which is out
at the moment.
R: What about
previous
albums?
Ohhhh! That’s cheeky!
R: So can you tell us about your new album
‘Wildness’ out now? Is it the same Snow
Patrol we know and love or is it a slightly
different sound?
I think it is? I don’t know. The one thing that’s
always constant is Gary’s voice, although this
time, there are a coupe of songs where he
does sound a bit like Rod Stewart, so he has
changed his vocal up a bit.
‘Fallen Empires’
which is great to
play live, ‘Shut
Your Eyes’.
R: Thank you
so much for
your time today
Jonny.
Best of luck with
the new album.
There are definitely songs on there that
people will be quite shocked by, it’s a different
offering, we definitely haven’t repeated
ourselves.
That was the point, you know? It’s forced us to
come up with a different sound.
R: What are your plans for the rest of the
year?
Thanks Rachel,
you take care.
JONATHAN LAMBERT - BESPOKE JEWELLERS AND GOLDSMITHS
Every iconic piece of fine
jewellery that has ever been
created is very likely to have
started life as a pencil sketch.
A skilful design carefully thought
out by a designer who has
been classically trained in their
art, who knows how a piece of
jewellery should be made so
that it is perfectly balanced,
it’s construction enables it to
be worn with ease and above
all it looks amazing. A piece of
jewellery should not only look
beautiful but also be a joy to
the wearer and an object of
admiration to others.
Whilst this simply sums up
exactly what makes a perfect
piece of jewellery, to find a
professional jewellery designer
in an independent provincial
retail jewellers is a rarity - this is
not the case at Jonathan
Lambert Bespoke Jewellers.
The Lambert family have been
jewellers and goldmiths since
1795 and the current generation
of the family are extremely
proud of this heritage. Yasmin
Lambert, has a first class
honours degree in fine jewellery
from Central St Martins. Before
deciding to settle in Suffolk she
enjoyed a glittering career in
jewellery design, which included
seven years as a designer for
Garrard, the then Crown Jeweller
in
Regent St, London. Yasmin has
designed for royalty and global
celebrities and her jewellery has
graced the pages of magazines
whilst being worn by her many
famous clients. It is rare to find
this level of talent outside of a
top London jewellery store but
the services that can be offered
to clients by Jonathan Lambert
Bespoke Jewellers are quite
Maybe you have inherited a selection
of items that you cherish for the
memories, but only sits in a box or
drawer from one year to the next for
the same reasons? If the answer to
either of these questions is ‘yes’ then
we can create a new piece of jewellery
for you that you can not only enjoy,
but also pass onto to your children
and family for them to enjoy for years
to come. We have worked with many
customers over the years and have
taken the greatest pleasure in bringing
old and pre-loved jewellery back to
life by using the gemstones and metal
to create new pieces. The process
is very simple and our initial design
consultations are free of charge. We
would be delighted to take the time to
discuss the possibilities with you and
to give you outline of the costs before
we take the process to the next stage.
Yasmin is available for design
appointments in our Lavenham or
Sudbury stores.
Do you have a fear of flying?
The sun is shining, well most of the
time... and the summer holidays are just
around the corner. This means most
of us will be looking forward to jetting
off someplace nice, but not if you are
afraid of flying!
There are many reasons why someone develops a
fear of flying, it could be due to a ’bad flight’ you
experienced, like severe turbulence, it can also
be caused by something completely unrelated to
flying, like claustrophobia or a traumatic event in
your life.
If you have a fear of flying, here’s a tip to help
keep you calm:
7/11 Breathing Technique
Breath in through your nose for a count of 7 and
out through your nose for a count of 11, it’s quite a
quick count, roughly 2 counts per second.
The secret to this technique is to make the
outward breath longer than the inwards breath,
by doing so you are stimulating your bodies own
relaxation mechanism.
If you find these counts don’t work for you,
change them to what does e.g slower counts of 3
and 5 maybe.
Many of my clients find this technique very useful,
it’s discreet and can be used anywhere, so if you
find yourself getting anxious leading up to your
flight, or at the airport or during your flight, use
this technique to help calm you down.
This technique also works really well as a
distraction, because if you are counting in your
head, you can’t be worrying at the same time.
Distractions are a great way to keep the anxiety
at bay, so on your flight make sure you have
plenty to do because not all flights come with
entertainment.
If you would like to find out more about how Elizabeth Donegan Cognitive Hypnotherapy
could help you let go of your fear of flying, or would like to have a chat about how I could
help you in another way, contact me for a free telephone consultation.
Benefits
Calms the brain
Energizes the body
Strengthens the arms and legs
Helps relieve the symptoms of menopause
Improves digestion
Relieves headache, insomnia, back pain, and
fatigue
Cautions:
Carpal tunnel syndrome, Diarrhea
Pregnancy: Do not do this pose late-term.
High blood pressure or headache: Support
your head on a bolster or block, ears level
between the arms.
How to try the pose:
1. Come onto the floor on your hands and knees.
Set your knees directly below your hips and your
hands slightly forward of your shoulders. Spread
your palms, index fingers parallel or slightly
turned out, and turn your toes under.
2. Exhale and lift your knees away from the floor.
At first keep the knees slightly bent and the heels
lifted away from the floor. Lengthen your tailbone
away from the back of your pelvis and press it
lightly toward the pubis. Against this resistance,
lift the sitting bones toward the ceiling, and from
your inner ankles draw the inner legs up into the
groins.
3. Then with an exhalation, push your top thighs
back and stretch your heels onto or down toward
the floor. Straighten your knees but be sure not
to lock them. Firm the outer thighs and roll the
upper thighs inward slightly. Narrow the front of
the pelvis.
4. Firm the outer arms and press the bases of
the index fingers actively into the floor. From
these two points lift along your inner arms from
the wrists to the tops of the shoulders. Firm your
shoulder blades against your back, then widen
them and draw them toward the tailbone. Keep
the head between the upper arms; don’t let it
hang.
5. Adho Mukha Svanasana is one of the poses in
the traditional Sun Salutation sequence. It’s also
an excellent yoga asana all on its own. Stay in this
pose anywhere from 1 to 3 minutes. Then bend
your knees to the floor with an exhalation and
rest in Child’s Pose.
Beginner’s Tip:
If you have difficulty releasing and opening your
shoulders in this pose, raise your hands off the
floor on a pair of blocks or the seat of a metal
folding chair.
Follow-up Poses:
Standing poses, Uttanasana, Headstand
THE BIG 5 - BY BEN HUTTON
Now I’m not talking the African big 5 you
may see on safari, I’m talking about the
5 big movements you should be doing in
your training regime.
Regardless of whether you’re aiming to burn fat or
build muscle, the training can be fairly similar, it’s
the diet that needs adjusting and the rep ranges for
some people. These five movements are compound
exercises meaning they engage a range of large
muscle groups, requiring higher amounts of energy
and applying a lot of stimulus to your muscles
allowing you to increase strength.
SQUATS
Predominantly a lower body exercise using your
quads and glutes, but also requiring core strength
throughout the movement.
ROW
A back exercise, predominantly lats (the big ones)
and arms (biceps).
BENCH PRESS/PRESS UPS
A chest exercise also working your triceps and
anterior deltoids (shoulder muscles)
SHOULDER PRESS
Clue is in the name with this one, it works your
shoulders which are built up of many different smaller
muscle groups.
Whether you’re creating a programme or just
‘winging it’, you want to engage the biggest muscles
and more than one at a time to get the most out of
your training. These 5 exercises will hit all the major
muscles and help you on your way!
DEADLIFTS
A posterior chain exercise meaning it focuses on back
muscles and hamstrings, think the muscles on the
back of your body!
BEN HAENOW
Bounce Magazine’s Rachel Ducker speaks to Ben Haenow about his
time in the X Factor, new marriage and album...
Ben Haenow is best known for winning the
eleventh series of the popular TV show the X
Factor.
Rachel Ducker speaks to Ben about the
launch of his new album ‘Alive’ released
independently, his new marriage and life since
the X Factor.
The first taste of being in the media spotlight
is quite daunting going from completely
unknown to suddenly appearing in the
newspapers and stuff overnight. You end up
worrying about what stories might come out,
whether true or not... and how that would
affect you, your family and friends. It’s all
actually quite tough to deal with at first.
R: Hi Ben, how are you today? Thanks very
much for your time!
I’m great thanks. Thank you for having me!
R: We first saw you emerge onto our screens
in 2014’s X Factor - what was this experience
like for you?
It was crazy! Overall an amazing experience
and one that completely
changed my life. The
platform it has given me
and the opportunities
that open up after
doing something like
The X Factor have been
incredible.
R: What was the most
difficult part about being on the show?
Being away from your family and friends is
one of the hardest things for sure, particularly
at times when you’re stressed out or down
and just want some reassurance from people
who you know, and who know you. But also
I’d say being in that ‘bubble’ and almost a bit
cut off from reality, not really knowing what is
going on outside the madness of the show.
R: You’re recently married (as am I, I married
last month) what is it like to be a newlywed?
Congratulations Rachel! Well, cheesy as it
sounds, it honestly was the happiest day of
my life!! I cried like a baby all day (tears of
happiness of course lol)... I married the most
incredible and beautiful woman in a perfect
fairytale wedding in Italy. I’d say getting
married to Jess has been the best
thing I’ve ever done!
R: How has this effected your
career if at all?
I don’t think it’s had any effect
on my career at all really. I’ve
been with Jess for 11 years so it’s
not really a new situation with us
being together and she has always
been so understanding when I’m
away for work and stuff quite a bit. But I’d
say she was definitely an influence with some
of the writing in the new album. In particular,
a track called ‘Rising’ was written about her.
So maybe getting married has helped me
artistically too haha!
R: Does it make a difference having a
45

JULY 2018 JULY | 2018 ISSUE | ISSUE #69 | #69 BEN HAENOW
relationship that is now in the media
spotlight?
I wouldn’t say our relationship has been
particularly high profile at all. It has always
been kept quite private, and we like it that
way. The media’s main focus has always been
about the X Factor experience or focusing on
the music.
R: How do you deal with negativity if you
ever get any?
I just tend to ignore it if I do come across
anything. I’ve been fairly lucky in that respect
as I don’t tend to get much... or maybe I’m just
blind to it all. But I think if you’re talking about
negative comments and stuff on social media,
I really don’t let that kind of thing get to me. I
mean, I understand that maybe not everyone
is going to like the same stuff and that online
it’s very easy for people to have an opinion
or comment on anything and everything be it
good or bad.
R: Who were your musical influences
growing up?
My dad was big into blues and rock music and
my mum used to like lots of soul and motown
stuff so that’s the kind of music I heard
growing up. When I started out singing, it was
always AC/DC and Led Zeppelin covers.. Oasis,
Nirvana, Stevie Wonder, Marvin and that sort
of thing.
R: How would you describe your own sound?
I’d say it’s probably pop-rock but with a bit of
soul influence thrown in.
R: You post a lot of fun covers online, how do
you pick which songs to cover?
“It’s fairly random. Sometimes I just ask people
on Twitter what they would like to hear and
take suggestions, but usually it’s just a songs
that I like or feel like singing.
R: You have a new album out called ‘Alive’
can you tell us more about that?
Well this is my first completely independent
release. And all the songs were written by me
and my brother. I get total creative control
which is exciting. I think the songs on this
album are a little more autobiographical than
they were on the first album but will hopefully
resonate with people. Production-wise, we’ve
gone maybe a little edgier and a bit less
ballad-heavy than the first album too. There’s
a bit more tempo to it all. It’s always a little
scary putting new stuff out and hoping people
can vibe with it, so I’m a little anxious but very
excited.
R: What is your own personal favourite song
from the album?
I think either ‘Getaway’ or ‘Give Me Your Love.’
When we wrote ‘Getaway’, I was really happy
with the lyrics and the overall message/feel of
the song. And ‘Give Me Your Love’ was a bit
more of an experimental one sound and style
wise for me and I was really happy with how
it turned out. It was nice to write something a
bit more upbeat.
R: Any plans for a tour?
Well me and the band came off our third
UK tour only a few months back, so maybe
something towards the end of this year,
but I’ve got some festivals and other
performances all over the place. It’s great to
play the big outdoor venues in the summer
and I’ll be bringing some of the new songs
into the set.
R: Ben thank you so much for your time and
for chatting with us at Bounce Magazine, we
wish you all the best with the new album.
Thank you so much! Speak soon!
The Wines
of India
Vines were growing in India during the 4th Millenia BC,
thought to have been brought in by Persian traders.
classes while the lower castes drank alcoholic
drinks made from wheat and barley etc.
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
They were probably only table or eating grapes
and not for making wine. During the 2nd and
1st Millenia BC it is thought that alcoholic drinks
were in use and that it had become a regular
commodity. Some evidence is available that these
drinks could have been made from rice.
In the 4 th Century BC some writings for the current
Emperor indicated that wine was in evidence
based on the use of grapes.
At the time, wine was favoured by the noble
Under Muslim rule alcohol was prohibited but there
are reports that one ruler was fond of brandy.
Portugese colonists in the 16 th Century brought
their Port style wines to Goa and the production of
these fortified wines spread.
British rule under Queen Victoria, greatly
encouraged winemaking and vine growing,
particularly for British inhabitants. Vineyards were
planted in several regions including Kashmir. In
1883 the Calcutta International Exhibition proved
India could make wine to great acclaim.
At this time however the Phylloxera epidemic
made its way from Europe and devastated the
vineyards. What with religious and public opinion
50

FOOD & DRINK
JULY 2018 JULY | ISSUE 2018 #69 | ISSUE | FOOD #69 & DRINK
reacting against alcohol, it was to become a
prohibited product.
Grapes were thus delegated to table grapes
and raisins. Some areas like Goa did continue to
produce very sweet and high alcohol wines similar
to port.
The Changes..
It was up to the 1980’s, when the attitude to
alcohol changed, that French winemakers
supported and founded the Tonia Group in Goa.
Using classic French grapes such as Cabernet
Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Ugni Blanc,
Chenin Blanc and Pinot Blanc, still and
sparkling wines were produced.
Included in this were Champagne
producers.
India’s growing middle class
only fuelled the growth.
Climate and
Geography...
In such a vast land there are bound
to be some areas that have a suitable
climate for growing good quality grapes for
making quality wine.
In summer during the growing season, India’s
wine regios which fall in the tropical climate
band, are subject to monsoons. To escale the
worst vineyards are planted at higher altitudes, in
slopes and hillsides for protection.
Typically at 660 ft, 2600ft to 3300ft above sea
level. Temperatures can get as high as 45 C and
as low as 8 C so the sites chosen are particularly
important.
Wine Regions...
The more temperate climates range from the
Punjab down the south at Tamil Nadu.
Some of the larger areas are near Mumbai such
as Maharistra.
Other parts of India especially in the east have
high heat and humidity which limits vine growth.
The search for higher altitude sites is even more
important.
Viticulture...
The heat and humidity of the country
requires careful thought as to where
and how vines are planted.
Usually vines are trained on pergola
and trellis styles using bamboo
and/or wire in order to have more
protective canopy off the ground to
avoid fungal disease and heat.
Wide spacing also keeps air circulation which
restricts the build up of moisture which can lead
to mildew. The standard requirement of good
drainage is vital.
Harvesting takes place normally during February
either by hand or machine whichever is possible.
Although there are many good indigenous
varieties of grapes, many imported, mostly
French varieties are grown.
Conclusions...
There is no doubt that there is now another major player in the quality wine league. In
comparison tastings many of india’s wines perform extremely well. Surprise is a common
reaction when people taste these wines for the first time and realise that India is a serious
wine making country.
DINGLE MARSH BARNS
Bounce Magazine were excited to be invited to review
Dingle Marsh barns situated on the Dunwich coast...
Dingle Marsh Barns
provide three selfcatering
holiday
cottages.
“Dunwich is one of my favourite places in the world.
Whether you love to walk on the beach, through forests
or heaths, it has it all. Not to mention all of the history that
surrounds this ancient town!
You will find them located on the
edge of the picturesque village of
Dunwich, surrounded by forest and
heath on one side, and salt marshes
and the sea on the other with the
beach only a five-minute walk away.
Bounce Magazine were delighted
to be invited along to review the
self-catered accommodation for the
weekend. Here’s what we thought...
Believe it or not in the Anglo-Saxon period, Dunwich was the
capital of the Kingdom of the East Angles but the harbour
and most of the town have since disappeared due to coastal
erosion.
At its height it was an international port similar in size to 14th
century London.
Now it is known as the ‘lost town’. If you are keen to find out
more during your stay you can visit the museum in the village
for more information.
We arrived at the barn on a sunny Friday
evening.
The renovated thatched barn has a mix oldfashioned
charm with 21st century convenience
and even its own private car park.
Upon entering we were taken back with the size of
the barn and how well maintained everything was.
There is a large living and dining room great for
entertaining, but the icing on the cake for me, was
the fully equipped kitchen, complete with a range
cooker and glass roof, flooding light into the whole
room.
You can sleep up to eight people in the barn; there
are three bedrooms along with a sofa bed.
On the first night it was just my fiancé Sam,
Archie, and myself so we choose the bedroom
with the en suite of course.
After a wonderful nights sleep in one of the
comfiest beds I think I have ever slept in, the sun
was out again and without hesitation we got up
and headed straight to the beach for a morning
walk.
How often can you do that?
We also walked over the beach cliffs and past the
abbey ruins, it was a beautiful route and one of
many to be hand in the local area.
When we returned we wanted to stay out in the
sun, so we took advantage of the barns large
south facing private courtyard and enjoyed a
coffee whilst topping up our tans.
We also invited my family to join us for the rest of
the weekend.
They arrived at lunchtime, so we decided to head
over to the Dingle Hill Tearooms (also owned by
the Barham family) for a light lunch.
Here you will find fresh sandwiches, quiches,
soups and delicious cakes.
In fact, I have to confess our family are regulars,
so this was premeditated!
There is also a wonderful nursery for plant lovers
and keen gardeners!
With full bellies, we wandered back to the barn
where we relaxed in the sitting room, preparing
for the evening ahead.
My brother Jay is a musician, and on this
particular evening, was performing near by at a
local gig. Just close enough to take a trip out to
watch him for an hour or two, stopping on the
way back for takeaway.
Once back we all sat around the grand dinning
room table, discussing the gig in detail, then
retiring to the sitting room to watch a bit of
Saturday night TV.
In the morning, and although it was rude to not
make use of the beautiful kitchen, we headed
back over to the tearooms for one of their
amazing breakfasts.
From Eggs Benedict to a Full English, the
breakfasts are as good as the lunches and the
staff are very friendly too!
The weekend went so quickly, but we had such
a wonderful time at the barn. I can honestly say I
didn’t want to leave.
It’s the perfect location for those who love to
socialize, entertain and for those who enjoy the
beauty of the countryside.
We are looking forward to returning again for
another special occasion in the near future and
would well recommend a visit!
Piña
Colada
Ready for summer…
How about just a taste of the beachy lifestyle
with a Classic Piña Colada. Fresh
pineapple makes our Piña Colada
extra tropical.
Method
1. Add rum, coconut milk, pineapple
chunks and juice to a blender with ice.
Blend until smooth.
2. Pour into 2 glasses.
Ingredients
• 4 oz. spiced rum
• 4 oz. coconut milk
• 1/3 c. fresh pinapple chunks
• splash pineapple juice
• 1 c. ice
• 2 maraschino cherries
3. Garnish each glass with a pineapple
chunk and a maraschino cherry.
With a twist...
Try replacing your rum with the same
proportion of vodka. It can add a
different taste and vibe to the cocktail,
but it’s just as good as a frozen cocktail.
MODERN
FOOD FUSION...
Nestled next to the Chapelfield Shopping
Centre in Norwich, sits Wagamama, the
Japanese/Asian Fusion noodle chain, offering
a new twist to dining with fresh food in a
friendly, vibrant setting.
The Bounce Magazine team, were invited along
to try out some of the dishes off the popular
summer menu and vegetarian and vegan menu.
Here’s what we thought...
“Like the food, the interior is minimalist, modern
and fresh. Stylish lights hang above the wooden
tables with metal legs, it reflects a Japanese
Feng Shui style of living; giving diners the sense
of eating as a family – everyone sits and eats
together. Soya sauce, chilli oil and dried chilli salt
sit neatly alongside your throwaway table mat
and chopsticks.
One of the great things about Wagamama, apart
from their relaxed seating style, is they like to mix
things up a bit and every so often they add new
dishes.
The current summer menu has dishes ranging
from Japanese to Thai, many of which sounded
very tempting to us, makes for difficult choosing,
so its worth having a sneak peek at the menus
before hand.
JULY 2018 | ISSUE #69
At first, I struggled to decide what to order;
thankfully our waitress helped us to decide
on which starters (sides) would best suit our
tastes and the vegetarian vegan menu was most
impressive with a wide variety of choice with
well-known dishes adapted.
You can have the sides as starters, just like we did,
or you can have all of the food coming at once
with the main dish, which is the traditional way of
eating Asian food. The portions weren’t too big,
serving as finger food before the more filling main
dishes.
In the end, we decided to share a selection, which
included ‘Mixed Mushrooms & Panko Aubergine
Hirata Steamed Buns’ - two small, fluffy Asian
Buns stuffed with Mixed Mushrooms and Panko
Aubergine, served with Japanese Mayonnaise
and Coriander. We also had the ‘bang bang
cauliflower’ which was very morish and the ‘yasai
gyoza’ - five tasty steamed dumplings, filled with
vegetables. served grilled and with a dipping
sauce.
For mains it was ‘vegatsu’ all round - vegan katsu
curry. seitan coated in crispy panko breadcrumbs
covered in an aromatic curry sauce with sticky
white rice and a seasoned side salad.
We all had just enough room for a shot of Sake to
finish off the meal. Hats off to the staff at Norwich
Wagamama, all very friendly, attentive and really
made the meal very special.”
Nothing beats swimming
outdoors so why not visit the
award winning Beccles Lido,
the heated open-air swimming
pool in Beccles.
The Lido is run by volunteers
who have raised hundreds of
thousands of pounds to fund its
transformation - it has a slide,
springboard, giant inflatable
aquarun (daily lunchtime sessions),
outdoor exercise equipment and
a kiddies adventure play area;
and there are lots of grassy areas,
sunloungers, tables and chairs to
relax on as well as an all-weather
eating and spectating area and a
café serving hot and cold snacks,
drinks and ices.
Thanks to generous donations from
the community and major grants
from the town and Wren, the aging
portacabin toilets were replaced
this year.
The toilets aren’t the only
big improvements.
The toddler pools have
been refurbished and have already received the approval
of local mermaid Lauren Louise Rymer.
Louise told us “it’s really hard to find nice pools where
mermaids are welcome and I’m super happy to see the
improvements that Beccles Lido is making”. Lido Director
Shaun Crowley told us “the toddler pool is looking
fantastic now and with Lauren’s help we are launching
our 2018 fundraising campaign – we want to raise another
£100,000 or more to refurbish the main pool in time
for 2019. We know it’s another big ask but we think the
community is up for the challenge!” The Lido needs to
demonstrate to major grant funders that the community
wants the pool to stay open. For more information, to
make a donation or to do a sponsored event, please visit
uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Team/NewLiner or contact
the Lido on 01502 714911.
The Lido also operates Big Dog Ferry, which runs
passenger boat trips between Beccles Lido and Geldeston
Locks Inn. It is a relaxing 3 mile boat journey along the
River Waveney with the opportunity to enjoy the wildlife
en-route. Find out more at www.BigDogFerry.co.uk or
JULY 2018 JULY | 2018 ISSUE | ISSUE #69 | #69 LIFESTYLE
Keeping
THE PEACE
Sibling squabbles, family
disagreements, the silent
treatment- all in a day’s
work, BY RUBY right? REED
Maybe so, but
wouldn’t it be nice
if the much looked
forward to holiday
went without these
hiccups.
You may be thinking that
would be a mini miracle, but
actually thinking positive is
just one of the things that
might actually make it
happen…
Top tips for keeping the peace
coming up:
Catering to everyone...
No, I haven’t hit my head. The trick is not achieving
it all in one sitting.
For example, a family of 4. Each member gets to
choose an activity. Why not allocate a day to a
person?
Same with eating, everyone can pick a restaurantthere
are enough nights in the week!
Considering everyone...
Feelings, feelings. No one likes to have those hurt.
If you know a particular member of the group is not
going to enjoy something very much, don’t ignore
it.
78

JULY 2018 JULY | 2018 ISSUE | ISSUE #69 | #69 LIFESTYLE
Acknowledge it and make
some suggestions as to
how it can be made more
enjoyable for them.
Don’t push them or
blame them for not
liking something, try
to understand them by
putting yourself in their
shoes and seeing from
their point of view.
Let it go...
And bite your tongue. Ok,
maybe someone has had
more than their fair share
of the biscuits, or you’re
right, dad really can’t
read a map. BUT instead
of pointing that out and ruffling the
feathers let’s not.
Invest in more biscuits and offer some
geographical support.
These little things won’t ruin the
holiday- but the argument caused by
over reactions could.
Final thoughts...
So, I hope you ALL have a very happy
holiday, maybe not completely free
of mishaps (after all they do tend to
be the most memorable of situations)
but remember to stop and think of the
above. Relax, be chilled and have fun
JULY 2018 JULY | ISSUE 2018 | #69 ISSUE | #69 HISTORY
Watts Naval School
The Norfolk County School
This was originally the
Norfolk County School,
set up to educate the
needs of the ‘sons of
farmers and artisans’.
Operated by Dr Barnardo’s
until its closed in 1953. It
stood on a wooded hill with
beautiful views across the
Wensum Valley near the
village of North Elmham
surrounded by 60 acres of
land.
The first stone was laid
on Easter Monday 1873 by
Edward Prince of Wales,
with the school opening in
1874. There was a Principal’s
House to the north end
with a laundry at the south
end. There was also an
open-air 70 ft by 30 ft
swimming bath. A chapel,
built of Bath stone, was
erected in 1883 and by 1884
the school gained railway
access through the County
School railway station. As
a result of the depression
in agriculture the school
figures remained small.The
school closed in 1895, and in
1901 its was sold to Edward
Hannay Watts. His eldest son,
Fenwick Shadforth Watts,
had the building renovated
and furnished, at a cost of
several thousand pounds,
before handing it over to
Dr Barnardo’s Homes that
housed up to 300 orphans
and destitute boys under the
charge of Dr T. J. Barnardo. It
was used for the training of
selected Barnardo’s boys for
a life at sea and the school
was opened on 17 April 1906,
by the Earl of Leicester and
was listed as a Secondary
Technical School.
The Captain of the school
was Commander H. C.
Martin and the Rector of
Kettlestone was appointed
as Honorary Chaplain, with
medical care being provided
by Dr Rackham from North
Elmham. At 6.30am, the
boys would attend morning
prayers before having
breakfast at 7.30am. At
9.00am the boys would
go to the central hall and
fall in for inspection by the
Captain, before marching off
for lessons and drill. Dinner
was served at 12.30pm, with
the boys falling in for more
school and drill at 2.00pm.
At 4.00pm they had a halfhour’s
special drill training.
Tea was served at 5.30pm,
with evening prayers and
bed two hours later.
The pulpit was given as
a memorial to B. Watson,
Esq, and two stained glass
windows were added in
memory of Frederick Humby,
an old Watts boy who lost his
life in the Titanic. The school
was closed in 1953, with the
remaining boys transferred
to other Barnardo’s training
ship establishments.
Today the chapel survives
as a private residence, after
some years of being used as
a piggery. Some of the other
school buildings are still in
ruins, although most have
been renovated and restored
to domestic use. The chapel
memorial windows were
removed by Barnardo’s
and in 1978 they were sold
at auction and are now in
private hands in the United
States.
Clean Heels
BY LUCY JONES
Clean Heels prevent
women from sinking into
soft ground when they
walk in heels outdoors,
and protect the heels
themselves from damage
and dirt...
“We’re really
impressed with Ally’s
determination and
how she has kept
her business going
through serious health
problems,” said both
Dragons - Deborah
Meaden and Kelly Hoppen.
SO, WHAT DID I THINK...
They are used also to protect wooden floors
and they also stabilise the balance of the
wearer when walking on uneven surfaces.
You may have seen Clean Heels before when
owner Ally Stevenson secured investment on
the popular TV show ‘Dragons Den’.
With a friends outdoor wedding coming up,
I had that sinking feeling, (literally), that I
may end up being stuck in the grass. Or even
worse, face planting the floor!
So, I thought I would try out a pair of Clean
Heels, heel stoppers.
FOOD & DRINK
JULY 2018 | ISSUE #69
Of course, I picked the pretty ones, (shown
left) - as it was a wedding after all, but you
can get clear ones to fit a range of different
sized heels.
They are so easy to attach to your high heel
shoes, and are simple to slip on and off.
They don’t just stop you sinking, they make
you glide across the grass and help with
balance.
Women need a product like this at least twice
a year, whether it’s to go to a wedding, the
races or out for a day on a boat.
Summer sun SOMETHING’S BEGUN
With summer in full flow here are a few of
my favourite seasonal products..
Chanel’s Les Beiges tinged moisturizer with
an SPF 30 and pa ++ is the perfected base
for summer!
Never before have I found a tinted
moisturizer that I have liked, but Chanel
have pulled out all the stops
out with this one - I am
now converted! With its
lightweight texture it doesn’t
feel like you are wearing
make up it leaves your skin
looking (and feeling) healthy
and glowing.
I love that this does not settle into
any pores or fine lines, it just blends
with the skin giving a luminous veil whilst
at the same time hydrating and protecting
your skin.
What better way to compliment a light no
make up glow, than with Chanel’s new Les
Beiges healthy glow natural eyeshadow
palette in deep. The pigments are so strong
you only need a small amount. Emphasise
your golden glow!
If you love to add a pop of colour, then
head to Dior and try their new diorshow
onstage liner, liquid eyeliners with an easy
to apply felt-tip.
The staying power of these are
like none I’ve seen before and the
colours are shocking!
Finally, the summer must have
for is either Dior or Chanel’s
deodorant, they smell of your
favourite perfume… I always have one
in my handbag!
If you would like to contact me for
booking you can find
Brighten Up Your Big Day...
The summer months are always a firm
favourite with soon-to-be brides and
grooms.
Wedding photos when the sun is shining look
beautiful, the longer evenings and the warmer
weather all help to ensure everyone has an
amazing day.
However, with the warmer weather, more skin
is likely to be on show. Legs, arms and backs
are often a focus for brides and their guests,
and ask any bride what look she would like to
achieve on her big day, the response would
be something like: Flawless,
luminous, smooth and toned
skin… The list goes on and on.
So why not consider a Body
Wrap? They are not always at
the top of the list when it comes
to pre-wedding treatments, but
if you knew what results can be
achieved by having one, they
most certainly would be.
One wrap in particular is the perfect bridal
treatment; and this is the lumafirm® Body Firm
& Glow Body Wrap from Pevonia.
Enriched with 26 ingredients with anti-ageing
extracts; the latest in peptides, and liposomic
technology, this wrap is designed to illuminate
and deeply repair skin for a youthfully radiant
appearance. Ultra-hydrating, this wrap also has
incredible smoothing and de-ageing benefits,
this is down to the array of ingredients being
used on the skin.
Some of the many ingredients worth
highlighting are Sorghum, the power-house
ingredient which remarkably tightens the skin,
improves texture, and reduces wrinkle; while
Diacetyl Boldine is the key to the instantly
luminous complexion achieved while delivering
the immediate brightening effect.
Most of us have heard of Soy Protein, but have
you used it on the skin?
It increases the skin’s elasticity and
firmness while Elastin (Marine), fights
the lack of elasticity. This ensures
skin looks firmer and ultimately
smoother.
Finally, for that defined skin contour
and glow, Kombucha is used. Again,
repairing and increasing skins
elasticity and firmness.
This really is a luxurious wrap and delivers
when needed, especially on one of the most
important days of your life.
If you want every inch of your skin velvety soft,
rejuvenated, firmer and toned, then you need
to experience the visible difference for yourself.
Festival Season is Upon Us!
Festival season is truly upon us, so I wanted to
share with you my festival must haves to keep you
looking and feeling amazing the whole weekend
long!
I’m lost without my skincare collection so I’ve
slimmed down by absolute essentials for your
festival season that you would be able to fit in your
handbag.
Crystal Stick Deodorant!...
Never have to worry about packing a bulky
deodorant again - Crystal sticks come in travel size
so perfect for your handbag.
Just run under water and rub under your arms.
Put simply it’s a block of salt which prevents the
natural skin bacteria from reacting with your sweat
so no unpleasant smells.
What’s even better is it is light and solid so you
don’t have to worry about spillages or carrying
heavy items.
Lip Balm..
I don’t know about you but I feel a little bit naked
without my lippy on, do you?
Make sure you pack a tinted lip balm for when you
rock up at the festival. It will keep
your lips lovely and soft but give
you that touch of colour that really
brings your smile to life and those
selfies too!
I use the FRUU lip balm collection
which is made from repurposed
fruit which would only have gone
to waste in the food manufacturing
HAIR & BEAUTY
JULY 2018 | ISSUE #69
process. It’s a great way to be kind to the environment too.
Mini Wash Bag...
Festivals are a wonderful
carefree
environment to let your
hair down… go on relax
and have some fun.
I never have to worry
about losing any of my
must have items as I
pack them all in my
cute little wash bag -
it sort of doubles up
as a make-up bag too.
I’d never be without it
as I’m a little bit clumsy and prone to losing
things so as long as I know everything is wrapped up in
there I can relax and enjoy the music.
Miniatures!...
It’s all about the miniatures when you’re travelling light.
Only pack what you need, the bare essentials, as you’ll
more than likely be carrying it around with you all weekend.
If you brave the showers (go early, definitely go early!) but
face / body wash and moisturiser are all you really need.
A good face wash to remove those panda eyes and festival
glitter! I love the Urban Veda collection as it’s design based
on the Ayurvedic principles and offers a range for each skin
type. It’s more than likely going to be hot (well we hope) so
keeping your skin moisturised and protected is essential.
may be as the sun can do more damage to
your skin that you realise, even on cloudy
days.
Perfume rollette...
We all like a good perfume and a
little rollette is perfect handbag size
that you can apply day and night.
Choose the right one and they can
give you an uplifting feeling too. I
often choose the Zephorium rollettes
as they are designed to work with the
Chakras.
I feel confident knowing I’m wearing
a beautiful natural scent and the
aromatherapy oils used can give you a
boost of energy too or calm you down
if you struggle with anxiety, especially in
large social situation.
Most of all relax and enjoy the moment,
make amazing memories with your friends
that you’ll cherish forever.
Apply sun cream everyday, even if you’re unsure how hot it
WANT A GREAT
FAKE TAN?
Drinking plenty of water,
applying petroleum jelly and
patting yourself with a towel are
just some of the best hacks for
applying streak-free fake tan.
Other tips are for pro-longing your fake tan once
applied, and include things like adding baby
powder to sweaty areas, opting for showers over
baths and avoiding chlorinated swimming pools.
Check out our top fake tan hacks...
PREP TO AVOID PATCHINESS...
Wax or shave at least 24 hours before tanning, to
give your skins pores a chance to close up. It’s also
important to get your nails and hair done before
you tan, as a pedicure (with soaking and scrubbing)
will leave your feet patchy and hair dye will
strip the tan around your hairline. You should also
exfoliate and moisturise 24 hours before you apply
the false tan, to avoid patchiness around your
knees, elbows and any other places where you
have dry skin.
98

HAIR & BEAUTY
JULY 2018 JULY | ISSUE 2018 #69 | ISSUE | HAIR #69 & BEAUTY
AVOID HAIR REMOVAL CREAMS...
Avoid using hair removal creams when you have
fake tan on, as this will strip the tan from the skin,
which will cause an uneven, patchy mess.
DRINK PLENTY OF WATER...
According to research, it’s important to drink
plenty of water when you are fake tanning, as
the DHA ingredient that’s found in most tans can
dehydrate your skin.
DO YOUR FACE FIRST...
If you’re spot-prone, avoid using the same fake
tanner on your body that you do on your face.
Instead, use one which has hydrating ingredients,
which will stop the tan from clogging your pores.
The tan on your face should also much lighter
than on your body, so avoid putting too much
on. This is because it’ll end up looking too dark
against your skin once you have added colour to
your face with makeup.
AVOID BATHS AND SWIMMING POOLS...
The less time spent in water, the better for your
fake tan. Chlorine is known for stripping off your
false tan, so avoid spending too much time in
swimming pools and Jacuzzis.
REMOVE SPLOTCHY TAN WITH MILK...
If you’re tan has become patchy over time,
remove it by using a homemade mask made from
lemon and milk. Simply add a lemon slice to a
glass of milk and apply to your skin. Leave it on
for 15 mins before rinsing off. This should remove
your streaky tan in no time.
WEAR GLOVES...
When applying fake tan, always make sure you
wear some disposable gloves. This will stop it
from streaking and will avoid those dreaded
orange hands.
APPLY PETROLEUM JELLY...
Many beauticians who do spray tans professionally
rub a thin layer of petroleum jelly to dry
areas on your body before applying fake tan.
This includes places like your elbows, knees and
the back of your heels, and it is done to prevent
darker stains on these areas.
NEVER RUB WITH A TOWEL...
After showering, never rub yourself with your
towel, as this will only strip off your tan. Instead,
pat yourself down with your towel until your skin
dries.
ADD SOME BABY POWDER...
If you’re heading out in the sun whilst wearing
fake tan, always apply some baby powder to
any part of your body that sweats more than the
others. This will stop your fake tan from stripping
in the areas where your body collects the most
moisture.
SUMMER IS PROGRESSING
BY KATE LINES
Kate’s Top Tip : Autumn -flowering
bulbs can be planted now.
This is often one of the hottest
months of the year and a great
time to sit out and enjoy your
garden. Keep plants looking good
by regularly dead-heading, and
you’ll enjoy a longer display of
blooms. Make sure you keep new
plants well watered, using grey
water where possible, and hoe
off weeds, which thrive in the
sunshine.
Planning ahead
Start collecting seed from plants you want to grow
next year, especially annuals such as Calendula,
poppy and love-in-a-mist.
Water your garden thoroughly once or twice a week
rather than little and often - this encourages plants
to put down roots in search of water rather than
coming up to the surface. Remember, though, that
containers and hanging baskets need watering every
day and sometimes even twice a day if it is hot and
windy.
IS YOUR HOME READY
FOR A STAYCATION?...
It seems to have taken an age
to get here, but regardless of
what the weather tells us, it
is always properly Summer
when the schools close for 6
weeks or so.
The initial couple of weeks are great,
aren’t they? If you go out to work, it
all becomes a bit more relaxed of a
morning and if you’re home-based, then
the pressure really is off for the duration.
At least, that’s how it starts. Before
long, the lack of routine is proving as
stressful as term-time, with kids under
your feet or devouring the contents of
the fridge as quickly as it can be filled.
You encourage them to play outside,
We yearn for that lengthy gap in schoolrelated
tedium. Having to be in 3 places
at once, school drop-off and collection
traffic nightmares, after school clubs,
play dates, and a break from those
dress-up like a book days!
but looking at the weather, you’d rather
play Xbox too!
Before long, siblings are fighting, it’s all
a bit fractious and you feel like you can’t
do right for doing wrong!
Ah, summer. How we love you!
As the children grow, the house just
seems smaller doesn’t it? They acquire
‘stuff’ at an alarming rate and there
just isn’t the space to spread out like
there used to be. And having teenagers
skulking in their rooms all day probably
isn’t ideal either!
And the great thing about creating
these flexible spaces, is exactly that.
They can morph into whatever you want
afterwards, from office to gym, to yoga
studio, or all of the above!
At Parker Home, we try to practice
what we preach and have built our own
garden building which we use as an
office and a studio.
If you’re seeking more space, this could
be your ideal option. Get in touch and
we’ll be happy to help you with your
own unique creation.
Wouldn’t it be great to have a selfcontained
space where the children
and their friends could play, or just ‘be’?
Now that holiday clubs and community
events seem to be in decline, it’s often
down to us parents to be entertainersin-chief.
But of course, life must go on,
and in times of the ‘staycation’, it’s as
impractical as it is exhausting.
So, what to do?
The creation of a flexible garden space
could be exactly what you’re looking for!
Or indeed, converting your garage from
glorified junk room to the perfect hangout,
come games room.
In terms of garden buildings or garage
conversions, they really can be a
room for all seasons and perfect for a
children’s holiday entertainment space.
They are ideal as a gaming or activity
room, home cinema or simply additional
space to let your family spread out and
live in harmony!
Debbie Lamond and Steve Parker
are co-owners of Parker Home
and specialise in the renovation of
properties across the region.
A SUFFOLK SPLASH
BY ROSS “ACTION MAN” WISHART
This month will see the arrival of the
UK’s biggest splash park at Alton
Water just outside of Suffolk.
and book as an individual but do not that this
amount of waterborne activity will be very
tiring, you must be a confident swimmer who
can swim at least 50m unaided and have the
ability to pull yourself up out of the water.
It’s 72 massive floating inflatable obstacles
spread over 8000 square metres will include
climbing walls, trampolines, balance bars,
rockers, rollers, blast bags the UK’s biggest
slides and even an extra special corner for
adrenaline junkies (which personally should
be named Action Man corner) it’ll be unlike
anything we have even seen in this region.
Individuals, groups, friends, families are all
welcome.
All bookings are done on-line at www.
aquaparksuffolk.co.uk and are priced at £20
per ticket with which you’ll receive 1 hour in
the park with 10 minutes of this taken up by a
safety briefing.
It is also recommended that you arrive at least
30-45 minutes early so that you can change
into the wet-suit and buoyancy aid, the hire of
these are included in your ticket price.
Children aged 8 – 15 must be accompanied
by an adult anyone 16 and over can attend
DO NOT BE LATE if you miss your safety
briefing you will not be allowed on the park
SPORT
and you won’t get your money back.
You are allowed to wear your own wet-suit if
you have one and the wet-suit is also optional
but it is recommended that you wear at least
a T-shirt and/or rash vest.
Even in the height of summer that water will
not be warm, I would certainly recommend
the wet-suit option.
All in all expect the event to last around 2 –
2.5 hours.
Action Man Top Tip: complete the required
disclaimer on-line, if you fail to do so you
will be charged a £5 administration fee for
completing it at reception.
Obviously you’ll want to bring all the
essentials: a towel and a change of clothes,
picnics are welcome on site as a spectators
(which is free) but parking charges do apply.
But what if it is raining? You’ll get wet! And if
you’re in the park and not already wet then
you are doing it wrong!
The park will only close for extreme weather
conditions.
Aqua Park Suffolk is open 7 days a week
from Saturday July 7th to Sunday September
9th it will be busy so book early to avoid
disappointment.
Action Man says: You’re sure to
have a lark at Suffolk’s Aqua Park!
ENTERTAINMENT
JULY 2018 | ISSUE JULY #69 2018 | ISSUE MUSIC #69 & ENTERTAINMENT
THEATRE
ROYAL
July at Theatre Royal features the last
two shows of the spring lineup, before
it’ll be time for us to start preparations
for our next in-house production,
Goodnight Mister Tom, which kicks off
our brand new autumn season.
Suffolk Young People’s Theatre return following the
resounding success of Made in Dagenham with their fully
staged version of the hit West End and Broadway smash
hit, Footloose: The Musical. Based on the 1984 film of
the same name and including some of the biggest hits
of the day, Footloose: The Musical
comes bursting to life with music,
romance and dance.
Delivered by the most talented
young performers Suffolk has
to offer and accompanied by a
professional band, this powerful
rock musical is the best kind of
blast from the past (Wed 25 – Sat
28).
The Classic Thriller Theatre Company present their
production of The Case of the Frightened Lady, a
thrilling murder mystery from “the king of the detective
thriller” Edgar Wallace. When Inspector Tanner is called
in to investigate a ruthless murder at Mark’s Priory, the
grand ancestral home of the Lebanon family, he quickly
discovers that nothing is quite as it seems.
As Tanner moves closer to the heart of the mystery he
uncovers a shocking and closely guarded secret. The
all-star cast includes Oliver Phelps, Deborah Grant, Gray
O’Brien, Denis Lill, Philip Lowrie, April Pearson, Glenn
Carter and Ben Nealon (Mon 30 Jul – Sat 4 Aug).
The end of July marks the start of the new term for
participants in Theatre Royal’s Summer School, which
follows the success of 2017’s Our Day Out: The Musical
with a professional production of Michelle Magorian’s
Goodnight Mister Tom.
The Second World War has just broken out and the life
of Tom Oakley (Roy Hudd), an old man in the country, is
about to change for the better. Having lived alone for 40
years he reluctantly takes under his wing ten-year-old
William, an evacuee from London. As William
begins to soften Tom’s seemingly hardened
exterior, an unspoken and unbreakable bond
is formed (Fri 24 Aug – Sat 8 Sep).
There are more great shows coming up in the
autumn season too, plenty of drama including
Shakespeare’s Henry V; Sherlock Holmes -
The Sign of Four and My Mother Said I Never
Should. We have comedy with Dylan Moran,
Dr Phil Hammond and Steve Parrish plus
tributes to classics with The Goon Show and
Dad’s Army - Radio Hour. Musical treats from Carmen –
The Gypsy and Reverie plus a ballet version of Beauty &
the Beast; family fun with Stick Man and Tabby McTat as
well as other great shows like Vamos Theatre’s full-mask
production Finding Joy and surreal comedy magic show
Minor Miracles.
And of course closing the season is the annual family
pantomime, filled with our traditional blend of magic, fun
and laughter, this year it is Sleeping Beauty. Browse the
full autumn season at theatreroyal.org/upcoming and
REBECCA WALLER
MUSIC
Rebecca Waller is always passionate about
music.
As one of four sisters, all violinists from
Oulton Broad, Lowestoft, she started
playing two months before her 9th
Archie’s
Adventures
CREATE A DOG FRIENDLY GARDEN...
Gardens can contain hazards – some
plants are potentially toxic to little
doggies like me and there are other
dangers too, from harmful chemicals
to sharp objects... [growl]
There are lots of things you can do to ensure
you live in harmony with your four-legged friend,
including planting non-toxic plants, creating
dedicated dog areas and keeping the garden
secure. Here are a few of my tips...
AVOID TOXIC PLANTS...
Many garden plants are potentially toxic to
dogs. They include chrysanthemum, aconite,
buttercup, daffodil, daphne, delphinium,
foxglove, hydrangea, oak, tomato, wisteria and
yew. If you notice any worrying symptoms
and think your dog may have ingested
part of a plant, take your pet to
the vet.
KEEP DOGS AWAY FROM SLUGS AND SNAILS...
Keep an eye on your dog and make sure that it
doesn’t eat slugs or snails. Avoid using nonorganic
slug pellets, as these are toxic to all
wildlife. Lungworm can be contracted by eating
infected slugs, snails or frogs. Signs include
difficulty breathing, coughing, lethargy and
bleeding for longer than normal.
AVOID CHEMICALS...
Avoid using chemicals such as non-organic slug
pellets, which could be harmful if your dog eats a
slug or snail. Discover how to deal with slugs and
snails organically. And do not add additives to
water features or ponds, as dogs will be tempted
to drink from them.
Follow me on Insta @official_archies_
adventures. You can also keep up to date with
my antics on Twitter @bouncearchie.
PLANT DOG-FRIENDLY PLANTS...
You can still have a beautiful garden if you have
a dog – many plants pose no threat to dogs.
They include snapdragons, Michaelmas daisies,
camellias, honeysuckle, lavender, rose, sunflowers,
elaeagnus, centaurea (cornflower), impatiens and
calendula.
