THE BIG 5 - BY BEN HUTTON
Now I’m not talking the African big 5 you
may see on safari, I’m talking about the
5 big movements you should be doing in
your training regime.
Regardless of whether you’re aiming to burn fat or
build muscle, the training can be fairly similar, it’s
the diet that needs adjusting and the rep ranges for
some people. These five movements are compound
exercises meaning they engage a range of large
muscle groups, requiring higher amounts of energy
and applying a lot of stimulus to your muscles
allowing you to increase strength.
SQUATS
Predominantly a lower body exercise using your
quads and glutes, but also requiring core strength
throughout the movement.
ROW
A back exercise, predominantly lats (the big ones)
and arms (biceps).
BENCH PRESS/PRESS UPS
A chest exercise also working your triceps and
anterior deltoids (shoulder muscles)
SHOULDER PRESS
Clue is in the name with this one, it works your
shoulders which are built up of many different smaller
muscle groups.
Whether you’re creating a programme or just
‘winging it’, you want to engage the biggest muscles
and more than one at a time to get the most out of
your training. These 5 exercises will hit all the major
muscles and help you on your way!
DEADLIFTS
A posterior chain exercise meaning it focuses on back
muscles and hamstrings, think the muscles on the
back of your body!
