THEATRE
ROYAL
July at Theatre Royal features the last
two shows of the spring lineup, before
it’ll be time for us to start preparations
for our next in-house production,
Goodnight Mister Tom, which kicks off
our brand new autumn season.
Suffolk Young People’s Theatre return following the
resounding success of Made in Dagenham with their fully
staged version of the hit West End and Broadway smash
hit, Footloose: The Musical. Based on the 1984 film of
the same name and including some of the biggest hits
of the day, Footloose: The Musical
comes bursting to life with music,
romance and dance.
Delivered by the most talented
young performers Suffolk has
to offer and accompanied by a
professional band, this powerful
rock musical is the best kind of
blast from the past (Wed 25 – Sat
28).
The Classic Thriller Theatre Company present their
production of The Case of the Frightened Lady, a
thrilling murder mystery from “the king of the detective
thriller” Edgar Wallace. When Inspector Tanner is called
in to investigate a ruthless murder at Mark’s Priory, the
grand ancestral home of the Lebanon family, he quickly
discovers that nothing is quite as it seems.
As Tanner moves closer to the heart of the mystery he
uncovers a shocking and closely guarded secret. The
all-star cast includes Oliver Phelps, Deborah Grant, Gray
O’Brien, Denis Lill, Philip Lowrie, April Pearson, Glenn
Carter and Ben Nealon (Mon 30 Jul – Sat 4 Aug).
The end of July marks the start of the new term for
participants in Theatre Royal’s Summer School, which
follows the success of 2017’s Our Day Out: The Musical
with a professional production of Michelle Magorian’s
Goodnight Mister Tom.
The Second World War has just broken out and the life
of Tom Oakley (Roy Hudd), an old man in the country, is
about to change for the better. Having lived alone for 40
years he reluctantly takes under his wing ten-year-old
William, an evacuee from London. As William
begins to soften Tom’s seemingly hardened
exterior, an unspoken and unbreakable bond
is formed (Fri 24 Aug – Sat 8 Sep).
There are more great shows coming up in the
autumn season too, plenty of drama including
Shakespeare’s Henry V; Sherlock Holmes -
The Sign of Four and My Mother Said I Never
Should. We have comedy with Dylan Moran,
Dr Phil Hammond and Steve Parrish plus
tributes to classics with The Goon Show and
Dad’s Army - Radio Hour. Musical treats from Carmen –
The Gypsy and Reverie plus a ballet version of Beauty &
the Beast; family fun with Stick Man and Tabby McTat as
well as other great shows like Vamos Theatre’s full-mask
production Finding Joy and surreal comedy magic show
Minor Miracles.
And of course closing the season is the annual family
pantomime, filled with our traditional blend of magic, fun
and laughter, this year it is Sleeping Beauty. Browse the
