On a visit to Broomhill to visit her<br />
cousin, June and husband Lindsay<br />
from Barrhead noticed a lovely wee<br />
kitchen shop on Crow Road. Their dated<br />
kitchen – with feature collapsing ceiling –<br />
spurred the couple on to talk to owner, Greg.<br />
‘We immediately felt Greg had the skills and<br />
experience to manage the complexity of the<br />
project but also shared our love of the quirky<br />
charm of our old kitchen, originally a scullery,’<br />
says June. ‘Our anxieties had led us to delay<br />
renovation far too long: the lathe and plaster<br />
ceiling was sagging and crumbling in places,<br />
we also needed new wiring, windows and<br />
one wall internally insulated before the fit out<br />
could even begin.<br />
‘A major worry now we are retired was our<br />
tight budget, as until the work began we<br />
couldn’t be sure how much the essential<br />
repairs would actually cost. Greg’s detailed<br />
estimates and readiness to adjust the<br />
finishing details helped us move confidently<br />
from one stage to the next. Greg’s<br />
background in cabinet making was a key<br />
attraction as we knew he would bring both<br />
creativity and precision to the final design.<br />
‘Within our small space we gained modern<br />
functionality yet retained a traditional feel,<br />
and the customising used every millimetre<br />
effectively. The wooden shelves and top<br />
drawers bring warmth and link to the original<br />
doors, the waste and recycling is hidden, the<br />
deep drawers are a delight and we love the<br />
housing for the fridge freezer!<br />
‘Since the kitchen was completed we have<br />
really enjoyed preparing meals together. We<br />
each have a workspace due to the re-sited<br />
fridge, cooker and microwave and the bigger,<br />
more balanced worktop areas. We have also<br />
re-discovered the pleasure of eating there<br />
with the garden views around us.’<br />
