20 The Advertizer Image: ‘Escher’s Blue Mating’ - Jim Black, PCPC - Henderson Trophy, 2nd place Bridge of Weir Horticultural Society Paul Matthews entertained fellow members with a presentation on Alpines. He focused on the Grenoble area of the French Alps with its stunning scenery and range of Alpine plants. The upper slopes may look barren but every level of shale, scree or tufa is home to a wide variety of plants provided with nutrients and water which suit different plants. Sometimes fl owers growing in the higher levels appear lower down and in the “wrong areas” but on examination they are growing on rocks which were brought down by avalanches long ago. Delicate orchids thrive in these conditions. There are 470 species of European orchid versus our 74 varieties. Many of these plants are familiar to us and grow here too but we should remember that our wet, temperate climate is too damp and balmy for many to thrive successfully! For those nurturing Alpines, a compost low in nitrogen and with good drainage and grit will encourage growth. Ideally, equal parts of leaf mould and grit will give the best results. For enthusiasts with no head for vertiginous heights or cable cars swinging over valleys, Paul recommends a trip to Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Gardens where there is an excellent Alpine House. Therein visitors will find a wide range of rare Alpines, so tempting to collectors that measures are now in place to prevent “fi nger blight”!! This was our last meeting of the current year and ended with the usual Q&A session, raffle, teas and a chat. Members can look forward to two summer outings: a visit to a private garden in the village and an outing to Parklea Gardens. Then it’s fingers crossed for good gardening weather, colourful borders and healthy vegetable patches - and a selection to exhibit at the Flower Show on 25th August. Good gardening everyone! Photographic Honours for Paisley Photographer Three photographers from Paisley gained distinctions from the Federation Internationale De L’art Photographique. FIAP is a worldwide organisation responsible for the promotion of photographic art in all its aspects and through all kinds of photographic events. Allan Donaldson, Iain McFadyen from Paisley Photographic Society and Norma McDowall from Paisley Colour Photographic Society gained their awards by entering FIAP patronised international photographic competitions and meeting the standards set out for each level of award . Allan’s award of A(artist)FIAP is the first level on the scale of awards. This was done by gaining a minimum of 40 acceptances in 15 international competitions in 8 different countries. Iain and Norma’s awards of E(Excellence)FIAP/Bronze is the third level and requires a minimum of 200 acceptances in 5 different countries and additionally winning 4 medals or honourable mentions in 4 different countries. Allan and Iain were presented with their certificates by Clive Turner, also a member of Paisley Photographic Society, who is the FIAP Liaison Officer for Scotland. Paisley Photographic Society is the oldest club in Scotland dating back to 1857. For the past 5 years the club has met at Coats Memorial Baptist Church but due to the unavailability of this venue the club is moving to a new home. From Friday 7th September meetings will be held in the Methodist Central Hall 2 Gauze Street Paisley where they will continue to provide all the services previously on offer. The fantastic animal life is also in full swing right now. Avian parents are busy raising their young and we have chicks and ducklings aplenty all over the reserve. We also have tadpoles and newts transforming into their adult form in our ponds and butterfl ies and damselfl ies fl uttering and gliding around in the summer air. To make the most of all this visible wildlife we have our Open Day for Nature & entry to the reserve will even be FREE! With so much diverse wildlife we are bringing in experts from many different fields. They will be available on the day to show you and tell you all about what we find. In June we have the longest day of the year. It is called the summer solstice. The name solstice comes from the Latin word Solstitium, where the sol = “sun” and the stitium = “stand”. So roughly translates when the sun stands still because of how long the day is. On June 21 the sun will rise at 4:26am on that morning and will not set again until 22:02pm! Why not make the most of this longest day of the year and come and join us for our summer solstice walk Thursday 21 June which sets off at 7pm. Our friendly staff have all the best knowledge about the reserve and its wildlife. They will lead you on the walk, where you will experience the wonderful nature of the reserve, as well as making the most of the long summer night. Summer Solstice Walk: Lochwinnoch Nature Reserve, Thursday 21 June, 7pm – 9pm - Surround yourself with the sights, sounds and smells of the summer.
