Cllr Natalie Don
April saw the fi rst of Renfrewshire Council’s Big Spring Clean
Weekends and it was a huge success. 31 litter picks took place
across Renfrewshire over the course of one weekend, with over
500 bags of rubbish collected. Bishopton Community Council
organised litter picks across the whole weekend and I was
happy to attend these. It felt really great getting involved and
seeing the huge effort across all areas. During the weekend
we saw all aspects of the community taking part - children,
volunteers, groups, businesses, council workers and elected members were all
working together to tidy up their local areas. I am so thankful for the enthusiasm
that so many local volunteers have shown to the campaign. I am really looking
forward to seeing the progress made throughout 2018, as well as the benefi ts of
the council's increased investment into 'Team Up to Clean Up' taking effect.
I recently met with Susan Bell, Head teacher of Bridge of Weir Primary to discuss
the congestion outside the primary school and surrounding areas, at peak
times. This comes after a series of complaints to myself, regarding speeding,
obstruction, and dangerous driving during the pick up/drop off times. Although
there is no quick fi x, there are measures which could be put in place which may
help to ease the situation. In other areas in Renfrewshire, schools have asked
parents to adhere to a voluntary one-way system at peak times, and this effort,
coupled with support from the police and wardens, has been a very successful
approach. Over the coming months, I intend to discuss this, and other potential
options further with the staff, parent teacher association and local residents, to
ensure that a solution is found that works for everyone. If you are affected by this
- you may be a local resident or a parent who’s children attend the school- I would
love to hear from you should you have any comments in relation to this.
This month I also had the pleasure of visiting the Good Shepherd Centre in
Bishopton, which is a secure unit for vulnerable young people. It was great to see
some of the projects that the young people are working on, such as gardening
and arts and crafts. I also got to meet some of the teachers, including David
Nicol. David is the Royal Horticultural Society’s School Gardening Champion of
the Year, and I heard about his work with the young people, helping them to
achieve a number of awards and increase their knowledge of the environment
and the different plants and produce they can grow. It was also really fantastic
to see the passion and commitment, by all the staff to improve the lives of these
young people.
Finally, the capital roads resurfacing programme is live and can be viewed online
at www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/roads2018-19. I know many of the roads which have
been raised with me are on the list for resurfacing, so I believe this is welcome
news. I understand many people will worry if their road has not made the list, so
I would like to emphasise that this is just the resurfacing list – repairs will still be
made to other sections of road where required.
Bishopton Community
Centre - Public Access
Defibrillator
Bishopton Community Centre Association have recently
purchased a defi brillator with the assistance of St John
Scotland for use by the whole community.
St John Scotland is a Scottish charity dedicated to saving and enhancing
life. It has been running a project to give community groups, companies and
organisations the opportunity to part-fund a public access defi brillator with a
heated outdoor box. The project aims to ensure that defi brillators are provided
at the most suitable locations, based on advice from the Scottish Ambulance
Service who hold a database of all public access defi brillators across the country,
for coverage in as many areas of Scotland as possible.
Located on the outside front wall of Bishopton Community Centre, next to the
small door, facing towards Greenock Road, the defi brillator is voice activated so
no training is required on its use. It has also been registered with the Scottish
Ambulance service so if anyone in the local area phones for an ambulance on
999 they can be directed to it.
Although there will be other defi brillators in Bishopton, such as at the Health
Centre, this is the fi rst one in the area that can be accessed by the public 24/7.
Volunteers from St John Scotland will be available for CPR training at the drop
in session to be held in Bishopton Community Centre from 10am – 12noon on
Saturday 9th June. It’s open to the whole community and is free. The Community
Centre Association plan to have tea and coffee available to encourage people to
come along and be trained!
Freeland Messy Cafe Litter
Picking Scavenger Hunt
Saturday 23rd June
We had a great time at the 1st Freeland Messy Cafe on 21st
April, welcoming about 50 people and lots of new faces.
Our next event will be on Saturday 23rd June from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.
We are arranging a litter picking scavenger hunt around the village in teams.
Absolutely anyone is welcome as long as all children have a responsible adult in
charge of them. There will be a prize for the winning team.
Refreshments and home baking will be available at the hall throughout for
everyone returning from the hunt and for anyone who would just like a cup of tea
and cake. We have a baby corner too.
We will aim to gather at 2.30pm and start the hunt by 2.45pm but anyone arriving
later can still turn up and collect the relevant sheet and equipment.
Hopefully this should be a lot of fun and we hope to welcome you all then.
