Business as a
The Sewell brothers of Conway find
success is a family affair. Derrick
Sewell, Torre Sewell, and Ashley
Sewell co-own Sewell Construction,
Inc., which specializes in commercial
and residential contracting.
Derrick is married to Angela and
has two children, Daren Sewell and
Chavon Fortson, and a stepson, Chris
Warren. Ashley is married to Sherry,
and they have two children, Courtney
6 faulkner lifestyle | june/july 2O18

and Ethan Sewell, and a stepson, Miles
Allen. Torre raised his nephew, Jeffrey
Wilson. The Sewells are Conway
natives and are graduates of Conway
High School.
Sewell Construction, Inc. was founded
by their father, Jasper “Jack” Sewell, in
1978. “The original name was Jasper
Sewell Construction. However, when
we took over the business in 2000,
we shortened the name to Sewell
Construction.” The business is located
at the aptly named number one Sewell
Lane in Conway.
Jack started the business with only
two employees. “Our mother, Joyce,
handled all the bookkeeping and secretarial
work. When he began, people
he knew would give him concrete
jobs in and around the Conway area.
Eventually, he built his reputation
and contractors began contacting him
to complete concrete projects such
as sidewalks, curbs, and gutters. His
business then expanded to the greater
Little Rock area,” shares Torre.
Once the boys were old enough, Derrick,
Torre, and Ashley attended work
regularly with their father. As teens,
the boys’ summers were spent pouring
concrete and learning the value of hard
work. According to Torre, one of Jack’s
mottos was, “If hard work were to
kill a man, I’d have been dead a long
time ago.” Jack retired in 2000, and his
sons took over the family construction
business.
“Our company name was already
established. The hard work we put in
with our dad all of those years carried
over into today,” says Torre. Sewell
Construction, Inc. remains a family
“
Even though we are brothers,
we are the closest friends. We will
always find a way to make it work.
”
—Torre Sewell
Brothers Torre, Derrick and Ashley Sewell (left to right) carry on the legacy of the
family construction business that their father, Jasper Sewell (below left) started
Sewell Construction 40 years ago.
owned small business. “We take pride
in doing quality work and being there
to make sure things are done right.”
While the majority of the company’s
jobs are commercial, the brothers also
delve into residential work with the
assistance of their long-tenured employees.
“We have two employees who
have been with the company for over
25 years: Sam Credit and Charles Credit
Jr.,” says Torre. In addition, most of their
projects are based in Central Arkansas.
Some recent, completed projects
include Mills High School in Little Rock,
the Conway Expo and Event Center,
a sidewalk project at the University of
Central Arkansas, and Murphy Arts
District in El Dorado, Arkansas.
On working together, Torre says, “Of
course we have disagreements, but they
don’t last very long. We have a body
analogy. Derrick is the head; he is the
business-minded one and is the more
serious one of us three. Torre is the heart
of the company, always the peacemaker
and encourager. Ashley is the muscle
and the entertainer, always ready to
make us laugh. Even though we are
brothers, we are the closest friends. We
will always find a way to make it work.”
As for the future of the business, Sewell
Construction, Inc. plans to continue
offering excellent, reliable service and
is available for all of your construction
needs. Adds Torre, “Jasper Sewell
passed away in 2012, but his legacy
is still going strong. And our mother,
Joyce, still gets up before dawn to
make coffee and see us off to work.”
Growing up in and around the water is the
main inspiration behind Dee Ann Huffman’s
desire to create a pool paradise of
her dreams right in her own backyard.
Dee Ann and her husband of 20 years, Ben Huffman,
have always dreamed of giving their family
the dream pool and backyard that they individually
dreamt about as children. The Huffmans,
who live at Centennial Valley in Conway, have
two daughters — Olivia, 17, and Emily, 11.
“Growing up I spent a lot of time as a child
and teen enjoying the water. The majority of
my favorite memories would be spending time
with my family and friends on the lake,” says
Dee Ann. “Being very family oriented, I always
strived to share these types of memories with my
own family by taking trips and going on vacations.
Ben and I have taken the girls on many
adventures, such as floating the Buffalo, going
to the lake, and taking our traditional family
vacation to Orange Beach each year. Taking my
girls on these trips allowed me to share my love
for nature with the ones I love.”
faulknerlifestyle.com 11

With a family “dream pool” and backyard paradise right in
their back yard, the Huffmans can enjoy the perks of the
lake and nature without having to leave their home. “The
vision I wanted to achieve creating our paradise at home was
to construct a place where family and friends could come
together in a cheerful yet relaxing atmosphere. We decided
that incorporating the beauty of natural Arkansas formed stone
and symbolic features – such as rose bushes and bird feeders
– would be the best way to embody family faith and things
meaningful to our home,” she said.
“The natural Arkansas formed stone and the rock laid flower
beds have brought a more natural feel into our backyard, creating
an escape from the reality of busy city life. I’d like to give
a special thanks to Reed’s Landscaping and Jerrell’s Pools for
helping create our dream pool and backyard, and integrating
contemporary designs with an at-home feel.”
Childhood memories inspired at least a couple of highlights
seen in the backyard paradise. “As a child I can vividly remember
the sweet smell of the red roses at my grandmother’s
house. I wanted to bring the memory of visiting my grandmother’s
house by dispersing red rose bushes in the flower
beds,” Dee Ann said. “I was once told that the sighting of a red
cardinal meant that the spirit of a loved one was around. After
the loss of my father in 2016, I was graced with the presence
of a red cardinal in my backyard and knew this was a sign that
to Live!
my father was still watching over our family. I decided to set
bird feeders in my backyard in hopes that the cardinal would
return and establish its place in our forever home.”
Dee Ann said she and Ben wanted to make their place of
“fellowship and happiness, also a place of peace and prayer.”
Being active members of Central Baptist Church in Conway,
the Huffmans have looked beyond the appearance and
intricate details of the “dream pool” design and focused on
something more spiritually grounded.
“We have raised our family and built our home on what we
feel is the strongest foundation; a foundation of love and faith.
We decided to incorporate our family’s faith into our place
of gathering. Ben and I decided to make the main focal point
of our backyard our fireplace. Although we enjoy spending
family time roasting marshmallows and making s’mores over
the fireplace during the cold seasons, our favorite part of the
fireplace is the cross hanging above,” Dee Ann said.
“Being a church-based family and active member of our
community, the cross is set to remind us of our true meaning.
Every morning before work, I step outside to take in nature
and all of its beauty and to enjoy the peace and quiet of the
Business is Booming
BY JENNIFER STANLEY
PHOTOS BY BRANDY STRAIN-DAYER
Keller and Christi Johnson of
Conway stay more than busy
between family and running
multiple businesses. Their companies
include Keller Johnson Construction,
Inc., Safely Tucked Away Mini Storage,
and CAMS Containers and Mobile
Storage, as well as various commercial
and residential properties.
The Johnsons, both Conway natives,
have three children: Kristen, Kerrick, and
Kinleigh Johnson. They also have three
grandchildren including Jaxson, Gavin,
and McKenzie. Kristen is the mother of
all three grandchildren.
Keller is an active member of the
community, serving on the board of
the Faulkner County Homebuilders
Association. He earned the Builder of the
Year distinction for 2017. Likewise, in
her limited spare time, Christi chairs the
fundraising committee of the American
Cancer Society for Faulkner County.
“I have been part of this committee for
six years and have been the fundraising
committee chair for five.”
Keller Johnson Construction, Inc.
specializes in both commercial and
residential building and was founded in
2003. Current projects include Princeton
Village, which is a subdivision developed
and built by the company. “We are
currently working on various new construction
and remodeling jobs for several
clients. We just finished the remodel for
Jim’s Razorback Pizza, which is located
on Hogan Lane in Cassidy Plaza,” shares
Christi. Past jobs include commercial
airport hangars, commercial warehouses,
condominium complex renovations, and
other restaurant additions and remodels.
16 faulkner lifestyle | june/july 2O18

They are also an authorized Ideal Steel,
Inc. dealer.
The Johnsons added to their offerings
by purchasing Safely Tucked Away in
2005. The storage units are conveniently
located on South Harkrider in Conway.
They have over 500 onsite storage units,
as well as 75 mobile storage units and
offer several rental term options based
on the customer’s needs.
In addition to Safely Tucked Away, the
latest addition to their rental portfolio is
the addition of CAMS Containers and
Mobile Storage. This business is managed
by their son, Kerrick. He also oversees the
commercial and residential maintenance
aspects of the Johnson portfolio. “We
are extremely excited about having him
work with us daily and look forward to
him being a part of growing the business
further,” say Keller and Christi.
CAMS Containers and Mobile storage
was an instant success for the Johnsons.
“The business took off right away and
hasn’t slowed down since,” says Keller.
The storage containers are offered as
an alternate solution for clients’ unique
storage needs. “We can deliver containers
on the customer’s request at their
scheduled time. The containers can be
left on site, or we can also pick them up
once they are loaded and store them at
our secure location. Once the customer
is ready for the container to be delivered
back for unloading, we bring it back.
This is especially useful for businesses
such as construction companies. We are
able to deliver the containers from job to
job for onsite equipment storage.” Rental
terms vary based on client needs. The
Johnsons plan to add additional storage
units over the next year.
Though working alongside a partner can
present challenges for some, Keller and
Christi make it work by playing to their
individual strengths. “Like anyone, working
together can be a challenge sometimes
because it’s hard to ‘turn it off’ so to
speak. When we are off work we find
ourselves talking about specific projects
or the business in general .We do make a
great team. Where Keller is out in the field
the majority of the time overseeing current
construction jobs and shows the rental
property, I oversee the office, including
employees, leases when needed, and the
accounting side of our operations.”
Of their future plans, Christi says, “We
are always looking for ways to grow
our businesses. We truly enjoy what we
do and love looking for the next step or
working on the next project.”
Australia: The
Land Down Under
“
Travel is fatal to
prejudice, bigotry, and
narrow mindedness.
”
—Mark Twain
BY MARY ETTA QUALLS
SUBMITTED PHOTOS
Hello again. This month we’re going
to explore the rugged and indescribably
beautiful Australia. There
is only one problem with Australia that
I can think of, and that is it’s a 17 hour
flight from Arkansas. It’s a very special
place, and although I’ve been there for
work and pleasure, I have never been to
the Sydney Opera House, or climbed the
Sydney Harbor Bridge.
First let’s clear the air about a few
things. Australians DO NOT DRINK
FOSTER’S Beer, they send it to the
U.S. for us to drink. Australians rarely
go by their given names, most often
by a nickname. For instance, my friend
Karen Woodcock is called KAZ. All
Australians I’ve met over the years are a
fun loving adventurous group.
We will begin our adventure in Sydney. I
was there shortly after a cyclone, so lots
of wind and rain. But this didn’t prevent
me from spending a lot of time at Darling
Harbor enjoying the many wonderful
places to eat right on the water. Shopping
in Sydney was also a treat, I’ve shared a
pic of their mall, which was a renovated
18 faulkner lifestyle | june/july 2O18

Kangaroos everywhere on the golf course — plenty of water, grass and shade.
train station. When I arrived in Sydney
it was pouring rain, so I asked my driver
to stop at a McDonald’s one block from
the hotel — it ended up being a $40
cab fare to go a block for a $5 burger.
As my husband Bret always says, twice
the money and half the clothes. This is
especially true for Australia.
Let’s continue our adventure by going a
bit north to Brisbane. Much like Sydney,
it’s a harbor city, with lots of shopping
and dining opportunities within walking
distance. Our favorite place to stay in
Brisbane is The Treasury Hotel — Australia’s
old Government Treasury was
renovated and turned into a hotel/casino.
Imagine Little Rock’s Capitol Hotel only
about four times larger, with a casino.
Definitely plan to go back to Brisbane and
stay at this hotel again.
As we continue our journey north toward
the tropical areas Australia is famous for,
we find ourselves in Cairns, pronounced
“Cans”. This is where most of the trips to
the Great Barrier Reef begin. We stayed
in an historic hotel, the Pullman Reef and
Casino. Two bucket list items were to see
a kangaroo in the wild, and to pet a koala.
To find the koala, we took an early morning
train ride up into the mountains above
Cairns to Kuranda. The Kuranda Scenic
Railway was constructed in 1882-1891.
The railway was part of the route where
injured service men were evacuated from
New Guinea and other Pacific Islands
during WWII. It passes through the
rainforest, waterfalls, and Barron Gorge.
The views of the Great Barrier Reef on the
trip up the mountain were breathtaking.
At the Kuranda Koala Gardens we saw
beautiful birds, butterflies, kangaroos,
wallabies and koalas. The trip down the
mountain was via sky rail which gave us a
birdseye view of the rainforest.
While eating breakfast in the hotel the
next morning, we were told there were
Koalas in the rooftop zoo in our hotel. Oh
well, the trip to Kuranda was an adventure
we will never forget.
After a few days in Cairns, we began
to wonder where the kangaroos were.
It was always my understanding they
were everywhere, sort of a nuisance like
our deer, getting hit by cars and eating
everything in sight. We decided to ask a
few locals, who looked at us like we had
six eyeballs, and responded, at the golf
course, of course. So off we go to the
closest golf course, and there they were.
Laying under the shade trees with golfers
golfing all around them. The golfers
appeared oblivious to them, and the Roos
didn’t appear bothered at all. There were
males and females, some with babies in
their pouches. We were completely in
Precious to look at, but a bit stinky
to hold. Koalas sleep 23 hours a day
sitting in a tree.
faulknerlifestyle.com 19

awe of them — we really were Arkansas
tourists that day.
A highlight of our trip was a low altitude
flight from Lizard Island across the
Great Barrier Reef back to Cairns. It’s the
preferred way to experience the beauty
and vastness of the reef.
Know how to tell an American tourist
in Australia? They are the one’s driving
around with their windshield wipers on!
Yes, it’s true. We continued our journey
north in a rental car, and being British,
they drive on the wrong (left) side of the
road, and the drivers side of the car is also
on the wrong (left) side. So, whenever
you think you are hitting the turn signal,
you are actually hitting the wipers… and
it did happen over and over.
Our next stop was Port Douglas — imagine
Little Rock’s Hillcrest and Heights area
in the tropics. There is a yacht club with
out of this world boats, many restaurants
(we actually ate ox cheek and loved it),
and of course shopping. Port Douglas
was our home base for a few days while
we traveled into the Daintree Rainforest
and Cape Tribulation.
Driving through the Daintree Rainforest
to Cape Tribulation was a slow go at
times, but the centuries old growth of
ferns and trees — some several stories
tall — was breathtakingly beautiful.
The thing that struck us the most was
how well preserved this place was, and
that Australians are very serious about
preserving their natural resources. Cape
Tribulation is where the rainforest meets
the Great Barrier Reef, both so large you
can actually see it from satellite.
We spent a few weeks in Australia, but
there are so many more places to see and
explore in the Land Down Under. Wine
Country, Perth to visit our friends Kim
and Kaz Woodcock, the Opera House,
Harbor Bridge and of course the Outback
too. Hope you’ve enjoyed sharing some
of our adventures in Australia.
Mossman Gorge where we walked
for miles in the rainforest looking for
Cassowary.
We took a brief dive trip out to a
famous dive site on the Great Barrier
Reef called Cod Hole. Potato Cod
larger than us.
To quote Mark Twain “travel is fatal to
prejudice, bigotry, and narrow mindedness.”
What are you waiting for — get out
there and explore this beautiful world we
are so blessed to live in! Until next time…
Conway‘s Flooring and More
BY JENNIFER STANLEY
PHOTOS BY BRANDY STRAIN-DAYER
Eric and Christy Priester, the owners
and operators of Conway Flooring
and Design, are available to assist with
your flooring-related needs and more.
Conway Flooring and Design is located at
4035 McDowell Drive in West Conway.
Prior to its current iteration, the business,
which opened in 1995, was known as
Interiors Only. The Priesters purchased
it in June 2015 and changed the name to
Conway Flooring and Design.
“We offer all types of flooring, including
hardwood, tile, carpet, vinyl, laminate,
luxury vinyl planks, and luxury vinyl tile.
We also offer custom rugs and blinds,
shades and shutters, custom showers, and
backsplashes. We provide both residential
and commercial selections,” explains Eric.
When asked about their service offerings, he
says, “When you purchase your products
with us, we can take care of take-up and
disposal of existing floors, moving furniture,
installation of all residential and commercial
products, shower and backsplash tear-out
and installation, blind installation, and
more. We also have an in-house designer
to walk you through the process.” This
added service is especially helpful to buyers
with general ideas who may be unsure of
how to execute their vision. “Our designer
can really help you put your new look
together.” Conway Flooring and Design
also offers financing options.
When asked about the typical lifespan
of various flooring types, Eric responds,
“Most people change out carpet every
seven to 10 years. Wood and tile are
longer lasting products and are usually
changed out when a new style is wanted
or in the event of some sort of damage,
22 faulkner lifestyle | june/july 2O18

such as a water heater leaking. The actual
lifespan of a floor typically depends on
the original quality and how well it is
taken care of. You do get what you pay
for in some instances. Most floors will
look good for a very long time when
taken care of properly.”
The Priesters founded their company on
integrity. “We feel like our honest and
friendly approach sets us apart from our
competitors. We try to treat each and
every customer like family and to make
sure they feel comfortable shopping with
us and not pressured. We don’t believe in
gimmicks; our customers know exactly
what to expect when they choose their
floors, no surprises. We also attribute
much of our success to our quality
installers who have all worked with us
for years and are very much part of our
work family.” That work family includes
Pierre and Sheri, who work with Eric at
Conway Flooring and Design daily. They
also have three installation crews.
Of their future business plans, Eric
says, “We just want to be a name in the
community that is synonymous with
quality and service… We always offer
free estimates with no gimmicks. Just
quality flooring with great installation at
a fair price. Conway Flooring and Design
would love to be your flooring store.”
Summer Fun in Conway
BY DREW SPURGERS
PHOTOS BY BRANDY STRAIN-DAYER
Happy dog days of summer in
Arkansas! This summer, if you’re
wishing your kids were back in
school, you fortunately have more things
than ever to occupy them!
Here are some ideas for summer
fun. Some of these locations are
already open, some Coming Soon:
The first is the long-anticipated
splash pad.The City of Conway broke
ground on this in mid-May, and it’s
anticipated to open this summer, per the
City of Conway’s Facebook page:
The 5,500 square foot splash pad is
scheduled to be completed this Summer.
It will be free for public use and will
be handicap accessible. The splash pad
will be composed of three activity bays:
toddler, family, and action. These activity
bays will offer a variety play areas
containing dynamic water elements
tailored to various ages and abilities.
Next is still new to Conway: Urban
Air Trampoline and Adventure Park
This indoor play-land is a safe place to
keep the kids inside and entertained (and
also to exhaust them!) year-round. The
park includes attractions such as climbing
walls, a warrior obstacle course, a
tubes playground, climbing hill, battle
beam, and more. If you have younger
children, there is a dedicated play area
for children 7 and under.
Urban Air is located in the Conway
Town Center off Skyline Drive, near the
movie theatre. You can drop in for fun,
or host a birthday party or special event
there. For the kid in all of us, they do
corporate parties, too!
24 faulkner lifestyle | june/july 2O18

Share the Love Kids Club opened in
November of 2015. Their indoor play
facility offers a creativity-stimulating
playground, as well as something for the
adults, per their webpage:
Share the Love Kids Club is an indoor
play space focused on providing your
child a safe, clean, and imaginative
environment to explore and play!
Relax. Don’t worry parents. They had
you in mind when creating the space!
The 3,000+ square foot building will be
refreshing, hip, and full of comfy seating
so you can take a break from the chaos
of life, enjoy time with a friend, or play
with your little one without worrying
about messing up your home! Best part,
they are adjoined to Zeteo Coffee Bar for
all your caffeinated and yummy snack
needs! Coffee + play = win for everyone!
For the older or more active kids,
Jack’s Ultra Sportscould easily be
their full summer! Located at 655 Equity
Drive, Jack’s offers indoor paintball, laser
tag, archery wars, an escape room, and
other attractions. They also offer group
rates and private parties.
Thanks to the hard work of our city,
we also have manyfree parks and
activities all summer long. Visit ConwayParks.com
for a full listing of our
parks (did you know there are 11!?) and
facilities (again, did you know there are
9!?). Don’t forget about our dog park if
you want to bring the furry friends!
In other Coming to Conway news:
Newk ’s Cafehas announced a location
in the Lewis Crossing shopping center,
next to Books A Million. Freddy’s
Frozen Custard & Burgers will also
open on E. Oak Street this summer. Oak
Street will also welcome a new location
for Andy’s Frozen Custard. Whatever
you do this summer, be sure to support
local businesses and have fun!
Drew Spurgers is a Marketing & HR professional. Owner of Kangabloo
communication and leading teams to success. Drew has a passion for helping
local businesses succeed, and a keen ability to see the big picture. In his free
education
School‘s Out for the Summer!
work on all summer. Talk to your child
about their upcoming school year. Ask
them what they want to accomplish, and
share with them what you want them to
accomplish! When school starts, feel free
to share this with their teacher. Be sure
this is visible for you and your student to
see throughout the school year. Celebrate
big when there is an accomplishment!
BY LINDSEY JONES
Summer! Summer is finally here.
Teachers and students can hardly
believe it! We have all worked so
hard the past ten months, and it is time for
some summer fun! Even though summer
is a precious downtime away from school
and schedules, it’s good to have ideas of
ways to stay active with your child to
ensure they do not regress academically
before starting back to school in August!
Here are a few things on my list
that are always good ideas for
summer fun!
We all love FREE! Please do not forget
about the Faulkner County Library. Be sure
to check out their website as they offer
several different free and air conditioned
activities throughout the entire summer.
If you cannot make an event on their
schedule, that is okay. Make it a weekly or
bi-weekly trip. Let your child select a book
that they can read on their own, and let
them read it to you there or at home. Let
them also select a book that maybe they
cannot read, and you read it to them. Ask
them questions about what they have read
as well as what you read to them aloud!
It is so important that you talk to them
about what they have read. For lower
grade students, don’t forget about practicing
those high frequency sight words and
practicing fact fluency- addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division.
Let’s not forget the importance of life skills.
Make a weekly calendar and practice a life
skill a day. Some ideas are: tying shoes,
opening up their own snack, putting on
a coat and zipping it, buckling their own
car seat, making a bed, and keeping up
with their own belongings. If you have
an older student, it is never too early
to start showing them how to balance
a checkbook, make a monthly budget,
prepare for job interviews, or research
colleges. What better time to start than
this summer? Being intentional about
this will help prevent things sneaking up
on you and your child. You definitely
want them prepared when it counts.
One of my favorites - make a school year
bucket list. This is something you can
This next idea is super easy—create a
mommy/me or daddy/me journal. Write
to your child, and have them write back
to you. This would be a great way to
open up communication between you
and your child. You will be surprised at
what they end up sharing with you! Just
talking to your child and having conversations
instead of screen time is a winning
combination! If you have trouble getting
started, just simply write one or two
questions to them. Date it, and show it to
them. Have a set time of when you expect
them to have answered you back. This
could easily be done as often or as little as
you would like. Encourage good writing
techniques- complete sentences, capitalization,
punctuation, and including details.
Lastly, lather up with sunscreen, and go
outside! Visit a park, pack a sack lunch
and enjoy a picnic, go on a walk, take a
hike, or even play with the water hose!
I hope you all enjoy some good quality
family time as we relax and recharge
over this summer. Spending time with
your child is the best gift you can give
them, and it costs only time. This gift
means so much to them, and it will
pay you dividends both now and in the
future. Happy summer!
Oxygen Facial
Oxygen facials are becoming more and more popular
in the spa industry, you will see this rejuvenating
service on many spa menus. These types of facials
particularly began to gain popularity when celebrities such
as Madonna endorsed the skincare service for its ability to
create a plumper and smoother surface, hiding imperfections
and resulting in a more youthful appearance. The oxygen
facial is a popular treatment to indulge in prior to a big event,
and it can be performed on all skin types.
In addition to being a relaxing way to pamper yourself,
oxygen facials provide the following key benefits:
Promotes collagen production: The infusion of oxygen
and vitamins into the skin encourages the production of
collagen, which helps plump up facial features and restore
volume and firmness to skin that has lost elasticity.
Helps detox the skin: Everyday toxins like air pollution and
cigarette smoke rob the skin of much-needed oxygen. An
oxygen facial helps reverse the effects of environmental
pollutants and rejuvenates oxygen-starved skin.
Speeds cell turnover: Medical researchers believe that the
infusion of oxygen into the skin may help the skin create
new cells at a faster pace. This increased cell regeneration
helps speed the healing of facial scars, acne and blemishes.
No side effects: Unlike other more invasive anti-aging treatments,
oxygen facials do not cause any uncomfortable side
effects like stinging, burning or redness. The process of delivering
the oxygen and serum is quite gentle, which makes oxygen
facials suitable for individuals with sensitive skin and for those
who would rather avoid injections or chemical treatments.
After an oxygen facial, you can resume normal activities
immediately, even applying makeup and using your normal
facial products. You can also expect to see a more refreshed
and rejuvenated complexion. One that makes you look wellrested
with a just-back-from-vacation glow.
Conway offers a multitude of dining options on the
weekends, and brunch is no exception. Linda and
I decided to hit two popular downtown spots to
sample their brunch offerings. This month, we satisfied our
appetite enjoying our favorite meal of the day at John Daly
Steakhouse and U.S. Pizza.
John Daly Steakhouse, located at 912 Front Street, serves
a decadent brunch menu on Saturdays and Sundays
beginning at 9:00 a.m. While the brunch menu provides
a variety of sweet and savory options, when I see Eggs
Benedict on the menu, my search is complete. From
the poached eggs to the velvety béarnaise sauce, the
components came together in perfect harmony. I am more
familiar with the traditional hollandaise sauce but am now
a fan of the tarragon-flavored cousin, béarnaise sauce.
The seasoned home fries were the ideal complement
John Daly Steakhouse
Linda, although a brunch enthusiast,
had never tried Chicken and Waffles,
a soul food tradition. Always willing
to broaden her palate, she ventured
outside her culinary box and went
for the sweet and savory. The rich,
well-seasoned chicken atop the
crispy Belgian waffle satisfied having
breakfast and dinner at once. The
sweetness from the spicy maple glaze
elevated this magical brunch union. In
Simmons Bank
Mortgage Loan Originator
SOHO PHOTOGRAPHY
Graduated from Conway High and went to UCA and
CBC, where I graduated Magma Cum Laude with a
bachelors in Business Administration.
I have 2 boys, Hayden (14) and Deagan (11) that keep me
busy with baseball, basketball, church and friends. We are
always running somewhere for sports and enjoy being
outside, running and spending time with our large family. We
absolutely love living in Conway. There are so many things for
families to enjoy from restaurants, running trails and constant
family friendly activities in the community. We don’t plan on
ever leaving Faulkner County.
Began work at Simmons Bank the Monday after graduating
high school as a drive thru teller, and have been here ever
since. I have worked numerous roles at Simmons including,
senior teller, branch manager, and business development
officer, but mortgage loans is by far my favorite position here.
Working in all these different areas helped me gain a greater
understanding of the entire process of banking. I enjoy speaking
at local high schools and sharing my banking experiences
for anyone looking at a career in banking, or simply financial
literacy for their own future.
Simmons offers so many mortgage products to accommodate
all of our customer’s needs. We have Physician Loans, 100%
Financing options, VA, Conventional, FHA, and any other
you could imagine. We are extremely competitive with our
rates and costs. I have a website at www.CJMeeks.com
where you can fill out an application at your convenience and
I will review it and visit with you over your best options. I
love working one on one with my customers to find the best
product for them and educating them on their best options in
purchasing a home. Everyone deserves to be able to buy their
own home, I enjoy showing each person how to do just that.
Simmons has always been so good to me and encouraged me
to be involved in the community. I was humbly acknowledged
in 2014 as one of the top 5 Women in Business for this area.
Throughout my years here I have been able to serve on many
local boards and committees including Junior Achievement,
Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Chamber of Commerce
Education Committee, Friends of CASA, Haven Capital
Campaign, WINC, and Women in Networking. I had the
privilege of serving on the United Way of Central Arkansas Board
of Directors for 7 years, 2 of which I able to lead as president, and
headed up our annual fundraising efforts with Jeans and Bling
for 5 years. Involvement with the nonprofits has allowed me to
show my boys what it means to serve in our community.
I feel incredibly blessed to do what I do every day, working
with my customers and living in this incredible community.
Erik Sward
Bell & Sward, Owner
Where did you grow up and get your education?
I grew up in Little Rock. I received a bachelors of
Biology from the University of Arkansas and a
Masters in Health Administration from UAMS.
What brought you to Faulkner County?
My wife and I moved to Conway for her job and
that is when we came up with the idea to open the
business.
How did you get your idea or concept
for your business?
One day I was wanting to buy a nice, white dress
shirt and did not want to go to the big box stores. I
quickly realized there was no place in Conway to
buy men’s clothing.
What do you love most about
working/living in Faulkner County?
The people in the community.
To what do you attribute your success?
God, amazing customers, supportive friends and
family, reliable employees, and a little hard work
and long hours.
What does the future hold for you in
Faulkner County?
Hopefully many more years of business.
Thomas Cabantac
Veterinarian
Tucker Creek Vet
2018
BUSINESSMEN
of INFLUENCE
Where did you grow up and get your education?
Born and raised in Little Rock, went to UCA for my
undergrad studies. I attended Tuskegee University
School of Veterinary Medicine in Auburn, AL.
What brought you to Faulkner County?
I met my wife, Jenny, while at UCA and we both
fell in love with Conway and always knew we
wanted to land back in Conway after vet school.
We love so many things about living, and owning
a business, in Conway and get excited about the
direction Conway is heading.
What do I love most about my career and why?
I love preventing diseases. I love healing diseases. I
love watching these patients grow up into mature
animals. In turn, when these patients are healthy,
when they are healed, and when they are all grown
up… the client (owner) is happy! If practicing the
best quality medicine that I can possibly do will help
these animals, AND make their human’s happy, then
I feel I have served my purpose.
To what do you attribute your success?
Having parents who supported my dreams from
day one. My wife is my partner and number one
supporter. The dream of Tucker Creek Vet was truly
a joint dream from day one and we are where we are
today because of our partnership in this endeavor.
Friends and associates who heard our dreams and
believed in us enough to back us at all levels.
Tell us about your family.
My wife, Jenny, and I have been married for 15 years
and have 3 amazing daughters: Madden (11 years),
London (9 years), and Quinn (7 years). Our business
is truly an “all hands on deck family business.” Jenny
is the office manager and keeps things moving at
TCV so that I can focus on the medicine. Our girls are
at the clinic often and keep themselves busy trying
to entertain the staff when we don’t have jobs for
them to do. We are a very “active” family. I love to
road bike, run, swim, and race in triathlons. My kids
compete in triathlons, races, Conway Crocs swim
team, softball, volleyball and anything else that gets
us out and about and moving. We love our church
and try to serve in some capacity every week.
Where did you grow up and get your education?
Grew up in Brazil, South America. Came back to the USA
Military Academy while my parents stayed in Brazil. Came
to Arkansas to go to Ouachita Baptist University
2018
BUSINESSMEN
of INFLUENCE
How did you get your idea or concept for your business?
Spending 26 years as a real estate broker gave me valuable
experience and a strong foundation for better guiding the buyer
during their final phase of the purchase process which can be a
difficult and confusing step. My experience led me to the title
business where I provide a deeper level of service to buyers.
What do you love most about working/living?
I truly love the people and this community. I’m an avid
traveler but I always look forward to coming home.
To what do you attribute your success?
Being genuine and authentic with others has helped me build
long-term, meaningful relationships. Success doesn’t come
easily; you must be willing to put in long hours and hard work.
Being involved with the community and networking is a recipe
for success. Giving back and contributing to the community
always comes back to you.
How are you involved in your community?
I’m a member of the Conway Regional Health System Board
of Directors. As a prostate cancer survivor, my service on the
board of the Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation is also near
and dear. I’m privileged to serve as an Honorary Commander
of the 19th AMXS Squadron, L.R A.F.B. And I also serve on the
Board of Directors for ARLEAP the Arkansas Law Enforcement
Assistance Program.
Tell us about your family.
Married to Lynne for 38 years. Our daughters: Cindy is married
to Mike Brown and gave us three granddaughters: Morgan,
Micaela and McKinley. Amy is married to Chris Roys and gave
us two granddaughters: Gaby and Emily. Our son Danny Poe
with a granddaughter Emma. Total of six granddaughters!
Advice for someone just starting out?
Don’t expect success to come overnight. You must work for it.
Never stop learning. The most successful people I know are the
ones who keep digging, who keep trying to improve. Understand
that wherever you are in your career is an opportunity to
learn which will prepare you for continued growth and success.
And one final thing, treat everyone you encounter with respect.
Sometimes the folks who help you out the most in life aren’t
the ones with a big title or prestigious role.
SWEAT by Dr. FiT
Where did you grow up and get your education?
Grew up in El Dorado but graduated Mt. Holly High School.
Attended UCA — graduated with Marketing Degree.
What brought you to Faulkner County?
Receiving a scholarship to UCA. Also after college, I worked in
the corporate world for several years in telecom sales then the
past 20 years as a pharmaceutical representative, and Conway
offered a sense of community but still had a progressive
mindset. What motivated me to start my business in Faulkner
County were the opportunities and potential growth in fitness
along with the people and their progressive mindset.
How did you get your idea or concept for your business?
My business idea actually came when I was sitting in church
and had been asking and believing God would reveal my
purpose in life! In less than 3 weeks, I had started my fitness
company which now has grown into a fitness community,
SWEAT by Dr. FiT. That was almost 8 years ago and being able
to inspire and motivate others to achieve their fitness goals and
take a leap to go after their passion fuels me daily!
To what do you attribute your success?
It’s so many individuals I credit my success to it would take me
forever to name! Definitely my mom who worked endlessly
and tirelessly to inspire me to never give up and always aim
for stars. She instilled a work ethic, drive and passion for life
that still burns deep within this very day! Without my mom, I
wouldn’t be here today because the sacrifices she made in her
own life allowed me to reap the benefits of success I experience
in my current life. Thank my family, my ace, Josh Epps, and the
entire SWEAT Family for partaking in this journey with me!
Do you have hobbies you want to share?
Hmm, that’s a good question! To get away from it all, I love
listening to my son, LiL FiT, teach me about track and field.
Believe it or not, cleaning my studio and exercising are my
hobbies. I really need to pick up a new hobby LOL!
Advice for someone just starting out?
To understand you have to love what you do and not be afraid
to work 7 days a week and get to know the meaning of sacrifice.
Network well and form relationships with key individuals
that can help you out and help promote you beyond your
capabilities. Value your customers and laugh and smile often.
Never take today for granted and prepare for the unexpected!
And most importantly, keep God 1st, enjoy the journey and the
successes, learn through the storms and take calculated risks in
order to grow and stay relevant.
BUSINESSMEN
of INFLUENCE
Where did you grow up and get your education?
I grew up in Alma Arkansas and attended Arkansas Tech
University on a football scholarship.
What brought you to Faulkner County?
I accepted a position in Little Rock for AIG as an Agency
Director. My wife had also graduated at UCA and we somehow
knew we would end up back in the Central Arkansas
area, so Conway and Mayflower was the perfect fit.
How did you get your idea or concept for your business?
While working with AIG Financial Network as a manager and
life insurance agent I had the opportunity to work with several
people and developed some wonderful relationships, but I was
only handling one aspect of their business and for only one
company in AIG. While I was strictly in the Life Insurance and
the financial side of the business I found myself traveling a little
more outside my community to build my business. At one time
I was licensed in seven states and wrote Life insurance 30 miles
south of the Canadian Border in North Dakota. I realized that
long term I wanted to service all of my client’s insurance needs,
and I wanted to establish my business in Faulkner County. By
joining Integrity Insurance, I was able to do just that.
What do you love most about working/living here?
I love how much the community serves each other. Conway
and the surrounding areas do an amazing of supporting its local
businesses, churches and non-profits. I truly believe that most
Faulkner county residents take pride in supporting the community,
and all the businesses and people that make it what it is.
Do you have hobbies you want to share?
I love to fish and be on the water, whether it’s on a boat on
Greers Ferry Lake with my family or on a kayak in the Buffalo
River. My wife and I love to hike and explore the Natural State.
How are you involved in your community?
Between my family and work we support several local nonprofits
by donations of our time and resources. We are very
involved in our local chambers of commerce and I am in the
Conway Area Leadership Institute right now. We also make
a donation to local charities for every referral for business
we receive in the agency. We started community outreach
workshops like self defense classes for women, babysitter certification
classes, discounted drivers education and free jewelry
appraisals. I am also a member of the Habitat for Humanity’s
Young Professionals group that helps raise money for Habitat
for Humanity of Central Arkansas.
Where did you grow up and get your education?
I am from Fort Smith, but am proud to call Conway
home. I graduated from UCA with a Bachelor of Business
Administration in Insurance & Risk Management and will
earn my Master of Business Administration in August.
What brought you to Faulkner County?
I moved to Conway to attend UCA and started my
career at the University of Central Arkansas Center for
Community & Economic Development after graduation.
To what do you attribute your success?
My success is attributed to my undergraduate experience,
support network, and a little hard work. Attending UCA
provided me a quality education, offered me leadership
opportunities, and taught me the importance of serving
others. It also allowed me to develop relationships with
friends and mentors. I’m blessed with a great friend group
and several mentors who encourage me in all I do. Most
importantly, my wife is superwoman. I would not be half
the man I am today without her and certainly married up.
How are you involved in your community?
I serve as a Deliver Hope mentor, American Foundation
and an Emerging Conway Young Professionals board
member. The Chamber is responsible for improving the
lives of area residents, so everything we do is centered
Build quality relationships, work hard, and never stop
learning. A former boss once told me “if you build and
maintain quality relationships everything else will take
care of itself,” and I could not agree more. A strong work
ethic and dedication are two qualities that have allowed
me to overcome every hurdle in my life. As we continue
to become a knowledge-based economy, it is imperative
people continuously improve through formal learning
and professional certifications.

What do you love most about working/living here?
It has been exciting and rewarding to see my community grow,
certain things to death if you were so inclined, but both objectively
and subjectively speaking, Conway and Faulkner County
are simply great places to live, work, learn, and recreate.
To what do you attribute your success?
I consider myself personable but professional, and aggressive
Hard work and being dedicated to the task that First Security
I also realize that my work ethic is something taught to me
I’m also an adjunct professor in the College of Business at
sacrifice whatever it takes to become “successful,” but so
many become so focused on their career that they begin to
lack margin in their lives. This margin can include family time,
personal alone time, prayer time. Margin helps us to differentiate
what is most important as opposed to what is urgent.

Born and raised here and my dad has businesses and
the businesses is a self storage company so the mobile
storage went right along with it. I have always helped
my dad with different things over the years with his
Mobile storage has always been something my
dad wanted to add to the business and we had the
What brought you to Faulkner County?
I was very fortunate to be offered the General Manager
position at Centennial Country Club when it opened in
1998. I spent the next 18 years at Centennial working for
a group of owners that are very respected businessmen,
but more importantly, are great people.
What do you love most about working/living here?
Diversity — and I’m not referencing demographics. Diversity
in education, occupation, recreation. Diversity in how
you worship. Diversity in retail, dining and housing. When
I moved to Conway almost 20 years ago, often times you
had to leave Faulkner County to experience certain things.
That is no longer the case. Our city and county leaders both
past and present should be commended on developing and
nurturing a high level of diversity across the board.
To what do you attribute your success?
Whatever success I may have had can be directly attributed
to my faith, family and friends. Personally, my parents Pat
regardless of the task at hand and instilled in me that no
level of professional success justifies failure at home, and
my wife Natalie who is the most selfless person I know.
Professionally, the experiences, associates and relationships
I formed during 18 years of successes and failures in my
Grew up in Conway. After graduating I moved to Austin, TX to train
To what do you attribute your success?
I grew up with a father who had an extremely hard work ethic and
always admired the way he worked hard to provide for his family.
That stuck with me as someone who had a family at a young age. I’m
29 years old and have a wife, a 12 year old son, and an 8 year old son.
I’ve always wanted to give my boys the same example my father gave
really love to do.
How are you involved in your community?
As a chef my passion has always been working with local farmers
and supporting the central Arkansas grassroots network of small-Agri
economics. Over the past several years I was a board member of
FarmBox2Family which was a program that bought local produce from
local farmers and built 20lb “Farm Boxes” of fresh produce to distribute
to families located in food deserts in our state. As I become more
acquainted with community leaders in Faulkner County, I’d like to help
might not be able to provide it for themselves.
What does the future hold for you in Faulkner County?
I would really like to help the food culture grow in our area. I’ve been
surprised with the amount of culinary talent here. There are a lot of
young culinarians ready to work and hungry to learn, and I hope I can
guide some of these talented individuals in a direction that helps them
grow into chefs/business owners, while helping Conway grow as a
and more eclectic cuisine that Conway has not had in the past.
Also, “Know your Day.” Wake up early, get that extra cup of coffee
in, and plan every step of your day out before you get to work. You
stay ahead of the game and have a leg up on everyone around you. I
can’t stress the importance of this enough and it’s something I coach to
We saw it as being a major hub for businesses and
in heavy duty suspension work. It was a huge
What brought you to Faulkner County?
After serving as student pastor for several years in a multicampus,
broad-outreach church setting in Wisconsin, God
birthed a vision in my family to move back to my home
town to create a ministry specifically for young people
caught in the emotional and relational chaos, dangerous
choices, and emptiness that once marked my life.
How did you get the idea to start your organization?
My life. Every aspect of our ministry began from some
version of my own life story.
What do you love most about working/living here?
This community is incredible. When communicated
properly, and given a clear avenue to contribute, Faulkner
County has continued to step up time and time again.
To what do you attribute your success?
But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into
exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare
you will find your welfare. Jeremiah 29:7 God’s grace is the
only thing I can contribute to “success”. While there are
practical things I have done in ministry/organizational work,
the reality is that I don’t deserve a thing I’ve been apart of, so
our focus at Deliver Hope is to seek the welfare of Faulkner
County. If this community succeeds, so do we.
How are you involved in your community?
Deliver Hope is a community organization focused on helping
at-risk youth find HOPE. We’re dedicated to inspiring young
people to dream beyond their circumstances, excel despite
their disadvantages and helping them reach their fullest God
given potential. Through our partnership with the Faulkner
County Juvenile Court, we’ve seen a 48% reduction in the
number of youth going into our local juvenile detention center.
Tell us about your family.
I love my family. My wife, Andrea and I have been married
for 9 years and have 3 children (8 yr old boy, 6 yr old girl,
2 yr old boy). We have spent the last year renovating a
106 year old home in downtown Conway. We attend City
Church where I serve as one of the teaching pastors. My
wife is a nurse at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Conway is
showing to be a great place to raise our family.
truth on the go
A Redeemed Life
BY ANDREA LENNON
All of us have seasons of life that
we view as wasted years. If you
don’t, hang on. It will happen.
We experience these seasons for different
reasons. Sometimes we are running
from God. Other times we are relying
on our own abilities. Then there are
times when we simply don’t care about
God or His plan. No matter what lands
us in a difficult season, we don’t have
to stay in that place. God is a redeeming
God. He brings meaning out of the
messes we create!
The children of Israel knew about living
during a difficult season of life. They
had been enslaved in Egypt and forced
to do hard labor. God called Moses to
return to Egypt and boldly approach
Pharaoh with this simple message, “Let
my people go!” After some convincing,
Pharaoh complied.
62 faulkner lifestyle | june/july 2O18

“
I always end up
in a spiritual desert
when I judge God’s
plan based on MY
ability to possess it
rather than on GOD’S
ability to provide it.
”
—Andrea Lennon
God had a special plan for the Israelites
and it was a good plan. They were His
chosen people. When other nations
looked at Israel, it was God’s desire for
the nations to see the difference God’s
presence made in their lives.
Many years before the Israelites were
enslaved in Egypt, God promised
Abraham that his descendants would
inherit the Promised Land. This land
was designed to be a place of rest. It
was an incredible piece of land flowing
with milk and honey.
The plan was simple. The Israelites
would leave Egypt under Moses’
leadership. They would travel through
the desert and along the way God would
teach them how to live as a nation.
Twelve spies would go into the Promised
Land with the instruction to survey the
greatness of the land. Here is an important
point: the land was already theirs.
They didn’t have to earn it or buy it, and
they certainly didn’t deserve it. That’s the
thing about the “land” God has for us. It
is an amazing grace gift from Him.
Unfortunately, the wheels came off the
bus. When the twelve spies went into
the Promised Land, they judged the
land based on THEIR ability to possess
it rather than on GOD’S ability to
provide it. This led to big trouble in the
Israelite camp. The outcome was forty
more years of wandering in the desert.
As a result, the Israelites knew about
wasted years.
I have to admit that I love the Israelites
and I can relate to their story. The desert
wandering that I have done has resulted
from the same equation. I always end up
in a spiritual desert when I judge God’s
plan based on MY ability to possess it
rather than on GOD’S ability to provide
it. When I do this, I take my eyes off of
the Lord and put my eyes on myself.
The good news is this. God is a redeeming
God! The original generation died
in the desert and God raised up a new
generation to enter the Promised Land.
God was faithful to teach the Israelites
every step of the way.
We can be assured that the same
principal applies today. God is faithful!
He forgives our sins! In the process, He
uses our desert wandering experiences
to teach us lessons that refine us. He
reminds us that we are His and that
His plan is good. In the end, He sets us
back on the path that He created for us.
I, for one, can testify to the truth that
we cannot out run the grace of God.
Believe me. I tried.
How about you? Are you in a difficult
season of life that is a result of your
bad choices? If so, take heart! God has
a plan. He loves you. Right now you
can take an important step. You can be
honest with yourself and with God.
Confess your need for Jesus and ask
God to lead you every step of the way.
Then look for ways to get back on track.
• If you need to confess something,
confess it.
• If you need to make restitution,
make restitution.
• If you need to ask forgiveness, ask
forgiveness.
• If you need to accept responsibility,
accept responsibility.
• If you need to let something go,
let it go.
• If you need to get help, get help.
• If you need to share a secret from
your past with a trusted friend,
share it.
• If you need to step out in faith and
obey God’s call, step out!
Isaiah 26:3 says, God will keep in
perfect peace those whose minds are
steadfast, because they trust in Him.
When we trust in God and His plan for
our lives, we experience His redemption.
The good, the bad, and the ugly!
God wants it all. I truly believe that the
place of surrender to God and His plan
is the best place we can be!
Shakespeare
web of our life, “ Shakespeare
writes in All’s Well That Ends
“The
Well, “ is of a mingled yarn, good
and ill together.” Like many Americans,
our family has moved enough to be
considered semi-nomadic, and for us,
our moves, while always eventually
positive, involve the pain of saying
goodbye and the loss of an identity
tied to place, making them a “mingled
yarn.” When people ask my children
“where they are from,” they shrug
their shoulders and give all kinds of
answers, usually depending upon how
they believe the inquiring parties define
“home.” It could mean one’s birthplace,
where one graduated from high school,
64 faulkner lifestyle | june/july 2O18

or where one’s parents live. It is a complex
concept, and, last June, when our
family joined my husband Houston,
the new president of the University
of Central Arkansas, in Conway, the
Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre was
instrumental, especially for my then 18
year old daughter Whitney, in making
Conway feel like “home.”
When we first moved to Conway, we
were no different than other families
who move — devastated to leave
friends and our oldest daughter in
Atlanta, excited about our future at
UCA, and hopeful that our children
would share our view of Conway as
a progressive city that values families,
education, and the arts. For Whitney,
this move was particularly sad. On our
last day in Atlanta, a steady succession
of friends visited to say goodbye, and,
with each exit, our house became
literally and figuratively emptier as the
movers loaded our belongings into
the truck. Her friends would spend
the summer together before scattering
across the country to their various
colleges, and she was saying a premature
farewell. Even as she recognized
the incredible opportunity that UCA
offered our family, her years in Atlanta
had been formative to her identity,
for there she found success as a visual
artist, made life-long friends, and developed
the confidence to participate in
her high school theater program, even
landing the role of Olivia in a production
of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.
Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre‘s 12th season opens on
The Lawn at UCA, directly across from the president’s
house, on June 8th, with A Winter’s Tale, one of the
rare opportunities to see this play produced live.
I used her love of theater as a way to
distract her from her sorrow, pointing
to the opening night of the Arkansas
Shakespeare Theatre’s production of
Love’s Labour’s Lost on the lawn across
the street from our house less than a
week after our arrival in Conway as
something to anticipate. The Arkansas
Shakespeare Theatre is a company
hosted by UCA that brings theater
professionals to Conway for engaging
performances, especially for its
summer festival season. We would
host a party for the cast, crew, and
supporters of the Arkansas Shakespeare
Theater at the President’s House opening
night, our first official event to host
as a family. Since the party was days
away, Houston and I felt the pressure
to unpack as quickly as possible.
As we moved boxes to appropriate
rooms, the carpenters for AST built
the set for the play on the lush lawn
in front of McAlister. As we filled the
shelves of the cabinets in the kitchen
with dishes, across the street the actors
began practicing their blocking and
memorizing their choreography on the
newly constructed stage. As we rushed
to prepare our home to receive guests,
the actors, directors, and technicians
practiced late into the night, their
dialogue the soundtrack of our move.
Opening night arrived, and we
attended our first Arkansas Shakespeare
Theatre performance, moved by
Shakespeare’s language and the skill of
the professionals on the stage. Soon
after the performance’s completion,
we rushed to our home to greet a
steady stream of creative, fascinating,
and intelligent people. They were
boisterous and happy, ready to enjoy
themselves after the what they knew
had been a great performance. Whitney
met set designers, directors, costume
designers, actors, and artists from
Chicago, Los Angeles, and, her soonto-be
home, New York City, where she
would attend college in the fall. The
members of the company encouraged
her to stay in contact with them and
offered her tips for living in the New
York, a place many of them had called
home at different times. Everyone
there spoke highly of his or her time
in Conway, and many had worked
for multiple summers in Conway
because of their respect for AST and
the pleasant experiences they had here.
As the stragglers left the party, Whitney
turned to me with the first genuine
smile that I had witnessed in weeks
and said, “That was cool.”
As the summer continued, Whitney
found that she loved Conway, but
she could not ignore that when her
friends Facetimed her or texted her,
they recounted their activities together,
leaving her feeling isolated and lonely.
The anticipation of starting a new
stage of life in a few short months also
intensified her boredom, and, frankly,
she tired of us. That is when we would
find her on many a dark, humid Arkansas
evening, seated with a bowl of
cereal in hand on the front steps of our
house watching repeat performances
of Love’s Labour’s Lost. With the traffic
blocked, she had a perfect view, part
of the 8,000 people who saw one of
ASTs performances last season, and yet
separate, as if Shakespeare wrote the
entire spectacle just for her. In jasminescented
air, she, from her new front
porch, watched the actors perform
Shakespeare’s dissection of the human
experience, which, regardless of the
setting, always includes some laughter
and some tears, just like life. In Love’s
Labour’s Lost, the three main characters
who once sought frivolity find purpose
and adulthood, and, in the process,
learn to wait for that which they most
desire, just as Whitney had to wait
through a bittersweet summer for
college to start in the fall. After each
faulknerlifestyle.com 65

performance, Whitney would reenter
the house, a little less frustrated and a
little more patient for having escaped
into Shakespeare’s imagination and,
while there, finding an experience
similar to her own.
At its best, theater provides a communal
experience that reminds us of
our shared humanity, that our journey
through this life is not a solitary one,
and we are thankful for the comfort
and distraction that theater provided
for us during a transitional time in our
lives. Prior to the first production last
summer, we sat on the front lawn of
UCA with strangers, many of whom
are now dear friends, and we hope to
meet many more of our neighbors and
make even more friends at this season’s
performances. We feel lucky to live in a
community like Conway that supports
an endeavor as special as the Arkansas
Shakespeare Theatre, a community that
we proudly call our “home.”
Boy Scouts Build Bat Houses
The boys of Pack 453 in Conway have
been busy this year! Under the direction of
Scoutmasters Tray Fowler and Joe Rogers, the
Pack is chartered by Harvest Church of the
Nazarene. Despite being the youngest pack in
town, they have managed to become one of
the largest and most active Cub Scout packs in
the state, earning the 2017 Foothills District
“Pack of the Year” award. They attribute
their success to their enthusiastic boys and
committed parents who take pride in putting
on a quality program for their children.
In recent months they have camped in
several locations (and temperatures), hiked
exciting trails, visited planetariums, toured
fire stations, camped overnight on a submarine,
dug for diamonds, and completed several
community service projects. The final meeting
of this school year was held at beautiful
Beaverfork park where the boys constructed
and hung several bat houses around the lake
to help the bat population, subsequently
helping control the mosquitos in the area.
The boys of Pack 453 would like to thank the
community for all of their support and are
looking forward to even more growth and
adventures in the coming months!
Our Faulkner Fam: The Vances
Your Names:
Chad, Lacey, and Scarlet.
Dog children are Gunner,
Jetta, Brown and Yellow
Where are you from?
Him: Wynne AR
Her: Jonesboro AR
Where do you work?
Him: Pharmacist at Cornerstone
Pharmacy in Greers Ferry
Her: Head Human at Hounds Hideaway
How long have you lived in
Faulkner County?
Both: 7 years
How did you two meet?
We knew of each other from Undergrad
at ASU but officially met via Facebook
in 2011 when Chad was doing
Pharmacy school rotations in Jonesboro
When you get a date night
where do you go?
We start out with big ideas and then
somehow always end up at Damgoode
Pies in Little Rock
If you had to live somewhere
else in the world where would
that be?
Same answer for both of us — we’d
love to spend fall/winter anywhere
in Arkansas and spring/summer in
Montana or Colorado
Describe parenting in one
sentence:
Him: It’s like someone convincing you
to trade your free time and favorite
hobbies for something you’re not sure
you’re going to enjoy or be good at, and
then it turns out to be even better than
you could have imagined.
Her: It’s actually easier than I thought
it’d be, because we got super lucky with
such a happy, sweet, easygoing baby!
When you shop local (for fun)
what stores are always on
your list?
Him: Bell & Sward
Her: Simply Sweet Kids, E. Leighs,
and Patticakes Bakery
What is your favorite thing to
do as a family?
Right now our favorite thing to do is
watch Scarlet’s reaction to trying new
foods, and we also love taking her to
see the grandparents and her cousins.

What do you love most about
living in this community?
Him: It’s small enough to get to know
people but big enough to have everything
you might need.
Her: I am constantly in awe of how
supportive both the city of Conway
and the people here are of small
business. This is a place where you
can have a big-city idea, put it to
work, and everyone will genuinely
want you to succeed. After having
lived and worked in other places, I
think it’s a more unique quality than
most people realize. And, of course, I
love that there are a ton of crazy dog
people here! :)
“
It‘s like someone
convincing you to trade
your free time and
favorite hobbies for
something you’re not
sure you’re going to
enjoy or be good at, and
then it turns out to be
even better than you
could have imagined.
