Celebrating 40th Anniversary
with ”Deconstructed Festival“
Presented by:
A series of family-friendly events will take place over a 40-dayperiod
Mary Margaret Satterfield, the
Conway Area Chamber of
Commerce’s director of Toad
Suck Daze and events, spoke with the
North Metro Business Journal about
plans for the largest, free-admission
family festival in Arkansas, which is
celebrating its 40th year in 2021. This
year also marks a milestone anniversary
for Satterfield; it is her 20th Toad
Suck Daze.
“That’s just counting the festivals I’ve
helped plan. It doesn’t count the ones
I attended as a kid,” said the Conway
native.
Since Satterfield’s involvement as the
festival organizer, Toad Suck Daze
has taken place on the streets of
downtown Conway during the first
weekend of May. (Its original location
was on the banks of the Arkansas
River in the Toad Suck community.)
Before the pandemic, more than
100,000 people would attend the
three-day festival. In the age of social
distancing, Toad Suck Daze organizers
made the decision to hold the 40th
festival at a smaller scale to keep the
crowd size at a minimum.
“We believe it’s the responsible thing to
do from a public health perspective,”
Satterfield said. “We have developed a
‘deconstructed’ festival that brings back
some of the popular, socially distanced
activities we introduced in 2020 combined
with some traditional favorites.
”Everything will be in the
spirit of Toad Suck Daze.“
Between the end of April and the
middle of June – close to 40 days to
commemorate the 40th anniversary
– Toad Suck Daze will host several
live events in partnership with the
Arkansas Game & Fish Commission,
the Museum of Discovery, the City
of Conway, and a host of corporate
sponsors. First Arkansas Bank & Trust
is the presenting sponsor of the festival
for the third year in a row.
All events will take place outdoors,
and face masks are encouraged.
Here’s what to expect.
Centennial Bank
Airplane Parade
Friday, April 30 | 4-7pm
Toad Suck Daze is partnering with the
City of Conway and the Lollie Bottoms
Pilot Association to bring back the popular
Centennial Bank Airplane Parade introduced
in 2020. The second-annual event
will expand to include viewing areas at the
Conway Regional Airport at Cantrell Field
and at TGI Friday’s. The pilots – including
the Bulldog Flight Formation Team – will
fly all over Conway, so many people will
have the ability to view the planes from
their homes. A map of the routes and
designated viewing locations is available
at toadsuck.org.
At the airport, spectators will be able to
watch the planes take off and land and
“
Is Toad Suck Daze
happening?
”
It is the question on many people’s
minds as vaccinations ramp-up and
COVID-19 cases fall, bringing a sense
of normalcy to Arkansas and the U.S.
The answer?
“ Yes,
it‘s happening. It just
won‘t look the same.
”
can view vintage aircraft on the ground.
A food truck and sponsor booths also
will be set up on the airport grounds.
Planes will take off shortly before 6
p.m., and the air show will last 45
minutes. The Conway Regional Airport
is located 10.3 miles west of Interstate
40, along U.S. Highway 60 (Dave Ward
Drive) to Lollie Road.
Sponsors of the Centennial Bank
Airplane Parade include Centennial
Bank, Rogers Group, Crain Hyundai
and Crain Genesis of Conway, Wonder
State Box, the US Marines, Satterfield
Fuels, and Phillips 66
Taste of Toad Suck
Every Friday in May | 11am–7pm
Food vendors will be stationed in
downtown Conway at Rogers Plaza
on May 7, May 14, May 21, and May
28, serving up some Toad Suck Daze
favorites – corn dogs, chicken-on-a-stick, funnel cakes, turkey
legs, walking tacos, barbecue, and more. Every Friday, two
food vendors will be set up, so the menu will change weekly.
Visit toadsuck.org for a list of participating concessionaires and
what they plan to serve and when.
Located near the arch, Rogers Plaza is the area in front of the
Conway Area Chamber of Commerce at 900 Oak Street.
Crain Hyundai and Crain Genesis of Conway is the sponsor
of Taste of Toad Suck.
Toad Suck Tinkerfest
Saturday, May 8 | 9am–3pm
Established in 2018 in partnership with Acxiom, the Museum
of Discovery, and the Conductor, Toad Suck Tinkerfest
provides hands-on, educational activities that incorporate
the elements of the STEAM educational curriculum: science,
technology, engineering, art, and math. Admission is free,
but advance registration is recommended, as the number of
attendees will be limited to ensure adequate social distancing.
Sponsors of Tinkerfest include: Acxiom Corporation,
Wal-Mart, and Virco.
Toad Races
Thursday, May 13 | 4-6:30pm
The parking lot at the corner of Parkway and Main Streets in
downtown Conway will become the site of the 2021 toad
races. The Toad Master will kick off the festivities with the
V.I.T. (Very Important Toad) Race followed by races that are
open to the public. The open toad races will culminate with the
World Championship. Advance registration is encouraged for
the open races, but walk-ups are welcome.
In addition, the Jump for Education Race, which brings
together the winners of toad races held at area elementary
schools, will take place on May 13. Every elementary school
student in Faulkner County will receive a Toad Toter from
their school.
Racers can bring their own toad (frogs are not allowed), or
they can race a toad that is provided. During the week of
May 10, toads will be accepted at the Conway Area Chamber
of Commerce. Chamber staff will release the toads to their
natural environment following the races.
Sponsor of the Toad Races is Car-son Construction.
The West Conway home of Sharolette
and Anthony Ellis is an open,
calming oasis. The couple has lived
in the 2408 square foot, three bedroom,
two-and-a-half bath home for two years.
They enlisted Jonathan Engelkes with
Jengel Custom Homes, Inc. to build
the house, saying he “was wonderful to
work with from beginning to end.”
The brick exterior is painted Sherwin
Williams China White; the effect is
modern, yet inviting. The clean lines
outside the home extend to its interior
style. Interior paint colors include the
shades Sherwin Williams Pure White
and Tidewater, used throughout.
“
The color white is a peaceful, classic, and
clean look for me, and I never tire of it.
”
—Sharolette Ellis
Impressively, Sharolette does her own
interior design. “My style is transitional
modern glam. I love for our home to
have a very peaceful, inviting, and
comfortable look with a little sparkle.”
Mission accomplished, as the monochrome
fun pops of color, often in shades of
that extra je ne sais quoi.
Sharolette has always loved design. “I
knew early on, before we started this
home, that white would be the main
color for the interior and the exterior,”
she says. She scoured the internet and
print magazines for inspiration. “Also, I
knew I wanted black trim for the exterior
of our home to make the trim stand out.
With white paint on the interior for the
trim, walls, and cabinets, it gives me
unlimited color options for accessories,
like pillows and artwork. The color white
is a peaceful, classic, and clean look for
me, and I never tire of it,” she says.
Sharolette is consistently drawn to her
dining room. “The formal dining room
is my favorite area of this home. There
is much in the way of sparkle and light
in the room with the furniture, accessories,
and the lighting. This room has
lots of natural light and glam, mirrored
furniture, which makes it a happy space
for me.” The gold accents and displayed
crystal pieces add to the feel of the room.
The Ellis family shops local as often
as possible. In fact, the majority of
their furniture was purchased at Cajun
Brothers Furniture & Mattress in
Downtown Conway. “The wonderful
thing about Cajun Brothers is their
great staff, who is always willing to
help you find what you are looking for.
And, if it is not in stock, you can order
the piece and receive the furniture in a
few short weeks,” says Sharolette.
As for the décor, much was purchased at
Classic Touch, Ye Olde Daisy Shoppe,
and Tipton & Hurst. “Some of my most
prized pieces in our home are the crystal
collection that my husband has gifted
me over the years. In addition, there is
a small, light blue-with-gold trim Avon
bottle in my bathroom that my mother
owned for years and passed on to me.
It coordinates with the bathroom, and
I think of my mom each time I see the
bottle,” she says.
The back yard features a pool, installed
by H2O Pools, which also incorporates
the color white. The pool is 12 feet by
28 feet, which is perfect for floating or
swimming laps. “Conway Remodeling
built the lovely pavilion and provided
the best customer experience. We added
a couple of things last minute, and they
were great to accommodate us,” she says.
As for the gorgeous light fixtures,
“Most all the lighting in our home
came from Hambuchen Electric here
in Conway. Gina helped us find the
perfect light fixtures for the look I
wanted to achieve. They have a great
selection with great prices and one-onone
customer service,” says Sharolette.
The Ellis family is thrilled with the
overall effect of their home, saying,
“This home has a calm and inviting feel
for us, and we hope all who enter here
can feel that too.”
selected is the 1964 Conway
High School football team. That
group went 11-0 and captured
the state championship,
becoming the first Class AA
team in the state to ever do so.
Hal Crafton
Crafton played junior high basketball
at St. Joseph but moved across town
to play for Conway High School. He
also played football, but it was on
the hardwood where Crafton really
shined. The Wampus Cats went 82-13
during his three-year career and he was
named all-state in 1973 and 1974. A
6’1” guard, Crafton was a great passer
and playmaker. He helped the Cats
win the 1973 and 1974 AAA state
championship, scoring 30 points in the
title game as a senior. He went on to
play basketball at UCA.
Tom Mabry
Mabry won the discus at the AA state
meet as a senior in 1968. A lineman,
he was also a key part of the Wampus
Cat’s 1967 football team that finished
10-1 and with the state No. 1 ranking
in class AA. He was named all-state
football in 1967 and played in the 1968
all-star game. Mabry was a three-year
letterman at University of Arkansas
from 1969-71 on the offensive line.
Following his senior season, he
played in the 1972 Hula Bowl and the
Coaches All-American Game. Mabry
was an 8th round NFL draft pick by
New York Giants in 1972.
Wilbur Owen
Owen won the Frank E. Robins Award
denoting the top senior athlete in 1960.
He was all-state football in 1959 and
played in in the 1960 all-star game.
Owen also helped the Wampus Cats
capture the 1960 state track championship,
winning three individual races
and anchoring three winning relay
teams. Running track at UCA, he was
four-times named All-AIC as he helped
the Bears win four conference titles.
Owen has been inducted into the UCA
Sports Hall of Fame and the Arkansas
Track & Field Hall of Fame.
Reuel Shepherd
Shepherd was a three-sport standout
at Conway High, winning the Frank E.
Robins Award as a senior in 1993. He
played quarterback for the Wampus
Cats and was named all-state in 1992
and played in the 1993 all-star game.
He also played basketball and was a
high jumper in track. Shepherd played
football at Murray State, where he
switched to linebacker. He was named
second-team All-Ohio Valley Conference
in 1995 and helped the Racers win
the OVC championship in 1995 and
1996, qualifying for NCAA Division
I-AA playoffs both years.
Ken Stephens
Stephens excelled at football at CHS
and was high point man at the 1948
an NAIA All-American on the oval.
He served as football coach of the
Wampus Cats from 1958-59 before
moving to NLR High School where
he won three state titles. Stephens
coached football at UCA from 1972-
finishes. Taylor won 38 conference
championships: 20 golf, 11 volleyball,
and seven basketball. She led Conway
Junior High basketball to a remarkable
140-game winning streak from 1990 to
1996. Taylor has been inducted into the
Savannah Case, originally from
Conway, recently started a food
blog on Instagram and has quickly
become a favorite source for recipes. She
loves cooking for her husband, Jordan,
and their daughter, Hazel. Her fun style
and mix of no-nonsense recipes your
family will love can be found on Instagram
under the account Mybohomie.
We’ve already made several of her
recipes in our own kitchens, and they
were all a hit. Follow her on Instagram.
You and the mouths you feed will be
happy you did!
Why did you decide to start blogging?
I started my Instagram page
because I was getting asked often to
share a recipe when I posted things I
cooked onto my personal page. I had
many people ask me to either create a
cookbook, which I hope someday I can,
or to start an account strictly for cooking
and sharing recipes. So, this January I did
just that. It has been so fun cooking and
creating tasty foods for everyone to try
themselves.
What do you love most about blogging?
I love being able to help you create
a delicious meal you and your family
can enjoy. I think it’s important to sit
faulknerlifestyle.com 27

down to a home cooked meal with
your family. I also want to empower
you. You can do this! And I hope my
recipes make it easier.
How did you come up with the name
Mybohomie? I came up with the name
Mybohomie because I’m inviting you
into just that. My style is very bohemian,
our home reflects that, but I wanted it to
be welcoming so I used a pun on words.
Homie as in your friend, but also as a
feeling you get when you’re somewhere
comfortable. I hoped my recipes from
our home would bring all the feel goods
to yours, and you would consider me
your friend along the way.
What is your ideal breakfast menu?
Breakfast is ever changing in our home.
I love cooking breakfast foods and my
family loves to eat them! My little girl
loves my pancakes. I think she would
eat them daily if I would make them.
The same for my husband, but he loves
a good omelet even more. I’m a bread
girl, too, but I’d rather have a cinnamon
coffee cake with a fresh brewed cup of
coffee to go with it. How can you just
choose a couple things, though? Let’s
cook quiche, scrambled cheesy eggs,
French toast, hashbrown casserole,
muffins, apple fritters, fried egg sandwiches,
breakfast casseroles, bacon, ham,
and sausage balls. Are y’all hungry yet
because I am! A lot of these wonderful
dishes have already been shared on my
Instagram page, and if they aren’t there
yet…don’t worry! It’s all coming.
What is a kitchen gadget you can‘t
live without? There are many, but I
do love my food processor. A good
baking sheet is so important. And also, a
hamburger meat chopper! I know it might
sound odd but Google it. They are sold
almost anywhere, and it makes chopping
ground beef in the skillet a breeze.
How would you describe your blog
to new followers? An easy way to plan
meals with helpful hints to make it happen.
Here are a few of Savannah‘s most
liked recipes on Instagram.
The Boho Bacon
Burger
INGREDIENTS
1 lb. ground beef
1 egg
1 tsp. Cavender’s seasoning
2 tbsp. Italian salad dressing
1 tbsp. Worcestershire
1 tbsp. grape jelly
1/2 sleeve Ritz crackers, crumbled
Sliced cheese
Bacon (Petit Jean always)
Brioche Buns
Butter
INSTRUCTIONS
Fry the bacon and set aside.
Mix everything together and separate
into patties (I made 5).
Melt 2 tbsp of butter or oil if you didn’t
fry bacon first (but OMG—bacon grease
is so good to cook your burger in).
Medium heat, 4 minutes per side if you
want it cooked through but still so juicy.
Add cheese the last minute and a
half and cover so it melts (if you don’t
have a lid use a sheet pan it works
just as good).
Butter the buns and fry ‘em so they
get that good texture that makes a
burger perfect.
Spinach Cheese Dip
INGREDIENTS
1/2 lb of Velveeta, cubed
16 oz Spinach Dip (I use Market Fresh
brand from Walmart)
1/2 c. milk
1 can Rotel Tomatoes
1 tsp. chili powder
1/4 tsp. onion powder
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/4 c. fresh cilantro, chopped
1/2 tsp. cumin
1/2 tsp. paprika
1/4 tsp. cayenne (optional)
NOTE: I also like to add a scoop of Harry
& David’s Pepper and Onion Relish to
my bowl! It’s a game changer! If y’all
haven’t started buying that yet, you are
missing out. We buy it by the case, but
they also sell it at our local Walmart.
INSTRUCTIONS
Turn Crock-Pot on high, add cubed
Velveeta cheese, milk & Rotel.
Add spinach dip.
Add rest of spices.
Cook on high for 30 minutes and stir,
cook another 20-30 (watch so the sides
don’t start to burn). Then turn to warm.
If you add a full pound of Velveeta then
just double the spices and milk. You
don’t have to add more spinach dip.
You can also do this in the microwave
or on the stove top.
“
I think it‘s important to sit down to a home cooked
meal with your family. I want to empower you. You
can do this! And I hope my recipes make it easier.
St. Joseph Elementary School is celebrating
two special kindergarten teachers, Mrs.
Lois Coney and Mrs. Charlotte Moix.
Together, they have a combined teaching
experience of over 60 years, and both will
retire at the end of this school year.
Of their tenure, St. Joseph Elementary
School Principal Courtney Pope, Ed. S says,
“This says so much about them and their
dedication to education, especially Catholic
education…I am truly appreciative of their
dedication and service to St. Joseph School.”
“
It has truly been an honor to work alongside and learn from these two
amazing women and educators. They both truly embody all that a kindergarten
teacher should be. They have been a treasure to St. Joseph School faculty, staff
and most importantly the students lives they’ve shaped.
Lois Coney
Lois Coney has been married to Steve
for 45 years. They have three children,
Shannon Foster, married to Travis;
Amanda Fowlkes; and son Jon Paul,
who passed away in 2016. They have
five “precious grandchildren,” including
Alexis, 20; Noah, 16; Ally, 14; Anna
Klaire, 14; and Ava, 12.
Lois has taught for 31 total years, 24
of those at St. Joseph. “I taught third
grade, fifth grade, and kindergarten at
Oak Grove Elementary in North Little
Rock for seven years and kindergarten
at St. Joseph for the past 24 years.”
When asked why she choose teaching
as a profession, Lois says, “Being a
teenager in the late 60s and 70s (telling
my age), I babysat quite a bit in my
neighborhood, and I taught little ones
how to swim at the YMCA in the
When asked what she will
miss most about working
at St. Joseph, Lois says,
“
Now come the tears. I
will miss seeing all of those
sweet, smiling faces each
day as I enter my school.
St. Joseph has been a
family to me for so long.
I will miss going to Mass
with my students.
”
—Lois Coney
summer. Those little faces gave me a
good idea about what I wanted to do!”
She went on to earn her Bachelors in
Elementary Education from the University
of Central Arkansas, where she was
a member of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority.
“I am so thrilled my granddaughter
Alexis followed me and is a member
now,” she says of her alma mater.
Lois has many fond memories of her
teaching years. “On my first day of my
first year, I started off by peeling apples
and cooking applesauce, not a normal
first day for a new teacher,” she laughs.
“Walking to Downtown Conway for
field trips was always fun. Also, our
entire school painted part of the mural
that is downtown. For many years,
we had field trips at Lollie’s Schaefer’s
Pumpkin Patch at Angie Rawls’ family
farm, making this a great adventure for
our students and especially having the
greatest bus driver, Mr. Lum! This year
has been so different with the Coronavirus.
One day, my class was watching
one of the many videos we do for our
online students; when I was on the
screen, a sweet student said, ‘There’s two
Mrs. Coneys,’ which melted my heart!”
When asked what she will miss most
about working at St. Joseph, Lois says,
“Now come the tears. I will miss seeing
all of those sweet, smiling faces each
day as I enter my school. St. Joseph has
been a family to me for so long. I will
miss going to Mass with my students.
I have been so blessed to work with
our wonderful staff, principal, and my
special co-worker, Charlotte Moix. I
was so honored to receive the Honorary
Alumni Award in 2018.”
Though she will miss the school, staff,
and students terribly, Lois looks forward
to retirement. “I have always wanted
to volunteer at a hospital after losing so
many members of my family. I want to
give back, and I remember how kind
and caring the volunteers were when we
needed them. Steve and I plan to do a little
traveling as well, and I plan to continue to
watch my grandkids in all of their sports
and activities.”
Charlotte Moix
Charlotte Moix is married to Greg,
and their family includes daughter and
son-in-law Catherine and Mike Brunetti,
granddaughter Piper Brunetti, and
daughter Rebecca Moix.
Charlotte has been a teacher for 37 years,
all at St. Joseph. “I taught second grade for
a year, then moved to kindergarten where
I’ve remained for 36 years,” she says. She
always wanted to be a teacher. “I loved
children and from a young age enjoyed
watching them learn. I spent time with
my mother’s friend in her kindergarten
classroom when I was in high school
and knew I wanted to make a difference
in the lives of children by teaching. My
grandmother was a teacher, and I grew up
hearing her stories as well. I think all of
those experiences led me to teaching.”
She earned her Bachelor of Science
in Education - Elementary and Early
Childhood from the University of Central
Arkansas. As for a favorite memory from
her years of teaching, Charlotte says, “My
favorite memories are those of the Easter
play we put on each Lenten season. There
is something about working with the
children to tell the story of Jesus’ journey
from Holy Thursday through His resurrection
on Easter Sunday.”
When asked what she would miss most
upon retirement, she says, “The people!
St. Joseph School is a family – faculty,
staff, students, and parents. I will greatly
miss them all. I have had the privilege
of teaching so very many wonderful
students and ‘grand-students,’ which is
what I call the students whose parents I
also taught, and with so many amazing
teachers and staff.”
As for retirement plans, Charlotte says, “I
plan on spending time with our granddaughter,
as well as reading, volunteering,
and traveling.”
Shonda Smith: DIY Expert
BEFORE
Shonda Smith of Conway is a
proverbial “Do-It-Yourself (DIY)”
expert. Her West Conway home is
a virtual Pinterest board in how-to home
improvements. Her family, including
Monty, Carter, and Mary Claire Smith
and Diane Jefferson, also enjoys the
fruits of Shonda’s fun “home work.”
By day, Shonda serves as the gifted and
talented teacher at Ellen Smith Elementary
School in Conway. They purchased
their home nearly five years ago, saying,
“The size made it possible for my mom
and sister to move in with us.”
faulknerlifestyle.com 39

BEFORE
Since that time, Shonda has transformed
many areas of the home, including the
laundry room, adding a bedroom accent
wall, painting most areas, and revamping
a staircase. She is no stranger to DIY,
however. “Before this house, I tiled all
the floors in wet areas and the bathroom
counters, as well as the backsplash in
the kitchen. I also built an arbor and two
beds,” says Shonda.
She has always had an interest in design.
“As a kid, I dreamed of renovating my
bedroom and was so happy when my
parents replaced the red shag carpet
with brown shag carpet and the couch
with big red roses all over it with the
velour-ish cream couch that had brown
landscapes all over it. Both were very
trendy at the time,” she says. “My DIY
nature started when we bought our first
house. I painted the kitchen purple the
same day we closed on it.”
Shonda cites the staircase as the most
challenging project in their current
home. “It was originally covered in
carpet. We had to add treads and
risers. We also added board and batten
to the walls. It was a tough place to
reach, and there were lots of angles,”
Shonda calls her personal aesthetic
“traditional sentiment. I like to use
sentimental, everyday-type pieces in
my house. The strawberry carrier my
grandfather made holds cutting boards
and wooden spoons in the kitchen. I
have dough rollers that belonged to
both my grandmothers, my mom,
and a few of my own in a basket
in the kitchen. In my living room, I
have framed a locket that belonged to
my grandmother and a watch of my
grandfather’s. I also hung a marble
board my grandfather made me when
I was a child. A cuckoo clock I bought
when I went to Switzerland also hangs
in a frame above my couch.”
Shonda’s future DIY roadmap includes
her kitchen and bathrooms. As for her
advice to aspiring DIYers, she says,
“Talk to people who know what they
are doing, and just go for it. Also, buy
extra product just in case you make
Conway Public Schools
’Teacher of the Week‘ Awards
PROG R AM
SPONSORS
The Conway Public
Schools Foundation
has introduce a
program commemorating
teachers, starting with a district-wide
‘Teacher of the Week’ initiative.
This program aims to recognize the
outstanding efforts of educators in the
community by highlighting those who have
excelled in their teaching programs and
methods. This initiative is sponsored by
PattiCakes Bakery, and Faulkner Lifestyle
as a media sponsor, highlighting the
Teachers of the Week in each publication.
The program builds on the Foundation’s
longstanding efforts to partner with
educators to enrich the learning environment
for students. “The mission of the
Conway Public Schools Foundation is
to empower educators to elevate the
student experience,” Drew Spurgers,
CPSF Board President, said. “Anything
we can do to encourage our educators
and recognize their efforts is worthy
work. We’re proud of this program!”
Each week, CPSF will recognize
local educators for their outstanding
performance based on the community’s
nominations. Teachers can be nominated
by administrators, parents, other teachers,
and even students. One recipient is
selected and announced live weekly on
CPSF’s Facebook page.
The first educator to be featured in this
program was Julie Turner, a Kindergarten
teacher at Ellen Smith Elementary. “Thank
you so much for the honor of being the
Teacher of the Week. I am overwhelmed
with gratitude and feel very blessed to
be the first recipient,” said Mrs. Turner.
“This program is the perfect way to honor
teachers for their hard work and dedication
during these unprecedented times.”
Mrs. Turner was nominated by her
principal, Ms. Holly King. “Mrs. Turner
has a huge heart and has worked so
hard to learn how to effectively teach
kindergarteners virtually. She loves her
students and is always willing to help
others! We are so blessed to have her at
Ellen Smith,” said Ms. King.
If you know of a teacher who does
an extraordinary job and goes above
and beyond, visit CPSFoundation.com
to submit your nomination for any
teacher at any time.
School: Ellen Smith Elementary
Position: Kindergarten
Nominator: Parent
This is what a parent had to say about Mr. Williams…
Mr. Williams has been such a wonderful teacher
for my child. He comes home every telling what he
has learned in class. He loves to share songs that
Mr. Williams has taught to help them learn new
things like months of the year. My son even has
to take a hat to school so that he can wear it in the
car rider pick up just like Mr. Williams. Thanks
for being such an awesome teacher and keeping
my son engaged in learning.
Andrew Sills | April 16, 2021
School: Bob Courtway Middle School
Position: 7th Grade Science
Nominator: Administrator
This is what an administrator had to say about Mr. Sills...
Mr. Sills has taken a very helpful lead role in regard to our use
of Schoology. As a previous user in another district, he came
in with background knowledge that none of the rest of us had.
He also attended Training of Trainers this summer and has
become a go-to teacher on our campus to assist others with this
platform. Additionally, he helps every day after school with duty
even though he doesn’t have to. He goes above and beyond in a
year that is extremely challenging. He makes a big difference at
Courtway and we are so proud to have him. #TogetherWeCan
Rock Pond Pros and The Women‘s Leadership Network
Team up to present the 2021 Central Arkansas Open
and Launch their Dream Without Limits Initiative
The 2nd annual Central Arkansas
Open Professional Women’s golf
tournament is scheduled to be
played May 12-14 at Centennial Valley
Country Club. It is the 5th tournament in
the 11 tournament Women’s All Pro Tour
organized by K&G Sports. The tournament
is presented by Rock Pond Pros.
“It was exciting to experience the successful
first Central Arkansas Open tournament
in 2020, despite all of the COVID-19
challenges,” Pete Tanguay, Tournament
Chair and President of Rock Pond Pros
said after last year’s event. “I learned
that what we were doing had more to
do with providing an opportunity and
venue for 80+ committed young women to
pursue their dreams than it did about golf.
Families in Conway opened their homes
and hosted all of the golfers who asked for
housing, an army of volunteers took care of
the details and we enjoyed a week of golf
and making friendships, some of which
will last a lifetime.”
Planning for 2021 began with the decision
to add a tagline to the event that communicated
what was really happening.
We were providing opportunities and
support for women, encouraging them to
DREAM WITHOUT LIMITS.
Pete Tanguay met with Shelley Mehl
and Amy Gilstrap of the Women’s
Leadership Network (WLN) on March 8,
International Woman’s Day. The decision
was made to rename the tournament to
the WLN Central Arkansas Open.
According to Amy, who will lead
the effort, “The Women’s Leadership
Network has been looking for an event
to get behind that shared our vision to
empower and support all women, especially
one that would help us reach into
the younger generation of future women
leaders. We look forward to working with
the Central Arkansas Open team to take
this tournament to the next level in 2021,
for golf and sports, for our community,
and to empower women to DREAM
WITHOUT LIMITS.”
The 2021 WLN Central Arkansas
Open will include a luncheon for
high school and college ladies who
are interested in pursuing professional
athletics. They will get to hear from some
of the touring pros on what it takes and
what the day in the life of a pro athlete
looks like. There will be a family oriented
Meet the Pros event on Sunday evening
(Mother’s Day) before the tournament as
well as a Pro/Am tournament on Monday
that will give local amateur golfers the
opportunity to play with the pros. All
this will be capped off with three days
of competitive golf with $50,000 in prize
money and serious dreams on the line.
For more information, visit our website
or contact us if you have questions,
would like to volunteer or are able to
financially support this event to help
women DREAM WITHOUT LIMITS.
You can also follow us on Facebook and
Instagram. For more information visit
www.CentralArkansasOpen.com.
us for the 2nd Annual WLN Central
It is so encouraging when CBC alumni, and
Calhoun Endowed Scholarship
Established at Central Baptist College
Central Baptist College President
Terry Kimbrow is pleased to announce
the establishment of the Calhoun
Endowed Scholarship. The Calhoun
Endowed Scholarship was established
by Cory and Cari Calhoun and will
give first priority to residents of Benton
County and Saline County. Second
priority will be given to graduates of
the Baptist Preparatory School in Little
Rock. “It is so encouraging when CBC
alumni, and former employees, give
back to the College in such a meaningful
way,” said President Kimbrow. “I am so
thankful to Cory and Cari for sharing
God’s blessings in their lives with CBC.”
Cory and Cari (O’Dell) Calhoun are
both Central Baptist College alumni who
were raised in Bryant (Saline County),
and Cari graduated from Baptist Prep.
Cory received his Associates degree in
General Education and then transferred
to UCA where he received his Bachelor
of Science degree in Economics before
returning to CBC to serve as the Director
of Admissions. Cari received her
Bachelor of Science degree in Christian
Counseling and then went on to UCA
and earned her Master’s degree in
School Psychology.
Cory and Cari currently reside in
Rogers with their children Lincoln and
Emery. Cory is the Senior Manufacturing
Recruiter at Management Recruiters of
Rogers. Cari is a School Psychologist
College.
Central Baptist
College has over
70 endowed
scholarships
representing
over $3.6 million in contributions.
tribute, as contributions are placed in
the permanent endowment and only
a portion of the interest is awarded as
scholarships. Endowed scholarships are
awarded by vote of the CBC Scholarship
Committee, taking into account the
qualifications and eligibility of the
applicants as detailed in the scholarship
agreement.
The Most Misunderstood of Beauty Rituals: Facials
Facials are one of the most misunderstood
truth on the go
Trusting God
with All Your Heart
62 faulkner lifestyle | winter 2021

What does trusting God look like in the midst of your daily life? The simple
answer to the question is found in the concept of confidence. When we are
confident in God and His ability and willingness to care for us, we trust Him.
BY ANDREA LENNON
Our heart is a prized possession.
Sometimes we go to great
lengths to make sure our heart
is not hurt by the people around us or
the circumstances we face. King David
knew what it was like to be mistreated
by others and to face challenging
circumstances. He also knew what it
was like to turn to God and cry out for
help. Psalm 28:6-7 states, “Praise be to
the Lord, for he has heard my cry for
mercy. The Lord is my strength and
my shield; my heart trusts in him, and
he helps me.” (NIV)
Have you ever wondered how you
can trust God with all of your heart?
I mean really trust God! What does
trusting God look like in the midst of
your daily life? The simple answer to
the question is found in the concept
of confidence. When we are confident
in God and His ability and willingness
to care for us, we trust Him. In order
to have confidence in God, we must
recognize and accept God’s character,
ability, strength, and truth.
• The character of God describes
who God is! The Bible teaches
that God is our creator, sustainer,
provider, and protector. Psalm
100:3 speaks of the character of
God. “Know that the Lord is God.
It is he who made us, and we are
his; we are his people the sheep of
his pasture.”
• The ability of God describes
what God can do! God’s power is
limitless. Nothing is too difficult for
Him! When we are facing hardships
it is important to remember the
words recorded in Psalm 68:19.
“Praise be to the Lord, to God
our Savior, who daily bears our
burdens.” Aren’t you glad that God
is willing to daily bear your burden?
This means that whatever hardship
is going on in your life, God wants
to bear it on your behalf.
• The strength of God describes how
God works! “O Lord, you are my
God; I will exalt you and praise
your name, for in perfect faithfulness
you have done marvelous
things, things planned long ago.”
(Isaiah 25:1) How does God work
in our lives? He works in perfect
faithfulness! This means that God
does not make a mistake. He is
never late. He is always right on
time. It is not possible for Him to
forget about us or the situation
we face.
• The truth of God describes God’s
pure intentions towards us! We
must know and believe that God
is with us and that God is for us.
God has no hidden agenda when
it comes to our lives. He loves us
and has a plan for us. “The Lord is
gracious and compassionate, slow
to anger and rich in love. The Lord
is good to all; he has compassion
on all he has made. The Lord is
faithful to all his promises and
loving toward all he has made.”
(Psalm 145:8-9.)
As you think about your heart, think
about your level of trust in God. You
can know that God provides a place
for you to experience unconditional
love and unwavering acceptance especially
during times of trouble. If you
long to trust God more, focus on the
verses listed above. Ask God to show
you His character, ability, strength,
and truth. As you do, you will fuel
an understanding in your heart and
mind allowing you to place your daily
confidence in Him. The result of this
confidence will be tangible in your
life. Instead of pulling back from God,
you will find yourself running to God.
When this occurs, you will experience
the very meaning of trusting God with
all of your heart. Your life will become
a picture of Isaiah 32:17, “The fruit of
righteousness will be peace; the effect
of righteousness will be quietness and
confidence forever.”
