New police, fire chief to lead
Village’s Fourth of July parade
Submitted by the Village
of Northbrook
For the sixth consecutive
year, the Village of
Northbrook and Northbrook
Park District are
working together to coordinate
Fourth of July activities,
and the mile-long
parade is one of the highlights
of the day.
In recognition of the
Village’s two newly promoted
chiefs, Police Chief
Roger Adkins and Fire
Chief Andy Carlson will
be honored as the parade
Grand Marshals. As part
of the honor, police and
fire vehicles will lead off
the parade.
In keeping with tradition,
activities begin at
7:30 a.m. with the 11th
annual Liberty Loop 5K
in Techny Prairie Park and
Fields. People can run or
walk on a scenic, certified
course winding through
the park. Junior joggers
can enjoy a one-mile Liberty
Lap Fun Run that
starts at 8:30 a.m. Registration
is open at nbparks.
org and Park District facilities.
All are invited to enjoy
the traditional breakfast at
Village Green Park, which
runs from 7:30 until 11
a.m., hosted by the Rotary
Club of Northbrook.
The morning activities
also include a family minigolf
tournament at Sportsman’s
Country Club and a
battle on the ball field between
the Northbrook Police
and Fire Departments.
Northbrook Park District
pools are open from 11
a.m. to 7 p.m.
The parade is scheduled
to begin at 2:30 p.m. at
Cherry Lane and Western
Avenue after the bike parade,
which starts rolling
at 2:15 p.m.
The Park District has
lined up more than a dozen
specialty acts and parade
units, including the Chicago
Honey Bear Dancers,
the Jesse White Tumblers,
an award-winning steel
drum band and a giant
bubble-making clown car.
Community groups are
invited to sign up to be in
the parade. Participants are
not required to have floats;
they can walk along the
route or ride in a car.
The Park District is
looking for area businesses
and organizations
to take part in the parade
and become sponsors. The
District offers several levels
of sponsorship opportunities,
with benefits such
as a foursome for golf at
Sportsman’s and sponsor
logos will be featured on
the 4th of July website.
Parade applications are
available online at north
brook4thofjuly.com, along
with guidelines and safety
information. Anyone with
questions about parade
participation can contact
Theresa King at (847) 897-
6119 or tking@nbparks.
org.
One of the largest expenses
on July 4th is the
fireworks. Northbrook
residents can make a donation
($20 minimum) to
support the holiday festivities
and receive a special
vehicle sticker, featuring
the July Fourth logo. The
2018 vehicle sticker must
be displayed by Saturday,
June 30 at midnight.
