Stable, Solid, Sound, and Growing
Wright-Patt Credit Union had another successful year in 2010. We welcomed 27,326 new members to the credit
union, funded more than $616.9 million in new loans, and assets were up by $248.4 million.
Even better, your credit union was able to pay over $4 million in excess earnings back to the membership in a
Special Patronage Dividend! Your credit union continues to be one of the safest and most sound financial institutions
in the Miami Valley. As more members joined the cooperative, we celebrated our 200,000th member milestone and
closed the year with over 202,000 members.
This is a great time to reflect on the story of how Wright-Patt Credit Union came to be in 1932. It was the early ‘30s
and times were hard for everyone, including government workers at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio – the future Wright-
Patterson Air Force Base. Back then, the government paid its workers in cash every two weeks. If you didn’t work, you
didn’t get paid.
One particular worker fell ill and went without pay for several weeks.
His family was hurting. Co-workers decided to chip in twenty-five
cents each to help his suffering family. Recognizing a good idea, these
same workers later committed a quarter each payday to create
a fund for fellow workers who might also one day need help. The
money was kept in the nurse’s office and was called “The Sunshine
Fund.” It was this box of money that evolved to become today’s
Wright-Patt Credit Union.
Our credit union initially had only a handful of members – some say as
few as eleven. We’re up to over 200,000 now, yet our mission remains
the same as in those first days: Wright-Patt Credit Union exists to help
members through life. That’s the beauty of our credit union system.
We are a unique group, banded together to provide affordable
financial services on a not-for-profit basis so that each of us might
have access to financial help when we need it.
But the “why” of what we do is the same now as it was in 1932:
Wright-Patt Credit Union is a service organization dedicated to the
principles of people helping people. No excess profits, no stockholders
and no Wall Street. Just folks on Main Street helping each other make
ends meet.
As always, thank you for being a member. We look forward
to continuing our service to you in the coming year.
