Meanwhile in Europe, the established rose nurseryman,
Gijs de Ruiter of Holland began to be
interested in miniature rose breeding and by 1973
introduced his first effort, ‘Tapis Jaune’. In 1978
he introduced the world class renowned medium
pink variety, ‘Angela Rippon’ followed in 1983
by the mauve ‘Blue Peter’. By 1991 de Ruiter
had successfully introduced miniatures as
house plants to the public in his “Minimo” series.

By the early 1970s miniature roses were becoming
as popular as floribundas and hybrid teas and the
explosion of amateurs taking up the hobby in a
commercial sense had began, particularly in the
United States. This ability to be self sustaining
in your backyard appealed to a large of rose growers
and many took the plunge! For instance,
Lyndon Lyon by 1977 was in full production
mode introducing 9 new cultivars depending on the
offspring of ‘Therese Bugnet’ in his program. In
later years, his reliance on ‘Baby Betsy McCall’
by Dennison became obvious for its genetic inheritance.
