Within a few years they had a stable of winners like the pristine white ‘Fairhope’, the cherry red ‘Chelsea Belle’ named for their dearly departed cocker spaniel, and ‘Fat Tuesday’ to honor Mardi Gras in neighboring New Orleans. Their success had been based upon a hunch that mauve hybrid tea ‘Azure Sea’ would make a great seed parent, and so it did. Later on they used ‘Party Girl’ as seed parent and produced a long line of exquisitely formed miniatures like the white blend ‘Ina’, the orange pink ‘Mobile Jubilee’, the pink blend ‘Silverhill’, and yellow blend ‘Louisiana Lady’. However, ‘Fairhope’ was their very best introduction! Table 22. While all these amateurs were experimenting with miniature roses, professionals like William Warriner of Jackson & Perkins, famous for his wide range of floribundas, was also active in miniature rose breeding. Indeed, not to be surpassed Warriner produced a large range of miniature roses for introduction between 1981 up to his death in 1991. Warriner departed from the choice of well established parents and employed many of his gorgeous floribundas as seed parents. His work was continued by his successors at Jackson & Perkins, John Walden and Dr. Keith Zary. Worthy of note is the success achieved by Walden in creating several prizewinners such as ‘Tropical Twist’ and ‘Lemon Gems’ and Zary with AOE winner ‘Jingle Bells’. Table 23.
