In Cross Hill, South Carolina a mild mannered
gentleman, Michael Williams, started his business
adventure in 1986 with several miniatures derived
from the genetic legacies of Ralph Moore and Harm
Saville. In particular, Michael Williams won coveted
AOE awards with deep pink ‘Debidue’ in 1992 and
the red blend ‘Sweet Caroline’ in 1999. In addition,
he has provided an explosion of color in his latest
creations - ‘Odessa’, ‘Mini Tango’, and ‘Tangerine
Twist’.

With all the flurry of activity in the United States,
Chris Warner of England was determined to contribute
to this explosion of miniature rose breeding by
experimenting with his own brand of hybridizing. He
initially introduced and bred with the red blend
Harkness shrub ‘Marjorie Fair’ crossed with the
Japanese climbing miniature ‘Nozomi’. However
his creation of the medium yellow patio rose ‘Laurie
Ford’ opened the door to an extensive breeding program
to extract many of the desirable traits of this
lovely rose. His major contribution to miniature
rose breeding has been the introduction of the necessary
genes to carry climbing characteristics into the
mainstream of breeding.
