Greater Valley YMCA Easton/Phillipsburg branch to host
20th Annual Firecracker 4-Miler Run/Walk and Kids
Fun Run on Independence Day
The Greater Valley YMCA Easton/Phillipsburg branch, is holding
their 20th Annual Firecracker 4-Mile Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run at
Fairview Park, 3501 Fairview Ave., Easton, PA, on Wednesday, July
4th. The Firecracker 4-Mile Run/Walk is being held in memory of
long-time Y member and running enthusiast, Spencer H. Smith.
In addition to the 4-mile race, festivities will also include a free
Kids Fun Run for children 3 to 7 years of age. The most patriotically
dressed child will be awarded a special prize. The fun run is a great
way to introduce kids to competitive running and Y staff will be on
hand to encourage children along the short course. All children that
register for the fun run before Monday, June 18, will receive a medal
and youth tshirt.
The Firecracker 4-Miler embodies the Y’s cause by being available
for all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Adults, children, and families
are given the ability to raise their spirits and their heartbeats through
this fun and competitive event. Proceeds from this annual fundraiser
will support youth wellness programs at the Greater Valley YMCA
Easton/Phillipsburg branch.
Participants can register at www.active.com or at the branch
located at 1225 W. Lafayette St., Easton, PA, by midnight on Monday,
June 18, to be guaranteed a t-shirt and swag bag.
Blue Valley Farm Show 4-H Scholarship Awards
The 2018-2019 BVFS scholarship winners have been announced.
Each recipient will receive a $1,000.00 scholarship in a ceremony to
be held on August 18, 2018 at the annual Blue Valley Farm Show.
This year’s winners are Marissa DeFranco and Jared Zengulis of
Bangor, Laura Kromer of Easton and Larry Eyre of Northampton.
Marissa will be a Junior at East Stroudsburg University in the fall.
Jared will be attending the American Music and Dramatic Academy
in New York City. Laura will be taking online classes with the
University of Phoenix to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary
Education. Larry will be a Sophomore at Penn State University Main
Campus in the fall where he is majoring in Animal Science.
Any student who is a past or present member of a Northampton
County 4-H Club and will be attending an institute of higher
education may apply for a scholarship. For more information

Thursday, June 21st, 7:00pm - “Annual Preservation Awards”.
Thursday, July 12th, 7:00pm - “Restoration of the Slate Hoists” – Mike Piersa
will conduct an outdoor presentation of the manufacturing and operation of
the restored Flory slate hoists which now reside in Bethel Park.
Thursday, August, 9th, 7:00pm - “One Room Schoolhouses”- Walter Emery
will be showing pictures of all the area old school houses.
Thursday, September 13th, 7:00pm - “Anthracite Coal Trains in the Slate
Belt”- Craig Ealey, train historian, will do a program in honor of the
Anthracite Coal 250th Anniversary.
Thursday, October 11, 7:00pm - “Haunted Heritage Program”.
Thursday, November 8, 7:00pm - “World War I Veterans”- presented by
William Casamassima.
Sunday, December 9, 2:00pm - “The Great Slate Belt Trivia Contest”- MC
Marc Blau hosts the trivia game for teams of four. Make your own team or
just show up and join in the fun. Prizes for the winners.

The Slate Belt Heritage Center is seeking any individuals who would
like to share, in the form of a presentation, any pertinent historical
information about the Slate Belt. This could be in the form of a power
