Charlaine Harris An American New York Times bestselling author who has been writing mysteries for thirty years. Though her early work consisted largely of poems about ghosts and, later, teenage angst, she began writing plays when she attended Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. She began to write books a few years later. She is best known for The Southern Vampire Mysteries series, which HBO later adapted for its dramatic series entitled True Blood. write the book . . . it went on and on. It was devastating. I had to rebuild my confidence and my willingness to expose my work to the public. It took a while. Q3. The Southern Vampire Mysteries/ True Blood are known as you most notable works. Is there another series or book of yours you think deserved the same attention? Sure, all of them! I worked hard on everything I've written, and I'm proud of my whole body of work. Q4. What kind of planning goes into writing a series, especially a long one like the Sookie Stackhouse Series? And how do you keep the readers entertained and coming back for more? In my case, very little planning. I strictly write by the seat of my pants. As long as I stick to the rules of my world, I'm okay. I had an overall plan for the Sookie books, but within those there was infinite room for improvisation, which is my favorite thing. I have always thought as long as I'm entertained, my readers will be too. So far, so good. Q5. How did the changing reader trends influence your writing over the years? Not at all. I always wrote the best book I could and hoped it would find its audience. Q1. What drives your writing? I want to tell stories, and I want people to read them. That's a large part of what writing is about. I have an agenda, but my main purpose is to entertain, to provide people with little vacations. Q2. Did you ever face a writing slump in your career of three decades? How did you overcome it? My worst slump came after the intense reader backlash I experienced at the end of the Sookie Stackhouse series. I got a lot of hate mail. Those readers were few in number, but vicious and ruthless in voice, and many of them hadn't even read the book. They were going to burn DEAD EVER AFTER, they threatened my life and cursed my children (!), they said I didn't even Q6. Characters can bring a story to life. What writing tips would you offer to novice writers in creating a character that readers will enjoy? That's hard to answer, but it's my favorite question. People are complex, and trying to render them faithfully on the page is matter of understanding them on a deep level. I don't believe you need to write a detailed biography of each character, but you need to understand what the consequences of the character's age, education, social and spiritual background, and ethnicity, will mean to the character's reactions. Every person comes from somewhere; if you understand that, you understand the person, to a great extent. 31
