THE ST Andrew’s College
preparatory first XI hockey
team had the chance to learn
some tips and tricks from
former Black Sticks star Gemma
McCaw.
McCaw played 246 games for
New Zealand scoring 71 goals
since 2008.
Page 5 Page 7
McCaw inspires St Andrew’s first XI
The 28-year-old spoke to
the students for 30min
about perseverance and
success and answered any
questions.
She also ran a coaching
and skills session on the school
turf.
The opportunity came about
when a parent won an auction
for McCaw’s time at the Chalky
Carr Trust fundraising dinner,
of which McCaw is the patron.
She spoke to the team about
the importance of looking
within yourself, giving 100 per
cent and never giving up on
your dreams.
She stressed the importance
of staying focused on school
work as well as the need for a
career after sport.
The team will be travelling to
the AIMS Games in Tauranga
in September.
They hope to place in the top
five at that event.
The team currently play in
division two in the Canterbury
Hockey Kwik Sticks 11-aside
competition.
They currently sit at the top of
the table.
Blenheim
Road
overbridge
site still
a disgrace
– residents
group
• By Julia Evans
THE SITE of the former Blenheim
Rd overbridge is being investigated
as a health and safety risk.
The investigation was prompted
as the Deans Avenue Precinct Society
wrote to the Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
pleading for the “disgraceful” state
of the site to be addressed.
City council head of regulatory
compliance Tracey Weston has
received the letter and is investigating
the site.
“Until that investigation has
concluded, we cannot comment
further.”
Deans Avenue Precinct Society
chairwoman Claire Mulcock said:
“The area where the overbridge existed
has developed into a disgraceful
mass of trees, rubbish, vermin
and in a large corner of the site
squatters and people living rough
are residing there.”
She said the area provides a
“threat” to security, as well as
health and safety.
That could be said for just about everything
in life, and for St Andrew’s College
hockey players it couldn’t have probably
come from someone more inspirational
than Gemma McCaw (see page 1).
The former Black Sticks international took a coaching session
at the school which included talking about perseverance and
success. The opportunity to get McCaw to St Andrew’s came
Quarry, properties space bid
• By Emily O’Connell and Anan
Zaki
ANTI-TEMPLETON quarry
campaigner Simon Moore has
thrown his support behind
having a set distance between
quarries and properties.
The Selwyn District Plan
Committee has decided to
include setbacks in the district
plan but it will not specify how
far away a quarry must be from
a property.
“That’s exactly what we want.
The only problem is the district
plan can take long to happen.
“At the moment, it’s a joke,
if we got 500m it would be a
start,” he said.
Mr Moore (right) said he
preferred a 1km setback but
“anything was better than nothing”.
“I just don’t think for example,
the people moving to
Rolleston, West Melton and
Lincoln realise that under the
current rules a quarry could be
plonked next to one of the new
subdivisions.”
However, district councillor
Craig Watson believes a setback
distances should have been
included.
Cr Watson said there should
be a 500m setback from “points
of interest” such as houses, and
a 250m setback from properties.
“For me, this is an opportunity
for us to be stronger as a
council and say ‘look we understand
the significance of quarrying
and it’s important but also
understand it’s really hard if
you’re close so here’s one way to
make this work and that’s having
setbacks,’ “ he said.
Cr Watson said his numbers
came from decisions made by
other councils.
Meanwhile, Selwyn MP Amy
Adams has found a way for
Templeton residents opposed
to the proposed Fulton Hogan
quarry to get potential information
at no cost.
Residents opposing the
quarry were told by Environment
Canterbury in March that
it would cost $2356 to process
their Official Information Request.
However, Ms Adams said
on Wednesday that she would
use her powers as an MP to help
residents avoid fees.
“Generally MP’s are not
charged, so I have offered
residents who are told they will
face a substantial charge ... to
have me seek the information
on their behalf to see if we can
avoid extra cost in this way,” she
said.
Ms Adams said fees were
a barrier for people seeking
official information.
Templeton Residents
Association chairman Garry
Kilday welcomed Ms Adams
offer.
He met with ECan officials
last Monday about OIA fees and
hoped ECan would not charge
for future requests, following
the meeting.
“Both Selwyn District
Council and Christchurch City
have said the information we
request is free, so it looks like is
coming to the party as well.
“They said we have to shorten
our time periods down for OIA
requests. If we do it one year at
a time, they said we will get the
information,” Mr Kilday said.
But if there was a fee involved,
residents would take up Ms
Adams offer, he said.
DENTON PARK MEETING
The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board has proposed
an extraordinary board meeting to
consider a hearings panel recommendation
on the proposed Denton
Park reclassification. The hearings
panel last month recommended
against transforming the park into
a multi-million dollar community
hub. The meeting is anticipated
to be held on July 6 at Te Hāpua:
Halswell Centre. The date will be
confirmed by the community board
today. The venue was selected due to
potentially high attendance.
SKATE PARK DELAYED
Completion of the Knights Stream
skate park has been delayed to mid-
August due to rain last month. The
city council said the wet weather
was not ideal for concrete pouring.
When construction started in April,
it was expected to finish by the end
of July.
SPEED LIMIT CHANGES
Lower speeds have been proposed
on the Yaldhurst section of Buchanans
Rd. City council staff have
recommended the speed limit on
the road between Gilberthorpes Rd
and FW Delamain be reduced from
70 km/h to 50 km/h. A decision
on the changes will be made today
by the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board.
A love affair with bonsai earns recognition
• By Anan Zaki
“STATIONARY PETS” is how
Beverley Van describes her
beloved bonsai trees.
Mrs Van, 83, has been fascinated
with bonsai trees for more
than half a century. Throughout
that time, she has always maintained
it as a hobby, while she
worked as an office administrator.
She recently received a Queen’s
Service Medal for her services to
bonsai in the Queen’s Birthday
Honours.
“A letter came a few weeks ago
and I opened it and thought perhaps
they got the wrong address,
it was most unexpected.
“It was a lovely moment, I am
very thankful,” Mrs Van said.
An Ilam resident of 30 years,
she confessed her early days of
growing bonsai were far from
perfect.
“I killed a lot of trees along the
way, but I got there in the end,”
Mrs Van said. Now, she has more
than 40 bonsai trees.
She got her first taste of bonsai
while on a Scouts trip in 1965.
“We had a leaders meeting one
DEVOTED: Beverley Van, QSM, with one of her pinus radiata trees.
night and we had a guest speaker,
Peter McLay, who had been
growing bonsai for many years.
He showed us what to do and I
thought I could do that,” Mrs
Van said.
She founded the Avon Bonsai
Society in Bishopdale with her
late husband Alan Van in 1993.
Aside from bonsai, she also has
a love for pottery.
“My husband and I decided
to join the pottery group [Canterbury
Potters Association] on
Memorial Ave [in 1992].
Volunteers honoured
at awards ceremony
THOUSANDS OF hours of
work given to the community
has been recognised at the 2018
Volunteer Recognition Awards.
The ceremony was held at the
civic offices yesterday.
Halswell’s Jennifer Buchanan
was awarded for her work at
GirlGuiding New Zealand.
She has been a leader at First
Halswell Brownies for seven
years and each week caters for
30 girls aged seven to nine years
from all over Christchurch.
GirlGuiding New Zealand
said she gave a “110 per cent” to
her work, while making each
week fun and engaging and
encouraging girls to use their
imagination.
“Jeni is a great role model for
the girls and a valuable advocate
for the organisation.”
Riccarton-based Oak Development
Trust’s Lois Reid was
also recognised for her volunteering
contributions.
She has been involved with
the Oak Development Trust
since 2006, attending to nail
care for the elderly and those
with disabilities at the six
weekly Nail Care Clinic and
also at the weekly Mainly Music/Playgroup
held at Riccarton
Baptist Church.
“Lois is pleasant, caring and
respectful in all her exchanges,”
the trust said.
She went to great lengths to
engage with each person she
met, it said.
Yaldhurst’s Petersgate Counselling
Centre’s Elizabeth Cant
was awarded for her 3600 hours
of volunteer work to the centre.
The centre said she provided
“invaluable support” during
office hours.
“Elizabeth has ensured clients
would not feel alone during a
time of year when people can
feel particularly vulnerable.
“Elizabeth has also
encouraged and trained many
other Petersgate volunteers,
passing on her knowledge
and experience with a big
heart and wonderful sense of
humour.”
“When [the pottery group] had
a sale, we had bonsai trees on a
sales table along with the pots we
made. Many people seemed to be
interested and we were asked to
run classes,” Mrs Van said.
The club never looked back
since and she taught “hundreds”
of people over the years, she said.
Her husband was her biggest
supporter until he passed away
nine years ago.
“He used to do [bonsai], he said
‘well if I can’t beat her I will have
to join her.”
Bonsai had become increasingly
popular in recent years,
Mrs Van said.
“A lot of people are interested
because it’s something you can
grow without having a great big
garden. If you live in a flat, you
can take your trees with you
when you move.”
She encouraged more people to
get into bonsai in their pastime
and welcomed new members to
the club, which met every month.
“It’s a very nice hobby and
anybody can do it, we get people
from all walks of life, all ages
from teenagers up to my age,” she
said.
Overbridge
still a
disgrace
•From page 1
“The trees are completely
overgrown, the area is a dumping
ground for domestic rubbish such
as mattresses, rubbish bags and
other disposables.”
Ms Mulcock said Deans Ave
residents feel unsafe walking across
the section, especially in the early
morning and evening in darkness.
Ms Mulcock said: “In view of the
justified icon in which Hagley Park
is held, this area is a blight on our
landscape, is a blight on our city
and is a blight on the surrounds of
probably one of the best facilities
that exist in terms of open air space
sport and recreation in our city.”
‘Grass games’ created at Hornby High
SCHOOLS
HORNBY HIGH School
students have volunteered with
the Gap Filler project, creating
a series of “grass games” for
families to enjoy over the winter
months.
As part of the games, the
students developed two mini
five-a-side football fields, a maze
and an up-scaled version of a
The students were part of the
secondary tertiary alignment
resource programme, which
helps them to choose a career
pathway.
Each year, students
participating in the STAR
programme choose a project
that they will undertake for the
community as part of learning
how to be good community
citizens. This year they decided
to volunteer to work on a project
with Gap Filler.
Working with Gap Filler staff,
the student leaders came up
with concepts at a workshop
during the school holidays.
These concepts formed the basis
of what they created during
their recent volunteer day.
RICCARTON HIGH student Adia
McKay, 14, has been awarded the
Ngai Tahu scholarship Te Pokai Ao
(Travel the World).
The year 9 student will travel to
Hawaii during the October school
holidays for a “cultural experience”
involving a science, technology, engineering
and maths programme.
She will then return to New
Zealand for a noho marae at one of
the papatipu marae in the greater
Ōtautahi region.
The focus of the programme will
be to establish place-based connection,
understanding and context of
papatipu marae, their community
and environment.
As part of the programme, participants
will visit and engage in
organised activities at Canterbury
University, as well as local areas of
cultural significance.
Adia’s success was based on a
comprehensive application, outlining
science, mathematics and technology
skills, and demonstrating
a passion for kapa haka and Māori
culture. She also had to create a
30sec video, outlining a problem to
solve and why it is important to the
applicant and their marae.
More than 120 students participated in the
Riccarton High welcomed over 200 students last
month to experience a day at their local high
school. Student leaders and teachers welcomed
year 8 students from their school zone partners
to experience and engage in activities they will
be participating in next year.
The visiting students experienced a flavour of
science, social studies, English, maths, arts,
sport, and of course socialisation which provide
outlines, daily activities, fun and engagement.
The day event provides a transitional pathway
opportunity for future students to witness
first-hand what’s coming next in their academic
experience and address any potential concerns.
At the beginning of 2017, student Thomas Chin
was selected as an Ambassador for the Halberg
Foundation and one of 10 members of the
foundation’s Youth Council.
Twice a year the committee members, who
are all physically disabled, meet at head office
in Auckland to discuss and create initiatives
and programmes for physically disabled
young people, acting as the youth voice for the
Halberg Foundation.
Thomas was invited to take part in the 2018
Halberg Awards event in February, escorting the
previous Supreme Halberg Award winner Lisa
Carrington to the stage to hand over her trophy.
He says while he meets a lot of people through
his involvement with the foundation, and that’s
cool, the most rewarding aspect is “meeting
with a bunch of physically disabled kids and
connecting with them on a personal level”.
Chatting to them,
surprised and honoured by the Woolf Fisher
to send leading educators overseas to examine
The fellowship was established to reward
educational excellence in teaching and was a
TOP TALENT: Halswell basketball referee Brad Clive hopes his can make the Australian NBL
one day.
A wonder with the whistle
• By Jacob Page
HALSWELL basketball referee
Brad Clive is fast forging a career
with the whistle.
The 17-year-old St Thomas’
student has just returned
from refereeing the women’s
under-19 national final, and is
the youngest referee on the panel
for the New Zealand women’s
basketball championship.
Brad first took up the whistle at
age 11 at Pioneer Stadium.
Since then he has officiated the
national finals of all age-groups
from under-15 through to under-
23s.
“I was an average basketballer
and I still play socially, but I
wanted to find another way to
stay in the game,” he said.
“So in 2011, I refereed my first
year 5 and 6 game at Pioneer
Stadium and I’ve loved it ever
since.
“I think (referee manager Carol
SPORTS
Bathurst) was nervous at putting
me in there because of my age
but it went well.”
Brad said he loved the role and
enjoyed the interpersonal skills
he had learnt.
“Going away to tournaments
and hanging out with other
referees was something that I’ve
always enjoyed,” he said.
“Basketball is one of those
sports where you are always
talking to coaches or players
during the game and that helps
me be accountable for the calls I
make.”
Brad said as he moved up the
ranks and the age groups, he
understood player respect would
have to be earned, especially with
his youthful appearance.
“It comes in time, people think
they’re in the right, but I always
want to be able to justify my
calls if they ask me about it,” he
said.
“It’s important to have a good
feel for the game and understand
what players are trying to achieve
in each play.
Brad said he would like to
officiate in the Australian
National Basketball League in
the near future.
“You always look up to peers
and for me that’s guys like
Matt Bathurst who has been
NBL referee of the year the past
two years and he’s been super
valuable to me.
“There’s also guys like Marty
Davison who have helped me a
lot.”
Brad said he’d like to juggle his
studies and his flourishing career
next year.
HALSWELL’S Willy Silcock
will be part of the New Zealand
team heading to the beach
handball world championships
in Russia next month.
The 27-year-old is one of two
Cantabrians in the squad which
will compete in the top flight
tournament for the first time.
Spreydon’s Peter Ellis will
also be part of the squad after
they received the lone wildcard
spot in the 32-team tournament
which will be played from July
24-29.
It will be the first time New
Zealand has been at a major
international beach handball
event and while they have no
expectations, they aren’t going
over there to be easy-beats.
“We aren’t sure what to expect,
but that goes for our opposition
as well,” Silcock said.
New Zealand will be in a
pool with Spain, Hungary and
Vietnam.
Spain is seeded fourth, Hungary
sixth and Vietnam 10th.
Silcock said two victories
could see them really push for
a play-off spot and he thought
Vietnam and Hungary were
two games worth targeting.
Silcock and Ellis train together
three times a week, but with
the other eight national team
members based in the North
Island, time as a squad is rare.
Silcock said he fell in love
with the game while at St Bede’s
College.
“For me, I loved the athleticim
required and the
explosiveness of the movement.
It has very similar rules to
water polo and New Zealand is
Sports and Technology Update
Sports
Sport is an important part of our school life
and students are given many opportunities to
participate in the large variety of sports we offer.
Mastering the ability to work as a team and
learning to be a good sport is a significant part
of being a Kirkwood student.
This term, our pupils have been involved with the
Cross Country, Intermediate School’s Duathlon
and have enjoyed the start of our winter sports
programme which includes: Netball, Football,
Rugby, Hockey and Table Tennis. As well as
these, we will participate in Athletics, Swimming,
Basketball, Korfball, Rhythmic and Artistic
Physical Sense Supports
Senior Well-being
SPECIAL SUPER GOLD CARD OFFER
tEN yEars ago, the Physical sense
Gym and Physio in sydenham, created
a program to help stroke survivors.
Their specialised exercise program was
established to work in collaboration with
the Burwood stroke rehabilitation team.
Participants raved so much about the
classes and the benefits they experienced
from this exercise program that it has
now grown from one weekly class to four
weekly classes. New classes have also been
added to be effective for those who have
suffered from Osteoporosis, Intermittent
Claudication, and Diabetes. On top of
that they also run four weekly classes
for seniors. These weekly rehabilitation
and injury prevention classes can lead to
continued gym membership at a reduced
cost. Participants may also be eligible for
a WINZ subsidy to pay for the continued
gym membership with their super
Gold card.
Physical sense’s latest initiative is the
“Centre for senior Wellbeing”. Here you
can get all the information needed to make
sure that you (or your parents) can keep
on living independently. It is a “walkin”
information centre where the staff
are happy to connect you to the services
you need to; -prevent falling, -make
adjustments to home and surroundings,
-reduce pain, -stay mobile, -care for your
feet.
Join one of the classes and increase your
strength and mobility or just come in to
find out more about what assistance is
available for you.
One class participant Margie said. “I
can’t say enough about them. I think
they are absolutely marvelous, very
patient, great sense of humour, very
supportive”. Not only are you supported
by the knowledgeable, well trained
staff, but you will make new friends
and enjoy participants with a positive,
“can-do” attitude. These classmates are
there for themselves but also to support
members in their class to be able to have
FOCUS ON HEALTH
Supporting Your
Bowel & Digestive
Function Helps
Prevent Disease
It is most important to keep the whole
digestive & elimination systems of the
body working efficiently. Otherwise toxins
that have not been eliminated set the stage
for disease. Many diseases have been linked
with micro-organisms (virus) or a bacterial
component. Generally these microorganisms
or bacteria can only survive
due to the fact that the environment they
are in is suitable for their survival. Non
eliminated toxins are probably one of the
main causative factors for their survival.
We know that when the digestive system
& bowel function are poor we have many
more health problems. These include
arthritis, digestive problems like reflux &
stomach pain, bladder infections, chronic
skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis &
rashes, poor eyesight, pain & inflammation,
tumors & a weakened immune system just
to name a few.
Nature’s Sunshine LBS II contains a
highly effective blend of natural herbs to
support the whole digestive system & it is
especially effective at cleansing the lower
bowel & intestinal tract. It is commonly
used for arthritis, constipation, diarrhea,
digestive problems, dry stool, fever, colds &
influenza, flatulence, gallstones, gout, skin
conditions like eczema & psoriasis, urinary
infections, liver dysfunction, Candida,
weakened immune function & for people
who want to keep their health as good as
possible.
The herbs in LBS II help stimulate the
production of digestive fluids & bile for
efficient digestion. This alone may help
prevent many diseases as a properly working
digestive system will itself neutralise many
disease causing organisms before they
have a chance to cause any problems. LBS
II also stimulates peristaltic action of the
colon effectively cleansing the colon of any
accumulated build-ups of waste material. It
also relaxes abdominal cramping & spasms,
enhances liver function, purifies the blood,
neutralizes acidic conditions, helps destroy
intestinal parasites & worms, & fights
infection.
Keeping your digestive system & bowels
functioning efficiently is definitely &
important step in obtaining & maintaining
good long term health.
1 in 2 people
deficient in B12
Emerging research has shown as many as 50% of older adults
& as many as 25% of younger adults are deficient in vitamin B12.
Scientists at Rush University Medical Center found those most
deficient in vitamin B12 to have the smallest brain mass & the lowest
scores on tests measuring short-term memory, concentration &
brain performance. Another study showed that older people with
higher levels of B12 in their blood have bigger, healthier brains &
score higher on cognitive tests than those with lower levels. Yet
another recent landmark study showed that B12 supplementation
slows the accelerated rate of brain shrinkage & declining cognitive
function. B12 is essential for energy production, cell health,
regulation of mood & sleep cycles, nerve health & repair, &
prevention of homocysteine a serious cardiovascular risk factor
that is known to cause damage & plaque in the blood vessels. It can
also increase the chances of a stroke. Harvard researchers found a
34% decrease risk of vision loss in a study of participants aged 40+
who supplemented with B12. Another study linked a higher risk
of hearing loss in subjects in their 60’s who were low in B12.
The reason so many people lack B12 appears to be our body’s
ability to absorb it declining with age as the digestive system
becomes less efficient. Anti-reflux medication & other drugs
further reduce B12 absorption. The good news is B12 in
the form of Methylcobalamin
sublingual tablets that are
dissolved in the
mouth & thru
bypassing the
digestive tract have
been shown to
effectively raise B12
levels in the body.
HOME & HEATING
WESTERN NEWS
Fresh air
in your home
Get the right
choice for winter
All houses require air exchange in order
to stay fresh and dry. No one likes to live
in a stuffy, smelly, damp home. Indoor air
quality is important for the health of the
occupants. Houses can have many sources of
contaminants, such as bathrooms, kitchens,
pets, smokers, and even furnishings. Opening
the windows can refresh the air, but is not
always an option for security reasons and can
also lead to heat energy being lost to outside.
Although older houses have small gaps
around windows and doors, you want to be
able to control the flow of air. You don’t want
air coming in to the bathroom or kitchen and
pushing the soiled air around the house. It
is better to expel the air out of kitchens and
bathrooms to outside. This will draw air in
from the rest of the house to replace the air that
has been removed.
Modern houses are very airtight and
theoretically require a source of incoming air
to allow kitchen and bathroom extraction to
work optimally. Ventilation systems should be
low air velocity and low air pressure so as not
to cause draughts.
There are two main types of ventilation
system: Positive pressure and Balanced
pressure. Positive pressure systems, such as the
Dry-Matic, bring filtered, warmed attic air into
the house, which then percolates through the
rooms, pushing the damper stale air out.
Balanced pressure systems bring in a
similar amount of air to the amount they
exhaust. Balanced pressure systems with Heat
Exchange, such as the HEX390, use the heat
of the outgoing air to warm the incoming
air from outside. These are the most energy
efficient systems available, as they recover up
to 80% of the energy in the air, rather than
losing it to outside. Heat exchangers work just
as well cooling incoming air when the house is
cooled in summer.
The NZ building code has recommended
air exchange rates for houses. To ascertain
the required airflow for your home, please
contact Smooth-Air on 0800 SMOOTH
(0800 766 684), who will also be able to
recommend a solution if your ventilation
doesn’t yet meet the New Zealand standard.
Every year around about
now people start to plan
ahead for their winter
heating needs. High on
most people’s ‘must have’
list is a Heat Pump. They
have naturally become
extremely popular because
of their cheap heat and
“touch of a button”
convenience.
Heat pumps are
however a significant,
long term investment, so
it’s important to make the
right choice.
New Zealand properties tend to be of
unique design and have many features that
greatly affect their heating requirements.
Factors such as location, orientation to
the sun, room volume, heat loss surface
area, and room air flow characteristics, etc.
all play a major role. This means that the
heat pump that is right for your friend or
neighbour is not necessarily right for you.
Add to that the fact that all manufacturers
claim to have the best, quietest, most energy
efficient, and have a multitude of constantly
updating models; finding out which heat
pump is best is not so straightforward.
Getting the right heat pump for your
home is a combination of accurate
calculation of the space to be heated, taking
into account all property characteristic,
plus an up to date knowledge of the
performance specifications of all makes
and models available.
This is where the local company Heat
Pump Guys can help. They are fully
independent heat pump specialists, and are
accredited agents for all top brands. They
offer an obligation-free home survey and
completely unbiased advice on which heat
HOME & HEATING
Choosing the right heat
pump for your home
Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit,
most homes include at least one heat pump,
if not a whole heating solution. They can
provide cheap, clean heat and are much
more convenient than a log burner as you
just need to press a button. But how do you
decide what is best? Choosing the right
sized heat pump is key to ensuring optimum
comfort levels. Every situation varies and
it is therefore important to get professional
advice from heat pump experts.
The range varies from wall mounted high
walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems,
ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted
central heating systems allowing you to have
a very discreet way of heating your whole
home to a constant temperature
throughout.
Firstly, you must select a heat
pump that is suitable for the size
of the space you wish to heat.
Usually a site visit is the best
way to ascertain this. Not only
is the size of the area taken into
consideration but also, insulation,
building orientation, windows
and ceiling space. There are a wide
range of heat pumps available
with different heating outputs
so it is important to select the
correct size for your requirements
that will handle the job but not be
unnecessarily overpowered.
Secondly, the location of your heat
pump is also extremely important. The
cheapest installation is a back to back where
the outdoor unit is positioned directly
behind the indoor unit however this is
not necessarily always the best option. It is
vital that the indoor unit is positioned in a
place that will not be constantly blowing on
you. Also important, is the location of the
outdoor unit. Most people do not want their
outdoor unit sitting directly in their outdoor
entertaining area or right outside their
bedroom window.
Choose a brand you can trust. Many
brands have come and gone over the years
but there are a number of manufacturers
who provide reputable and reliable products.
All brands vary in their energy efficiency,
quietness of systems and price, so it depends
on your application as to which will be most
suitable. Major brands such as Panasonic,
Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Toshiba and
Hitachi are all reliable brands backed up by
good technical after sales service.
Ensure your heat pump is installed by an
accredited installer. This will not only ensure
correct installation of your heat pump, but
also validate the manufacturers warranty.
Other things to consider when choosing
a heat pump are time clocks, ease of use of
the remote controllers, air filtration and also
wifi capabilities.
Heating is a major investment
in your home and it is vital to get
the right advice.
he first time I woke up with a cold nose in my brand
new home, I was shocked. How could this be? The
cool, calm, collected one and I had planned for our
home to be well insulated against Canterbury’s
cold winters. Turns out, not well enough. We’d
even assured a well-meaning friend we had ample
insulation (yes, Duncan, you were right). I’ve worked out where we
fell short in hindsight. Our home was designed by highly respected
Christchurch architect the late Peter Beaven, for a magic little
Port Hills site, where he planned to live in with his wife Lesley.
Sadly Peter died before realising his plans. We bought them and
employed Archology in Sydney, where we were living at the time, to
prepare the construction drawings and specifications. Compared to
Australia, the R values for insulation would have looked high. Our
talented young builder, Sam McCarthy, would never have queried
the levels because they were standard practice around town. So it
wasn’t until we were living in the house and I consulted Council’s
eco design advisor Julie Villard about how we could warm it up that
we discovered, while we unwittingly thought we had exceeded New
Zealand standard, we had merely met Code. And that ain’t going to
cut it in our climate.
Fortunately Julie had plenty of ideas on how we could improve
the situation and we have easy access to our underfloor to top-up
the insulation. Julie Villard, an architect from France, is on a mission
to transform building best practice here and you can read about the
groundbreaking ideas she’s applied to her own brand new build on
page 20.
I’ve shared the highs and lows of building with the other home
builders and renovators I interviewed and, like Diane (page 36), would
relish doing it again. I was struck by how all the home owners said
what they most valued was the ability of their designer or builder to
“really listen” to their wants and needs. I was also impressed by how
much Christchurch people love a good garage! We’ve got some ideas
for some top of their class cars to complement yours on page 81 and
how to quickly establish a lawn on page 72.
We review all the latest trends in everyone’s favourite room –
the kitchen (page 48), and share an easy yet impressive recipe for
entertaining friends in your fabulous new home on page 77.
I hope Peter Beaven would be pleased with how the cool, calm,
collected one and I realised his dream. Go chase yours people!
Speaking to the NZ Institute of Architects about ‘bespoke
architecture’ being a ‘minority pursuit’ not long before his death
Peter said “I am going to try to prove that it’s possible to build
modestly and cheaply with a little house for ourselves. It’s going to
be sustainable and it’s going to be beautiful and it’s going to be just
cheap – no more than an ordinary spec house. I’ll prove that it can
be done, and it might be the last thing I prove.”
