Expressing yourself
Sometimes when you are in a small group or even with friends or family, you may
find you have a hard time expressing yourself. It’s because of your insecurities
that you hold back.
Basically, everyone’s afraid of getting made fun of or being put down. People
don’t handle rejection very well so they try to avoid rejection and acceptance.
This is not the way that you want to go about your life. You’re stronger and
better than to limit yourself and your self-expression.
People find change throughout their life. Don’t resist it. If you take the time to get
to know your new co-workers, for instance, you will find that they’re worried
about the same things that you are.
One way to feel comfortable about expressing your views is to learn about the
points that others make and why you feel the way you do. You can talk to others
at work because you have a common bond with each other. You know how to do
the job so you can be proud and confident enough to tell others your point of
view and share your thoughts.
This is great when you go to college to master something. With education comes
security. If you can express your educationed views, you may find that the small
group may use your suggestion or they may build on it, but it is still part of the
solution. Even if it doesn’t seem like they like your suggestion, you have just
inspired them to come up with something big and new. You’re still part of the
final solution. You’ve made a contribution.
When it comes to work, you can grow in comfort around your co-workers due to
the fact that you have spent a lot of time with them. You have gotten to know
them and know their opinions. If you think that you are going to clash with your
co-workers, all you need to do is state “this is just my opinion” and then express
yourself. That way the group doesn’t feel like you’re being overbearing. When you
are sensitive to the needs of the group, the group will be more likely to hear you
out.
