Welcome
Experience
LIFE IS AN EXPERIENCE
Auf der Suche nach dem Zeitgeist in
unserer urbanen Gesellschaft entsteht
aus dem Kondensat der Wünsche,
Sehnsüchte und Möglichkeiten
schnell eine Essenz, die sich am besten
mit „Experience“ beschreiben lässt.
Längst sind wir alle Teil der Experience
Economy, denn fast 80 % der Millenials
geben heute lieber Geld für ein
Erlebnis als für ein Produkt aus. Erlebnisse
werden als sinnstiftend und Status
bildend verstanden. Der Zugang
zu Erlebnissen gilt heute mehr als der
materielle Besitz. Dabei verbindet uns
ein gemeinsamer Anspruch: Aus unserer
begrenzt verfügbaren freien Zeit
wollen wir eine maximal lebensbereichernde
Erfahrung machen. Orte, die
eine „memorable Experience“ abbilden,
an denen sich Erlebnisse quantitativ
und qualitativ materialisieren,
sind die wahren Destinationen unserer
Zeit. In der dan pearlman Group
blicken wir auf 20 Jahre erfolgreiche
Destinationsentwicklung zurück. Wir
wissen, dass sich ein Ringen für perfekte
Erlebnis-Destinationen lohnt, da
diese für die Menschen einen Wert haben,
weil sie für etwas Wundervolles
stehen wollen: echte Erlebnisse, reale
Erfahrungen, wertvolle Erinnerungen.
dan pearlman Group
In the quest to define the zeitgeist
of our urban society, a concentrated
mix of desires, yearnings and possibilities
quickly boils down to an essence
that can best be described as
“experience.” We’re part of the experience
economy now, and have been
for a long time: Nearly 80 percent of
millennials would rather spend money
on an experience than on a product.
Experiences are seen as a source
of meaning and status. Today, access
to experiences matters more than material
possessions do. And each of us
faces the same demand: We all want
to turn the limited leisure time available
to us into the most life-enhancing
experience possible. Places that
present a “memorable experience,”
where experiences become a quantitative
and qualitative reality, we call
destinations. At dan pearlman Group,
we’ve been successfully profiling destinations
for 20 years now. We know
that the struggle to achieve the perfect
leisure destination experience is
worthwhile. It has value for people because
it stands for something wonderful:
authentic experiences, real adventures,
priceless memories.
With warmest regards,
HAPPY PLACES
DAN PEARLMAN GROUP — THE DESTINATION EXPERIENCE
Happy
Places
Was macht einen Ort zu einem „Happy
Place“? Und wie geht erfolgreiches
„Destination Profiling“? Am Anfang
einer jeden Destinationsentwicklung
steht die Entwicklung einer übergeordnete
Strategie. Entlang eines gewählten
Themas lässt sich dann eine
Geschichte erzählen, sogenanntes
Storytelling, die den Besucher auf
eine Reise durch die Destination mitnimmt.
Der choreografierte Weg des
Besuchers durch die Destination wird
auch als Customer Journey beschrieben.
Gelingt es dabei, den Besucher
erfolgreich in die Geschichte einzubinden
und er wird zum Teil der Story,
spricht man von Immersion. Dabei
gilt: Je intensiver die Immersion ausfällt,
umso intensiver ist auch das Erlebnis
und der Escapismus-Effekt. Wer
jetzt annimmt, dass eine erfolgreiche
Customer Experience einem durchgängigen
Adrenalinrausch gleicht,
irrt. Um den Besucher nicht zu überfordern,
braucht es ein wohl dosiertes
Yin und Yang aus Momenten der
Spannung und solchen der Entspannung.
Dies erfordert einen feinfühlig
kuratierten Mix aus Entertainment und
Edutainment, Dekompressions- und
Ruhezonen, Zeit für Aktivität und Zeit
zum bloßen Verweilen. Überhaupt ist
es ein non plus ultra, die Verweildauer
innerhalb einer Destination zu erhöhen
und quantitativ als auch qualitativ zu
optimieren. Dazu tragen gastronomische
Angebote, Events, Service-Features,
Retail, Interaktionen und sogar
Landmarks, Supersigns und Fotopunkte
bei. Nicht zuletzt bestimmt das wohl
kuratierte, ästhetisch ansprechende
Produkt- oder Serviceportfolio und
die Gestaltung der Destination über
die Qualität, über den generierten Umsatz
und schließlich den Erfolg. Ob
eine Destinationsentwicklung gelungen
ist, lässt sich heute dabei leicht
feststellen, denn von einer „grammable
Experience“ werden gerne Fotos
und Selfies bei Instagram und in den
Sozialen Medien gepostet. Auch daran
zeigt sich, dass keine Destination
heute die Verknüpfung mit der digitalen
Welt verpassen darf, denn nur wer
das reale Erlebnis online vorbereitet
und später online verlängert, sorgt einerseits
für willkommene Wiederholungstäter
bei den Besuchern und verhindert
andererseits Diskrepanzen in
der Wahrnehmung beim Konsumenten,
die zum Abbruch des Abenteuers
führen können. Kurz: Destination
Profiling macht aus Orten Destinationen
und "Happy Places".
What constitutes a „Happy Place“?
And what does successful “destination
profiling” look like? The first step
in building a destination is to develop
a comprehensive strategy. You can
then start telling a story, based on your
chosen theme, that will carry visitors
along on a trip to and through the destination.
These choreographed travels
are sometimes called the “customer
journey.” And when you successfully
integrate your visitors into the story
and make them part of it, that’s called
“immersion.” As a rule, a more intense
immersion makes for a more intense
experience and a greater escapism effect.
But if you’re thinking that a never-ending
adrenaline rush equals a successful
customer experience, you’re
wrong. To keep your visitors from getting
overwhelmed, you need the right
balance of yin and yang, moments of
tension and moments of release. That
calls for a sensitively curated mix of
entertainment and edutainment, quiet
zones and decompression, time to
be active and time to just hang out.
After all, one of your ultimate goals
is to increase the time your visitors
spend at the destination, and to optimize
that time both qualitatively and
quantitatively. Dining options, events,
services, retail, interactive elements,
even landmarks, high-tech signage
and designated photo spots all contribute
here. The design of the destination,
together with a well-curated,
aesthetically appealing portfolio of
products and other offerings, plays
a not insignificant role in determining
the quality of time spent and, in
the end, revenue generated. And it’s
easy to gauge the effectiveness of a
design these days: If it’s a “grammable”
experience, then people will post
photos and selfies on Instagram and
other social media. That’s another reminder
that no destination can afford
to overlook connections to the digital
world today: If you want to make
sure your visitors become repeat customers,
and avoid the kind of atypical
consumer perceptions that can cut an
adventure short, you’ve got to set the
stage for the real experience online
– and keep it alive offline afterward.
In short: Destination profiling creates
"Happy Places".
BERLIN
DAN PEARLMAN GROUP— THE DESTINATION EXPERIENCE
Wie begeistert man Berliner für Standortmarketing?
Unsere Vision für Berlin
war es, die Essenz dieser Stadt –
Heimat und Sehnsuchtsort zugleich
– in einer Brand Idea greifbar zu machen
und damit die Herzen der „härtesten
Zielgruppe der Welt“, der Berliner,
zu gewinnen. Dazu haben wir uns
gefragt, was Berlin für Menschen aus
aller Welt so attraktiv macht und was
sie gemeinsam mit Berlin verbinden.
Unsere Antwort: Es ist die Freiheit,
die für das besondere Berliner Lebensgefühl
steht und alle Zielgruppen
eint. Die jüngere Geschichte hat Berlin
zu einem internationalen Symbol der
Freiheit gemacht. In einer Zeit, in der
Freiheit vielerorts auf dem Spiel steht,
haben wir zusammen mit der Berlin
Holding Gesellschaft für Hauptstadt
Marketing mbH den Wesenskern dieser
Stadt im Hashtag #FreiheitBerlin
verdichtet. So wird das Standortmarketing
seit März 2017 auf lokaler,
nationaler und internationaler Ebene
zu einer vielstimmig erzählten Ode
an die Freiheit. Verantwortlich dafür
sind dan pearlman und insbesondere
die Kreativen von spring brand ideas.
How to impress Berliners for location
marketing? Our vision for Berlin was
to win the hearts of the worlds hardest
target group by taking the essence
of the city – home and place of longing
at the same time – and bringing
it to life through a brand Idea. So, we
asked ourselves, what is it that makes
Berlin so attractive for people from all
over the world? And our conclusion:
It's freedom that brings this specific
Berlin attitude of life. The recent history
made Berlin a historic international
symbol of freedom. In a time
where freedom is in stake in many
places in this world we consolidated
the city’s essential core value into
the hashtag #FreiheitBerlin. This way
we turned our location marketing into
an ode to freedom that has been told
and spread ever since locally, nationally
as well as internationally. Responsible
for the campaign is dan pearlman
and especially the creative team
of spring brand ideas.
Berlin weiß aus Erfahrung, dass Mauern
ein 100 Quadratmeter großes
Riesenposter mit dem Kampagnenleitmotiv
„Done with walls“ am Flughafen
Tegel alle ankommenden Berliner
From experience, Berlin and Berliners
know that walls between humans
are never a good idea. Berlin tourists
and travellers were greeted under the
banner of the „Done with walls“-campaign
at Tegel Airport on a hundred
square meters.
„Berlin ist mehr ein Weltteil als eine
Stadt“ – ohne Absender und nur mit
dem Hashtag versehen, bildeten berühmte
Zitate den Auftakt der Kampagne,
eine Ode an die Freiheit. Die
Statements wurden vielfach fotografiert
und auf verschiedenen
Social-Media-Plattformen gepostet und
weltweit geteilt.
Berlin is more a part of the world than
just a city. The campaign was kickedoff
with famous quotes, with just the
hashtag as an originator. The statements
were frequently photographed,
posted and shared on social media
platforms worldwide.
Um Menschen langfristig zu begeistern,
Die Mieter wurden dabei in
und der Konvertierung in Umsätze
für die Mieter. Mit dem Versprechen,
BIKINI BERLIN als Host of Creativity
zu etablieren, wurden inhaltliche
sukzessive über alle Kanäle synchronisiert
wurden. Nicole Srock.Stanley
In 2015 and 2016, dan pearlman has
tenants have been involved in
developing the overall brand strategy.
The aim is to increase shopper awareness,
Was macht eine Destination zu einem
„Happy Place“?
Eine Destination ist ein Ort, an dem
ich ganz willkommen und als Mensch
mit all meinen Wünschen und Bedürfnissen
zuhause bin. Hier kann ich meinem
Alltagsstress entfliehen und nur
ich selbst sein. Alle meine Bedürfnisse
im Zeitraum des Verweilens werden
erfüllt. An diesem Ort möchte ich
nicht nur Erwartbares antreffen, sondern
will überrascht werden. Mit einer
Vielfalt von Eindrücken gehe ich nach
Hause. Besondere Erlebnisse wirken
nach, führen zu bleibenden Erinnerungen
und machen glücklich. Solch
ein Ort hat die Bezeichnung „Happy
Place“ verdient.
Destinationen früher und heute –
was macht den Unterschied?
Früher war eine Destination oft ein Naturspektakel
mit angedockten Kommoditäten.
Heute ist eine Destination
überwiegend von Menschen gemacht
und in einem urbanen Kontext angesiedelt.
Die hohe Kunst beim Destination
Profiling ist es, neue Sehnsuchtsorte
zu schaffen, die im globalen Wettbewerb
mit jahrhundertealten Standortmarken
wie Paris, Venedig oder der
Cheops-Pyramide bestehen können.
Dabei ist die emotionale Komponente
mindestens so wichtig wie das technologische
Know-How und das Wissen
um die Funktionsweisen eines
Formats.
Branding einhergehen.
Was wird für das Destination Profiling
in Zukunft wichtig?
Die Entwicklung in der Zukunft geht
weg von Monoformaten hin zu hybriden
Formaten. Sogenannte Mixed-Used-Destinationen
garantieren
die nötige Flexibilität und Wandelbarkeit
für verschiedene Nutzergruppen,
sich stetig verändernde Ansprüche, in
disruptiven Zeiten. Ein Ort muss innerhalb
von 24 Stunden unterschiedliche
Modi annehmen, etwa durch eine
Eventisierung oder das Schaffen von
Bedarfsanlässen. Jede Art von Destination
ist von dieser Entwicklung
betroffen.
Was wird beim Destination Profiling
über- bzw. unterschätzt?
Technik bzw. Technologien als monothematische
Experience werden überschätzt.
Technik soll vielmehr helfen,
das sinnliche Erlebnis zu verstärken
und gehört als essentieller Bestandteil
in jede Destination. Zum Beispiel
Virtual Reality Experiences, die entschleunigen
und Entspannung verschaffen.
Wir werden uns daran gewöhnen,
die Fiktion für Wirklichkeit zu
halten. Die Zeit bzw. Freizeit als limitierender
Faktor wird unterschätzt. Zeit
ist die Währung der Neuzeit. Du gibst
Zeit aus, kein Geld. Hier gilt es, in der
Fülle von Angeboten relevant zu sein.
What makes a destination
a “happy place”?
A destination is place where I feel totally
welcome and at home as a person
with all my needs and desires
– where I can escape the stress of
everyday life and just be me. All my
needs are met while I’m there. It’s a
place where I don’t just want to find
the expected; I want to be surprised
too. And I go home with lots of great
memories. Special experiences have
long-lasting effects; they leave lasting
impressions and make you happy.
A place like that has earned the right
to be called a “happy place.”
Destinations, then and now –
what’s the difference?
In the past, a destination was typically
a natural wonder with some amenities
bolted on. Today, most destinations are
created by people and located in an
urban context. Destination profiling
is the fine art of creating new destinations
that are desirable enough to
hold their own in the global competition
with centuries-old location brands
like Paris, Venice, or the Great Pyramid.
The emotional component is at
least as important here as technological
know-how or the understanding
of how a format works. A destination
needs to have a story that I like to recall,
and ideally one that I want to relive.
And that goes hand in hand with
clear, powerful branding.
What’s going to be important for
destination profiling in the future?
In the future, things will be moving
away from single formats to hybrid
formats. So-called “mixeduse”
destinations will guarantee the
flexibility and variability required
by different user groups and constantly
changing demands in disrup -
tive times. A place has to be able to
shift between different modes within
24 hours – for an event, for example,
or some other important occasion.
Every kind of destination will
be affected by these developments.
What gets over- or underrated in
destination profiling?
Technology, as the central theme of
an experience, is overrated. Instead,
technology should help to enhance the
sensory experience, and it should be an
essential element of every destination:
for example, virtual-reality experiences
that help us slow down and relax. We’re
going to get used to mistaking fiction
for reality. Time, or leisure time, as a limiting
factor, is underrated. Time is the
currency of the modern era. You spend
time, not money. The challenge here
is to stay relevant among all the other
options.
In den vergangenen vier Jahren arbeitete
Yasha Young mit über 300 Künstlern
zusammen. Neun Gastkuratoren
aus allen Teilen der Welt kuratierten die
Eröffnungsshow mit über 150 Künst -
lern. Mit neun verschiedenen Wer ken
von acht Künstlern wurde die Eröffnung
im gesamten Stadtbild auf Plakaten
und digital beworben. Insgesamt
kamen fast 20.000 Menschen.
Heute besuchen 800 bis 1000 Menschen
täglich das Museum.
Yasha Young has collaborated with
over 300 artists in the past few years.
Nine guest curators from all over the
world worked on the opening show,
which involved more than 150 artists.
Nine pieces of art by eight artists
were printed on posters and displayed
all over the city in the run-up
to the museum’s opening. Around
20,000 people attended the opening.
The museum now attracts 800-
1,000 visitors every day.
BRAND DESIGN
Das Brand Design zu Urban Nation mit
den Werten „Connect. Create. Care.“
besteht aus Wortmarke und Visual,
das sich aus den Buchstaben „UN“ zusammensetzt.
Die Formensprache des
„UN“ zitiert die neue Tür des Gründerzeithauses,
hinter der sich das Museum
wie eine Kathedrale öffnet. Die Buchstaben
bilden zudem eine Bühne für
die Kunst und die Künstler und sind
starke Leitplanken für die Kommunikation
des URBAN NATION MUSEUM
FOR URBAN CONTEMPORARY ART.
The URBAN NATION brand design
– complemented by its core values
“Connect. Create. Care.” – consists
of a word mark and a visual made up
of two letters, “UN”. The design references
the new door to the Gründerzeit-era
building behind which the
museum opens up like a cathedral.
Additionally, the letters form a stage
for the art and the artists, and provide
a strong foundation for the museum’s
communication activities.
COMMUNICATION IS KEY
Marion Heine, Founder and CCO,
Spring. Brandideas GmbH, Member
dan pearlman Group
Wie kommuniziert man
Destinationen?
Destinationen sind vor allem erst einmal
Orte - Orte der Kunst, des Lernens
oder Lehrens, des Wissenstransfers
oder des Genusses, Orte einer Gesellschaft,
für Politik oder Wirtschaft.
Allen gemeinsam ist ihr Charakter als
Orte der Begegnung von Menschen
mit Menschen. Und natürlich, Kommunikationsexperten
prägen diesen
Charakter entscheidend mit. Dabei
stellte. In einem zweiten Schritt haben
wir uns getraut, die Berliner, eine
der härtesten Zielgruppen der Welt,
zu befragen, was Berlin für sie ausmacht.
Entstanden sind unkonventionelle
Bilder, die vom Lebens- und
Freiheitsgefühl der Berliner erzählen.
Letztlich dreht es sich bei dem „Was“,
„Wie“ und „Warum“ in der Kommunikation
immer um die Menschen. Ihren
Wünschen und Bedürfnissen zu entsprechen
und echte Beziehungen aufzubauen,
muss das Ziel von Kommunikation
sein. Nur wer die Menschen
tatsächlich kommunikativ berührt,
schafft dialogische Beziehungen.
Sonst landet man Ufos, die den Menschen
fremd bleiben.
Wie viel Komplexität steckt in diesen
Beziehungen?
Meine Beziehung
wächst. Störungen schaden
dieser Beziehung, da diese mich eventuell
wieder „ent-lieben“ lassen. Hier
besteht eine andauernde kommunikative
Pflegepflicht. Als Kommunikationsexperten
begleiten wir diese Beziehungspflege
maßgeblich. Ein Ort
muss zu mir sprechen, bevor und während
ich ihn besuche und auch, wenn
ich nicht mehr da bin – zum Beispiel
über digitale Kommunikationskanäle,
auf denen ich meine Erlebnisse als instagramfähiges
Erlebnis teilen kann.
COMMUNICATION IS KEY
Marion Heine, Founder and CCO,
Spring. Brandideas GmbH, Member
dan pearlman Group
How do you communicate
a destination?
First and foremost, destinations are
places – places for art, for learning
and teaching, for information sharing
or pleasure, for socializing, for politics
or business. The essence of all
of these is that they’re places where
people come together. And naturally,
communications experts play a critical
role in shaping that essence. To
do that, we first need to have a holistic
understanding of these places.
Working from that comprehensive
understanding, we then energize
them through communication, turning
them into places of desire – places
people want to go to and keep coming
back to.
hashtag #freiheitberlin to center the
campaign on the city’s unique feeling
of freedom (Freiheit). Freedom is the
essence of the history, attitude, and
options that Berlin offers its residents.
We very intentionally kicked off the
campaign with an “Ode to Freedom,”
which appeared without any logo or
source and focused on quotes about
freedom from famous people. Next,
we got up the nerve to ask Berliners,
one of the toughest target groups
in the world, what Berlin meant to
them. The result was a set of unconventional
images that told the story
of Berliners’ attitude to life and freedom.
The “what,” “how” and “why”
of everything we communicate ultimately
comes down to people. The
goal of communication has to be to
fulfill people’s needs and desires, and
to build real relationships. Only when
you truly reach people through communication
can you create dialogue.
Otherwise you’re just landing UFOs
that will always remain alien.
the same way as relationships with
people. Ideally, places need to have a
“magic moment,” a love-at-first-sight
experience. When a place speaks to
me with a special language and a special
look, it moves me to enter into a
relationship with it. Every time I come
back, I’m building trust and creating
new memories and experiences.
In time I come to connect the place
with a feeling of familiarity. My relationship
grows. Negative experiences
damage the relationship and can
eventually cause me to “fall out of
love.” So you have to be constantly
fostering the bond through communication.
As communication experts,
we’re significantly involved in that. A
place has to speak to me before and
while I’m visiting it, and also when I’m
no longer there – for example, via digital
communication channels, where I
can share my visit as a “grammable”
experience.
And how do you do that?
One example is the marketing campaign
for the city of Berlin. As a guiding
principle, we decided to use the
How complex are these
relationships?
To put it in philosophical terms, relationships
with places form in much
THE FUTURE OF ZOO DESIGN
Kieran Stanley, Founder & CEO,
Creative Director, dan pearlman
Erlebnisarchitektur GmbH
Welche Rolle spielen Zoos heute?
Die historische Entwicklung des Zoos
ist gut dokumentiert. Von den aristokratischen
Ursprüngen als Tierschau,
bis zu den groß angelegten,
kulturlandschaftlichen, immersiven
Environments von heute, umfasst diese
Geschichte eine Vielzahl von Stilrichtungen
und Gestaltungsansätzen,
die eine grundsätzliche Veränderung
der Rolle des Zoos und seiner Funktion
in der Gesellschaft widerspiegeln.
Ich könnte hier sehr ausführlich
über die Geschichte und den Fortschritt
der Zoos, die verschiedenen
Designstile sowie die Beziehungen
zwischen Historismus, Themenarchitektur,
Taxonomie und Systematik
oder auch Naturschutz sprechen.
Ich möchte den Fokus an dieser Stelle
auf die Zukunft der Zoos legen. Ich
glaube, dass Zoos sich stets weiterentwickeln
und auch in Zukunft immer
eine wichtige Rolle für die Gesellschaft
spielen. Als Orte, an denen
Menschen Tiere von Angesicht zu Angesicht
treffen und dabei die Möglichkeit
haben, sich in die Tierwelt und
die Natur zu verlieben.
Welche Rolle spielen Zoodesigner?
Sie widmen sich den vier Hauptaspekten
der heutigen Zoohaltung: Bildung,
Naturschutz, Forschung und Wissenschaft
sowie Freizeitgestaltung. Was
folgenden strategischen Optionen
zusammensetzt: Kooperation, Diversifizierung,
Neuinterpretation, Neuerfindung,
Neupositionierung oder
auch virtuelles Handeln. Darüber hinaus
wird der zukünftige Erfolg von
Zoos davon bedingt sein, dass sie
von starken Werten leben. Wir können
alle oben genannten Punkte umsetzen,
aber die Hauptpriorität besteht
nach wie vor darin, authentisch
zu sein, nach Werten zu leben, gute
Arbeit zu leisten und diese wirksam
der Öffentlichkeit mitzuteilen. Das bedeutet,
dass Zoos ihre Arbeit transparent
machen und den Menschen bzw.
Publikum zeigen, dass Tierschutz ihre
größte Priorität ist. Aber vor allem inspirieren
Zoos, indem sie einen Perspektivwechsel
anbieten: Versuchen
sie, Ihre Besucher zu inspirieren, indem
Sie deren Standpunkte verändern
und die Besucher in den Mittelpunkt
der Handlung rücken. Wie ich
zu sagen pflege: Wenn Wissen eine
Bank ist und Phantasie die Währung,
ist die ultimative Zukunftsinvestition
das Erlebnis.
THE FUTURE OF ZOO DESIGN
Kieran Stanley, Founder & CEO,
Creative Director, dan pearlman
Erlebnisarchitektur GmbH
What is the role of zoos today?
The historical evolution of the zoo is well
documented. From its early aristocratic
beginnings as the menagerie to
the full-scale, cultural-landscape immersive
environments of today, this
history encompasses a multitude of
styles and design approaches that reflect
a fundamental shift in the role
of the zoo and its function in society.
I could expound at length on this evolutionary
history and the progression
of its various design styles, of the relationships
between historicism, themed
architecture, taxonomy and systematics
to the emergence of habitat immersion,
ride-attractions, and conservation,
etc. But my interest here is not
in rehashing this history but in laying
out an argument for where zoos are
headed. I believe zoos will continue
to evolve but will always serve a critical
role for society: as places where
people meet animals face-to-face and
fall in love with wildlife.
What is the role of zoo designers?
Zoo designers have taken to heart the
four main tasks that define contemporary
zookeeping: education, conservation,
research and science, and
leisure activities. That being the case,
what else is relevant for anticipating
the changes in the years ahead? It can
be assumed that future zoos will be
more selective in their animal collections,
choosing species suited to the
climatic conditions, staff expertise
and the individual zoo’s conservation
mission. This means larger and more
flexible exhibits, educational interaction
etc. But despite this evolutionary
path within the industry as a whole,
each zoo must still seek out its own
unique identity. Zoo design has less
to do with design itself, and moreover
it has a role to play in the understanding
and consequent implementation
of the strategic development.
What is crucial for the future success
of zoos?
If a zoo is to continue to stay relevant,
the most important question it can ask
is: How can I develop a unique strategy
that takes into account and exploits
the aspects I have to offer? The key to
any zoo’s future success lies in coming
up with a tailor-made approach
that draws from one or more of the
following strategic options: cooperation,
diversification, reinterpretation,
reinvention, repositioning or being virtual.
In addition, the future success of
zoos will be contingent upon adopting
and living by strong values. We can
implement and take all of the above
points to heart but the main priority
is still to be authentic, to live according
to values, to do good work and to
effectively communicate this to the
public. This means being transparent
about the work you’re doing and
demonstrating to people that animal
welfare is your highest concern. But
above all be inspiring by offering a
change in perspective: try to inspire
your visitors by shifting their points
of view and bringing them into the
center of the action. As I like to say,
if knowledge is a bank and imagination
the currency, the ultimate future
investment is experience!
Wie lassen sich Städte erneuern? Für
Kemptens historisches Innenstadtviertel
stand diese Frage am Anfang eines
tiefgreifenden Revitalisierungsprojektes.
Gemeinsam mit engagierten Bürgern,
Einzelhändlern und der Stadt
entwickelte dan pearlman die Stadtmarke
»Mühlbachquartier« und stellte
den Neuanfang unter das Motto »Fortschritt
aus Tradition«. Eine ganzheitliche
Marketingstrategie und ein landschaftsplanerischer
Umbau machen
aus dem ehemals unbeliebten Stadtteil
ein modernes und traditionsreiches
Viertel mit hoher Aufenthaltsqualität.
Die Stadtmarke »Mühlbachquartier«
steht nach der Revitalisierung für
eine beliebte, hochfrequentierte Einkaufs-
und Flaniermeile. Besonderes
Wahrzeichen ist die neue Brunnenanlage
mit einem vier Meter großen
Mühlrad und einem 140 Meter langen
Wasserbach, der als Installation
den Verlauf des ursprünglich dort
fließenden Mühlbachs nachzeichnet.
Auch das Corporate Design & Naming
für das sympathische Mühlbachquartier
wurden von dan pearlman
entwickelt.
How can we renew cities? For Kemptens
historic downtown neighbourhood that
question was the beginning of a profound
revitalization project. Together
with committed citizens, retailers and
the city dan pearlman developed the
city brand »Quartier Mühlbach« and
introduced a new beginning under
the motto »Progress by Tradition«.
A holistic marketing strategy and a
remodelling of the landscape planning
make the formerly infamous
district a modern and traditional
neighbourhood with high amenity
value. After the revitalization the city
brand »Mühlbach Quartier« embodies
a popular and heavily frequented
shopping area. The new fountain
with a seven-foot water wheel and a
140-foot water brook is the special
landmark, which traces the history
of the installation originally flowing
from Mühlbach. The corporate design
& naming of the idyllic Mühlbach Quarter
was also developed by dan pearlman.
war immer schon ein Ort der Hochkultur
und ein Anziehungspunkt für
Künstler und Kulturinteressierte. Franz
Schubert, Arthur Schopenhauer, Thomas
Kunstfestival sommer.frische.kunst. ist
es gelungen, einen begehrten Schauplatz
project whose residence program
offered young artists a chance
to blossom. Today, more than 50 artists
have taken the Bad Gastein experience
with them into the wider world,
and the area’s artistic offerings have
continued to expand. In addition to
the resident artists’ studio, the generating
DIE STADT DER ZUKUNFT –
ZWISCHEN UTOPIE UND DYSTOPIE
Prof. Dr. Ares Kalandides, inpolice
urbanism GmbH
Alterung, E-Commerce, Automatisierung,
Artificial Intelligence (AI), Klimawandel:
zurzeit scheint es, dass unsere
Welt sich schneller entwickelt, als dass
wir hinschauen können. Wie werden
wir morgen leben? Wie werden unsere
Städte aussehen? Vor welchen Herausforderungen
stehen wir und welche
neuen Chancen öffnen sich uns?
Werden alle unsere Probleme gelöst
oder steht uns eine größere Katastrophe
bevor?
Lange waren wir uns sicher, dass durch
die Globalisierung die Welt immer
ähnlicher wird: Die entferntesten Orte
der Welt sind bereits miteinander verbunden;
Wir kaufen dieselben Markenprodukte
in Asien, Afrika, Amerika
oder Europa; Die sozialen Medien
streuen Nachrichten (mitunter auch
Fake News) in Höchstgeschwindigkeit
durch den Äther. Diese Gleichschaltung
trügt: wir wissen nunmehr, dass
während immer mehr Menschen in
Großstädte ziehen, schrumpfen manche
Kleinestädte und einige ländliche
Gegenden immer weiter; die Schwermetalle
unsere Smartphones verwandeln
ganze Landstriche zu Giftwüsten.
Was für den Einen eine Utopie
ist, wird für den anderen zur Dystopie.
Die Prognosen einer schnell alternden
Gesellschaft in Deutschland scheinen
sich nicht zu bewahrheiten – zumindest
nicht in der bisher angenommenen
Intensität. Wir beobachten sogar
eine Verjüngung einiger Großstädte
– während andere veralten. Zudem
wird unsere Gesellschaft bunter: unterschiedliche
Kulturen und individualisierte
Lebensstile leben miteinander
im engen Raum. Neue Wohn- und
Arbeitskonzepte müssen auf diese
Entwicklungen reagieren: Mehrgenerationenhäuser
scheinen wieder im
Kommen zu sein; Roboter werden das
Leben älterer Menschen verändern und
sind vielleicht in wenigen Jahren auf
unseren Straßen zu sehen. Wir werden
auf, über oder unter dem Wasser
wohnen können; Wir werden in Betonwüsten
oder in vertikalen Gärten leben;
Jeder von uns wird seine eigene
Energie in kleinen autarken Einheiten
Arbeiten-Spielen-Einkaufen
Fensterbrett liefern. Dafür werden
wir immer weniger Geschäfte
auf unseren Straßen sehen; wenige
Dienstleistungen, die man nicht online
bekommt, so wie ein Frisör oder
ein Nagelstudio werden in den Städten
bleiben. Sonst werden die Orte
überleben, die zur Begegnung einladen:
die Cafés, die Co-working Spaces
– und gegebenenfalls hybride Nutzungen,
die wir heute kaum erahnen können.
Je mehr uns die Technologie isoliert,
desto mehr sehnen wir uns nach
Nähe, Wärme und Menschlichkeit. Die
Stadtplanung der Zukunft muss mehr
als je zuvor die menschlichen Begegnungen
im Mittelpunkt aller Überlegungen
stellen.
Was ist unsere Antwort auf diese Technologie?
Wollen wir wirklich, dass unser
Kühlschrank mehr weiß über unsere
Essgewohnheiten als wir selbst?
Wer wird die riesen Mengen an Daten
produzieren, verwalten, verwerten
und vor allem besitzen? Was wollen
wir davon und was wollen wir nicht?
Haben wir überhaupt eine Wahl? Es
geht darum, diese Zukunft zu gestalten,
sie kontrollierbarer, sicherer, demokratischer
und gerechter zu machen.
Ihr aus dem Weg zu gehen, das
können wir nicht.
THE FUTURE OF THE CITY -
BETWEEN UTOPIA AND DYSTOPIA
Prof. Dr. Ares Kalandides, inpolice
urbanism GmbH
Aging, E-Commerce, Automation, Artificial
Intelligence, Climate Change:
it seems that our world is currently
evolving faster than ever. How are
we going to live tomorrow? What will
our cities look like? What challenges
do we face and what new opportunities
are opening up for us? Are all our
problems about to be solved or are
we facing a major disaster?
For a long time, we were sure that
globalization would make the world
look ever more similar: the remotest
places in the world are already
connected; we buy the same branded
products in Asia, Africa, America
or Europe; social media diffuse news
(sometimes even fake news) in high
speed across the globe. This homogeneity
is deceptive: we now know
that as more and more people move
into big cities, some small towns and
some rural areas are shrinking; the
heavy metals of our smartphones turn
whole regions into poisonous wastes.
What is utopian for one becomes dystopia
for another.
The forecasts of a rapidly aging society
in Germany do not seem to come
true - at least not in the previously assumed
intensity. We even see some
big cities get younger - while others
are grow old. In addition, our society
is becoming more colourful: different
cultures and individualized lifestyles
live together in a small space. New living
and working concepts have to react
to these developments: multi-generation
living seem to be on the rise
again; robots will change the lives of
older people and may be seen on our
streets in a few years' time. We will be
able to live on, above or below water;
we will live in concrete deserts or in
vertical gardens; each of us will be
able to produce our own energy in
small self-sufficient units.
Maybe there will be less work, but the
work we have will certainly change
radically: as the office becomes more
homeley the home turns into an office;
virtual worlds will allow us to work in
the same room - with people who are
not there at all; through digital glasses,
we will experience an environment
that has been created on a computer.
Elector-mobility and new types of
public transport will revolutionize
the image of our cities. Our mobility
patterns are already changing. What
does it mean if we stop commuting
to work or for shopping at the same
time each day? There will be no rush
hours or maybe our daily travel will diminish
altogether. But maybe we will
become more globally mobile, if we
can work from anywhere. We will be
able to take work, play and shopping
with us wherever we travel.
Our fridge will fill itself. It will know
when we’re out of milk, it will know
how often we drink milk and will order
it; a drone will deliver the fresh milk
onto our window sill. We will probably
see fewer and fewer shops on our
streets; few services that you cannot
get online, such as a hairdresser
or a nail salon will remain in the cities.
Otherwise, it’s the places that invite
people to meet that will survive:
the cafés, the co-working spaces -
and possibly hybrid uses that we can
barely imagine today. The more isolating
the technology, the more we long
for closeness, warmth, and humanity.
More than ever before, city planning
must place human encounters at the
centre of all considerations.
What is our answer to technology?
Do we really want our fridge to know
more about our eating habit than ourselves?
Who will produce, manage, exploit
and, above all, possess the huge
amounts of data? Which of that do we
want and what not? Do we even have
a choice? It is about shaping this future:
making it more controllable, more
democratic, safer, and fairer. But we
cannot pretend it’s not coming.
DAN PEARLMAN GROUP — THE DESTINATION EXPERIENCE
Wie wollen wir in Zukunft leben? Welchen
Beitrag können wir als Kreativagenturen
dazu leisten? Diese Fragen
beschäftigen uns in unserer täglichen
Arbeit. Wir planen und gestalten heute
schon die Destinationen von morgen
und setzen uns intensiv damit
auseinander, wie öffentliche und private
Orte sowie die Themen Freizeit
und Arbeit, sowie Wissens- und Informationstransfer
innovativ und zukunftsfähig
aufgebaut und inszeniert
werden müssen. Die Beispiele reichen
vom Neudenken eines stillgelegten
Flughafens, der Revitalisierung einer
alten Werft, bis hin zur Planung von
Freizeitdestinationen und der Weiterentwicklung
hybrider Formate für
Shopping Malls. Wir nehmen Sie mit
auf eine Reise zu zukünftigen Konzepten
und Projekten.
How do we hope to live in the future?
And how can we, as a creative agency,
help achieve that goal? These are the
questions we face in our day-to-day
work. We’re already planning and designing
tomorrow’s destinations today
– and we’re thinking hard about the
need to organize and package public
and private places, not to mention
work, leisure, information sharing and
knowledge transfer, in a way that’s innovative
and sustainable for the future.
Examples include rethinking a
decommissioned airport, revitalizing
an old shipyard, designing leisure destinations,
and developing hybrid formats
for shopping malls. Come along
with us on a tour of our future concepts
and projects!
Als Auftakt und Vollendung der Hamburger
im Jahr 2025 das östliche Ende der
historischen Stadterweiterung direkt
an den Elbbrücken krönen. Mit
233m Höhe und 104.000 qm Bruttogeschossfläche
this will create a new landmark for
the Hanseatic city in the architectural
Die Digitalisierung wird unser Leben
in den nächsten 20 Jahren stärker verändern
als in den letzten 200 Jahren.
Diese Veränderung umfasst alle Bereiche
unseres Lebens – unser Arbeitsleben,
unsere Freizeit und die Bedeutung
von Unternehmen und Marken.
Echte Erlebnisse spielen in einer digitalisierten
und globalisierten Zukunft
eine herausragende Rolle, denn
sie verbinden Menschen miteinander
und schaffen emotionale Beziehungen
zwischen Menschen und Marken.
Wir glauben, dass die Herausforderungen
der Zukunft weder durch klassische
Agenturen und Unternehmensberater
noch durch ein Unternehmen
allein gemeistert werden können.
Unternehmen müssen langfristige Beziehungen
zu ihren Kunden aufbauen
und ihnen an jedem Touchpoint ein
relevantes Erlebnis bieten. Deshalb
haben wir die dan pearlman Group
als Gruppe spezialisierter, inhabergeführter
Boutique Agenturen mit einem
gemeinsam Versprechen gegründet:
Wir machen Marken zum Erlebnis
und Erlebnisse zur Marke.
dan
Pearlman
Group
Die dan pearlman Group hilft Unternehmen,
die Bedürfnisse von Menschen
zu verstehen und entwickelt aus
diesem Verständnis heraus Lösungen,
von der Strategie über die Kreation bis
zur Umsetzung und darüber hinaus,
die Marken für Kunden und Mitarbeiter
erlebbar machen. Das integrierte
Erlebnis steht dabei im Mittelpunkt
und so verbinden die beteiligten Unternehmen
integrativ und cross-medial
die gesamte Customer Journey
zu einem einzigartigen, emotionalen
Markenerlebnis. Mit einem Netzwerk
von Partnern ist die dan pearlman
Group der Generalübernehmer
für strategische Kreativität - von der
Strategie über die Kreation bis zur
Umsetzung in „Bricks & Bytes.“
Due to Digitalization, our life will
change more in the next 20 years
than it has in the last 200 years. This
transition will concern all spheres of
our life - especially our working life,
our leisure activities and the meaning
of enterprises and markets. Substantial
experiences will play a significant
role in a more digitalized and
globalized future since they connect
people and generate emotional relationships
between people and brands.
We think that the challenges of tomorrow
can not be mastered by neither
classical consulting and agencies nor
by a company itself. Companies need
to establish a longterm relationships
between their customers and offer
authentic experiences at any touchpoint.
Therefore we founded the dan
pearlman Group. As a group of specialized
and owner-managed boutique
agencies with a joint promise:
We form brands into experiences
and experiences into brands.
The dan pearlman Group helps companies
understand the needs of people
and develops solutions, from strategy
to creation and realization. Furthermore
it makes brands perceptible
for customers and employees. By
putting the focus on the integrated
experience, participating companies
connect the whole customer journey
integrative and cross-medial to
a unique and emotional brand experience.
With our network of partners
the dan pearlman Group becomes the
general contractor for strategic creativity.
The foundation for the dan pearlman
The implementation of these concepts
is realized by the dan pearlman
gestalten wollen.
The brand architects are the designers
and creators of brands. Thinking
visionary and seeing the evolution of a
brand in the context of changing customer
needs is the first step for a successful
future of a brand. Brand architecture,
as we understand it, is more
than that: together with the brand
company we develop a collaboration
on eye level for people and the success
of the brand.
sie durch eine bewusste Abfolge
von Raum, Licht, Inhalten sowie
Indoor - und Outdoor Erlebnissen mit
den Methoden von Storytelling und
Experience Architecture defines
unique spaces and places where individual
encounters and experiences
are made possible and curiosity
can unfold. Instead of defining architecture
by its structure, we prefer to
define it through a conscious choice
in the sequence of space, light, content
similar to methods used in storytelling
we build stories.
How we work
In den drei Geschäftsfeldern Brand
von Menschen, Unternehmen
und Orten. Jedes Geschäftsfeld
hat einen eigenen Fokus, das Wissen
und die Erfahrung aus den einzelnen
Bereichen formen sich darüber hinaus
zu einem zukunftsgerichteten Gesamterlebnis,
welches die Bedürfnisse
der Menschen, der Gesellschaft und
der Unternehmen in einer tragfähigen
In the three business areas Brand &
Every business area has its own focus.
