They were the type used by traveling performers, more or less portable wardrobe closets where costumes and other valuables were kept. He found one and opened it. But Alice DeGarmo didn’t seem to have that problem. She was a success almost from the start, as Karl could see from a scrapbook of clippings that began in 1903. In January of that year she became part of a gymnast act called “The Kenyons,” starting at a vaudeville theater in Brooklyn, New York. A man would hold two long perch bars with a belt at his waist. Alice performed her trapeze feats on the supports between the two bars. While she was a star in her field, she was not a star headliner. The type of act Alice did was called a “dumb act.” In vaudeville terms, it meant no dialogue, no singing. Dumb acts were typically the first act on a vaudeville bill (as Alice’s nearly always was) or the last. They were not the headliners — headlining acts were usually the last act before intermission and the next-to-last act before closing. Headliners were usually the comedians or singers. Sophie Tucker, Al Jolson, even George Burns after he met Gracie, were all headline acts. In the days before air-conditioning, vaudeville theaters were closed in summer months.
