Jake’s Outdoor Adventures
It is summer fishing season here on the Outer Banks. I know
there are a lot of anglers that head to the Outer Banks and bring
their own boats to fi sh out of Oregon Inlet and Hatteras. For those
that come here, the Outer Banks offers plenty of near shore fi shing
opportunities that give the visiting angler a chance to target several
different species of fi sh. You can single out several different fisheries
and still be in site of the land. The fi rst fish to target would be the
ones directly in the inlets or just outside of them. The Bluefi sh and
the Spanish Mackerel are easily caught by trolling with Sea Striker
Clark Spoons or Bowed Up Spoons. You could also use small planers
or inline trolling weights to vary the depth of your trolling spread
to target fish at different depths. I also like to pull one line with a Sea
Striker Sea Bird that will disturb the topwater in the trolling spread. If
you see birds working the water, then troll in or around where they
are working. Remember to check you size and creel limits with NC
Marine Fisheries Webpage at http://portal.ncdenr.org/web/mf/recreational-fi
shing-size-and-bag-limits .
The next species you can fi sh for are Triggerfi sh, Spadefi sh, Black
Sea Bass, and Amberjack. You can fi nd these fi sh on wrecks and artifi
cial reefs. Before you leave, check your nautical charts for wrecks
and the location of artifi cial reefs. Also make sure you have plenty of
different sizes of lead weights for fi shing these locations because you
may get hung up on the bottom or on wrecks and lose you rigs. This
is just the cost of doing business when you are doing this type of
fi shing. Make sure you bring plenty of bait because sometimes when
catching Triggerfi sh, you will go through a lot of bait trying to hook
these bait thieves. I like using squid or cut Albacore when targeting
these fi sh. The size of the hook you use will be determined by the
size of the fish you are in. It is good to take a few live Croakers or
by Jake Worthington
Pinfi sh if you have a livewell on your boat. Try to send a couple of
them down and see if you can hook an Amberjack. If one hits the
bait, hang on because an Amberjack will give you a good hard fi ght!
The last fi sh you could try for is King Mackerel. Your luck in catching
these fi sh will be dependent on bait present and water temperature.
You can target these fi sh in two ways--that is slow trolling live bait
or trolling Bowed Up Spoons, either with or without strip bait on the
spoons. This fi shery can be hit or miss but if you limit out on Bluefi sh,
Spanish Mackerel and Bottomfi sh then you could give it a shot while
you are already out anyway.
If you are here on vacation and didn’t bring your boat, don’t worry.
Check local fi shing tackle shops, marinas and fi shing centers to
help you select one of these charter fi shing trips while on the Outer
Banks!
