HE SHEPHERD’S VOICE
Church Location: 300 1st Ave. NW, Buffalo, MN
Jesus, in today’s Gospel, says that He is the good
shepherd the prophets had promised to Israel.
He is the shepherd-prince, the new David—who frees people from
bondage to sin and gathers them into one flock, the Church, under a
new covenant, made in His blood (see Ezekiel 34:10-13, 23-31).
His flock includes other sheep, He says, far more than the dispersed
children of Israel (see Isaiah 56:8; John 11:52). And He gave His
Church the mission of shepherding all peoples to the Father.
In today’s First Reading, we see the beginnings of that mission in the
testimony of Peter, whom the Lord appointed shepherd of His Church
(see John 21:15-17).
Peter tells the “builders” of Israel’s temple, that God has made the
stone they rejected the cornerstone of a new spiritual temple, the
Church (see Mark 12:10-13; 1 Peter 2:4-7).
Through the ministry of the Church, the shepherd still speaks (see Luke
10:16),and forgives sins (see John 20:23), and makes His body and
blood present, that all may know Him in the breaking of the bread (see
Luke 24:35). It is a mission that will continue until all the world is one
flock under the one shepherd.
In laying down His life and taking it up again, Jesus made it possible for
us to know God as He did—as sons and daughters of the Father who
loves us. As we hear in today’s Epistle, He calls us His children, as He
called Israel His son when He led them out of Egypt and made His
covenant with them (see Exodus 4:22-23; Revelation 21:7).
Today, let us listen for His voice as He speaks to us in the Scriptures,
and vow again to be more faithful followers. And let us give thanks for
the blessings He bestows from His altar.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful,
committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's
the only thing that ever has.”
I’m sure I have shared this quote by Margaret Mead before. It’s one of my favorites! As a Catholic School
Principal, I see the message of this passage coming true over and over. Last weekend’s Back to the Prom
was another example….it was truly AMAZING!!! Those in attendance feasted on delicious food, mingled with
friends old and new, took a chance at the “Wall of Wine”, bid on desirable items on both the silent and live
auctions, and danced the night away. I’m sure all would agree that the event was an amazing success...with
everyone having a great time raising money for a cherished school!
Although this event has evolved into a great success, it would never have gotten this far without that first
small group of committed people.– staff, parents, etc.– who, with hard work and determination, created the
first Spring Fever Extravaganza 11 years ago. St. Francis Xavier School is blessed to have had that first small
group of people and small groups evolving ever since. For it is through their effort, energy and dedication to
this school that we are able to raise funds that enhance our educational programs and have fun doing it.
Each year the school staff, along with Father Hennen’s input, comprises a large-item wish list for Spring
Fever. Below is a copy of that list. We were blessed to have several of our items purchased by those in
attendance Saturday night. If you were not able to join us, but would like to help out, please contact me by
phone or email. Any donation is appreciated – and you can surely specify which of the following items you’d
like to help with!
7 projectors for classrooms at $900 each (all were purchased Saturday night! THANK YOU!!!)
Onsite guidance and counseling services for all students – 4 hours/month - $3600 ($1300 was
donated Saturday night – still looking for $2300)
iPads for a mobile classroom at $400 each – wishing for 20–25 (six were donated Saturday night
– still looking for 14–19 more)
We also have six wine storage cubes available for sale for $20 each.
Hats off to this year’s Spring Fever Committee and all those who attended, donated, and prayed for its
success! Your devotion is immeasurable and our gratitude is overflowing! May you be blessed abundantly!
In Christ’s Peace,
