The journey of discipleship is a life-long exodus from
the slavery of sin and death to the holiness of truth in
Mount Zion, the promised land of eternal life. The road
can get rough. And when it does, we can be tempted to
complain like the Israelites in this week’s First Reading.
We have to see these times of hardship as a test of
what is in our hearts, a call to trust God more and to
purify the motives for our faith (Deuteronomy 8:2–3).
As Paul reminds us in this week’s Epistle, we must
leave behind our old self-deceptions and desires, and
live according to the likeness of God in which we are
made.
Jesus tells the crowd in this week’s Gospel that they
are following him for the wrong reasons. They seek him
because he filled their bellies. The Israelites, too, were
content to follow God so long as there was plenty of
food.
Food is the most obvious of signs - because it is the
most basic of our human needs. We need our daily
bread to live. But we cannot live by this bread alone.
We need the bread of eternal life that preserves those
who believe in him (Wisdom 16:20, 26).
This is the food that God longs to give us. This is the
bread we should be seeking. But too often we don’t ask
for this bread. Instead, we seek the perishable stuff of
our everyday wants and anxieties. In our weakness we
think these things are what we really need.
We have to trust God more. If we seek first his kingdom
and his righteousness, all these things will be ours as
well (Matthew 6:33).

MARRIAGE AMENDMENT CORNERSTONE
What’s the real threat to religious liberty posed
by same-sex “marriage”?
The legal redefinition of marriage can
threaten the religious liberty of
religious institutions and individuals
in potentially numerous ways,
involving various forms of
government sanction, ranging from
court orders compelling action against conscience, to
awards of money damages and other financial penalties,
to marginalization in public life:
1. Compelled Association: the government forces
religious institutions to retain as leaders, employees,
or members those who obtain legalized same-sex
“marriage”; or obligates wedding-related businesses
to provide services for same-sex “couples.”
2. Compelled Provision of Special Benefits: the
government forces religious institutions to extend
any special benefit they afford to actual marriage to
same-sex “marriage” as well.
3. Punishment for Speech: preaching, political action,
or conversation reflecting moral opposition to samesex
“marriage” represents actionable “harassment”
or “discrimination,” or forbidden “hate speech”.
4. Exclusion from Accreditation and Licensure:
those who adhere to the definition of marriage are
excluded from participation in highly regulated
professions and quasi-governmental functions, as
licenses are revoked and religious institutions lose
accredited status.
5. Exclusion from Government Funding, Religious
Accommodations, and Other Benefits: those who
adhere to the definition of marriage are excluded
from receiving government grants and contracts to
provide secular social services, and from various tax
exemptions.

ADULT FORMATION: THE JOURNEY TO
BECOMING CATHOLIC
The Rite of Christian Initiation of
Adults, otherwise known as the RCIA,
is a weekly process designed for adults
baptized in another faith tradition or nonbaptized
who wish to explore the Catholic faith tradition.
The sessions provide an opportunity for individuals to
bring their life experiences and values into dialogue with
the views, beliefs, and teachings of the Catholic faith.
Those who participate in the process will never be
pressured to join the Catholic Church.
For those who decide to become members of the
Catholic Church, they are received into the Church at the
Easter Vigil. At St. Francis Xavier we begin meeting in
the Fall until just after Easter on Thursday evenings. For

SERRA INTERNATIONAL
It has been said, "Serrans are the vocations arm of the
Church." Come and see what we are about! We
welcome all Catholics to our meetings.
The Serra Club of Wright County's next meeting is
August 9th. Please note change of location: this
meeting will be held at St. Peter’s in Delano. Father
Paul Kammen, Pastor of Saint Peter's and Saint Joseph's
Catholic Churches in Delano since July 2011, will be our
speaker. Prior to this he served as Associate Pastor at
two suburban parishes, Holy Name of Jesus in Medina
and Saint Hubert's in Chanhassen. Father majored in
political science at the U of MN before entering the St.
Paul Seminary in 2001.

BACK TO THE BASICS
This summer, our Director of Family
Faith Formation, Brantly Millegan, will
be giving short refreshers on Catholic
doctrine in the bulletin. Feel free to
contact Brantly to propose a topic or
ask a question about a topic already
covered.
One God, Three Persons
It is a dogma of the faith that the one
God eternally exists as three persons,
which we call the dogma of the Trinity.
There is only one God
Scripture is explicit that there is only one God (Deut 6.4)
who we are to worship alone (Ex 20.3-4).
Existing in Three Persons
It was revealed in the New Testament that the one God
has existed and always will exist as three persons,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Mt 28.19, Jn 1.1, Jn 10.30,
Eph 4.30, et al.).
Each of the three persons is fully God. The only
distinction between the persons is their relationship to
each other: the Father is the eternal source, the Son is
eternally begotten of the Father, and the Holy Spirit
eternally proceeds from the Father and the Son, as we
say in the Creed.
Clarifying Common Misconceptions
We do not worship three gods; there is only one
God.
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are not three different
modes or personas that God switches between.
God exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit at all
times.
It is not that each person is just a part of God, i.e.
with each being one-third; instead, each person is
the whole of God.
Why it matters
Since the final end of human life is knowledge of and
union with God Himself, and since the dogma of the
Trinity is about who God is, the dogma of the Trinity is
the central mystery of the Christian faith. This is also
important because we must worship God in truth (Jn
4.24) and because error regarding who God is leads to
error regarding other important parts of the faith (e.g.
who Jesus is, how we are saved, etc).

paragraphs 199-267 in the Catechism of the Catholic
Church.

Getting ready to go back to school can
be a burden for low income families,
especially those who have to
purchase supplies and clothing for
more than one child.
Our parish has been asked to collect
500 notebooks and 500 folders.
When you go shopping with your
children or grandchildren, please buy a
couple extra notebooks and/or folders.
There will be a donation box in the foyer
of the Church and in Trinity Hall to
collect these items. Thank you for being
the hands and feet of Jesus in the community!
