InChemRez Phenoxy PKHW-34
Waterborne Phenoxy Resin
InChemRez Phenoxy PKHW-34
Waterborne Phenoxy Resin
InChemRez Phenoxy PKHW-34 is a waterborne colloidal dispersion of high
molecular weight Phenoxy resin designed for thermoset and lowbake
coatings & adhesives.
Phenoxy resins (polyhydroxyethers) are tough, ductile, amorphous polymers
having excellent thermal stability, adhesive and cohesive strength,
and excellent vapor barrier properties. Phenoxy resins also react with
crosslinkers like isocyanates, phenolic & melamine resins, and W/B
polyaromatic acids along the backbone hydroxyl groups.
PKHW-34 is compatible with most waterborne polyurethanes and acrylics
at pH’s greater than 6.5. PKHW-34 contains approximately 10% by
weight volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) including non-HAP
propylenegycol propyl ether, n-butanol, and a small amount of
dimethylethanolamine. PKHW-34 has a hydroxyl equivalent weight of
about 400 on a solids basis. Recommended levels of crosslinkers range
from 10 to 20 phr based on resin solids.
APPLICATIONS
● Thermoset Waterborne
Coatings
● Plural Component
Coatings and Adhesives
InChemRez Phenoxy PKHW-34 is sold in 55-gallon open head lined
steel drums at 463 pounds (210 kg) net weight. the resin may be
stored at normal temperatures for up to one year. Avoid freezing
and avoid temperatures above 110ºF.
PKHW-34 is a combustible fluid due to the presence of organic
solvents; closed cup flash point is above 141ºF.
PKHW-34 is incompatible with acidic materials; low pH media
can cause loss of dispersibility and precipitation of the base resin
in PKHW-34.
Consult the product MSDS for additional information on properties,
hazards, and handling.
PKHW-34 is an anionically-stabilized colloidal dispersion
of a solid grade Phenoxy resin. The dispersion is a
non-Newtonian fluid at room temperature; it exhibits very
slight thixotropic behavior. PKHW-34 displays excellent
shelf stability, however at pH’s below 6.5 the disperse
phase will become unstable and some coagulum will
likely form.
PKHW-34 provide both hydroxyl groups and carboxyl
groups for subsequent crosslinking at elevated
temperatures in thin coatings on metals, glass, and
plastic. At room temperature PKHW-34 will crosslink
with polyaziridines, and at low bake conditions the
neat dispersion will develop water resistance, acid/
base resistance, and select solvent resistance. All
properly formulated thermoset coatings of PKHW-34
display excellent flexibility and surface hardness.
The addition of PKWH-34 to ambient cure 2k waterborne
formulations can improve ultimate film hardness,
shorten dry-to-touch times, and improve gloss.
Crosslinkers such as alkylated phenolics and
melamines are readily dispersed in PKHW-34 to provide
shelf-stable single pack thermoset formulations. Refer
to Technical Data Bulletin PS001 for more information.
The polymer in PKHW-34 is compliant with
21CFR175.300 for FDA applications such as beer &
beverage containers, drum linings, flexible packaging.
