<strong>in</strong> <strong>Primary</strong> Care<br />

This publication is an <strong>in</strong>itiative of the <strong>Post</strong> <strong>Polio</strong> Support Group. It is designed to<br />

promote a professional partnership <strong>in</strong> the support of the <strong>Polio</strong> Survivor and hopes<br />

to facilitate the multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary and holistic approach that he or she should expect<br />

at primary care level<br />

It is aimed at those provid<strong>in</strong>g medical care to the <strong>Polio</strong> Survivor and aspires<br />

to <strong>in</strong>form the various practitioners that are actively manag<strong>in</strong>g and treat<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

survivor’s condition.<br />

Many <strong>Polio</strong> Survivors are experienc<strong>in</strong>g the debilitat<strong>in</strong>g effects of <strong>Post</strong> <strong>Polio</strong><br />

<strong>Syndrome</strong> years after their <strong>in</strong>itial <strong>in</strong>fection caus<strong>in</strong>g…..<br />

muscle bone and jo<strong>in</strong>t pa<strong>in</strong>s muscle weakness extreme fatigue<br />

breath<strong>in</strong>g problems often related to sleep<strong>in</strong>g difficulty swallow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

problems severe <strong>in</strong>tolerance of cold a general decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> mobility<br />

The <strong>Post</strong> <strong>Polio</strong> Support Group acknowledges with thanks the support it has<br />

received to produce this publication <strong>in</strong> particular the professional work of the<br />

voluntary writ<strong>in</strong>g team and the f<strong>in</strong>ancial back<strong>in</strong>g of the Health Service Executive<br />

The <strong>Post</strong> <strong>Polio</strong> Support Group creates awareness and provides <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

regard<strong>in</strong>g The Late Effects of <strong>Polio</strong> among both <strong>Polio</strong> Survivors statutory agencies<br />

and the wider medical profession and works to ensure that no <strong>Polio</strong> Survivors have<br />

needs relat<strong>in</strong>g to their condition which are not be<strong>in</strong>g met<br />
