OGSG asks residents to clear
weeds from properties
Maureen Ihua-Maduenyi
The Ogun State
Government has asked
residents of the state to rid
their properties of weeds as
the rains intensify or face
sanction.
“Owners of properties
across the state must ensure
that their structures are not
allowed to be overrun by weeds
and anyone found wanting will
be sanctioned appropriately,”
the Commissioner for
Environment, Mr Bolaji
Oyeleye, was quoted to have
said in a statement.
Oyeleye added that
owners or residents of bushy
properties, who refused to
clear them and keep the
environment clean, could
be sanctioned as provided
for in Section 36 of the State
Environmental Management
(Miscellaneous) Provisions
Law of 2004.
He said owners and
residents of properties close
to highways across the state
should also clear weeds on
the spaces between their
properties and the highways or
other public roads, adding that
this would improve visibility
and help reduce frequent road
accidents.
“The state found this
measure necessary to ensure
that our environment is kept
clean and not conducive for
diseases to thrive or used as
hideouts by hoodlums and
criminally-minded people,” he
stated.
He said the government
would not renege on its
resolve and ongoing efforts
at ensuring a safe and healthy
environment for residents,
and called for support and cooperation from all residents of the state.
