Ever feel you need to get away? Hear a strange language,
try new food, and laugh at continental fashion? Even if it’s
just to bring home a giant Toblerone, a trip to France is
always good fun, which is why we teamed up with Brittany
Ferries to offer you the chance to win a trip to St Malo,
Cherbourg or Caen (see p66).
We didn’t stop there. Realising that February/March is
a tough time if you’re all spent up, we thought we’d fi nd
some great competitions to keep you busy such as gym
membership (p12) and tickets to see Kelly Clarkson (p7)
and KT Tunstall (p9).
If you’ve picked up Listed looking for ideas, look no
further. This month, with the inclusion of a fantastic new
international section, featuring food and events, we think
we’ve got it all covered. So even if you don’t win that trip
to France, you can still head over to Charminster Road to
sample restaurants of every nationality.
Bon chance!
A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE
AT THE NUFFIELD, SOUTHAMPTON
The heat is sweltering, and the demons burst forth in
madness, jealousy and sex.
Deception, rage, passion and brutality are themes explored in
Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. First performed in 1947,
this remains one of the most famous American plays of all time, and is
guaranteed to leave you simultaneously thrilled and drained.
Set in New Orleans, faded Southern belle Blanche DuBois arrives at
her sister Stella’s house after being fi red as a school teacher for having
an affair with a 17-year-old pupil. This, combined with a brief marriage
and the suicide of her husband, has led Blanche to live in a world where
fantasy and reality are blurred.
Blanche’s arrival at the Kowalski apartment is resented by Stella’s
brutish husband Stanley, who dominates Stella both physically and
emotionally. Stanley suspects Blanche is not all that she seems, and
is furious at her attempts to hold court over their relationship. The
collision course between Stanley and Blanche is in inevitable. The heat
is sweltering and the demons burst forth in madness, jealousy and sex.
Listed has two pairs of tickets up for grabs. For your chance to win, log
on to www.listedmagazine.com and answer the following question:
Q: What is the name of Stella’s husband?
A Streetcar Named Desire takes place at 7.30pm from 15 to 31 May 2008. Matinee at
RUN FATBOY RUN!
March 16th might seem a little early to
be unveiling white legs to the world,
but when over half a million people will
be doing at the same time, it doesn’t
seem so bad. Don’t worry, we’re not
suggesting joining the Studland Bay
Nudists (just yet) – but donning your
shorts and T-shirts to run a mile for
Sport Relief.
Bournemouth is one of the towns
chosen to host the national event,
which will see people of all abilities
and ages running and walking to raise
money for Comic Relief. Even Prince
William took part last year – though
at Sandhurst, sadly, not Bournemouth
– where possibly his big night out in
Elements was just a bit much for the
future king.
So...whether prince or pauper, lardarse
or hot stuff, make your way to
the Sir David English Sports Centre
on Sunday 16th March, where 1, 3 or
6-mile runs will be taking place. To fi nd
KT TUNSTALL
TICKETS
You know how it goes: one minute you’re supping on a brew
at the local gaff, the next you’re banging bin lids with Jools
Holland on national television and shifting copies of your debut
album like it’s going out of fashion. Real rags to riches story this
one – poverty even ravished the vowels in the poor girl’s name.
Ok, so that’s not entirely the story. In fact that’s not it at all
- KT Tunstall is one of these artists that was simply born with
suffi cient talent to take her out of West London and across the
world on tour. Her debut album, Eye to the Telescope, sold over
4 million copies, earned her an Ivor Novello award for the single
Suddenly I See and bagged her numerous slots on the festival
circuit. Her follow-up release, Drastic Fantastic, continues to
prove her one-woman-band blues will remain unrivalled on the
UK commercial music scene for some time to come. And to
think she began it all by banging on about some cherry tree.
This girl’s got talent – watch it come to life on her UK tour this
April.
KT plays the Southampton Guildhall on 07 April, and you can
claim a pair of tickets as your own. To win, simply go to
www.listedmagazine.com and answer the following question:
What is the name of KT Tunstall’s fi rst album?
BLACK ROCK COOKING AT ROOMSIX
If you ever wondered how Fred Flintstone
enjoyed his steak, wonder no longer.
Bournemouth’s brand new Vodka and grill
bar RoomSix is offering customers a rare
treat of a dining experience, serving their
platters ‘Black Rock Style’.
The Black Rock is a small, square,
volcanic rock, superheated to a scorching
440 degrees and brought out to your table
for you to cook your choice of meat before
your expert eye. Perfect for all those
fed up of giving lengthy explanations
to the waiter about what the defi nition
blue means to you. The rock sears each
surface of the meat, sealing in the meat’s
unique fl avour and juices. Because no oil
or fat is added to the mix, the Black Rock
is actually a pretty healthy way to dine
out.
Mind you, if you’re looking for more
than just eats for a night out, RoomSix
is defi nitely one of Bournemouth’s top
pre-club bars, serving a variety of vodkas.
Forget your ‘shot-off-the-shelf stuff
restaurant directory
www.listedmagazine.com
though, we’re talking the original infused
vodka you won’t to spoil with a mixer.
Though those that like to mix will fi nd a
variety of scrummy cocktails on the menu,
too.
You’ll fi nd RoomSix opposite Bournemouth
and Poole College in Lansdowne, and
things you’ll fi nd there include DJs, drinks
promotions and full licensing until 5am.
The venue is the fi rst venture into bar
ownership for entrepreneurs Scott
Richards and Andy Kingston. Scott is aged
only 19, but has been in and around the
bar and club industry for as long as he can
remember. Scott’s previous experience
includes running bars in Portsmouth,
Southampton and Bournemouth. Andy,
25, can name Future 3000 and Dorset
brewers Hall and Woodhouse as previous
infl uences on his career so far.
ART HOUSE
Remember when you were young
and Blue Peter presenters
magicked the most fantastical
treasures from old washing up liquid
bottles? And you were convinced that
you too could create such wonders;
except the washing up liquid bottle was
never empty, and heaven forbid you
empty it in the sink! Well now you’re an
adult, with everything you ever need to
create masterpieces. But where do you
go to feed your imagination? A trip to
the Art House in Southampton’s Bedford
Place, home of all things inventive,
innovative and frequently ingenious,
should do the trick.
Where does the Art House story begin?
Jani: Southampton has a great arts
scene but a bit of a gap where a
grassroots, community run arts space
could fi t. Cities like Brighton and Bristol
are awash with lovely little art cafes and
vintage clothes shops and many people
travel all that way to enjoy a good veggie
meal and shop for interesting crafts
and clothing... so we were delighted
to have the chance to bring that to
Bedford Place in Southampton and save
everybody’s carbon footprint!
in wonderland
There aren’t many cafes where you can while away an afternoon over a lentil pasty
and liquorice tea, explore two fl oors of funky artwork, and buy a vintage tank top on
your way out. Ellie Cowley talks to Art House owners Nina, Jani, Ziggy and Bik, about
the not-for-profi t enterprise creating a buzz in Southampton’s Bedford Place
How did the team meet?
Nina: The team all met through a shared
love of drumming kitchen utensils, cake,
entertaining and the urge to get people
together in a really creative positive
environment.
Let’s talk food. Who’s idea was the
vegetarian café?
Jani: The idea to serve food as part of
what we do fi tted well with our vision to
bring people together - eating is a very
friendly experience after all! I think our
focus on being sustainable made being a
vegetarian cafe an obvious choice.
I’m not so hot with a paintbrush, what
can I get up to at the Art House?
Nina: Over the next few months we’ll
be offering all sorts of courses and
activities from the more traditional Life
Drawing and Watercolour painting to
a fl ute group, guitar, Bodran (that’s an
Irish drum by the way) for beginners,
cookery demos (cooking is an art form
too!), collage, crochet, jewellery making,
drama, poetry... all of our activities
are open to beginners as well as more
experienced artists, so people can come
along without feeling they have to be the
next Picasso or Judy Dench.
www.listedmagazine.com
If the Art House had a motto it would
have to be....?
Nina: It doesn’t matter if it’s wonky (Bik
joins in) so long as it’s orange
Being non-for-profi t and independent,
how does the Art House survive?
Jani: A lot of people misunderstand the
concept of being non-profi t making - it
doesn’t mean we don’t need to make
any money! What it means is that what
would be called profi t is called ‘surplus’
as it’s not paid to shareholders, but put
back into the business to help it thrive
and grow.
What you got coming up you want to
shout about?
Jani: The Trash Cocktail Fashion show
- which started as a rather harebrained
idea (we have a lot of those!) and under
the guidance of our volunteer, Wai, is
turning into quite an event.... we’re all
going to be SUPER MODELS. We’ll also
be holding some really fun and inspiring
activities on International Women’s Day
on 08 March to fundraise for a local
women’s refuge.
THE STORY
BEHIND THE PAINTING
This oil painting has been referred
to by a number of different titles,
including ‘The Shipwreck - After a
Typhoon’, ‘Approaching Storm’, ‘After
the Storm’, ‘Shipwreck at Sunrise’ or
‘The Sky Which Notices All Makes
No Disclosure’. The last title is written
on the back of the painting in pencil,
probably by the artist, John Brett.
Confusion surrounded the true title of
the painting until 2003, when Charles
Brett, grandson of John Brett, visited
the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery &
Museum. He immediately recognised
the painting as the ‘missing’ Brett
painting, ‘Christmas Morning, 1866’.
A regular exhibitor at the Royal
Academy, Brett’s (1830-1902) early
work was strongly infl uenced by the
Pre-Raphaelite movement and he was
well acquainted with members of the
Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
In fact, Brett is deemed to be the
‘John’ in Christina Rossetti’s 1860 poem
‘No thank You, John’. William Rossetti
identifi ed his sister’s suitor as “the
marine painter John Brett, who... had
appeared to be somewhat smitten by
Christina”
Under the guidance of John Ruskin,
Brett began to paint coastal scenes of
England, Scotland and Wales. Ruskin
believed that artists should depict
earth, water and air, as these elements
were the manifestation of God’s
creation.
www.listedmagazine.com
By the 1890’s, Brett had become
successful and somewhat eccentric.
He bought one of London’s fi rst
centrally heated houses and
discouraged his seven children from
wearing clothes indoors.
Research has revealed that the
spectacular sunrise which features
in the painting was witnessed by
Brett from the coast of Holyhead on
Christmas Day, 1866. The shipwreck
is probably based on an actual event,
the wreck of the steamship ‘London’
in January 1866. The boat was sailing
to Australia but got into diffi culty in
the Bay of Biscay, shortly after leaving
Plymouth Harbour. Out of 86 crew and
153 passengers, only 16 crew members
and three second-class passengers
survived. All the survivors were men,
the women and children lost with the
ship.
The painting has recently returned
to The Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and
Museum following extensive treatment
by a specialist conservator.
You can fi nd out more of the story
behind Brett’s Christmas Morning
1866 at a special Gallery Talk by
Dr. Christiana Payne on Saturday 1
Ray Mears Goes Walkabout
Ray Mears journeys through the wilderness of
the Australian Outback with survival experts
to learn about the people, the wildlife and the
culture of this extraordinary land. These are
journeys that encompass many of the themes
of Ray’s work - discovery, the natural world,
indigenous culture and adventure. For Ray,
this is the only way to promote understanding
and learning, as well as a chance to share his
trademark survival knowledge and wilderness
tips.
choice
Resistance by Owen Mears
It is 1944, Germany has invaded Britain, and
young farmer’s wife Sarah Lewis wakes to
fi nd her husband has disappeared, along with
all of the men from her remote Welsh village.
A German patrol arrives in the valley, its
presence a mystery. Sarah begins a faltering
acquaintance with the patrol’s commanding
offi cer, Albrecht, and discovers the purpose
of the mission - to claim an extraordinary
medieval art treasure that lies hidden in the
valley.
Tomorrow by Graham Swift
On a midsummer’s night Paula lies awake.
Mike, her husband of 25 years, is asleep
beside her and her two teenage children, Nick
and Kate, are sleeping in nearby rooms. The
next day, she knows, will defi ne all their lives.
As morning approaches, Paula recalls the
years before and after her children were born.
Her story is both a celebration of love and a
moving acknowledgement of the fear of loss,
the fragilities, illusions and secrets on which
even our most intimate sense of self can rest.
interview
We love it when actors get
serious. A breakthrough role
in gritty London gangster fl ick
Layer Cake, sporting not much more than
a lacy set of suspenders and a smile is
certainly one way to get you to the silver
screen. But is an off-screen romance with
Alfi e co-star Jude Law, a tabloid breakup
and a series of fi lmic fl ops (Casanova,
Factory Girl) enough to keep you there?
Erm, if you’re Sienna Miller, it appears the
answer is yes.
Sienna Miller’s never been known for
taking on the roles that stimulate your
grey matter most. Her patented pout
and tousled blonde bed hair make her a
stronger contender for centrefolds rather
than centre stage, her personal life has
often been subjected to tabloid scrutiny,
and comparisons between the romantic
dalliances of her and her characters
are frequently made. So does this act as
a hindrance when the meaty fi lm roles
come along? “I think as an actor, if you
can retain a level of anonymity, then
people are more likely to believe the
characters you’re playing,” says Sienna.
“The more people think they know about
your private life, the harder it is for them
to see you as anything but you when they
go and see a fi lm.”
In Interview, Sienna plays Katya, a young
actress who becomes the subject of
older journalist Pierre’s fascination during
the interview process. The parallels
coursing between the fi lms themes and
Sienna’s personal life are very apparent
to her. “Obviously, the circumstances
are similar,” she says. “She’s an actress.
I’m an actress. She’s known more by
reputation than for her fi lms and I think
that’s something I can defi nitely relate to,
but she’s actually complex, layered and
manipulative and fascinating.”
The real intrigue about Interview is the
intimacy that positively radiates between
Katya and Pierre – it’s a relationship
Sienna can’t associate with her own
media encounters. “I’ve done interviews
where I have felt totally taken advantage
of and felt really unhappy about the
outcome. I have had some journalists who
are absolutely completely disinterested
in any opinion that I may have but are
unashamedly content to ask things that I
would fi nd embarrassing to ask someone I
didn’t know. That’s just a lack of respect.”
Does this put Sienna off interviewing at
all? “I think that journalism is a really
important medium that gets abused, and
therefore has a bad reputation,” she says.
“I’m more astute now than I was and am
better at defl ecting things, and I’m much
better now at saying ‘Actually, that’s none
of your business!’”
“ ”
Interview was written and directed
by its leading man Steve Buscemi.
Filming opposite a commercial and indie
heavyweight like Steve Buscemi isn’t
something many actors can boast about
after a mere few years in the business,
but Sienna found it less intimidating than
she thought. “It’s a great fi lm and it’s the
fi rst time I’ve done something where I
can appreciate it as a piece of art and
as his vision, because it was two of us
and because we were not creatively
restricted.”
www.listedmagazine.com
So now she’s tackled substance, do the
naked days of Layer Cake still resonate
the same for Sienna? “There was such a
focus on me, and who I really was, that I
think it got more attention than if someone
else was just starting out,” she says. “A
huge amount of focus was on that fi lm
— but I don’t regret it. It was a great
movie.
“Because I was famous before I had a
fi lm come out, I was tabloid fodder and
someone’s girlfriend before I was an
actress. So it’s a slow process trying to
break down those preconceptions and be
taken seriously as an actor - hopefully, I’ll
get there! It might just take a bit longer for
me.” ▙ Words by Bonnie Redfern
Interview (15) is available on DVD on 25
DETECTIVES
the other day we were in
Exeter and we all thought it
was Bristol! Matt kept saying
“Thanks, Bristol!” and it
wasn’t until after we got off
stage that we realised.
With the release of their latest single I Found Out hitting the charts in its fi rst week
of release, and a national tour selling out weeks in advance, life is rosy for the Pigeon
Detectives. Although somewhat dazed and confused from the rigours of their hectic
schedule (read: hungover!), Romin Aliabadi managed to snare songwriter Ryan Wilson
for a brief, post-soundcheck natter:
So, a sellout national tour and singles and releasing a single. I think they are the venues, audiences - are about the same.
hitting the shops... has this been your best bit of promo a band can do... our fi rst
year?
single we weren’t expecting too much Do you guys have to keep yourself fi t
Yeah, this is our fi rst time in Bournemouth from, so we only made 500 copies, but for a tour or do you live the rock n roll
and it’s strange visiting a new town and that sold out in a day. And it went on from lifestyle?
having these massive crowds. This is our there really.
We get hammered! Actually, I picked up
third tour but defi nitely the biggest. Every
a cold at the start of this tour and I can’t
time we go on tour they get a bit longer Do you think you benefi ted from starting seem to shake it off so I’m a bit worse for
and a bit harder... It’s good though. out in a big city like Leeds, as opposed to wear. But no we get hammered on tour.
a small place like Bournemouth? [Smiles wryly] Yeah. We do.
How did the band start out?
Yeah, we started out playing The
Well, we’ve been gigging together now [legendary Leeds venue] Cockpit and built Where do you enjoy playing the most?
for about the last three to four years. But up our audience there. But it’s the same This tour, Dundee. Loud crowd.
we’ve all known each other since we in every city, it’s hard to get a foothold. Nottingham is really good as well. The
were about six years old, went to school Like in Leeds, sure you can go out any worst thing is I can never remember
together, the lot.
night of the week and see one of about 20 where we are. We’ve been on tour for
bands, but the chances of them being any about seven weeks and you just forget
So what was the turning point for you good are actually quite slim. And it kinda what day it is and what’s going on. If you
guys?
puts people off... it’s not like you’re gonna are in a major town it’s okay, but the other
I think last year when we supported Dirty go out and stumble across the Kaiser day we were in Exeter and we all thought
Pretty Things on tour - that really got the Chiefs. Whilst your chances of getting it was Bristol! Matt [vocalist] kept saying
ball rolling, managing to get some of their somewhere might be bigger in a big city, “Thanks, Bristol!” and it wasn’t until after
fans on board and listening to us. That the ratios of good stuff to rubbish – bands, we got off stage that we realised.
interview
ALISON MOYET
After a career spanning 25 years, Alison Moyet, explains to
Bonnie Redfern why now she feels better than ever
Your sixth album, The Turn was released
in October. What is it about?
It’s not so much about what it’s about
– it’s a group of songs that I wanted to
write that would translate really well to
stage, so you can deconstruct all of the
songs down to just a voice and a guitar
and they’d still hold shape. They’re songs
that are structured around melody and
intelligent lyrics, more from 40 years of
living than 20 years of living.
So you’re putting a lot of life experience
into your music now?
Yes, and observation too. There’s still
the same sense of passion and the same
sense of sorrow, but there’s a resilience
that you don’t necessarily feel when
you’re young.
When you’re fi rst writing your songs tend
to be about projection, how you imagine
sex and romance to be. How you want it
to be as opposed to the reality of what
these things are after having lived it.
You’re far more able to tell it how it is and
know how it is rather than just imagine
how it is.
How do you think you’ve developed as a
performer?
I’ve certainly got a more varied tone and
after writing for 25 years, stylistically
there are a lot of different things that
have gone on for me – there’s more
variety in the material I perform. Because
I can sing bigger and louder doesn’t
mean I should do it all the time. It’s about
knowing when to hold back as much as
knowing when to give out. I think I’m a
very good live performer, and they’re very
passionate live events now.
Some people might call your latest
album release and forthcoming tour a
comeback – do you feel like you ever
went away?
No not really, over the last fi ve years
I’ve been busier than I have at any time
of my career. In 25 years you’re going to
have some time where you’re top of the
agenda as far as the media’s concerned
and other times when you’re not very
important.
Do you see yourself singing and
performing for years to come?
No, I never know, I always wonder if I
www.listedmagazine.com
“
I can cope with
diminishing audiences
but I can’t cope with a
diminishing ability
”
can feel like doing it the next year. But
what I can say without a shadow of a
doubt is that I’m a better singer now than
I was three years ago, and I was a better
singer then than I was three years before
that – as long as I’m on an upwards
trajectory creatively, then I shall carry
on. When I feel like I’m coming over the
other end then I’ll knock it on the head. I
can cope with diminishing audiences but
I can’t cope with a diminishing ability.
So you didn’t envisage such a long
career at the start?
I never had great ambitions. Everything
I aspired to do, I outdid in reality. I never
caught up with it or expected it to last as
long.
What does 2008 hold for you?
I’ve got more touring to do - I’m going to
Europe. I’m booked for the next 3 years
but I have a deal with my manager that
he’s not to tell - If I see a really long, full
diary it intimidates me!
interview
BOYS
II
MEN
The late eighties saw four young men with big aspirations sneak backstage at a New
Edition concert to amaze band member Micheal Bivins with an a cappella version of New
Edition’s Can You Stand the Rain. Two decades on and fi gures show Boys II Men to be the
most successful male R&B vocal group on record. Listed’s Ellie Cowley catches up with
Wanya Morris . . .
Twenty years in the music industry for
you guys, how has it changed?
The music industry has changed
tremendously because times change,
you know? And it’s really up to the artist
to stay in with the times and conform or
maintain what they feel and believe in and
try to move on like that. What Boys II Men
tried to do was maintain our integrity and
wait till it comes back around because it’s
all a circle.
How’s it been for you to be in the industry
for so long?
Wow. It’s been incredible. It’s been a
rocky road; there’s been ups and downs.
But we believe only the strong survive
(chuckles) we’ve been fi ghting! Defi nitely.
Like with the Hip Hop era, getting in
where we fi t in.
Does music come fi rst in your life? If so,
can we be nosey and ask what comes
second?
Actually, I couldn’t say that music comes
fi rst. I’d have to say God comes fi rst,
because he’s the author of all things. Then
I would say it’s family, and then it’s music
because I use music to take care of my
family.
How has being spiritual mixed with a
‘rock n’roll’ kind of lifestyle? Has that
been diffi cult?
It hasn’t, ‘cause we don’t consider
ourselves rock n’ rollers
In terms of the music scene?
Yeah, we don’t do a lot of the things that
the so called ‘music industry people’ do.
We’ve never been that type of group. I
mean, we like to have fun. Even being
spiritual you can have fun if y’know what
I’m sayin, you don’t have to be a stick in
the mud to believe in God. The thing is to
keep moving, allow yourself to do the right
thing, the moralistic thing, and have fun.
So you’ve been pretty good role models
for your fans?
Yeah, that too, but I don’t think it’s a
conscious role model type thing. I think
it’s we know where we came from, and
we want everyone that came up with
us to be proud of us. We just don’t have
the kinda mindset to be doing the Amy
Winehouse thing.
Does Boys II Men still sound like an apt name?
I think it does, because the name
simply means growth. . . each day we
32 www.listedmagazine.com
continuously learn and in wisdom we
continuously grow. No one can tell a man
when he’ll become a man unless they’ve
gained all the knowledge there is in the
world, and you are always ever learning.
Where do you see Boys II Men going in
the future?
I see us consistent, just maintaining and
doing shows consistently. . . maybe get
a room in Vegas, making money and
hanging out, like the Rat Pack!
Did you envisage the group being
together this long when you fi rst started?
No, no not at all, all we were trying to
be was a singing local group who liked
to sing to get girls. . . this was actually a
fl uke, you couldn’t have forecasted this
one!
Speaking of girls, what’s it like being an
international sex symbol?
Ah well, if I knew I was an international
sex symbol, I’d fi nd out what it was like...
MAJOR NEW
FESTIVAL FOR SOUTHAMPTON
Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe and rapper Dizzie Rascal are set to appear at a major
new festival for the South, taking place in Eastleigh’s Stoneham Park on 3 May.
Listed caught wind of the news just as went to press, and are told other big
names are on the table.
The FreeRange Festival is the
collaborative effort of Brighton
Fringe/Loop Festival co-ordinator
Anthony Prior, De La Soul and Mr
Scruff promoter Neil Homer, and
founder of Southampton’s Orange
Rooms, Gary Bennetton.
‘With an eclectic mix of live music
and the best DJs in the country, this
is going to be an unforgettable event,’
Gary told Listed. ‘As a team we’ve
been bringing great music to the
central South Coast for past decade,
so it makes sense that we should get
together and make some noise all
under the same roof!’
The festival starts at 2pm on
Saturday 3rd May – the Bank Holiday
Weekend, so revellers have plenty of
time to recover! With a main stage,
big top, bar tents, food concessions
and a fun fair, it promises to be a
great event.
Entry is restricted to over 18s only,
and tickets are limited to 5,000, so if
you want to become a part of South
Coast music history, book now.
NEW GAY
SINGLES EVENTS
Tapas, murder mysteries, and cocktail chic – the gay
scene just keeps getting better!
Traditionally the South Coast gay scene
has very much centred around bars
and clubs, which is great if you’re into
partying, but what if you’re not? If you left
your dancing shoes in the last millennium,
and spend your Friday nights at home
with Graham Norton and takeaway,
you’re not alone!
Wouldn’t it be great if you could go out
for tapas, learn how to make cocktails, or
even play at Sherlock Holmes at a murder
mystery night, knowing that everyone
else there is gay? That’s the idea behind
the newly launched Gay Singles That
Mingle (GSTM), an extension to the
straight singles events brand that has
taken the South Coast by storm.
The events are organised by marketing
director Darren Northeast, in conjunction
with Singles that Mingle founder Nicky
Payne. For Darren, GSTM is about
building friendships in a no-pressure
environment.
“We’re targeting a specifi c community
group that isn’t at the moment
accommodated for,” explains Darren.
“Whether doctors or lecturers,
tradesmen or students – we want
anybody to come along regardless of age,
background or where they are in life.”
The events are taking place in a whole
range of venues, but not ‘gay venues’
because the point is not about being gay,
says Darren, but meeting like-minded
people. In particular, Darren hopes the
events will attract those who aren’t
so comfortable about entering the gay
scene, or are still unsure about their
sexuality.
“If a person was thinking about coming
out and went straight into gay scene it
could scare them to death,” he laughs.
“It can feel so young and in your face,
whereas this is very laid-back.”
And how about romance, will there be
any (civil) wedding bells we wonder?
“It would be great to see relationships
develop,” remarks Darren. “It’s happened
with the straight STM events, so who’s
to say it won’t here. However, the point
isn’t about dating, but doing things you
FILMS
BY BONNIE REDFERN
It seems nuclear fallout couldn’t hold back the 2008
Academy Awards. Despite the ongoing writers strike,
several hundred metres of red carpet is getting the old
shake and vac as we speak...
Complications and contingency
plans aside, this year the
Oscars were looking rather
interesting. If like me, you’re
still breathlessly besotted with
the performance of a certain
Mr Depp, you’ll no doubt have
been rooting for his Best Actor
win to come to fruition. Sweeney
Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet
Street brought the Broadway
musical of the same name to the
big screen with a dark grandeur
only the Depp and Burton duo
could master, while Helena
Bonham Carter added her own
brand of wicked intensity to
proceedings.
However, no amount of doeeyed
gazes at Johnny could get
Helena a nomination, as
Best Actress looked set to be
bestowed upon the fantastic
Ellen Page. Her performance
38 www.listedmagazine.com
in the controversial Hard
Candy seemed like a tough act
to follow, but playing a selfassured,
pregnant teenager
in indie fl ick Juno has proven
she’s no-one trick pony. It also
earned this off-beat comedy a
Best Director nomination for
Jason Reitman, as well as Best
Original Screenplay and Best
Film nominations - alongside
the critics’ favourite No Country
For Old Men, and Keira Knightly
drama Atonement.
Cate Blanchett did a double
and notched up nominations
in both Best Actress and
Supporting Actress categories,
for Elizabeth: The Golden Age
and I’m Not There respectively.
At the time of going to press, this
writer put money on the latter
turning into 13 inches of gold.
But for every golden glimmer
of glory, there’s the irritating,
head-scratching choices
that make you wonder if the
Academy even watches movies
at all. American Gangster
and the terrible Transformers
received nods from art and
special effects credits, while
Michael Moore’s bloated Sicko
was up for a Best Documentary
Feature gong. Now surely this
is just encouraging the man to
think he’s actually a credible
fi lmmaker? Get the stretchers
ready – he’ll need one for that
ego...
COMING SOON
THE EDGE OF HEAVEN (18)
Due 22 February
Despite its seemingly benevolent
title, this fi lm delves into darkly
cathartic territories. A Turkish
immigrant widens the gap between
himself and his son Nejat when he
hires a prostitute to live with him
and remedy his loneliness. Unknown
to Nejat, a series of life-changing
events are waiting just around the
corner.
THE 11TH HOUR (TBC)
Due 15 February
Corrupt congressmen are getting
a break from Michael Moore as
Leonardo Di Caprio turns part
narrator, part eco-warrior for this
feature-length documentary. But
let’s be honest, Michael Moore not
making fi lms is probably far better
for the environment and everyone
concerned.
THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL (15)
Due 07 March
It’s Tudor handbags at dawn as the
Boleyn girls battle for the affections
of Henry VIII. Boasting Natalie
Portman, Scarlett Johannson and
Eric Bana in its leading roles, this
could well be the most glamorous
(and factually inaccurate) history
lesson you ever had – think if Britney
Spears started teaching sex ed. Cast
aside though, this looks set to give
traditional period romances a run
for their shillings (or Tudor tender
equivalent)!
10,000 BC (TBC)
Due 14 March
It’s not often you put the word
‘prehistoric’ in front of the word
‘epic’ and come to a half-way
watchable movie. Probably not likely
to change this trend, 10,000 BC will
be lumbering its way towards you
like an Arnold Schwarzenegger
campaign trail.
THE GAME PLAN (U)
Due 07 March
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson takes
on the end of the world in this
high-octane, low-substance action
thriller. Think guns, think explosions,
think token females and gratuitous
nudity... or think schmaltz and happy
endings. It’s actually a comedy about
an NFL quarterback who discovers
he has an 8 year old daughter. Now
you really want to see it, don’t you?
BE KIND REWIND (12A)
Due 22 February
Don’t you just hate it when your brain
becomes magnetised, ruining every
single video tape in your best mate’s
rental store thus disheartening
your most loyal elderly renter and
forcing you to re-fi lm every movie
and infringe on numerous copyrights
www.listedmagazine.com
in order to keep her happy? Yeah,
Jerry (Jack Black) hates it too.
This comedy offhandedly endorses
slapstick but remains contemporary
in its approach. One for those of you
who like your humour a little more
imaginative, methinks. Directed by
the inspired Michel Gondry.
UNTRACEABLE (15)
Due 29 February
Diane Lane is an FBI agent hunting
down a seemingly untraceable killer
in this tense thriller. Also starring
Billy Burke, Joseph Cross and a
whole load of other actors that rolled
right out of B movie town.
WANTED (TBC)
Due 14 March
Based on the Mark Miller (yeah,
I’ve not heard of him either) graphic
novels, Wanted tells the story of Wes
(James McAvoy), an interminable
nobody with no ambition and
more apathy than a student voter.
When he meets the sexy, gunwielding
Fox (Angelina Jolie), he’s
shortly inducted into the top secret
Fraternity and rapidly becomes a
defender of justice. Morgan Freeman
co-stars, but we bet he wished he
didn’t.
BROWN
DERREN
From card tricks in cafes to live stunts on stage, Derren Brown shows Listed his
poker face.
It’s his manipulative ability to be playful,
charming and shocking at the same
time that has won Derren Brown a
legion of admirers. His stunt with Robbie
Williams in the last series of Trick of the
Mind, in which he graphically pierced
the pop star’s arms with needles, drew
tabloid headlines. In the same series
Derren engineered a staged out-ofbody
experience, and helped an elderly
lady with no knowledge of poker to
come second in a televised poker
tournament. His brand of psychological
illusion fuses elements of magic,
suggestion, psychology, misdirection and
showmanship.
But what’s refreshing about Brown is
his honest approach to what he does.
He cheerfully reveals that he can’t read
people’s minds or commune with the
afterlife – his skill is to make it look like
he can.
“I am often dishonest in my techniques
but I’m always honest about my
dishonesty,” explains Derren. “The most
important thing is to try and get out there
and perform for real people. Finding a
presentational style which is natural to
you and sets you apart is a good aim to
have, but that doesn’t come quickly or
easily for most.”
Born in Croydon in 1971, Derren traces
“ ”
I’m often dishonest in my
techniques – but I’m always
honest about my dishonesty
his interest in magic and psychological
techniques to childhood, but it was only
later at Bristol University, where he
studied Law and German, that he started
to take it seriously.
“I fi rst performed hypnosis shows around
universities during and after my studies,
and in fact grew the laughable goatee in
an attempt to look a bit older and more
mysterious than my fellow students!”
he laughs. But after graduating, Derren
abandoned a career in Law and
40 www.listedmagazine.com
concentrated on developing his skills at
psychological magic. He was able to pay
the bills by performing in cafes, bars and
behind the local Laser Quest.
In 1999 Channel 4 came knocking, and
Derren made his fi rst TV series, Derren
Brown: Mind Control. He’s since gone
on a national tour, released DVDs and
performed tabloid teasing stunts on live
TV - Derren Brown Plays Russian Roulette
drew in over 3 million viewers.
“The biggest challenge is to keep the
work fresh and vital,” says Derren. “It’s
easy to explain why someone might not
like magic - it can be poorly presented,
surrounded by naffness, and often
amounts to little more than childish
attempts to fool you. I guess it’s largely to
escape those associations that I’ve gone
the route I have.” ▙
Derren brings the second leg of his
2007 sell out-show, Derren Brown Mind
Control: An Evening of Wonders, to the
Poole Lighthouse on March 28 and 29.

THE TWANG
Gritty indie rockers The Twang had one of the best years imaginable in 2007 –
but soon the fi ve piece are leaving Birmingham and hitting the coast. Listed’s
Abby Tayleure talks to frontman Saunders to fi nd out more.
The Twang formed in 2004 and released
their debut album ‘Love It When I Feel
Like This’ in 2007, but what were those
years in between like when they were
trying to make it? ‘We were just grafting
really like everyone else” explains
Saunders “Doing your usual job and then
jamming in the evening - it’s just the same
as everyone else isn’t it? You’ve just got
this extra bit on the side instead of going
down the local boozer.”
Like many indie groups before them
who were in the spotlight, their fi rst
year in the public eye was a whirlwind.
They headlined the John Peel stage at
Glastonbury and won the NME’s Radar
award. “We did loads in 2007,” says
Saunders. “We weren’t expecting to
headline Glastonbury or anything like
that! We just want to write some good
tunes this year. We’re writing at the
moment so we’re hoping that we’ve
got a good record, if we do that then
everything should kind of fall into place.”
Despite being busy with the band
Saunders still has time to appreciate
other artists. “I’m looking forward to
Elbow’s new album, and if Jamie T brings
a new record out this year. As far as new
bands go I’m really looking forward to
The Courteneers album, too.” Saunders
is passionate about music and loves
being in the band but what does he wish
he knew about the music industry before
he entered it? “I’m just enjoying what
I’m doing at the moment. There’s some
rubbish parts about it like how you don’t
get as much time to spend with your
family. But most of the bad things have
good ones to outweigh them.”
www.listedmagazine.com
“
We weren’t expecting to
headline Glastonbury or
anything like that! We just
want to write some good
tunes this year.
The band played alongside The Young
Knives and The Holloways at the
reopening of the Opera House in June
last year, alongside Radio One DJ Jo
Whiley and The Futureheads. But now
they’re set to return to Bournemouth
on 18 February at The Old Firestation,
Saunders is eager for some Southern
hospitality. “It’s really nice down there
in Bournemouth, we didn’t really get a
chance to look around so hopefully we
will do this time...”
BURNING RUBBER IN THE LAND OF
THE RISING SUN!
Three Japanese manufacturers have
launched show-stopping fl agships:
Subaru has its all-new Impreza WRX
STI, Mitsubishi has its Lancer Evo X
and Nissan has unleashed its jawdropping,
giant-killing GTR. Not one
of these cars is yet available in the
UK, so the only way to get near them
was to head to Japan. Therefore,
I was thrilled to get a scoop on
the Scooby by driving a gun-metal
Subaru WRX STI in Nagoya this
Christmas.
The previous STI was inspired by
the rally cars made famous by stars
including the much-lamented Colin
McRae, so this new one has a lot
to live up to. While the UK version
is destined to be a 2.5 litre, the
Japanese version’s turbocharged
2.0-litre four-cylinder engine
produces just over 300 bhp. I haven’t
space to describe all that is new,
but one stand-out feature was the
SI Drive with 3 settings: Intelligent
(economy), Sport and Sport Sharp,
which does what is says on the can
and blasts you up to Warp Speed in
the blink of an eye. Thankfully, the
standard-fi t Brembo brakes are also
up to the job - as I discovered when I
had to brake suddenly: we pulled up
with barely a squeak (although my
companions went a little pale!). The
Subaru fl atters your driving skills but
still keeps you safe. Expect to see
lots of them on UK roads!
What two things do Body Wraps,
amazing gift for that special woman in
your life, yes your mother, and more
amazingly, they are all available to book at
Now before you start panicking, you still
have a few weeks left before Mothering
Sunday (2nd March for those who need
a gentle reminder). Imagine the surprise
on your mother’s face when she opens
her card and fluttering to the floor is a PH
Therapies gift voucher to redeem against
any of our luxurious treatments such as:-
Body Wrap – a layered treatment of
exfoliation, re-hydration with minerals and
TREAT YOUR MUM
ON MOTHER’S DAY
moisturiser leaving your skin feeling soft,
smooth and with a renewed radiance in
time for Spring.
Aromatherapy Massage – our therapist
will blend a unique oil specially for you
which will not only help to unlock tension
in your muscles but also to calm and
headaches whereas jasmine can help to
soothe inflamed skin and reduce anxiety.
Reflexology – a fantastic experience
MONEY TALK
You could save yourself
£1,000s with the right
fi nancial advice, as
Ali Wood discovers
“
With the right
fi nancial advice
our future should
be plain sailing.
Scared by fi nance? Me, too. The
last time I received fi nancial advice
was when my mortgage lender
congratulated me on my engagement,
swiftly followed by a Booker prizewinning
depiction of my life as a
widow...(would you be needing life
insurance with that madam?). The time
before that I was in school uniform,
working out how many GSCE A-grades
would get me a pool table. So, with
scant fi nancial knowledge built on
the foundations of threats and bribes,
I wondered, as I approach my 30th
birthday, what it would be like to take
independent fi nancial advice.
I contacted Lewis Innovative
Investment, which provides
independent advice on everything from
investment and savings to pensions,
life assurance and mortgages. I
invited them to our home to look at our
fi nances, to see how we could get rich
quick...or at least learn to be a bit wiser
with our savings.
Our objectives, I explained over a cup
of tea, were to build wealth in the form
of investment properties and take
advantage of tax reliefs and savings.
James also added that he’d like to retire
at 45 on an income of £50,000. Nice...but
realistic?
Lee and Steve assessed our attitude to
risk, looked at our current savings and
investments, and discussed topics we’d
so far managed to avoid such as wills
and pensions (surely we’re never going
to get old and die?) Here’s what we
discovered:
Protection
I don’t have life and critical illness
cover, which could be tricky now that
I run my own business, should the
worst happen. It would cost James and
me £37 a month for joint cover, which
would pay out £75,000 on diagnosis of
most critical illnesses, and £134,000
in the event of death. For comparison
purposes, we’re talking the equivalent
of Sky Sports, Broadband and Talk...
tough call.
Savings and investment
We’ve talked about raising £200,000
in the next fi ve years for a business
venture. We wondered if entering the
buy-to-let market might be a good way
to ‘build wealth’ before then. Steve and
Lee pointed out that this would mean
48 www.listedmagazine.com
”
paying interest on the entire amount we
borrowed to fund it. A good alternative
would be to use cash ISAs, and raise
capital when we need it, against equity
on our own property, possibly switching
to interest-only.
Tax savings
This came as quite a surprise. James
has no pension, but his salary package
means that he could benefi t greatly by
taking one out. We learned that if he
were to credit a portion of his earnings
to a pension, he could obtain over
£1,000 a year in tax relief for the cost of
£1,600... meaning more money for that
Caribbean SAGA cruise!
As for myself, I have £6,000 in a Money
Purchase pension scheme where my
previous employer matched my own
contributions and the funds were
invested by Fidelity. Steve and Lee
approved of the scheme but suggested
I shifted the balance of the portfolio
in line with my current attitude to risk,
which is more conservative than it was
six years ago.
Wills
Steve and Lee revisited the topic of
wills decidedly more tactfully that my
mortgage lender had. Now that James
is retiring on £50k a year, I felt this was
a much sunnier proposition.
Conclusion
Steve and Lee started with our goals
and worked backwards exploring ways
to help us achieve them. We learnt so
much more than we could go into detail
here, and in the 15-page report that
arrived the next week, we discovered
ways to save and invest, that I’m sure
will prove useful for life. They spoke
English, not legalese, and I even
enjoyed reading the report, which isn’t
bad for a fi nance-phobic!
This review and the accompanying
fi gures are in respect of Ali and
James’ situation only and should not
be taken in a wider context. If you’d
like a fi nancial review, contact
Stephen or Lee, at Lewis Innovative
Investment, 41 Commercial Road,
FRIDAY 29 FEBRUARY
SILVER BEATLES
This polished tribute act return once again
to The Brook and bring their now infamous
costume changes, brilliant versions of
old and new Beatles songs and onstage
energy to the Southampton venue. For
every generation of Beatles fan, from the
ones who remember their early days to
the teens that learnt about the band from
their parents, this tribute act is certain to
please.
FRIDAY 07 MARCH
THE GRANDMOTHERS OF
INVENTION
If you shouldn’t teach your grandmother
to suck eggs, it’s safe to say you defi nitely
shouldn’t try and teach the Grandmothers
of Invention how to rock out. Consisting
of original and former members of the
Mothers of Invention – otherwise known
as Frank Zappa’s lot – these aged rockers
are still capable of tearing it up. Even if
these guys are getting old, their riffs are
defi nitely not.
MONDAY 10 MARCH
STIFF LITTLE FINGERS
Belfast punk band Stiff Little Fingers
formed in 1977 and are still touring over 30
years on. Known for mixing old favourites
and new material at their gigs, the night
promises to be nostalgic yet fresh. A
typically turbulent rock and roll history
including splitting up and reforming in the
1980s and multiple band members leaving
and joining hasn’t stopped this world
famous band putting on a brilliant live
show every time they play.
HIGHLIGHTS
BY ELLIE COWLEY
FRIDAY 29 FEBRUARY
Ezio + support
What better way to spend a leap year
than celebrating the rarest of calendar
days down at Kyps with Ezio and Booga,
the most explosive acoustic guitar duo of
our time. Explosive acoustic? It may be
true these two words are none too often
welded together, but Ezio Lundei and
Mark ‘Booga’ Fowell defy the unwritten
musical laws of old by fusing a variety
of sounds from jazz to blues to rock,
even stretching to a little fl amenco. All
performed with plenty of panache and
wit ‘uncensored’ enough to make Russell
Brand blush.
THURSDAY 13 MARCH TO
SATURDAY 15 MARCH
The Great Pretender
The Great Pretender is back again (and
again and again)! So all those who
meant to see the closest thing to Freddie
Mercury our era’s got but never made
it last month, you have by the grace of
Mr Kyps been given a second, third and
fourth chance as the Great Pretender
once again takes the stage at the Opera
House this March. And for all those who
hoped Mother’s Day might take care of
itself, this one would make a smasher of
an early Mother’s Day gift for your Mam.
She loves a bit of Freddie Mercury.
EASTER SUNDAY 23 MARCH
Dirty DC
It’s possible Dirty DC haven’t read that
bit about Sunday and resting in the most
famous book since forever began. Or if
they have, chances are they overlooked
that bit. Either way, Sunday or no, these
boys rock HARD. Word is ‘you’ll go
in wondering how these guys, these
pretenders, these frauds; how could
they possibly match AC/DC? You’ll leave
wondering how AC/DC could ever live up
to Dirty DC’.
CHARITY OF
THE MONTH
by
Fiona Julian
HELP FOR EATING DISORDERS
As Eating Disorder week approaches, Fiona Julian takes a look at support
group SWEDA
Have you been to a public loo recently? If so, you may have noticed some
striking posters by SWEDA, the Somerset and Wessex Eating Disorders
Association. It might seem like an odd place to pin up a poster, but if
you’re one of the 1.15 million people in the UK carrying the secret of an
eating disorder, the loo can be the one public place where you face your
demons.
Jess Griffi ths who represents the group explains, “SWEDA, is a user-led,
pro-recovery, registered charity based on the principles of self-help. I
suffered from both anorexia and bulimia and am here to help others who
are going through what I suffered. To show them there is hope and that
they don’t need to suffer alone.”
Jess spends her time visiting schools and groups. Her passion is to see
people have self-worth and to recover from this debilitating illness. Let’s
face it, an alcoholic can escape a drink, but if food is tormenting you,
then you can’t escape it for a day or take a trip to avoid it. And only other
sufferers can really understand what you’re going through.
SONJA STEFANOVIC
AGE: 21.
NATIONALITY: GERMAN
The fi rst in a series of short
interviews with members of the
international community living or
studying on the south coast of
England.
Could you tell us why you are
here in Bournemouth?
I’m studying English here and
I’m doing an internship to gain
work experience in secretarial
skills and the offi ce environment
to complement my training in
Berlin as an “EU multi-lingual
administrative executive PA.”
What do you hope to do with
this qualifi cation?
Well, I have already found a
job in Germany and after I have
fi nished over here I will go to
work for the German foreign
offi ce in Berlin. I will be part of
the team responsible for German
embassies all over the world!
WHY DON’T YOU NIP ON IN?
Charminster’s cosmopolitan array of international restaurants, cafes and
bars has been further enhanced by a new Japanese venue, colourfully
named the Nippon Inn. Husband and wife team Steve and Yoko Exley
said “Nippon Inn, as far as we know, is Bournemouth’s fi rst ‘izakaya’ or
Japanese pub. We hope customers will want to return regularly rather
than just on special occasions”. The venue is bound to be a hit with
Bournemouth’s growing Japanese community but it should also strike a
chord with the international student population and the wider community
looking for an alternative night out. When I went along myself, the
place was buzzing, there seemed to be a really friendly atmosphere and
the food (yakitori chicken, noodle soup, pork on rice, Japanese curry,
tempura) and drinks (Asahi beer on tap, Kirin, Sapporo, sake and shochu)
brought back some happy memories of the times I have spent in Japan.
STUDENT NEWS – READ ALL ABOUT IT!
A new web portal aimed at international students studying in the
Bournemouth and Poole areas has been launched, with the aim of
providing students with advice, news, views, reviews and a fl edgling
area-wide student discount scheme. The site, which is open to all
international students (whether they are studying at Bournemouth
University, the College, the Arts Institute or one of the many British
Council-accredited language schools in the area), also aims to be a place
where international students can show off their work and stay in touch
with friends that they have made while studying in the UK. Teachers can
also submit items for publication and use the site as a free resource.
