THE TWANG
Gritty indie rockers The Twang had one of the best years imaginable in 2007 –
but soon the fi ve piece are leaving Birmingham and hitting the coast. Listed’s
Abby Tayleure talks to frontman Saunders to fi nd out more.
The Twang formed in 2004 and released
their debut album ‘Love It When I Feel
Like This’ in 2007, but what were those
years in between like when they were
trying to make it? ‘We were just grafting
really like everyone else” explains
Saunders “Doing your usual job and then
jamming in the evening - it’s just the same
as everyone else isn’t it? You’ve just got
this extra bit on the side instead of going
down the local boozer.”
Like many indie groups before them
who were in the spotlight, their fi rst
year in the public eye was a whirlwind.
They headlined the John Peel stage at
Glastonbury and won the NME’s Radar
award. “We did loads in 2007,” says
Saunders. “We weren’t expecting to
headline Glastonbury or anything like
that! We just want to write some good
tunes this year. We’re writing at the
moment so we’re hoping that we’ve
got a good record, if we do that then
everything should kind of fall into place.”
Despite being busy with the band
Saunders still has time to appreciate
other artists. “I’m looking forward to
Elbow’s new album, and if Jamie T brings
a new record out this year. As far as new
bands go I’m really looking forward to
The Courteneers album, too.” Saunders
is passionate about music and loves
being in the band but what does he wish
he knew about the music industry before
he entered it? “I’m just enjoying what
I’m doing at the moment. There’s some
rubbish parts about it like how you don’t
get as much time to spend with your
family. But most of the bad things have
good ones to outweigh them.”
“
We weren’t expecting to
headline Glastonbury or
anything like that! We just
want to write some good
tunes this year.
The band played alongside The Young
Knives and The Holloways at the
reopening of the Opera House in June
last year, alongside Radio One DJ Jo
Whiley and The Futureheads. But now
they’re set to return to Bournemouth
on 18 February at The Old Firestation,
Saunders is eager for some Southern
hospitality. “It’s really nice down there
in Bournemouth, we didn’t really get a
chance to look around so hopefully we
will do this time...”
