HELP FOR EATING DISORDERS
As Eating Disorder week approaches, Fiona Julian takes a look at support
group SWEDA
Have you been to a public loo recently? If so, you may have noticed some
striking posters by SWEDA, the Somerset and Wessex Eating Disorders
Association. It might seem like an odd place to pin up a poster, but if
you’re one of the 1.15 million people in the UK carrying the secret of an
eating disorder, the loo can be the one public place where you face your
demons.
Jess Griffi ths who represents the group explains, “SWEDA, is a user-led,
pro-recovery, registered charity based on the principles of self-help. I
suffered from both anorexia and bulimia and am here to help others who
are going through what I suffered. To show them there is hope and that
they don’t need to suffer alone.”
Jess spends her time visiting schools and groups. Her passion is to see
people have self-worth and to recover from this debilitating illness. Let’s
face it, an alcoholic can escape a drink, but if food is tormenting you,
then you can’t escape it for a day or take a trip to avoid it. And only other
sufferers can really understand what you’re going through.
