Background to Wom en 1st
Sharon Glancy, Director, People 1st Training
Company and Founder, Women 1st
Launched in 2009 by Cherie Blair, Women
1st is an initiative from People 1st, the sector
skills council for the hospitality, leisure, travel
and tourism (HLTT) industry, to address the
significant under-representation of women in
senior director level positions.
In an industry where 60% of the workforce
is female, only 6% of board directors within
HLTT are female – half the national average
across other industries. Women 1st’s mission
is to advance women into the leadership
ranks by building a pool of talent ready for
the boardroom.
There are a number of reasons why women
are being held back from achieving their career
ambitions. Factors include irregular work hours
and the lack of available flexible and part-time
working arrangements for senior managers,
the use of more traditional working models and
practices (such as split shifts), male-dominated
organisational cultures and professional
networks, a lack of management training for
women, too few role models and a lack of
mentoring opportunities.
Independent research has clearly identified
business performance advantages to having a
more balanced senior team, not least that the
majority of purchasing decisions across the UK,
Europe and the US are made by women. A
senior team that represents its customer base
will better anticipate and meet their needs.
