6 Tuesday July 17 2018 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi News Celebrations for Burwood church ST PAUL’S Lutheran Church in Burwood will reach a significant milestone this week. The church, located on 130 Burwood Rd, is turning 30 years old on Sunday. The event will be recognised at the church’s normal Sunday 10am service. St Paul’s Lutheran was first established as a German church in 1872, on the corner of Worcester and Montreal Sts in the central city. In the mid-1980s, due to innercity development and a lack of car parking the church was under pressure to relocate. The church relocated to Burwood in December 1986 and the newly-built church was officially opened in July 1988. From the end of 2013 until early 2018, St Paul’s had been without a full-time pastor. And Haeata Community Campus students are savouring the taste. The school is one of 25 across the country to get weekly fresh bread deliveries. While students Summer Broughton-Read, 11, and Hailey Shriver, 13 (right), go to school with a packed lunch everyday, they still made the most of their free breakfast. KidsCan delivers the bread to a growing number of Kiwi kids. More than 30,000 loaves will be sent to schools this year. They are is available for all students to eat. Haeata principal Andy Kai Fong said his teachers asked for help after noticing some students were arriving at school hungry and without lunch. “Winter seems hard on many of our families. Making choices between rent, food and heating because they can’t afford all is, for some, a reality,” he said. PEGASUS POST Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Tuesday July 17 2018 7 Another Richmond shop bites the dust • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding UNFINISHED roadworks and a lack of customers has led to another business in the eastern suburbs closing. The Richmond Village Book and PostCentre closed on Friday after 13 years of business on North Avon Rd. Owner Alan Spooner said the roadworks had “basically destroyed” the store and residents had not supported the shop. “It is all very well saying on Facebook pages ‘let’s support the shops’ but they don’t . . . if the local residents had really stood up and supported we would still be open,” he said. Mr Spooner said “there are a lot of talkers” in Richmond but “not a lot of doers.” Bin Inn on Stanmore Rd has since taken over the post service. The city council started a full reconstruction of North Avon Rd in January, which has since left businesses struggling to bring customers into their stores. Pegasus Post reported in May that The Green Grocer on Stanmore Rd closed after the roadworks caused its business to decline. Mr Spooner said even after the traffic lights were removed, trading had not improved. “I just can’t afford to keep on ploughing my own money into the business to keep it open . . . it is really sad, it used to be a good shopping centre along here,” he said. Richmond Residents’ and Business Association chairwoman Hayley Guglietta said “the truth of the matter was people weren’t going into his business.” She said she tries to support as many businesses as possible but what was offered at the shop was perhaps not needed as much anymore. “Unfortunately that is a casualty of the changing world we are living in,” Mrs Guglietta said. Bin Inn owner Laura Sing said it is difficult to know if locals are supportive of her business as people from across the city go to the shop. But she said she did not think they could survive on local customers alone. Ms Sing said Bin Inn decided to take over the post centre because it was an “essential” and basic service needed in the area. Mrs Guglietta said she would love more businesses to become involved in the association as it is hoping to work on encouraging more people to buy local. Christchurch East MP Poto Williams and Environment Canterbury representatives will be discussing the latest changes as a result of ECan’s Long Term Plan 2018-2028. ECan councillor David Caygill has confirmed he will be attending while Dr Cynthia Roberts is also expected to be at the meeting. Ms Williams said she was hoping the public will speak about public transport and what the loss of bus routes means for those living in the community. ECan confirmed last month it would combine the 135 Burwood Hospital and 150 The Palms bus routes. The 135 would no longer travel into New Brighton. •The meeting will be held at 7.30pm at St Andrew’s Anglican Church Hall, 109 Marriotts Rd, North New Brighton.
