Bid to ease
Helmores Lane
bridge issue
CHANGES WILL be made to
avoid congestion for motorists
attempting to access Harper
Ave from Helmores Lane using
the bridge.
No-stopping restrictions
may be installed at the north
approach to the Helmores Lane
Bridge to prevent vehicles parking
there and to ease turning
for motorists, who still mistakenly
try to access Harper Ave
from the bridge.
Earthquake repairs for the
bridge were completed in
early 2016 and bollards were
installed on both sides of the
bridge to restrict vehicle access.
However, of the two most
popular GPS mapping systems,
one still indicates that the
bridge is open to vehicles.
This has resulted in turning
issues when cars approach
the bridge, as vehicles have to
manoeuvre 180 deg to exit the
street.
Installing the proposed
no-stopping restrictions at the
north approach to the bridge
will prevent parking and ease
turning for residents, park users
and other motorists.
The bridge is the only surviving
19th-century timber bridge
in Christchurch and it listed as
a heritage item by city council.
Cooking meals, mowing lawns,
moving bins in and out and lending
his car are just a few ways he helps
the neighbours on his street.
He also looks after their homes
when they go away and feeds their
animals.
“I love helping people and this is
just something I’ve done all my life,”
he said.
After every earthquake, Mr
Hamilton checked up on all his
neighbours. “He is a great example
of how one person can make a
community a great place to live, and
how little acts of kindness can mean
so much to others and improve their
lives,” said his nomination.
“Each and every household
on this street has benefited from
having Ian as a neighbour . . . He
is incredibly selfless and generous
. . . and without him many people
would be lost.”
Mr Hamilton said his drive
to help people motivates him.
However, after loosing a lot in
the earthquakes, he’s even more
motivated to keep going.
“It made me realise that there’s a
lot of people out there who generally
need help and they don’t get it or
they are too afraid to ask,” he said.
Ten other recipients
received awards along with a
small gift at the ceremony held
at the Bishopdale Community
Centre.
Low-Cost Pensioner
Housing is Trust focus
For 45 years and counting, the Kenneth
F. Weaver trust inc. has been providing low
cost pensioner units for Cantabrians. located
throughout St. albans and edgeware areas,
the twenty nine units which the trust represents
were a dream of founder Kenneth F. Weaver
which became a reality.
the humble and very private community
service benefactor, the Kenneth F. Weaver
trust, inc. bears his name and shares in
the legacy of the prominent Christchurch
businessman. Maintained by a board of
experienced and supportive trustees, the trust
values its years of assistance to the dozens of
pensioners it has been able to serve.
“all those years ago, i felt a strong desire to
support pensioners throughout the city where
i’ve grown up. Having been born in rakaia
and although i have travelled the world, leaving
home at 15 to join the merchant navy, i came
back to start my family several years later.” He
shares. “then upon returning to Christchurch, i
saw a need and felt prompted to do something
about it.”
“i have worked in many industries and
became a businessman who was fortunate in
their investments and business ventures. i have
learned a lot about people and identified a way
to support them. all those years ago, i saw a
need for affordable housing in the pensioner
segment and decided to do something about it.
“i looked at the available central government
schemes and applied for some funding. there
was a lot of paperwork and many questions,
but the ministry saw the value in my goal and
helped me launch the trust. i had set up a
private trust and to this day, my understanding
is that the Kenneth F. Weaver trust inc. is the
only private trust that has been supported
through ministry channels.”
the Kenneth F. Weaver trust inc. well-earned
reputation lives by the motto – For the Benefit
of others and their goal is to offer rental security
for life.
How the unit process works is that a unit
only becomes available when a vacancy
occurs. Most of the residents have been there
for decades. Back in the late 1970’s when the
doors opened, the rent per week was $11.25.
Now forty five years later it has only risen to
$155 a week, for a single person, 1 bedroom
unit and we feel very good about the ability we
have had to maintain and keep our rental costs
as low as possible. We’re not in this to make
a big profit, but to help serve our community
while maintaining our costs.
all the trust units are well maintained, and our
residents and management team take pride in
keeping them in top condition. the gardens are
maintained by residents and a gardener.
each of the units provide one or two
bedrooms, a lounge, kitchen, laundry and
bathroom facilities.
the residents develop a close knit
community and support for each other which
provides comfort and peace of mine for each
resident. there is no medical care on site, but
the trust units have doctor rooms close by.
