THERE’S A top rugby league story on page
9 today, involving names from the past and
ones to watch for the future.
Halswell club teenagers Tanner Smith and
Cooper Te Hau are carrying on a family
friendship which spans generations.
Their grandfathers Norm Geddes and Peter Smith played with
and against each other in the 1970s, and their fathers, Arthur
Geddes and Pat Smith shared a similar friendship and rivalry on
the field.
Pat’s name is of course synonymous with Canterbury rugby
league. It’s his name on the trophy presented each year to the
winning grand-final side.
I remember following the Papanui Tigers as a kid in the 1970s,
who Norm Geddes played for. A very handy sort of player.
