It all began one Sunday afternoon
in 1995... a group of passionate
teachers, each headhunted for their
expertise, met to begin building a
school... a school that was to be
started without walls or windows
but with passion, dynamic vision
and trust. Crawford Preparatory
Sandton laid its foundations in these
strengths even before the buildings’
foundations were laid.
Once upon a time in our Media Centre...
There may have been no uniforms,
classrooms, parking, sports facilities,
bells or intercoms, but the spirit of
those teachers, parents and pupils who
embraced the Crawford vision, started
a small revolution in education. Even
though other schools laughed at our
children with their long hair, earrings
and trendy shoes, they could not deny
the spirit of Crawford. With Ronnie
de Klerk at the helm, the schooling
community soon began to understand
that Crawford was a school that valued
diversity, freedom of expression,
and the development of the child as
an individual. Offering subjects like
Drama, Music, Dance, Eco-Education,
Music and Art, ignited a passion for
education that was holistic, while
French, Greek and Hebrew were to be
the start of the global family we have
grown into today.
From bussing children between
the Killarney campus and Summer
Place, to a muddy construction site –
complete with rain – to trees shading
outdoor classrooms and parking lots
transforming into netball courts; we
have steadily grown a sanctuary in the
heart of Sandton, where magnificent
buildings and venues now stand.
