History for dessert? What fun! 

“History for Dessert” is the name of a new, fun 

storytime experience at the Historical Society of 

Haddonfield, 343 Kings Hwy E, with the Public 

Library’s Ms. Jordan. It takes place on Mon Jul 23 

from 11 to 11:30am. Register with the Public Library. 

No calories are involved, but one of the stories to 

be read, A Fine Dessert, should be especially fun for 

kids 5 to 9. In the book, author Emily Jenkins tells 

of four different families across four different time 

periods. The one thing in they have in common is: 

They are making the same dessert. The kids will 

then do a small craft.

ChildrenSong auditions 

ChildrenSong of New Jersey recently embarked 

on a concert tour to Costa Rica to participate in the 

Costa Rica for Peace International Choir Festival. 

They were the only choir representing the U.S. The

performance and educational experiences for 

young singers. The choral program is affordable by

After a pause for July, the Haddonfield Professionals 

Networking Events will resume Fri Aug 3, 

8am, at The Ends of The Earth, 6 Mechanic Street. 

Networking events are held alternatively in the 

mornings (8am, first Friday) and after work, in the 

evening (5:30pm, usually on the first Thursday). 

They are free, with no registration required. These

Pencils for a Purpose 

Central Elementary School is hosting Pencils for 

a Purpose again, for the third year. The program 

combines Central School’s supply ordering for its 

own students with an opportunity to provide school 

supplies for students in need who live close by. 

Each school supply kit ordered by a Central 

School student will have a percentage of the cost 

donated to Pencils for a Purpose. Additionally, there 

is a specially designed donation kit that you may 

purchase for $15.86.

On the third Saturday of the month, volunteers 

from Grace and First Presyterian churches help at 

the St. Wilfrid’s Episcopal Church Clinic in Camden. 

More than half the clients are Spanish-speaking. 

Health screenings are given, and food and gently 

used clothing is distributed. Would you like to help? 

Even if you can’t speak Spanish, there’s much to 

do: Packing food, sorting and distributing clothing, 

managing the Kids Corner, or heating food in the 

kitchen. You need not commit to every month. The 

clinic also needs food, clothing, and small toys and 

books for children. Funds are always welcome. For

Haddonfield Post 38 sponsors 16 high school 

students to Boys State and Girls State 

This summer, Haddonfield 

American Legion Post 38 sponsored 

five rising juniors from Haddonfield 

Memorial High School and six from 

Haddon Heights High School to Boys 

State, held at Rider University, in 

Lawrenceville, from June 17 through 

22. At the same time, two rising juniors 

from HMHS and three from HHHS 

attended Girls State at Georgian Court 

University, in Lakewood. 

Post 38 began sponsoring students 

from two high schools after Haddon 

Heights Post 149 merged with Post 38 

several years ago. 

The arrangement has resulted in 

a definite bonding of the students 

from the two high schools, except, of 

course, when they meet “on the fields 

of friendly strife.” 

Boys State and Girls State are very 

important parts of the NJ American 

Legion’s “Youth Americanism” program, 

whose purpose is to develop good 

citizens by inspiring the youth of New 

Jersey to take an active and intelligent 

interest in the operation of our state 

and nation and in the privileges and 

responsibilities of citizenship. 

Attending Boys State (H = Haddonfield): Yao Yu (H), Teo 

Lupinetti (H), Jared Bolling, Sam Tichansky (H), Connor 

Loescher, Cam Kee, Andrew Gibson, Will Ciechon, 

and Matt Barrett. Jake Cedar (H) and Mo Jishi (H) were 

involved elsewhere when this photo was taken.

Challenge grant for history 

The Historical Society of Haddonfield has received a new challenge grant 

in support of its planned new Archives Center building. Donations made in 

honor of past president Pat Lennon will be matched dollar-for-dollar. The goal 

of the community challenge is to raise enough funds to reserve one of the new 

building’s naming opportunities in Pat’s honor. 

Now 96 years old, Pat was a longtime resident of Haddonfield before moving 

to New Hampshire. She is an active supporter of the Historical Society and 

served as president for three separate terms in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. Pat 

was named Haddonfield Citizen of the Year in 1978, and has also been deeply 

involved with Symphony in C, Christ the King Catholic Church, and the Durand 

Academy, among others. Donations can be mailed to the Historical Society, and 

gifts can also be made at haddonfieldhistory.org. Donors who wish to have their 

gifts matched must designate that they are giving in Pat’s honor.

Nominate teachers, alumni 

For the past 23 years, the Haddonfield Alumni 

Society has honored 88 former students and 33 

teachers from the Haddonfield school system by 

bestowing a Lifetime Achievement Award upon 

each of them. The criteria for an individual to be 

considered for the award requires that he/she: 

1) Other than a teacher candidate, must have 

attended one of Haddonfield’s public schools, but 

not necessarily have graduated from HMHS. 2) Has 

been out of Haddonfield schools (as a student) for 

at least 20 years. 3) Has distinguished him/herself 

during the course of their adult lives. 4) If a teacher, 

must have taught within the Haddonfield public 

school system for at least 7 years. 

There is an abundance of worthy alumni and 

teachers. If you know of someone that you deem to 

be worthy of this award, speak up! The deadline for 

submitting the names of nominees to be considered 

to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award is Fri Aug 

31. Send your submissions and list your reasons

Annual Flea Market is Sep 15 

The countdown has begun for the Haddonfield 

Lions Club annual Flea Market! The 2018 Flea Market 

is on Sat Sep 15 from 9am to 2pm at One Centennial 

Square, the parking lot of the Archer & Greiner law 

firm, 33 E Euclid Ave. More than 75 vendors will be 

offering a wide assortment of new, used, vintage, 

antique, and handcrafted items. Refreshments 

– breakfast sandwiches, burgers and dogs, cooked 

by members of the Lions Club and Haddonfield 

Memorial High School Leo Club, as well as Phillystyle 

pretzels, soft drinks, and water – will be for 

sale throughout the day. The rain date is Sat Sep 22. 

All proceeds from the event benefit the 

Haddonfield Lions Foundation, which supports 

community programs and activities, and provides 

assistance to people with vision-related issues and 

those in need locally, regionally, and throughout the 

world. 

The Haddonfield Farmer’s Market will also 

be open that Saturday, as well as the alwayspopular 

Friends of the Library Book Sale and the 

Haddonfield Car Show hosted by the AACA Ankokas

Summer Book Club: ‘Grant’ 

The Historical Society’s Book Club has chosen its 

summer reading selection: Grant, by Ron Chernow. 

They’ll meet to discuss the book on Tue Sep 25 at 

7pm at Greenfield Hall, giving you all summer to 

work through Chernow’s lengthy but captivating 

biography of Ulysses S. Grant. Grant was named 

one of the best books of 2017 by Goodreads, the 

New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and others. 

Chernow “delivers a deeply researched, everythingyou-ever-wanted-to-know

Friends of Library Book Sale 

As of Sat Aug 4, the Public Library will begin 

collecting books for the annual Friends of the 

Library Book Sale, Sat Sep 15 and Sun 16. The 

Members’ Only Pre-Sale is Friday evening, Sep 14. 

Volunteers are needed to move books to the lower 

level of the Library, and to help sort the books. 

Volunteers are also needed during sale weekend 

for setup, sales, and cleanup on Sunday afternoon. 

Please stop by the library if you are interested in 

helping in August or September for this great event. 

Last year, 22,000 books were donated for the sale. 

Friends and volunteers gave about 1,000 volunteer 

hours to this fundraiser.

Choir camp at Performing Arts 

Haddonfield Center and School for the Performing 

Arts Choir Camp is Mon Aug 6 to Fri 10, 1 to 4pm 

at Grace Performance Hall. This afternoon summer 

day camp offers classes for ages 6-8 in the lower 

division, ages 9-12 in the middle division, and ages 

13-18 in the upper division. Choir Camp features 

daily rehearsals, fun singing activities, and music 

instruction that are certain to spark a passion for 

music-making in new and experienced singers. No

Food dropoffs for seniors 

Summer can mean a drop in the amount of food 

donations for charity. The Mabel Kay Senior Center 

is the year-round official food dropoff center for 

seniors in Camden County who are in dire need. 

Please donate nonperishable food items, which will 

go to screened individuals via the Senior Food Shelf 

of Camden County. You may drop off your donations 

at 24 Walnut St Monday thru Friday from 8:30am to 

3:30pm (except when Borough Hall is closed). There 

is a barrel just inside the door as you enter the 

building. Please, no perishable, opened or expired 

food items.

INTERFAITH CAREGIVERS 

begins search for new 

Executive Director 

MaryAnn Bigelow, the executive director of 

Interfaith Caregivers, will retire in September. 

On behalf of the board of trustees, president 

Robert Mirabello stated, “We were saddened to 

learn of MaryAnn’s decision to retire as she has 

been an outstanding director and spokesperson 

for the past ten years. We wish her all the best in 

her retirement and know we can count on her wise 

council in the future.” 

The board of trustees has formed a search 

committee to fill the executive director position. 

This is a full-time position with primary 

responsibility to lead the organization to carry 

out its mission, advising the board of directors, 

overseeing the delivery of services, securing grant 

and donor funding, and advancing the profile of 

the organization throughout the Haddonfield and 

Haddon Heights communities. 

The new director must be able to build 

upon a strong foundation through excellent 

communication skills, experience in fund 

development, ability to utilize social media and 

promote our mission with strong leadership and 

public engagement skills. The successful candidate 

will be expected to begin by October 1. 

Interfaith Caregivers is a nonsectarian 501(c)(3) 

nonprofit that facilitates independent living by 

providing supportive volunteer services to people 

who are 65+ or who have disabilities.

Dance away – now, for less! 

Dance Haddonfield, the weekly dance held by the 

Delaware Valley chapter of USA Dance, has lowered 

the price of admission from $15 to $10 (USA Dance 

members, $9). Existing Loyalty Cards can be used 

until finished. Admission for the 6pm Intermediate 

Lesson is $15 ($14 for USA Dance members), with $5 

refunded to those leaving right after the 6pm lesson. 

Dance Haddonfield brings the joy of ballroom 

dance to the community, including lessons and an 

opportunity to enjoy an evening of dance every 

Sunday evening at Grace Church, 19 Kings Hwy E. 

The floor heats up with an intermediate lesson 

from 6 to 7pm. Beginner lessons are from 7 to 8. 

Then, from 8 to 10:30, dancers show off their skills 

during open dancing. No partner? No problem. They 

usually have 50 to 100 people dancing each night.
