LETTERS Cancer Council is calling on Queenslanders to show their support for Daffodil Day in 2018, by volunteering a few hours of their time to help save the life of someone they love. Cancer Council’s most iconic fundraising event, Daffodil Day, will take place on Friday, August 24, 2018 to raise funds for lifesaving cancer research. Over the past 20 years, more than 61,000 lives have been saved by improvements in cancer prevention, screening and treatment right across Australia as a result of ongoing research. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan encouraged locals to turn the state yellow and spread hope by volunteering on Daffodil Day this year. “Daffodil Day is one of Queensland’s most iconic events, bringing hope and joy into the lives of locals affected by cancer,” Ms McMillan said. “The daffodil is the international symbol of hope – with every daffodil sold, we can invest in research that will give hope to Queenslanders every minute, every hour, every day. Mort Street Temporary Closure A section of Mort Street between Thackeray St and Hogg St will be temporarily closed from 8 July - 22 July to allow the installation of stormwater services south from the Mort St-Hogg St intersection. The works cannot be done under traffic due to the location and depth of the trenching works. Traffic will be detoured via Hogg/Holberton/North Streets or Griffiths/Ruthven/North or Jellicoe Streets. Local access will be maintained for northbound traffic through to Thackeray St and also for businesses and properties in the section between Thackeray St and Hogg St but not for through traffic. “This year we’re seeking around 1200 people to volunteer their time to sell thousands of daffodils from 300 sites across the state. “Whether you can volunteer for a few hours, or a full day, your contribution will help us raise vital funds that can be invested back into research. While cancer research has made some extraordinary breakthroughs over the years, with treatments improving all the time, there are still cancers with low survival rates and limited treatment options. One Queenslander is still diagnosed with cancer every 20 minutes, more than 27,000 people each year. TR_SEC_170718_HCH_16x4 Picnic Point burn Toowoomba Regional Council is planning a fuel reduction burn in areas of the Picnic Point parkland on Toowoomba’s eastern escarpment in conjunction with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services. Council officers and QFES officers are scheduled to start a controlled burn this week at Picnic Point, conditions permitting. Cr Joe Ramia said a final decision to burn will be made on the morning of July 16. If conditions are unfavourable the burn would be delayed until later in the week. Cr Ramia said the controlled burn would be contained in Council property and was scheduled to take up to five days. “Low rainfall in the past 12 months has meant vegetation is dry enough to burn and the low winter temperatures will result in cool burns, which are preferred to help protect the surrounding environment,” Cr Ramia said. “It is important to seize the chance to conduct these cool burns to reduce fuel loads in the coming weeks to lower the risk of wildfires later in the warmer months. “Council has notified landholders in the area immediately around the bushland park. “Walking tracks such as the Firetail Walk, Fantail Walk and Pardalote Trail will be closed to the public and will be signed accordingly. “Depending on the wind speed and direction, residents in surrounding areas are advised to be aware of smoke in the area, which could settle due to the cold conditions at night and early in the morning. Our singer at the Proms concerts Meringandan soprano Sarah Talbot will be on stage at the Royal Albert Hall in London later this month and in early August for the famous Proms Concerts. Before she moved to the UK in 2016, Sarah, the elder daughter of Paul and Penny Talbot of Meringandan West, had been involved in Toowoomba Choral Society and Empire Theatre performances since 2008. The Promenade Concerts called the Proms is an annual music festival held daily, over eight weeks at various venues in London. Concerts are mainly orchestral classical music celebrating and showcasing composers of historical renown or of great achievement. Proms concerts have been played since 1895, at the Royal Albert Hall. Sarah said many consider the Proms season an important musical event, the epitome of classical music. Orchestras from around the world often come to play. Rehearsals are under way for Sarah’s first concert on July 22, which will feature Mahler’s 8th Symphony with the London Symphony Chorus and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. This will be followed on August 7 by Brahm’s Requiem with the BBC Symphony Cho- Engineering Hair & Beauty Award winning Salon and Stylists Mia’s Offer rus, and then on August 18 will be a Prom Concert conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. It is already sold out and will feature Ravel’s ‘L’Enfant et les Sortilèges’ with the London Symphony Chorus and the London Symphony Orchestra. Council to approve draft Highfields town centre plan The Central Highfields Master Plan is set to be adopted by Toowoomba Regional Council today, Tuesday, July 17, following a sometimes difficult year with the process of convincing residents of its intentions. The process started a year ago when the council presented a plan for the town centre, plus a plan for the opening up many cul-de-sacs in the “old” Highfields area, and adding a new road to link the New England Highway near Highfields State Primary School through the residential area, through the Kuhls Road sports fields to Clarke Road and the Highfields Village Shopping Centre. A protest meeting of about 300 residents in the Cultural Centre took the council representatives by surprise because at least 90 per cent of the people were opposed to the council plans. The council then deferred consideration of the design of the Highfields town centre, and agreed that any future consideration involve early engagement with the Highfields community. The council implemented a staged consultation process which sought to identify community values and a vision for the Central Highfields area. The council prepared three master plan options, and, two months ago, presented the community with a draft master plan based on community feedback. It is this draft plan that the council’s Planning and Development Committee considered last week, and recommended that Council adopt the plan. A catalyst in being able to actively plan for a town centre design occurred late last year when Council acted on a proposal by Cr Paul Antonio that Council buy 19ha of land from developer Clive Berghofer. This land, bounded by O’Brien Road, Highfields Road, and Clarke Road, is opposite the Highfields Village Shopping Centre and was the site of a stock feed mill. Council has listed nine refinements to the draft plan, which were asked for by community members during recent consultations. The Council decided not to include the majority of these refinements to the design. Because the council owns the central Highfields land, it will be able to decide how and when it is developed, and the next stage of the project will be structure planning, when detailed plans will be produced. - MILES NOLLER.
