Her dream is to become a surgical oncologist, a doctor who specializes in cancer surgery. Back’s first three years at Glenbrook South would seem to indicate she’s on the right career track. She is a member of the National Honor Society with advanced placement courses on her transcript and more than 700 hours of community service adorning her resume. She volunteers at NorthShore University HealthSystem — Glenbrook Hospital every Thursday. She is a Habitat for Humanity student leader. Three years ago, she went to Haiti on a service project. The extracurricular list goes on and on: Model United Nations, girls golf, Society of Women Engineers. But Back won’t be returning to GBS for her senior year because she is confronted with a road block: the Trump administration’s immigration policy. Back has determined that if she is to make her dream become reality, her only option is to take a detour to Canada to finish high school, attend college and medical school, and eventually become a Canadian citizen. “I was born in (South) Korea,” Back said. “I came here on July 1, 2009, and this is my ninth year here, which means I’ve lived half my life in the U.S. My mom came with me with the goal of finishing her education and learning English. “We came legally, first with a visitor’s visa and then I transitioned to an S2 visa. THE NORTHBROOK TOWER Village trustees receive plan for cycling, pedestrian network Northbrook Village staff has gathered information since last summer to create a plan that aims to improve the village’s network of cycling and pedestrian pathways and connections. At the Northbrook Village Board’s Tuesday, July 10 meeting, trustees were presented with a nearly 400-page draft master plan, which will be up for adoption at the board’s Tuesday, July 24 meeting. “This is going to require some review by the board members and we’ll move on at a later date,” Trustee Robert Israel said. The plan includes a wide variety of initiatives related to both physical infrastructure and educational programming, and proposes a network of nearly 70 miles of new facilities for walking and biking. The preliminary cost estimate for the proposed network — split between the Northbrook, Cook County and Illinois Department of Transportation jurisdictions — comes in at just more than $56.5 million. “We understand that the implementation numbers are daunting at first, but when you start taking a look at it, similar to our stormwater management plan, many of these things are opportunistic,” Israel said. “So when the opportunity arises to do it in a cost-effective manner, or with another project, those opportunities are pointed to and said ‘those should be taken.’ “So it was our intent to bring it forward and recommend it for adoption by the full board.” Reporting by Fouad Egbaria, Freelance Reporter. THE HIGHLAND PARK LANDMARK Beach construction leads to heated discussion Lakefront construction may be coming to the beaches near Lakeview Terrace, despite objections from a concerned resident. Joel Chan, Highland Park resident, has property at Lakeview Terrace and has expressed concern regarding a proposed revetment at the regular city council meeting on Monday, July 9. A revetment is a stone fortification often added to shorelines and beaches in order to slow the process of erosion. Multiple agencies have given the proposal their stamp of approval and a third-party study indicated that lake levels are rising and several trees have already fallen into the lake. But Chan says the revetment should be a “coastal structure of last resort” and that a revetment would “interrupt the natural coastal process.” Chan gave a presentation at the city council meeting that, he says, is proof that the proposed revetment will actually reduce the size of the surrounding beaches. A representative from Baird & Associates said that there is never an ideal time to install a revetment because “nobody does until they have to.” The representative said that they are hoping for levels of protection similar to Rosewood Beach. The disagreement became heated when Chan continued to ask for more time to give his presentation. At first the council offered him five minutes, to which Chan protested. He was then awarded eight minutes, which he begrudgingly accepted. After his time had expired, he continued to plead with the council for more time. The council granted him two additional minutes, to which Chan said he was nowhere close to finishing his presentation. The council told Chan that the entirety of his presentation had been delivered to them prior to the meeting and they appreciated his concern and enthusiasm. Montessori toured the Forest Bluff School campus and observed summer session classes, where she was able to see the elementary level students (ages 6-12) engage in hands-on work in the organic garden that they prepared and planted with the assistance of the Organic Gardener. Montessori is a great-grandchild of Dr. Maria Montessori, one of Italy’s first female physicians and the revolutionary educator who, over decades of close observation of children in school and at home, constructed a philosophy of education that supports the development of the whole child and continues to flourish in Montessori schools throughout the world today.
