12 | July 19, 2018 | The lake forest leader School LakeForestLeader.com Woodlands Academy makes impressive math contest debut Submitted by Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart’s firstever time participating in the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ annual contest culminated in four top-10 finishes at the state finals May 5 at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. According to organizers, the purpose of the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ State Math Contest is to recognize outstanding mathematical achievement, encourage independent study, stimulate interest in mathematics and provide a wholesome meeting ground for students and teachers of mathematics through academic competition. It has been an annual event since 1980. In the Division 1A (small schools) competition, Woodlands’ Mathcats placed third in the freshman/sophomore eight-person team event, seventh in the freshman/sophomore two-person team event, seventh overall in Algebra 1 (based on the combined scores of Woodlands Academy’s six participants in this individual competition) and eighth in the Algebra 1 event, won by freshman Ingrid Hu (out of 149 contestants). The members of Woodlands Academy’s thirdplace team were Hanna Bryce, Liz Coughlin, Gabriella Flores, Ingrid Hu, Kitty Lu, Stephanie Harpold, Kate Wiegand and Natalie Williams. Woodlands’ two-person team consisted of Ingrid Hu and Kitty Lu and in addition to Hu, freshmen Hanna Bryce, Gabriella Flores, Stephanie Harpold, Kate Wiegand and Natalie Williams also competed in the Algebra 1 individual event. While the all-girls college-prep day-andboarding high school has participated in other math contests in the past, Math Club moderator Dr. Mihaela Marcusanu decided it was time to “up the game” a bit this year. “We chose [Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics’] because of the variety of subjects and of the skills within one subject that it provides,” she said. En route to the state finals in Urbana, Woodlands Academy placed second overall in Division 1A at its inaugural ICTM event, the Region 20 Competition held at Niles West High School Feb. 24. “I’m so proud of our students’ stellar accomplishments and of the leadership of our math teachers resulting in this very successful debut in the [Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics’] math competition,” said Head of School Meg Steele. Assistant Principal Rocco Gargiulo, who also teaches some math classes, added “These accomplishments confirm Woodlands Academy’s commitment to STEM fields as well as the math department’s role in transforming our outstanding girls into empowered young women.” School News Indiana Wesleyan University Pleau named to dean’s list Breiana Pleau, of Lake Forest, was named to the Indiana Wesleyan University’s dean’s list for the spring semester of the 2017-18 school year. To be named on this list, a student must obtain a 3.50 GPA on an 4.00 scale and carry at least 12 credit hours for the semester. University of Dayton Local residents named to dean’s list The following local residents earned a spot on the University of Dayton’s spring 2018 dean’s list for achieving a minimum 3.5 GPA. Katie Bennett, Jessica Burnham, John Canning, Matthew Clifford, Sachin Nagarajan, Caitlin Schneider and Olivia Vallone, all of Lake Forest, and Madi Dembinski and Brett Murawski, both of Lake Bluff. Wheaton College Local residents named to dean’s list The following Wheaton College students from your coverage area were named to the spring 2018 dean’s list. Dean’s list honors are earned by undergraduate students who carry 12 or more credit hours and achieve a 3.5 grade point average or higher on the 4.0 scale. Degree-seeking undergraduate students are eligible for dean’s list if their term GPA is greater than or equal to 3.400; they do not have any grades of “Incomplete”, “D” or “F”; and they have registered for, and completed, at least 12 credit hours. Clemson University Local residents named to dean’s list Local residents have been named to the dean’s list at Clemson University for the spring 2018 semester. The University of Alabama Dean’s, president’s lists students named A total of 11,347 students enrolled during the 2018 spring semester at The University of Alabama were named to the dean’s list with GPA of 3.5 or above or the president’s list with an academic record of 4.0 (all A’s). The UA dean’s and president’s lists recognize full-time undergraduate students. The lists do not apply to graduate students or undergraduate students who take less than a full course load. NEIGHBORS From Page 10 is partnering with Angelina Vivant Fine Art on a community painting to take place during the 2018 Glencoe Festival of Art. A Glencoe resident and first-time exhibitor at the festival, Angelina Vivant, has created a charitable component to her exhibit called Community Strokes of Kindness with proceeds to benefit a local community support system. “Our community supports and enriches our every day, but some of us need a little guidance from time-to-time,” Vivant said. “My hope is to lift and to bring awareness to community organizations through my exhibits when I can because everyone deserves a chance to find clarity, support and joy in living.” Festival attendees will have the opportunity to apply paint strokes to a canvas, building on prior strokes, to collectively create a piece of art. “It will be a tangible symbol of how we can support each other and build each other up, creating something beautiful, purposeful and rewarding,” she said. The final piece will be sold through a silent auction on the second day of the festival. Proceeds will go to Family Service. “FSG is honored to be chosen as the charity recipient for this special kindness project as it resonates with our mission to strengthen our community,” said Lara Port, Family Service board member. “We are excited to share in Angie’s growth as an artist and her desire to use her talents in this personal way.” The 2018 Glencoe Festival of Art will take place 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, July 28-29, in downtown Glencoe. Guests of all ages and abilities are invited to add strokes to the community painting. There is no cost to contribute to the painting. Bids may be submitted directly to Vivant at her booth.
