This year’s AOBA National Conference celebrates twenty years of North American alpaca history! The AOBA National Conference is the premier alpaca event in the United States. It is at the Conference that you can network with other alpaca owners, catch sight of new ideas for alpaca fiber, shop for animals and alpaca products, attend educational sessions, and compete in or watch a show! Twenty years ago… …the first commercial importation of alpacas into the United States occurred. During the several years that followed that first importation in 1984, these original alpaca owners began to meet and discuss the formation of an association. The association was formed for the following purposes: (1) to promote public awareness and membership appreciation of the alpaca’s unique qualities; (2) to educate the membership on the care and breeding of the alpaca; (3) to promote the growth of the alpaca industry as a whole; and (4) to foster the establishment of the breed outside of its native land. The association operates under a Board of Directors who are all in volunteer positions without compensation. In the short time since the association was formed (beginning with 87 memberships and a known North American alpaca census of 392), AOBA has come 26 Twenty Years and Growing! to represent over 3,000 member farms and ranches, and nearly 50,000 alpacas. During this time, the activities of the association have also increased. Some of the highlights follow: 1988 – Thirty-eight people gathered at Shanty Creek Lodge in Bellaire, Michigan in a “special meeting” to discuss the formation (including by-laws and articles of incorporation) of what is now known as the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association, Inc. (AOBA). 1988 – AOBA began work on an Alpaca Registry where it was housed until it was subsequently moved to the International Lama Registry (ILR) and operated as a separate branch. ■ What’s New? Today, the registry is a separate corporation known as the Alpaca Registry, Inc. (ARI). 1990 – The first issue of Alpacas Magazine was printed. 1992 – AOBA held its own first Annual Conference in Estes Park, Colorado. 1999 – To expand alpaca awareness to a larger audience, television advertising began and has increased steadily to where there is a television spot run nearly every day of the year. 2000 – In the Fall of 2002, AOBA formally created its own Alpaca Certified Show system (independent of the Alpaca & Llama Show Associa- Let’s remember the past twenty years! Stop by the AOBA store at the National Conference to purchase past conference memorabilia and other AOBA marketing products. Town Hall Meeting A new “Town Hall Meeting” will be held at the National Conference on Thursday afternoon, June 3rd. This meeting will give you the opportunity to ask questions of the AOBA Board during a panel discussion. Marketing Opportunities! Distribute farm and ranch materials (sales flyers, booth invitations, etc.) to each Louisville Conference attendee at the conference check-in for a modest fee! Be sure and attend the AOBA fashion show. This semi-annual event is always one of the highlights of each National Conference.
