Affiliate News 44 ■ Alpaca Breeders of the Rockies (ABR) Planning continues for the Great Western Alpaca Show, April 30 - May 2 at the historic National Western Stock Show Complex in Denver, CO. We are going to have a full house, so don’t get left out! Go to www.alpacabreeders.org and register today. We’re going to three rings this year so don’t get left out of the ribbon count! Speaking of the National Western Stock Show, the ABR organization sponsored an alpaca information booth January 10 through 25, 2004. Over 600,000 people attended this 98th annual Stock Show and the 53 Farms talked to a great portion of them!! Many thanks go to those 70+ volunteers who worked the 16-day, 9 AM to 9 PM event. We were heartened this year that a lot more people actually knew what alpacas were. The most asked question, of course, was “What’s the difference between a llama and an alpaca?” Our Education Committee, headed up by Linda Kondris, Pines Edge Suri Alpacas, is mapping out educational opportunities for our members for 2004 and beyond, including a neo-natal clinic; what volunteers actually do at a show; alpaca nutrition; genetics; and much more! Thanks to this group: Tsulan Balka, Lavender Fields Alpacas Barbara Adams, Windstar Alpacas Beth Blonder, Red Creek Ranch Alpacas Kathy Moore, ‘Perky Pacas Cathy Seymour, Lone Pine Alpacas, and Barbara Ziek, Wild Hair Alpacas …ABR will be offering its members lots of educational opportunities. ABR’s venue for the Fall Festival and Harvest Fleece Show, October 9 & 10, 2004 will be changing from the Jefferson County Fairground near Golden, CO to the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Castle Rock, CO. Our Fall Festival show has grown larger and larger and we needed more room for the ever-expanding alpaca farm/ranch population in Colorado. Contact: Becky Zierer, ABR President, lzbalpacas@aol.com or (303) 644-4110. ■ Empire Alpaca Association (EAA) EAA keeps growing very quickly. After only two years of existence, we already have over 130 members. It’s so exciting to be involved with alpacas in New York. We are coming off of recent highlights, such as the Empire Alpaca Extravaganza (AOBA Certified Level 4 show), and the Empire Education Symposium, two of the cornerstones of our organization. Both are first class events involving first class fun. At the recently completed Symposium, we had nationally known speakers Amanda VandenBosch speaking on show topics, Dr. Dorian Garrick lecturing on breeding decisions, as well as, Hazen Reed and Susan Muther enlightening the masses with their marketing knowledge. It was an incredible weekend and we want to thank everyone who attended. We also just formed a seven-member marketing committee that will start to work together to promote the New York alpaca lifestyle. They will be taking this campaign both statewide and nationally. It will be very exciting for our members. All of the ads will be drawing target audiences to our website, so update your member profiles and check that all of your contact information is up to date. Lastly, we will again be doing the “I Love New York Llama and Alpaca Weekend” in October. Polly Michaelis has been working hard with our elected officials to again let Albany aid us in this promotion. But get together with your neighbors and organize your plans for this annual Columbus Day event. Last year’s event was a huge success and we hope for even more participation in 2004. ■ Emerald Valley Alpaca Association (EVAA) AOBA: 856-439-1076, AOBA@ahint.com ■ ARI: 703-610-9022, bjstanger@alpacaregistry.net Although the year has just begun, plans are already underway for two premier events in Oregon. EVAA is one of several western affiliates supporting the Western Regional Alpaca Show Association and our western regional event, the Alpaca Western Extravaganza (AWE). The 2004 AWE event will be held in the Deschutes Expo Center in Redmond, Oregon on May 14-16. Last year’s event was very successful and featured over 700 alpacas. We expect more than 800 entrants this year! Visit the AWE website www.awe-alpacas.org for complete details and join us at this major regional event and show. Also, mark your calendar to attend our new cooperative three-day event June 25-27, 2004 at the Lane County Fairgrounds in Eugene, Oregon. The Alpaca Marketplace replaces EVAA’s former annual Alpaca Exhibition, with a clear focus on marketing. This event will be devoted to offering a large variety of alpacas, as well as fiber and alpaca merchandise. The Alpaca Marketplace will run concurrent with the nationally known Black Sheep Gathering. EVAA’s website is www.eva-alpacas.com. ■ Mid-Atlantic Alpaca Association (MaPaca) Even though the weather was frigid, MaPaca had a presence at the Pennsylvania Farm Show the second week of January, 2004. Dedicated MaPaca members volunteered their time to man the MaPaca booth for seven days, and some even brought their alpacas. MaPaca volunteers shared the joys of the alpaca lifestyle with thousands of people who stopped at the display featuring both suri and huacaya alpacas. On four of the seven days of the Farm Show, MaPaca members presented “Intro to Alpacas” seminars to anyone interested in learning more. In total, over 500,000 people flocked to the PA Farm Show Complex and had the opportunity to see alpacas and learn more about these amazing animals. The Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex is also the site of the up-and-coming MaPaca Eastern Alpaca Jubilee, 2004, “Color Me Alpaca.” The Jubilee will be held on April 23-25, 2004 and will be one of the premier shows of this years’ show season. New to the Jubilee this year will be its first auction with ribbon-winning alpacas! The auction will be conducted by Celebrity Sales. This year’s MaPaca Jubilee will feature halter, fleece, and performance classes, four rings of simultaneous judging with world-renowned judges, and seminars by leading alpaca experts. ■ Missouri Owners & Breeders Association (MOPACA) MaPaca is offering online registration at it’s site, www.mapaca.org. The MaPaca Jubilee Coordinator will be Nick Melfi. If you would like more information, please contact him at (908) 369-FARM or melfifarm@aol.com . All 2003 Jubilee participants will automatically receive a printed copy of the registration booklet. Anyone else wishing to receive a printed registration booklet should contact Kit Hower, khower@ blancstonealpacas.com or call (610) 797-4309. A group of hard-working volunteers are working to enhance communications at the Jubilee this year and plan to have real-time results posted for all classes throughout the show weekend, so exhibitors can track the winners. Results will be posted for all ribbons awarded, as everyone deserves recognition for his/her hard work. The show superintendent will again be Peg Stephens and as soon as Peg finishes collating the show results, they will be available on the MaPaca web site within two weeks of the show. Fleece Show results will also be available on the web site and will also be available at the end of the show for exhibitors to take home with them.
