HAIKOU
NIGHTTIME HISTORIC STROLLS
Although Haikou has seen a lot of modern development in the
last few years, at its heart is Chengdu – a historic area where
age-old architecture, streets and narrow alleys abound. Each
intricately archaic facade was built by former overseas Chinese
merchants who fused Chinese-European elements with Indian and Arabian
touches. Here, you’ll also find Renmin Park and its artistic landscape which
consists of a bonsai garden, two tea houses, a section that feaures kiddie
amusement rides and a Koi pond. While high-end restaurants and gift shops
are within the locale, this spot remains as an avenue for neighbourhood shops
and markets (such as the Dongmen Pedestrian Street) that peddles local food
and handicrafts.
FROLICKING AT THE
BEACH (Below)
The next facet of Haikou to
enjoy is the ocean, and the city bears
not only breathtaking sea views but
also a couple of stretches of golden
sand heading west. Xixi Beach and
Holiday Beach are closest to the
centre and are well-known windsurfing
spots. The latter is the most popular
beach in the city and possesses a slew
of restaurants, as well as barbeque and
drinks stalls. Both beaches are kept
pretty clean, though the proximity of
the port means the water can be a bit
on the murky side. Given the usual heat
of the day, it is recommended to visit
during the afternoon.
STROLLING SAFETY
One thing to watch out for
in Haikou is the motorists’
driving behaviour. While
locals tend to drive
considerably slowly, they
also have a relaxed attitude
to the rules of the road.
