I and the members of The Royal British Legion 

(Women’s Section) would like to thank The Royal 

British Legion together with the Town councillors for 

all their hard work organising such a great event in 

Swaffham on the 21st June with the Grenadier Guards 

Beating the Retreat. It was a lovely day enjoyed by 

all, especially by the children, I wonder how many 

little boys and girls went home saying they would like 

to be a Guardsman/woman when they grow up. 

The concert in the church afterwards was a great 

success and enjoyed by all if the response by the 

audience was anything to go by so a big thank you to 

the Grenadiers. 

What a nice way to remember all our service men/ 

women who gave their lives for us in the first World 

War 100 years ago, we were proud of them then, 

I think they would be proud of us today. We have 

remembered them.

West Acre Village Hall Committee 

The West Acre Village fete held on 23rd June was the 

best to date, with additional stalls selling arts and 

crafts from local people to add to the entertainment. 

Starting an hour earlier proved to be very popular 

allowing people to enjoy a delicious lunch of trout, 

game, something from the BBQ or just tea and cakes 

for those with a sweet tooth. It was a lovely sunny 

day with children playing in the river, cheering on 

their duck to try and win the well sought after West 

Acre Duck Race badges. 

We would like to thank all of the local businesses who 

generously donated raffle prizes and to everyone who 

contributed towards the tombola, cake stall, books 

and bric-a-brac which, 

along with all the games, 

play an important part of 

the day. Most of all a big 

thank you to Garlinda for 

allowing us to use her 

garden again and all the 

volunteers who gave up 

their own time to make 

the day happen and help 

raise £3580 for the West 

Acre Village Hall. 

Swaffham Library News 

Extended Opening Hours 

Along with other libraries across Norfolk, Swaffham 

Library will be offering longer opening hours with 

an extended Open Libraries service from the end of 

June. This widens access to library materials, public 

computers and quiet, creative spaces to meet or 

study even while the building is unstaffed, making 

your library available at times that are convenient 

for you.With an Open Libraries registration you will 

be able to visit and use the library: 

Monday to Friday 8am-7pm 

Saturday 8am-4pm 

Sunday 10am-4pm 

These times contain both staffed and unstaffed 

hours, and you will need to register for our Open 

Libraries service to access the library during 

unstaffed times.

Upcoming Events 

Youth Careers Advice 

Pop Up Enterprises are pleased to have gained some funding from Breckland YAB 

to deliver some Qualified Careers Advice in the community. We will have our 

specialist adviser based in the Swaffham Community Centre between 1pm and 

9pm on 9th and 23rd August, with appointments available for anyone aged 11 - 19.

can talk about anything from exam results, transport to college, career plans, CV 

and much more!

create, rehearse and perform an original piece of theatre by the end of the day. 

No pressure to perform and the emphasis, as always, is on process over product.

A Kennel Club Companion Fun dog show in aid of the Desert Rats Association on

Nar Valley Ornithological Society (NarVOS) 

Tuesday 28th August 2018, 7.30pm at the Barn Theatre, Sacred Heart Convent 

School, Swaffham. Access and parking from Sporle Road. Please come along to this 

illustrated talk by Henry Stanier, entitled: The Great Fen Project – A Future Wetland 

and more. The Great Fen is a 50-year project – one of the largest in Europe - to 

create a huge wetland area between Peterborough and Huntingdon for the benefit 

both of wildlife and of people. Henry Stanier, from the Great Fen, will talk about 

the project’s background, the amazing progress so far and the vision for the future.

Sacred Heart Convent 

Sacred Heart School Literary Festival 2018 

For three days the pupils at the Sacred Heart School in 

Swaffham were released from their normal timetable 

to take part in a literary extravaganza! 

Staff, past and present, had worked hard to transform 

the school hall into themed bays (e.g. Victorian, 

Wildlife, Biggles, Exploration) to accommodate literary 

workshops. 

Storyteller, Paul Jackson, captivated all ages with his 

tales of wonder and use of cultural instruments, with 

some pupils attempting to produce sound from his 

didgeridoo; Dr. Sue Gattuso of Swaffham Museum 

enthralled them with the history of comics and annuals 

and the story of The Pedlar of Swaffham; illustrator 

and author Peter Kavanagh encouraged pupils – and 

staff – to access their imagination and create cartoon 

characters whilst two creative writers from the 

University of East Anglia encouraged older pupils to 

write short imaginative pieces of writing. 

As well as introducing her books, author and designer 

Mandy Stanley took the children through the process 

of producing a book and this was complimented by 

a former pupil, natural history writer and publisher 

Sarah Whittley, who brought in proofs of her new book 

straight from the press. 

Some groups even had the opportunity work with 

James McCullough, from EWTN TV company, to script 

write and present a short video production which 

could be used on the school website. And all of this 

was backed up by YouTube clips provided by American 

author Natasha Friend and James Johnson, script and 

Podcast writer. 

Three classes visited the Swaffham library and the 

next day one young lad came running up and excitedly 

regaled staff with the fact that his grandmother had 

promised to take him again, another asked if we will be 

doing this again next year! Surely an indication of how 

successful the whole event was. 

Sally Gooderson (Literary Festival Organiser) 

How to describe the Ardeche trip? Mad, crazy, 

courageous, wonderful, astounding, scary, exciting and 

unbelievable come to mind. It lasted 9 days but from 

Saturday to Sunday, with 31 students from years 6 to 10, 

four staff, Miss Oatridge, Mr Glenister, Mrs Arenfelt, Sr 

Renata and myself. There had been lots of preparation 

beforehand and with our hoodies at the ready we 

headed to Southern France and a town called Ruoms in 

the Ardeche Gorge. The area is a heritage site with huge 

number of wild animals, not just Sacred Heart students, 

and scenery to talk about for a lifetime. We stayed in 

basic tents (with beds, so a bit like rough glamping) but 

no electricity and this made the holiday more special 

as there were no 

mobile phones! 

Right from the start 

there was activity 

after activity. a 

whirlwind of images 

and emotions, 

laughter (and some 

tears) but mostly 

emotions of pure joy at being able to succeed at some 

difficult and challenging tasks. From climbing to caving 

to kayaking to archery, Nightline, Riverwalk, Mission 

Impossible, raft building. Our students took them all on 

and hugely enjoyed them all. The students grew in their 

confidence on a daily basis and the staff were constantly 

amazed at how some reserved students showed huge 

inner strength and surmounted their own fears. 

“Once we arrived at the rock climbing wall we 

suddenly realised what we had just walked into. The 

wall was about 15 metres high and some of us weren’t 

particularly capable nor wanting to climb it. Most of 

us managed to climb up the wall and abseil back down 

with ease” “Firstly, we got into our kayaks, then we 

started to paddle in the water, after a few minutes we 

stopped at a sandy area. We did a five star challenge 

which required us to stand on the boat and paddle, lie 

on the boat with your nose in the water” We also visited 

two nearby towns, Ruoms and Vallont-Pont-D’Arc and a 

show cave, where we met the skull of a bear. We ate 

ice cream, bought souvenirs, practiced our French and 

relaxed a bit. The most memorable part of the holiday 

however was the descent. We canoed 26km over one 

and a half days, with 13 rapids with names such a Black 

Tooth and Grade 13. (Normally rapids are graded from 

1 to 6!). we ‘bivvied’ under the stars and were rained 

on by stinging caterpillars which excited several of the 

boys convinced they were going to die, but no wild 

boars this year.. The paddling was fantastic and again 

we were impressed by the tenacity of our students. 

It was a fantastic adventure and my thanks goes to the 

parents for supporting it, the staff who went and made 

it possible , the office brigade who kept me sane and 

without whom it could not have happened but most 

of my thanks go to the students who were absolutely 

wonderful! Looking forward to the next one already!!

The 150th Anniversary at the Cathedral for the Daughters 

of Divine Charity was a very special occasion. The 

pupils sang with enthusiasm and all who had individual 

tasks exceeded expectations. It was a wonderful 

community effort with

parishioners, friends 

and parents joining in 

our celebration. Gavin, 

the Manager at the 

Cathedral, worked with 

his team and Kirsty and our catering & maintenance 

staff to pull off a very successful BBQ. Many parishioners 

at the Cathedral praised the organisation and good 

behaviour of the pupils. The children enjoyed seeing 

the Sisters from Chesterfield and Hunstanton. Thank 

you to Impsons Butchers, CC Wells Fruiterers and Bonzo 

Country Bakers.

Students have been busy decorating our TNHA hares 

as part the celebrations for Norfolk Day on 27th July. 

Look out for the finished articles around the town. 

Creative Arts Trip 

This terms Creative Arts trip was a monster of a 

hit! Over 40 excited students visited Theatre Royal 

in Norwich, appreciating the sights and sounds of 

the City prior to the engaging show; eating alfresco, 

visiting the toy shop, cheering on street performers 

and soaking up the sun whilst appreciating the 

views of the Forum and Cathedral. For some, this 

was their first time experiencing a live performance 

at the Theatre - and one that will not be forgotten 

in a hurry; an energetic and engaging musical, that 

generated a lot of laughter! It wasn't long before 

all the students were standing up out of their seats, 

clapping and singing along to their favourite green 

ogre and loveable donkey! 

Anti Bullying Photostand Up To Bullying 

Marking National Stand up to Bullying Day, on 13th 

June, students at the academy were involved in 

thought provoking activities encouraging others 

to think about bullying and its long term effects. 

Students watched the message by Prince William the 

Duke of Cambridge and saw poignant accounts of the 

impact on young people their own age.

In order to promote awareness amongst their peers 

and encouraging them to be ‘up standees’ rather than 

bystanders students designed badges highlighting 

the need to report bullying. 

World Cup Theme At Sports Day 

Fantastic sunny weather greeted our annual Sports 

Event this year. The two day event was opened with a 

ceremony celebrating a World Cup Theme. Colleges 

each devised performances and Art to celebrate 

their given countries to include the Icelandic 

thunderclap, Mexico’s Mariachi music, Brazilian 

Samba and even Kylie Minogue’s locomotion! During 

the first day students represented their college by 

competing in field events. The second day was made 

up of track athletics. In addition to the traditional 

athletics events, every student competed for points 

in the college games. This included a wide range of 

activities such as tug-of-war, sports quiz, obstacle 

courses and the opening ceremony. Over 20 athletics 

records were broken and 122 medals awarded. After 

two days of intense competition, Kestrels came out 

as this year’s Sports Day champions! 

Workshop Club 

If you happened to be in the Design Technology 

area after school you would hear music and the 

sound of machinery. Although lessons are over - 

the Workshop Club is in full swing! Students are 

undertaking all manner of projects, using saws, 

drills, planes etc. to make items such as Dolls’ House 

(along with miniature furniture), Bird Houses and 

sets for the Drama Department etc. under the expert 

guidance of Mr. Vail. Often covered in paint and 

sawdust the students can’t think of a better way to 

enjoy themselves. 

The World Of Work 

Vets, schools, engineering, local business and garages 

are just some of the places our Year 10 students are 

visiting for work experience this week. During this 

vital phase of their education they will discover more 

about the ‘world of work’, learning interpersonal 

skills, good timekeeping etc. and gain an idea of 

where they may wish to take their future career. We 

look forward to hearing more about their adventures 

when they return.

Swaffham Methodist Church 

New resource for town at Methodist Church 

Coming into town on London Street, you can’t fail to 

have noticed as you passed the Methodist church, 

contractors at work. Swaffham’s Methodists have 

‘seen the light’ and realise that, churches have to 

become places where people can be involved in all 

sorts of activities in an up to date, welcoming and 

safe environment. In this major regeneration project 

which has taken four years to come to fruition, the 

interior of the church will be transformed to provide 

a bright, open space, laid with a new floor. Underfloor 

heating, powered by green energy air source heat 

pumps will keep the church at a constant ambient 

temperature and help to reduce the town’s carbon 

footprint. New, stackable chairs are replacing the 

pews so that church services can be held in different 

formations from traditional to modern, or the space 

can be completely cleared for activities ranging from 

fitness and well-being classes to music and drama 

activities. The church, as before, will be available 

to local groups and while the welcome will be the 

same, the facilities will be greatly enhanced. 

Among the new resources is a refreshment servery 

within the church space as well as new all-ability 

access to the washrooms. This will mean that two 

separate groups can make use of the church and the 

church hall at the same time, having independent 

access to facilities. New audio-visual functions are 

being installed with one-touch set-up so that sound 

and projection as well as internet access will all 

be ‘on tap’. Work started on the 18th June and is 

scheduled to be completed by the end of October. 

Once the building works are signed off, local artist, 

Eddie Goodridge will start work on a major project to 

create a church-town-county mural across one entire 

wall of the refurbished interior, bringing together 

Christian themes and local life. This, the church 

hopes, will become a wonderful teaching resource 

and focal point for enquiring minds. 

The refurbished rooms will be available for use and 

for hire towards the end of the year. All information

Merle Boddy Centre 

We are always up for a challenge, so when we were 

asked to decorate two hares we were in heaven. The 

hares reflect Swaffham and of course the day centre. 

The ladies worked their magic on an idea I had; just 

look at what they did; amazing doesn’t come close to 

what they have achieved. They say from an acorn a 

oak tree grows, well that is what happened here. They 

took the idea and made it something so special. All 

the work was done by our clients with a little guidance 

from both the Jo’s who are both very creative with 

the craft ideas and activities they devise. By the time 

you read this all the hares will have been displayed, 

I hope you all enjoyed finding them and admired the 

hard work that went in to making everyone of them. 

I would like to thank the organisers of this event and 

ask that we can please have some more so everyone 

can show case their skills; this is a great platform for 

people to be able to say we are here, just see what 

we can do next. 

Steph has reached a special 0 birthday and everyone 

at the Merle Boddy sends her much love and best 

wishes. As she was saying goodbye to her 30’s Steph 

had a present everyday for a week, just to ease 

her into her noughties. Saying goodbye is always 

traumatic, but the 40’s are the new 30’s, so back to 

square one! 

The Merle Boddy Centre has been very fortunate to 

have students placed here from colleges. This time 

we had Kaylin who has been a real asset to the team. 

We hope that Kaylin will go on to achieve what she 

wants from her career, what ever that may be. 

Swaffham Baptist Church 

We have recently enjoyed a wonderful holiday, with 

our family, in beautiful Perthshire, Scotland. The 

weather was warm and sunny and really enabled us 

to get out into the stunning surroundings of Loch Tay. 

Our children and grandchildren all live away from 

Norfolk so to meet up is special to us and we all 

enjoy spending time together. I sometimes wonder 

if we would get on so well if we lived together all of 

the time, but, as we don't, we can catch up and find 

out each others' news. 

This set me thinking of the Churches in Swaffham, 

and in particular of Churches together. Each 

denomination has different traditions, and those of 

us who go to Church, choose the one that suits us 

best, but when we get together for the occasional 

events, we really enjoy hearing of other’s experiences 

and customs and sharing together. We can learn so 

much from others if we spend time with them and 

I'm sure you would be very welcome to visit any 

Church and see. 

We, at the Baptist Church, love to have visitors, and 

can assure you of a warm welcome. Just as a family, 

we are not perfect [far from it] but we try to show 

God's love to one another. God bless you all.

Well, who would have thought that car mechanics 

could be fun?! With this lovely set of colourful, giant 

Meccano nuts, bolts, wheels and twidderly bits it 

becomes a truck or a car. We are having fun creating 

strange vehicles, I was able to get several sets so 

our creations can get pretty big. The purchasing of 

several creative kits came from vouchers that were 

part of my award from Magic radio and TSB . 

On the 30th June Chris Manley sang at the 

Conservative Club. He donated money to Necton 

Sports and Social 

Club, as well as the 

Merle Boddy Centre. 

This donation is

Swaffham & District Lions 

Iceni Young Leaders, part of the 

Iceni Youth Club, celebrated the 

National EqualiTea event with their 

own celebration of Inspirational 

Women and Young People. Lion 

President Pam Tallon was delighted to be asked to 

take part along with other leading women from the 

town. The Youth Team decided to celebrate 90 years 

since the Representation of the People Act 1928, 

which gave men and women over 21 the equal right 

to vote. The evening turned into a lively debate on 

a range of subjects associated with equality. The 

event finished off with tea and cakes prepared by the 

young people. 

Swaffham Lions were only too pleased to answer 

the call to help marshal the crowds at Swaffham’s 

Beating the Retreat which was held in the Market 

Place. With capacity crowds, the main tasks for the 

team of eight Lions, was keeping the public safe along 

the busy main road and monitoring the car parking. 

With family budgets being stretched and a rise in 

homeless people, Swaffham Lions approached Tesco 

at Swaffham to arrange a three day food collection 

for the Mid Norfolk foodbank. The foodbank covers 

Swaffham, Fakenham and Dereham. The food is 

sorted in Dereham before distribution to the three 

towns. With the support of the generous customers 

at Tesco over 120kg of food was collected on the first 

day, in total the Lions collected 566kg of food over 

the 3 day period. Non-food items such as female 

sanitary items, shampoo, shower gel, washing up 

liquid and toilet paper were also collected. 

Swaffham and District Lions were happy to support 

Swaffham & Litcham Home Hospice at their Relay 

Together event at Swaffham Rugby Club. The Lions 

had their ever popular Pig Race game where children 

and adults had great fun cheering on their pig. The 

team also handed out the Lions Message in a Bottle 

containers which is an aid to the paramedics when 

on an emergency call at a patients home. 

At Swaffham & District Lions Change Over evening 

a new member was inducted into the club; Hazel 

Catlett had been a Lion at Chippenham before 

moving to Swaffham with her husband Peter. 

Lion President, Pam Tallon, had the pleasure of 

awarding a Melvin Jones Fellowship to Colin Mowles 

for his outstanding service to the Lions over the past 

thirty four years. Colin, who is a founder member of 

Swaffham Lions, has held all of the officer posts in 

the club as well as zone and district appointments. 

Melvin Jones was the founder of the Lions Club. 

The first club was in Chicago in 1917 and is now in 

over 200 countries. It is awarded to members for 

dedicated humanitarian services. 

Swaffham & District Lions have a new President, 

Alan Jude, who has taken over from Pam Tallon at 

a Changeover event held in 

the Conservative Club. Pam 

said that she had enjoyed 

her year especially being 

involved with the young 

people and the community 

in general. Alan has been 

President of a London 

Lions club before moving to 

Swaffham with his wife Julie.

Swaffham Royal British Legion 

When the Band of the Grenadier Guards marched 

onto Swaffham Market Place my heart nearly burst 

with pride! I was proud of them, yes, but also so 

proud of our Town and its people. Everything that I 

had only seen in my mind up to then was played out 

in front of me, thanks to the help of the Town Council 

and others. The Market Place looked like a Parade 

Ground and was just so well suited to such an event, 

with the Butter Cross and other historic buildings 

surrounding it adding to the spectacle. The sun 

shone, the cool breeze, that I had been concerned 

might make things awkward for the Standard 

Bearers, dropped, and it became warmer. In spite 

of a large number of people there we didn’t hear 

of any incidents. Truly Swaffham at its best! Deputy 

Lord Lieutenant Sir William Cubitt Wilson took the 

salute. Sir William is also County President of the 

Royal British Legion and I believe was once in the 

Coldstream Guards. The Swaffham Branch Standard 

was carried by Gavin MacFarlane borrowed for the 

ocassion from Dickleborough Branch as we haven’t 

at present got a Standard Bearer. Francis Barker of 

Swaffham carried the Womens’ Section Standard 

and the other Standards were from various Norfolk 

Branches. I’m sure you will agree they did a great job. 

We needed a flag and flagpole and also somebody to 

lower the flag at the appropriate time and I called 

on the help of our friends from RAF Marham who 

proudly came along and performed that duty. It was 

great to see a gentleman from the Royal Chelsea 

Hospital in his uniform really enjoying the evening 

and the little boy wearing a Grenadier Guards 

uniform complete with bearskin. Beating Retreat 

was fabulous to watch; the red and black uniforms, 

the black bearskins, instruments that shone as much 

as the boots! The evening concert in the Parish 

Church was an astounding success and we had over 

four hundred people in attendance. The programme 

was varied and included a beautiful rendition of 

‘Bring Him Home’ from Les Miserables sung by a 

young Guardsman with the most wonderful voice. 

There were Band pieces, also a sing-a-long to ‘Songs 

that won the War’with two Guards taking to the 

microphones and encouraging us all to join in. They 

were clearly enjoying themselves as much as us. All 

in all a great finale to the day and I for one won’t 

forget the day the Band of the Grenadier Guards 

came to Swaffham.

Sporle Afternoon WI 

On a beautiful warm & sunny 

afternoon Sporle WI entertained 

a most enthusiastic young woman 

whose topic The Hawk & Owl Trust, Sculthorpe 

Moor was so interesting the time flew by and we 

could have listened to her all afternoon. In fact she 

stayed with us for tea and cake and talked with the 

members of her life with the trust and how she 

goes around talking to groups much as ourselves, 

school children and visitors to the 2 centres they 

have. The writer actually remembers one of the 

birds of prey and recently while sitting in the garden 

guessed why the pigeons had gone deathly quiet – 

a bustard was flying about our heads – oh that it 

was there all the time!!! 

There seemed quite a lot of business this month and 

the secretary went through it after our refreshment 

break. Some of the members were a little tired as 

they had been on an exchange visit to Germany and 

only got home at midnight the night before. They 

had enjoyed the trip as their hosts had been keen 

to show them all the sights during their 4 days. We 

were reminded about the Breast Cancer Care fund 

raising event (July 27th) and our summer outing to 

the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. 

Members and friends have taken most seats on the 

coach and the remaining ones are being offered to 

other WI’s in the area. 2019 is going to be a bumper 

year for the WI with so many special events taking 

place. The programme is now complete and with a 

new WI logo it promises to be a very busy time. 

Sporle WI every third TUESDAY of the month 2pm – 4pm 

Pickenhams’ WI 

For our July Meeting we were 

entertained by Mr Paul Stevenson 

with Pictures and Slides of the most 

beautifully restored houses of all shapes and sizes 

which can be rented from the Landmark Trust for 

holidays and breaks. These are situated all over 

the countryside in the uk.some of which sleep one 

others twelve. Members agreed our trip to the 

Battle Area had been a Great Success.

Mystery Tour on the 10th August. Still seats 

available. The trip includes morning coffee/tea, 

afternoon tea/coffee and cake plus coach travel 

and a surprise.

Beachamwell & District WI 

Bollywood comes to the Beachamwell 

WI. Who said the WI was all Jam and 

Jerusalem ? In July, we had a chance to 

let our hair down with a Bollywood workshop led by 

Tina Vallance, from Jaya Dance. Tina put us through 

our paces learning a real Indian dance routine, which 

involved non-stop action, seemingly moving all body 

parts at once in opposite directions! A real workout! 

There were some creaky joints and mis-steps on the 

way, but soon we were ready to perform the whole 

routine, suitably dressed in colourful outfits. The 

evening ended with some Indian refreshments and 

social time. We were very pleased that a number of 

guests came to join us and we hope they enjoyed 

themselves. An interesting evening with good 

company and lots of laughter! Now, THAT is what the 

WI is all about! 

In total contrast, in August we will have a 

demonstration of knife and tool sharpening from 

“Mr Norfolk Sharp” on our usual meeting night and 

later in the month, a bonus afternoon tea in Carole’s 

lovely garden on 16th August at 2.30, weather 

permitting. This WILL involve jam – and scones, but 

not Jerusalem!!! As always, visitors or prospective

Beachamwell Fete and Country Fair 

What better way to end the summer holidays than at 

a Fete and Country Fair in one of the area’s prettiest 

villages? This event is being held on the village green 

Beachamwell from 12 noon to 5pm on Saturday 1 

September, next to the picturesque thatched church 

of St Mary’s. 

Fete and Country Fair favourites include a Dog Show 

and Clay Pigeon Shoot. There will be a number of 

traditional games and activities for you to enjoy 

including a coconut shy, hook the duck, children’s 

activities, a duck lottery, tractor pulling and egg 

throwing – something to keep the whole family 

entertained. 

Beachamwell Bric-a-Brac Marquee is a legendary 

place for picking up bargains, and if you want to treat 

yourself to something special, or need a gift for a 

friend or family member, there will be stalls selling a 

wide range of work by local artists and crafts people. 

Local groups like the WI and Book Group will also 

have stalls 

If you get hungry or thirsty you can treat yourself to 

a barbecue, teas and homemade cakes, authentic 

Indian food and delicious ice cream – not to mention 

the bar tent which will be serving real ale, wine and 

soft drinks.

Just Hair Coffee Morning 

We would like to to say a huge thank you to everyone 

who helped and supported our coffee morning on 

Wed 25th June in the Assembly Rooms Swaffham in 

aid of the National Autistic Society. Your never ending 

generosity is amazing, supporting every fundraising 

event that we organise. We are very fortunate to 

have such wonderful customers, friends and family 

and all your efforts together with the brilliant match 

funding from Barclays made possible by our fantastic 

friend Mark Jackson of the Fakenham branch means 

we raised an amazing £2,500. We cannot thank 

everyone enough.

Just Hair London Marathon Run 

Many of you will know that our fundraising effort 

for 2018 -2019 is focused on our London Marathon 

run in April 2019. We are running for the National 

Autistic Society, a charity very close to our hearts 

as our niece Lucy has an 8 year old son Cole who is 

Autistic. I along with Tanya, Terry our son, John Higgs 

and Lucy are now in training in readiness for next 

year. Our target is £15,000 -£20,000 which if we can 

reach it would bring the total we have raised over 

the last 34 years, to £300,000, for many different 

charities. We started fundraising in 1984 after I 

was diagnosed with Breast Cancer at the age of 29. 

We have many events planned during the next few 

months including our flagship charity ball at Lynford 

Hall, Mundford. on Saturday 27th November 2018. 

We are very nearly sold out already so if anyone

Flower Festival at Swaffham Parish Church 

Held every two years the festival has attracted 

widespread acclaim for its displays and tableaux. 

It opens on Friday 24th August at 10am and 

continues until Monday 27th . Admission is free and 

programmes and refreshments will be available. On 

Friday 24th at 7.30pm the Phoenix Singers will give a 

concert in the church. Performing with them will be 

the soprano Amber Batten and guests. On Sunday 

26th at 6pm there will be a Songs of Praise service.

Swaffham & Litcham Home Hospice 

Swaffham & Litcham Home Hospice Fundraisers held 

their “Relay Together” event on Sunday 17th June 

at Swaffham Rugby Club 

on North Pickenham Road, 

Swaffham. The event took 

the form of a sponsored 

walk round the lower pitch 

at the club. Approximately 

25 teams took part with 

the walk starting at 13.30 

and finishing at 16.00. 

There were also stalls, a 

bouncy castle, slide and 

BBQ. In addition, our 

Summer Draw took place 

which commemorated 

the fact the Home Hospice celebrates its 30th 

anniversary this year. The draw offered 30 prizes, the 

majority of which were donated by local businesses 

and clubs and tourist attractions across Norfolk. 

Adrian Adcock, chair of the Home Hospice 

Fundraising Committee commented that it had 

been a brilliant day enjoyed by those attending and 

it is expected that the event will have raised in the 

region of £3500 once all sponsorship monies are to 

hand. We would like to thank all of the teams who 

took part and the many people who supported 

and sponsored the event. Thanks are due to the 

Swaffham Rugby Club who allowed the Home 

Hospice the use of their facilities, to Pot of Gold for 

providing music for the majority of the afternoon, 

to the stallholders for their support, to Subway for 

water provision for the walkers and to Bookers in 

King’s Lynn for their generous donation of items for 

the BBQ and refreshment stalls. 

Thanks are also due to the members of the 

Fundraising Committee who put much effort into 

ensuring that the event would be the success it 

undoubtedly was. 

The Swaffham and Litcham Home Hospice 

Fundraising Committee work throughout the year 

organising events but we also receive support from 

within the community and from members of the 

public who organise their own events to raise funds 

for the Home Hospice. With this in mind, two events 

to share with you are: 

On Sunday 2nd September, 5pm to 8pm, the singing 

and entertainer duo ‘Back to Back’ will be at Castle 

Acre Village Hall. Entrance including tea, coffee and 

cake, is £5. Thanks to Libby Boulton for organising this 

event and kindly donating all proceeds to the Home 

Hospice. Swaffham & District Lions will be selling 

tickets for their annual ‘trolley dash’ at Swaffham 

Tesco on 12th, 13th and 14th October. The draw 

will take place on 14th October at Swaffham Tesco 

and a date for the trolley dash will be organised with 

the winner. Thanks go to Swaffham & District Lions, 

for this year choosing Swaffham and Litcham Home 

Hospice Support to be the beneficiary of this event. 

We hope both events are a success and that many of 

our supporters go along or buy tickets. If you would

Swaffham Swimming Pool Group 

Members of Swaffham Swimming Pool group are 

delighted to announce that we have been granted 

charitable status. From now on we will 

be known as Swaffham Swimming 

Pool CIO. The group is registered 

charity number 1178956. 

The group has also had a 

challenging meeting with officers of 

Breckland Council and also Sport 

England, who still need convincing that there is 

enough interest in a pool in Swaffham. But we shall 

continue our campaign - the plans are very exciting. 

Swaffham Voices 

Greetings to all old and new choir members. 

You may have heard the sad news that The Rainbow 

Community Choir has now disbanded. However, fear 

not, you'll be thrilled to learn that we have risen 

again with a new name and a new choir leader. 

So, welcome to Swaffham Voices, a brand new choir 

with an exciting new range of songs, including folk, 

blues, country and western and maybe a bit of gospel 

thrown into the mix!! We are so looking forward to 

welcoming and working with our very talented new 

choir leader. Our new term commences on Tuesday 

18th September at 7.30 at our usual venue, Swaffham 

Community Centre. There are 13 familiar faces in the 

new choir who would love to see "the old faces and 

friends" back amongst us and also any new comers. 

So, do come along on the 18th September to see 

what's on offer - it may be the kind of new choir you 

are looking to join. It is a completely free session, 

open to everyone and a great chance for us all to 

meet up again.

In contrast to the talk by Rosie Wood in May about 

commercial vegetable 

growing, Charlotte 

Philcox spoke at the 

June meeting about 

‘getting the most from 

your veggie plot’. This 

was a return visit by 

Charlotte who, as 

usual, had lots of tips. 

She grows her veg in 

plots no larger than 

12x4 feet with straw 

between for kneeling 

and walking on. Her 

favourite tool is a lady’s border fork as she does 

not believe in digging because it disturbs the 

worms and microscopic creatures which live in 

the top 4inches and are essential for healthy soil. 

A light ‘tickle’ and a good mulch before the next 

rotational crop is all that is required. Charlotte 

is also a fan of experimenting with non-garden 

related items, such as old oven racks. Among other 

uses these can be laid on newly sown ground to 

prevent digging by cats and birds. Mice can also 

be deterred from eating your peas if you place 

holly leaves around them. 

Sow a few lettuces every two weeks for successive 

harvesting but not after mid-summer’s day. 

Thereafter go for the Oriental greens such as Pak 

Choi. If you want to store strawberries through 

the winter don’t freeze the whole fruit as they 

only go soggy when defrosted. Try blitzing them 

in a blender and freezing the puree in small pots. 

Charlotte’s maxim for vegetable growing is to grow 

what you enjoy eating and what is most expensive 

in the shops. She also advocates being brave and 

trying something new. 

The previous Sunday was our annual flower show. 

Despite competition from England’s match in the 

World Cup, there were over 200 entries and praise 

from the judges for the high standard. Best in Show 

went to Jeanne Flynn for her imaginative ‘flower 

arrangement in a saucepan’. The tombola and 

plant stall sold out and the refreshment counter 

did a roaring trade. Thank you to everyone who 

helped and, in particular, the Flower Show Group 

who are responsible for organising the event.

Local author at Ceres Bookshop 

With the recent launch of ShopAppy to raise the 

importance and profile of using local businesses 

it is good to know that it is possible to buy books 

by local authors. One such author is Jan Foster - 

Bartlett. She is a member of the Phoenix writers, a 

writing group who meet once a month in Swaffham 

and have a waiting list for new members. The group 

first began life in 2009 when Kelvin Jones a then 

Norfolk based author put on a number of creative 

writing workshops at the Green Parrot. After the 

workshops the group adjourned to Ceres Bookshop 

for tea and cake. Jan says she never imagined back 

then that she would see her books sitting on the 

shelf. Her first novel Echoes at Greysmead and its 

sequel Revenge at Greysmead are set in the fictional 

village of Greysmead where after her divorce, Alison 

Greenways buys a dilapidated property that was 

once part of an old Abbey complex. Through ghostly 

encounters she slowly uncovers the events that the 

village has held secret for nearly five hundred years 

and learns of the tragic love story of Mary. Their 

worlds slowly connect until past and present finally 

meet with terrifying consequences.The sequel takes 

place fifteen years later. Both books are available to 

buy in Ceres Bookshop along with other books by 

local authors.

Hank Wangford is playing for us at the Memorial Hall 

on 29th June at 7.30pm. Hanks music is never glitzy, 

shiny, sweet end of country, he’s more grimestone 

than rhinestone. The show is full of fun and will 

appeal to non-country fans too. Hank’s band, The 

Lost Cowboys, is full of brilliant instrumentalists 

who love to play together. This is a concert not to 

miss, tickets via Ticketsource or Bright and Beautiful 

Flowers.

show was simply fabulous and we’ve been promised 

a bill of up and coming and established performers

Congratulations to the 70 or more voluntary 

organisations who have taken it on themselves to 

link up together and form the new ‘about Dereham’ 

group, with the aims of making Dereham a better

REMEMBERING AND MARKING THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF 

THE END OF WW1 - THE SWAFFHAM POPPY DISPLAY 

This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the end of WW1 

I AM INVITING THE WHOLE TOWN TO JOIN IN AND HELP US CREATE A 

SPECIAL POPPY DISPLAY 

In conjunction with the Towns branch of the British Legion we want to create the opportunity for the 

whole of our community to mark this special time. I also hope that our neighbouring villages will support 

this display. From the beginning of October through to Remembrance Sunday there will be the 

opportunity for you individually or collectively to add your poppy to the display or add larger poppy 

panels that you have created. 

Our schools will be participating with there own creative displays and I hope that as many as possible of 

our local organisations/clubs/charities/business will want to add their own parts to our display, 

for example this can include knitted poppies. 

There will be opportunities to add to both external and internal display. So some can be suitable to 

withstand the weather whilst others can be displayed internally in places such as the church, 

shop windows etc

Swaffham Rotary Club 

President’s Corner 

Just a month ago we had our Annual 

Handover Ceremony at the Swaffham 

Golf Club when I donned the chain for 

the next year.It is a tremendous honour to lead this 

great Rotary Club this year - and with President-Elect 

Steve Ward to celebrate our 50th Anniversary that I 

referred to in last month’s column. 

Since then we have held our annual Strawberry Tea 

for the elderly and infirm at The Maltings Residential 

Home in Cley Road. This was organised again by our 

Rotarian Jeanette Langner who worked so hard to 

arrange this event with support from the Club of 

course but it involved a great deal of hard work ( 

for instance she personally interviewed 57 invitees). 

Rotarian Peter Waddison from The King’s Lynn 

Priory Rotary Club provided excellent music and had 

everyone laughing with his humour. We look forward 

to organising this event again next year. 

My theme this year is The Environment. Due to 

rising global temperatures there is a threat to us all, 

but especially the underprivileged and vulnerable 

members of society in the world. Therefore we need 

to protect our natural resources and so as a Club 

we wish to make Environmental issues part of our 

service agenda this year. We intend to plant trees 

where we find the right locations and demand. One 

of our intentions as part of our 50th Anniversary 

celebrations is to Plant 50 trees in Swaffham and 

District. 

We are very happy to support The Town Team and 

the Iceni Partnership in the exciting Community 

Garden & Picnic Area at the end of Campingland due 

to take place this July. 

We were so disappointed, as so many people in 

Swaffham were, at the sudden closure of The Green 

Britain Centre, making the staff suddenly redundant. 

We had three functions planned there. It was a 

significant and important icon for Swaffham and we 

hope that all is not lost for the future.Similarly it has 

had an effect on the excellent Garden Science Trust. 

This is an educational Charity Trust which does so

much for so many people needing their services and 

those with special needs - to develop a wide range 

of life skills through gardening, science and crafts. 

Behind the Green Britain Centre they work in a large 

organic garden, with a Portacabin classroom and 

office. There is an Apple Orchard with rare Norfolk 

varieties and is a National treasure and they work 

with The Escape Project who are also affected by the 

closure.Both organisations need everyone’s help and

Parkruns 

On Saturday 26th May the very first Swaffham 

parkrun commenced at 9am on the field adjacent 

to the Nicholas Hamond Academy, in Brandon Road, 

Swaffham. Parkruns are held throughout the country 

on Saturday mornings and they are FREE. 

I am a participant in the

and I have been 

surprised to see how 

many different age 

groups take part. The 

event is well organised 

and although there 

are `serious` runners, 

there are also some 

who walk and steady 

jog the 5K course. 

It would be encouraging 

to see more coming along to the NHA on a Saturday 

morning at 9am especially whilst we are having 

such lovely weather at the moment. Thank you to 

all those folk who give their time to volunteer on 

Saturday mornings so that me and other like minded 

people can enjoy this FREE event also at the same 

time (and more importantly) getting exercise.

The evening started with the traditional salute being 

taken by Major General Sir William Cubitt KCVO CBE, 

Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Norfolk followed 

by the Band of the Grenadier Guards parading in the 

Market Place, displaying excellent musical timing 

and marching precision. This was the first visit for the 

Grenadier Guards to Swaffham and they have said 

how appreciated and welcomed they felt, expressing 

a wish to come back again in the future. 

The evening concluded with a rousing concert in 

the Church of St Peter & St Paul, featuring music 

and singing from the war years, modern musical 

theatre, big band swing and closing with the music 

of the last night of the proms. It was a warm sunny 

evening and the people of Swaffham turned out in 

their multitudes to watch, remember and celebrate 

the occasion. 

On behalf of the Royal British Legion, Swaffham 

Branch and Swaffham Town Council we would like 

to thank all our wonderful volunteers who helped 

organise and support the delivery of the event, not 

to mention the huge clean up exercise. Your support 

really helped make this a wonderful event to mark 

such an incredible occasion.

Greetings from the allotments. 

What a wonderful June and early July we have had, 

however, with the excessive heat, (up to 35 degrees 

in my garden), the plants and produce that were 

gaining ground after the monsoon rains and cold 

have struggled. Our strawberries were wonderful 

but over and done within a couple of weeks, and the 

potatoes that were put in late have really come to 

nothing. No doubt we should have been continuously 

watering as they do on the fields but there is a limit 

to how many watering cans one is prepared to carry 

I’m afraid the peas took priority this season. 

We had the judging of the Best Kept Allotment on 

the 12th July; Our President Roger Trowell assisted 

Brenda East with the judging this year. The winners 

will be announced at the Afternoon Tea on the 

9th September, 3pm in the Assembly rooms. All 

members welcome. Our next get together is the BBQ 

11th August. 

I am delighted to report that our pigeon is again 

nesting in the vine on our plot. I say nest, but looking 

at the random placing of about 10 twigs I really don’t 

know how the eggs are staying in place but she is 

sitting there quite oblivious to the danger of the 

slightest movement causing total collapse. Perhaps 

that’s how they build their nests and she’s not just a 

slovenly house builder? 

We have Henry the Eighth to thank for the wonderful 

selections of fruit in England today. He employed a 

Master Gardener to travel abroad and bring back 

the newest and best varieties of apples, pears and 

cherries growing in Europe. In 1533 numerous grafts 

were brought over and a model orchard at Teynham 

in Kent was formed. Hence the beginnings of what is 

now called the Gardens of England. 

We hope that August will be a good month for the 

children enjoying their school holidays and for the 

gardeners. There are raspberries, blackberries and 

sweetcorn to look forward to. The beetroot is looking 

good for pickling. Last year I bottled some pears with 

a stick of vanilla and a Star Anise, truly scrumptious 

with a custard or cream. 

We still have starter plots available. These are ideal 

for pensioners who just want to grow a small amount 

of produce; young families, who don’t have time to 

spend on a large area; or just people who have never 

gardened before. Your only commitment is monthly 

so should you decide gardening is not for you then 

a month’s notice is all that is needed. For further

Swaffham History Group 

A preview of the cover of the Group’s latest booklet, 

due to be published shortly and available for sale in 

the museum. 

The research was prompted by the ‘worst winter on 

record’, forecast back in October 2017 - and was not 

completed until the end of April 2018 as we waited 

for the winter to finish . The cover picture was taken 

by a local photographer when, officially, we should 

have been in Spring. 

As the weather has been a favourite topic of 

conversation for centuries, it has been interesting 

to look back at records of past winters, springs, 

summers and autumns with some rather unusual 

events recorded. There are also many photographs.

Swaffham Arts 

This autumn we are presenting an ambitious Festival 

of Baroque Music. The first concert is at 7.30 on 

Saturday 22 September in Swaffham Assembly 

Rooms and will feature the acclaimed Norwich 

Baroque Ensemble (Strings and Harpsichord). 

The September programme includes contributions 

from France (Lully and Rameau), England (Handel 

and Purcell) and Italy, with a concerto for two violins 

by Vivaldi, a concerto in 7 parts by Locatelli plus the 

much loved Canon by Pachelbel. 

This will be followed at 3pm on Sunday 21 October 

by The Norwich Baroque Quartet (2 Violins, Cello and 

Harpsichord) and at 3pm on Sunday 18 November by 

Tale Dolce Musica (Soprano, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon 

and Harpsichord). 

A Season Ticket for all three concerts is available in

Christian Aid Thank You. 

On Saturday 19 May a street collection was organised 

in Swaffham on behalf of Christian Aid. Thanks to 

the generous support of the people of Swaffham 

and surrounding villages a total of £641 was raised 

to help boast much needed funds for Christian Aid.

for their invaluable help on the day.

Swaffham Jazz Club 

Despite our July session clashing with the England 

v Columbia match we were only a little down 

on our normal attendance. The line up was: Lee 

Vasey, guitar: Pete Oxborough, saxes and clarinet: 

Ian Hireson, electric bass: Matt Furnace, drums: 

Stella Goodey, vocals. With the match screened in 

the adjoining bar, as people went in and out we 

were kept informed of England’s progress. Almost 

as a reflection of the early game, the band played 

several slow tempo numbers such as Autumn 

Leaves and The Nearness of You (which I swear was 

the slowest tempo ever at the Club). 

Then England went a goal up with a great cheer from 

the bar. This was the signal for the band to launch 

into I Get a Kick Out of You. Then disaster! Columbia 

equalised at the end of normal time and Stella sang 

Here’s That Rainy Day with the opening line Maybe 

I should have saved those leftover dreams... 

We were facing extra time and the dreaded 

prospect of a penalty shoot out! Pete then gave a 

soulful rendition of Stranger on the Shore, a perfect 

expression of being left out of important goings on 

elsewhere, which was the prospect facing England. 

Next up during the slog of extra time, Stella aptly 

gave us Work Song, along with Dancing Cheek 

to Cheek which is what the Columbians were 

attempting with the English players whenever they 

got into their penalty area, such as when Wilmer 

Barrios headbutted Jordan Henderson. 

With everyone in the Club so caught up in the game 

by then, the penalty shoot out saw a constant 

stream of visitors to the bar coming back with the 

latest score, such that Stella started updating the 

score in her lyrics as she went along. 

Finally the good news came through - we had won 

and the whole place erupted! There were chants 

of “Football’s Coming Home!” Strangely enough 

Stella had told us all that coming back to Swaffham 

after many years was like coming home for her. 

She was brought up here and started singing at 

the age of three. She recalled her first paid gig at 

Grady’s Hotel, which used to be at the top of North 

Pickenham Road. Looking back at some of the 

musical highlights, I particularly liked Lee’s subtle 

intro to My Funny Valentine, Pete’s cool alto solo 

in The Nearness of You (more Columbian goings 

on in the box?) and Stella’s excellent timing in I’ve 

Got You Under my Skin. My only regret is that Stella 

sang I’m in Heaven a bit too early in the second half. 

As the last number it would have been perfect! 

Next up is Melody Brooker, vocals with her Trio.

Wissey U3A 

At the monthly meeting on the 5th July Sue Gattuso 

gave a very interesting presentation about Swaffham’s 

Museum and explained why it may be re-named 

Swaffham Heritage Centre. Sue’s presentation 

illustrated how the volunteers recorded, stored and 

displayed many of the artefacts held there. Sue’s 

presentation was followed by the conclusion of the 

Wissey U3A’s 23rd AGM when Sylvia Murray was 

nominated and voted by the members present to be 

the Honorary Secretary for 2018-19. 

On 2nd August there will be a presentation by 

Georgie Bell about Swaffham’s Merle Boddy Centre. 

In June the Science and Technology group visited 

Langham Glass in Fakenham when they were given 

a front line demonstration of different hand blowing 

techniques for their general range of glass products 

from toy decorative elephants to large crystal 

decanters. 

On 9th July the group were treated to a presentation 

by Professor Richard Harvey about Artificial 

Intelligence: what is it, how is it done and what is it 

used for? Professor Harvey is from the Department 

of Computer Sciences at the University of East 

Anglia. Since the closure of the Green Britain Centre, 

members of the Science and Technology group meet 

in Swaffham’s Community Centre on the second 

Monday of each month. 

Other sporting activities include Short-mat bowling, 

Soft-ball Tennis, Table Tennis and Croquet. There is 

also a Garden-visits group a Rambling group and a 

Walking group. Alternatively, you may prefer to relax 

with the Meditation group or listen to a selection of 

Classical Music or read Poetry with other like minded 

members of the Wissey U3A. 

If these activities interest you, or if you have a hobby 

or pastime which you would like to share with others 

why not make enquires about joining the Wissey 

U3A. The U3A meets monthly at Holme Hale’s 

Pavilion on the first Thursday from 09.45 until 12.00 

mid-day. 

The U3A is an international movement whose aims are 

the education of retired members of the Community 

or those in their ‘Third Age’ of life. U3A membership 

is open to any individual who by definition is not in 

full-time gainful employment, so anyone working 

‘part-time’ can also apply for membership.

From the Mayor’s Parlour 

This is my second article since taking over in 

May 18. I have now chaired three full council 

meetings with full and interesting agendas. 

I would invite you to attend our meetings. 

Although meetings can be seen as boring, 

why don’t you give us a try and come to see first hand 

what we get up to. There is an opportunity for you to 

ask questions which, if we can not answer then, we will 

always get back to you. Over the last 2 months I have 

sought to meet as many local people as possible and as 

my diary permits I will seek to attend any requests from 

our towns group/ organisations/charities. This could be 

in response to specific issues or just a general catch up. 

Our shops in town face challenging times, sometimes 

because of the rise of internet shopping. We have our 

‘Shop Appy’ initiative and I hope many of you are using it 

as well as supporting our local traders. Barclays Bank have 

now left the town and still no news as to who may take 

over the building. We were all shocked at the news about 

the Green Britain centre closing suddenly. We had no 

prior warning of this. The building is owned by Breckland 

Council and we are in contact with them to see if we 

can provide any input/assistance in looking at the future 

of the site. Many informal ideas have been floated but 

it is early days. The organisation known as ‘The Garden 

Science Trust’ is affected by the closure and the Council 

will seek to support them during this difficult time. A 

general refurbishment of the actual Buttercross and the 

surrounding area will shortly be getting underway. It will 

impact on parts of the central parking area for a period 

so do expect some limitations at times. On the subject 

of parking we still await from Breckland a start date for 

the new arrangements which will introduce limitations 

to the amount of time you can park in the Market Place 

and Pedlars car park. The restrictions are for a trail period 

and then a permanent decision will be made. One of the 

prime intentions behind the scheme is to increase the 

turnover of vehicles and stop all day parking. More short 

term spaces will then be available. At the moment the 

Town’s Leisure Centre (located at The Nicholas Hamond 

Academy) remains closed. A discussion has started looking 

at the overall issue of leisure facilities for Swaffham. There 

seems a general desire to have better/larger facilities 

and it is hoped that proposals can be developed over the 

coming months. 

I think we all can agree that the recent visit from the 

Grenadier Guards was a resounding success and thanks 

go to the British Legion and Council staff for organising 

this brilliant event. The concert in the Church that evening 

was a very moving event and the packed audience had 

an evening to long remember. Although we can’t always 

attract large events to the Town I really would like to hear 

your views about what we realistically could be looking 

at to help attract more visitors to the town and generally 

promote us. If you have ideas or views on this do please 

write to me at the Town Hall. 

A further date for you is the August Bank Holiday Sunday – 

The Classic Car show and Family Fun day to be held at our

In Touch With Your Town 

‘In Touch with your Town’ is put 

together by the Town Clerk Richard 

Bishop or occasionally by the Deputy 

Town Clerk Claire Smith. It deals with 

some of the most topical items of 

the day and the odd item where the Council want 

to share information with the Town. 

Buttercross And Town Centre – work commencing… 

By the time you are reading this newsletter, you 

will see some fencing has been placed around 

‘The Buttercross’ this is to carry out preliminary 

work on some Town Centre improvements due 

to start in week commencing 13th August, for a 

period of 15 weeks. Quinn Construction Ltd are the 

appointed contractors for some necessary repairs 

and refurbishment to ‘the Buttercross’ itself, some 

relaying of cobbles to make the area flatter, reducing 

trip hazards and more accessible to use. Removing 

unsightly electrical cables or structures, replacing 

with easily available sockets and subtle lighting. 

There will be new seating placed around the area 

of ‘The Buttercross’, replacing previous seating 

removed recently as part of the preparation for this 

scheme. Other improvements in the Town Centre 

will be publicly available ‘Wi-Fi’, two electric car 

charging points, 6 double electrical sockets for use 

by Market traders and/or events within the Town 

Centre and finally 6 new street lights, to make the 

central Car Park a well lit and more inviting place 

to be. The £200,000+ contract is mainly funded 

from Section 106 money from the Millngate/Tesco 

development, which has been in Town for some 

four years now. The Council have until the end of 

2019 to draw down any remaining money. There are 

still grant applications pending, and news on these 

will be followed up in the coming weeks. The Town 

Council look forward to bringing our Town Centre 

into the 21st Century and sincerely hope that 

these measures will provide opportunities in what 

is an ever-changing Market Place and to enable 

Businesses, Community Events and our Traditional 

Market the platform to thrive. 

Classic Car Show & Fun Day 

It’s time for the 2nd Annual Classic Car Show & Fun 

Day, organised between Swaffham Town Council & 

The Norfolk Vehicle Club. Book the date in your diary.

Put The Flags Up…Extra 

Further to the information regarding the flags, the 

Town Council have taken delivery of an additional 

5 flags and flag poles for the Town Centre, as we 

had more consent forms signed than we had flags 

the first time round. The message from last month 

is reiterated to any of the businesses in the Town 

Centre, if you have a flag pole holder on your building 

with no flag, all we need is for you to sign a consent 

form, and we can put up a flag for you. The flags 

and poles remain the property of the Town Council, 

and the Council believe that it sends out a positive 

message to people passing through the Town, that 

Swaffham is open for business. If you would like to 

fly a flag on your premises, please contact the Town 

Hall to get a consent form signed. The Council have 

agreed to have the flags up from the 1st May to the 

30th September, and at other special occasions in 

between. 

Christmas Light Switch-On and Christmas Market 

Don’t forget that later this year is the Christmas 

Light Switch-On and Christmas Market which will 

be on a Sunday once more. Sunday 2nd December 

from 12 noon until 6pm will be the Christmas 

Market and the Switch-On taking place at 5pm.

In My Back Yard 

The Swaffham Neighbourhood Plan is a communityled 

document for guiding the future development 

of our Town. It is about the use and development 

of land over the next 20 years. The plan will set out 

a vision and aspirations for the future development 

of the Town and will be an important document that 

will help influence and control the way our town 

changes in the future, including any new housing 

developments. This is the seventh in a series of 

Articles designed to give you the latest information 

on how we are progressing with the development 

of our Neighbourhood Plan. Following the last 

Consultation events, the Steering group worked 

on all the ideas and thoughts expressed to reach a 

point of formulating the actual policies which will 

form the “Core” of the plan. The policies have to 

be worded precisely as they are subject to scrutiny 

at Breckland Council level and an independent 

examiner. We had a preliminary discussion with the 

“Planners” at Breckland because as you remember 

our plan has to be consistent with the “Breckland 

local plan” which is in its final stages. Some helpful 

comments were received from them which enabled 

us to refine the policies again. Our project manager 

has now prepared the first full draft version of 

the Neighbourhood Plan. This was seen by Town 

Councillors and sent to Breckland to get their 

subsequent comments/observations. At a meeting 

on the 9th July Councillors made some more 

changes reflecting those comments. On the 16th 

July the Council “signed off” the draft document 

and printed copies. A public consultation day was 

held in the Assembly rooms on the 18th July running 

from 10am to 7pm. This started a pre-submission 

consultation period from then to 31st August 18 

This is therefore an important time for you to digest 

the contents and raise comments/suggestions. 

These can be provided on line if you wish via the 

Council website. At the end of the consultation 

period the Council will make final amendments and 

submit to Breckland for independent evaluation. 

After such independent evaluation and checking 

against Breckland’s Local Plan, the absolute final 

document will come out to a TOWN REFERENDUM 

to seek widespread support and adoption. 

WE want all our town to support the Plan. 

Remember it strengthens our position locally in 

helping to determine planning applications and 

what shape we want our town to develop to over 

the next 20 years.
