developed and often equally
unconsciously applied. The way in
which we study, as it is expressed in
our reading, note taking and writing
methods, is something which can be
reflected upon, analysed,
experimented with and changed, but
it is like changing any other attitude
and demands that we be self-aware
and prepared to practice with new
approaches. Perhaps it could be
argued that effective study should
always be based on this high level of
awareness and participation. Too
often, students see learning as
something which involves them in
becoming a kind of sophisticated
recording device rather than
someone involved in developing,
understanding and making meaning.
FINALLY, the cautionary note about
the workload at the Institute.
You will be assessed within a system
which is referred to as continuous
assessment. This means that your
laboratory work, tutorial work,
project work and so on may all be
taken into account in calculating your
mark at the end of the year. In
addition, there will be an end of year
examination and perhaps a midterm
examination as well. Such an
arrangement means that you are
involved in a fairly consistent work
load – you cannot take things easy
for most of the year and then work
feverishly for the last few weeks.
Many people succeed in school
examinations by using this approach
and they are often caught out by the
different distribution of work at third
level.
