What talent can you discover within Drawn to the Valley? 

All the artists in this year’s Open Studios event are 

looking forward to welcoming you. We are all used 

to seeing reproductions of art but there is something 

very different about original artwork and talking to 

the artist who produced it. If you haven’t visited an 

Open Studio before, here is a summary of what you 

might expect: 

What is the Open Studios event? 

There is no charge to visit the studios – artists are 

more than happy that you just come and look. They 

will of course be delighted if you want to buy 

their work! 

It is a chance to meet artists in their studios or 

exhibition spaces throughout the beautiful Tamar 

Valley. You can buy art direct from the artist and find 

out more about how and why they produce their 

work. Take time with your visits and if you want to 

know anything just ask the artist. 

Opening dates and times – these vary so please check 

the entry for each studio that you plan to visit – if in 

doubt, contact the artist before you travel. 

Travelling around the area – there is more 

information about travelling to and around the Tamar 

Valley on page 58.

there will be roadside signs and arrows, with our 

Drawn to the Valley logo, to lead you to each venue. 

Accessibility

Payment 

Generally by cash or cheque but credit/debit cards 

are also accepted subject to availability. A deposit will 

usually secure a piece of art work for you. There are 

often cards and small items for sale. 

Safety 

If you visit a working studio there may be chemicals 

and tools, so you should take particular care 

yourselves and supervise children carefully.

DRAWN TO THE VALLEY EVENTS 

The annual Drawn to the Valley Summer Exhibition took place at Tavistock Town Hall on 

1-5 August, when many of our group’s 160 professional artists exhibited their latest work. 

The exhibition showcases the wide variety of work produced by our diverse artists, so 

there’s always something for everyone to enjoy. Our thanks to our sponsors Jackson Stops 

and The Bedford Hotel for their generosity in launching our exhibition with a fantastic 

private view evening. 

From 24 July to 31 August 15 of our artists will have works in a themed Wildlife exhibition 

at Dartmoor Zoological Park, Sparkwell, Plymouth in the restaurant area, we are also 

running a couple of adult and children’s drop-in art workshops there during August. A 

wonderful way of highlighting the work of our artists, the beauty of the animals in the zoo’s 

care and of the conservation work they do. Normal admission charges apply. Please refer to

This exhibition is followed by our artists’ biggest event of the year, Open Studios, held 

from 22-30 September. Almost 100 artists are taking part and several of the studios are in 

Tavistock itself. 

In October, Drawn to the Valley are having their first ever exhibition in London, with 36 

artists exhibiting at ‘Drawn to London’ at the Royal Opera Arcade Gallery in Pall Mall on 

22-27 October. 

In November from the 17-25 we are back to the Tamar Valley Centre at Drakewalls near 

Gunnislake for our Winter Exhibition, which has an open theme encouraging smaller works, 

ideal for those planning Christmas gifts for loved ones or themselves.

I work in a variety of materials – plaster, enamels and printmaking – using 

textural surfaces as the key element running throughout. My principal 

inspiration comes from the industrial heritage of Cornwall, both land and sea 

based, from which I take shapes, colours and surfaces to make my designs.

Whilst his style of painting in watercolour is representative there is 

a leaning towards impressionism. Skies and atmosphere are strong 

influences; landscapes, estuary views and marine work feature strongly, 

but Simon also is interested in painting portraits and animals. His studio 

has magnificent views of the Tamar that connect strongly with his work.

charcoal. This year my work has developed using 

handmade Japanese papers, 18th century maps of London 

and old maps of the Tamar Valley, fused with Turner’s 

handwritten letters I’ve recently acquired from several

workshops, life drawing days, printmaking and residential 

courses.

My work has evolved from a great passion for exploring light, colour and 

texture. With Impressionism and the natural world as a constant inspiration, 

I create richly textured oil paintings using only a painting knife. It is important 

for the viewer to feel embraced by the scene, and for just a moment to 

stand by my side, drinking in the view. 

There are stairs to access the main area

provided where possible to ensure work 

can be viewed.

‘xieyi’ free-style Chinese painting with local Plymouth artist Li Xiao Bai. It is a

After spending many years developing my pen and ink drawing skills, I turned to 

painting in acrylics and mixed media. I am heavily influenced by the natural world from 

the microscopic to the largest, particularly landforms and geology. Both my paintings

Steve Crimlisk is a portrait artist based in Tavistock. Steve recognised his skill for drawing at a young 

age and has covered a range of subjects, predominantly being people and creatures. Horses have 

been a longstanding and much loved subject of Steve’s, and over time he has broadened the variety 

of his work. Living in such proximity to the beauty of Dartmoor has lent itself greatly to the themes 

of creatures and wildlife. Steve uses charcoal and pencil in most of his work, capturing not only 

likeness but also character and tangibility.

A Slade School of Fine Art graduate, I am a figurative painter preoccupied with the moment of intersection between the human 

presence and the natural world. Figures, animals, unexpected juxtapositions and shamanic transformations converge in a twilit 

world of urban and rural wastelands. Paintings of Bodmin and the Tamar feature in the work for sale in my studio nestled deep in 

the Tamar Valley.

atmospheric places. My Pagan Cats of Cornwall works are humorous, 

often irreverent. All my work is representational, influenced by Dufy, 

modern illustration, and classical artists.

My work is an ongoing investigation into the human presence and how we react 

to each other and the landscape that surrounds us. I enjoy experimenting in many 

mediums and image-making techniques whilst investigating the notion of merging 

abstract themes with figurative painting in 

a form of stylistic pluralism. Vanitas is the 

theme of my latest body of work.

Mysterious woodlands, dramatic seas, even the odd faerie folk, I’m finding more 

now that a lot of my paintings come from my imagination. I hope you enjoy the 

gorgeous colours of the acrylic inks and the wonderful marks created by all the

I take inspiration from the natural environment, particularly of the Tamar Valley 

and Dartmoor. I have long had an interest in plants, so it seems natural to 

combine this in my artwork, focusing more closely on individual leaves and foliage. I enjoy 

experimenting with different glazes, oxides and lustres which enhance the variety of clay 

bodies that I use, whether it’s porcelain, black, white or buff stoneware. 

There are three steps down to the garden and house. 

From A390 (centre of Gunnislake), opposite the Cornish Inn, at traffic lights, turn right if coming from Callington. In about 300m 

turn next left (triangle in road) and quick left again. Go approximately 40m then first right onto Tamar Way. Go right to the 

bottom. Parking is tight so it’s best to park above Crocker’s Row on Tamar Way. Alternatively, there is parking up in the village, it’s 

about a five-minute walk down.

I originally trained as an architect which perhaps explains my response to the places, shapes, colours and structures of Dartmoor

ABOUT US 

Drawn to the Valley provides a great network for artists, a way of keeping in 

touch and exhibiting work inspired by their passion for the beautiful Tamar 

Valley Area and beyond. 

Drawn to the Valley group is an artist led initiative, membership is open to 

professional artists and craftspeople living and/or working in the Tamar Valley 

area. Drawn to the Valley was formed by the artists themselves over 13 years 

ago, mainly as a support network, but also in order to promote the Tamar Valley 

Area, bringing the area of natural beauty to life through art. 

There are approximately 150 active members of the group today. Numerous 

individuals in the group are renowned nationally and internationally for their art 

work across a range of diverse art media both 2d and 3d. 

Long term and new members alike continue to be inspired by each other’s work, 

and are encouraged in their efforts to continue to grow creatively.

I hand-build functional ceramic work that is sculptural and tactile. I use a variety of methods 

such as soft slabs, coils and moulds and work in stoneware and porcelain clays. I am influenced by the changing light and landscapes of 

the local coastal and moorland environments and enjoy exploring surface colour and texture on the clay’s natural surface.

2018 Open Studios to Ian Heard, 

a founding member, past chairman 

and talented artist who sadly passed 

away this year. An illustrator and 

designer for over thirty years, Ian’s 

work appeared in publications in this 

country and abroad. He illustrated for 

books and magazines and had four books of his own published. 

Watercolour held the magic for Ian, sailing boats and the 

sea and remote farms inspired him, as did the Tamar river 

and countryside. His oil paintings were similarly inspired by 

his native landscapes. He produced work for galleries and 

private commissions and his Heard’s Design studio offered 

artists a dedicated fine art scanning and print service, and 

produced our Open Studios brochure for over 10 years. 

He will be greatly missed.

call my second home. Gold leaf has become one of my favourite 

highlights which adds to the style and colours I love to use with bright

images and my abstract work I also have a series of jazz 

influenced paintings which have been popular over the years. I have 

started having fun with my very own framing where I have carried 

across the gold leaf and art to give a new interesting look.

DRAWN TO THE VALLEY DRAWING DAYS 

Our Drawing Days are held throughout the year at 

multiple locations, providing an opportunity for our 

artists who normally work in solitude, the chance 

to come together and be inspired by one another 

and their surroundings. We welcome the public to 

come and meet us while we work as well!

As you can see Clare was willing to take a risk for 

her art…, but we are sure you will agree that the 

end result was well worth the wet feet! 

Our thanks to The Garden House, Yelverton, and 

the Pentillie Estate for their continued support 

in permitting our artists seasonal visits, and the 

other locations we visit on one off occasions which 

all help to inspire our work and allow working 

together en-plein air.
