Sponsoring the Ladies Luncheon Tournament I love giving back to my community and sponsoring the Ladies Luncheon Tournament is matter of pride for me. I love, also, the hive of activity with so many volunteers giving freely of their time, not to mention the food. It's so delicious. That is what impressed me most when I joined the Leaside Lawn Bowling Club, the volunteers I mean, who make this club a home. Over the previous 5 years of my sponsorship, I felt I should not compete myself as it would be rude to win and take the money I had donated for prizes, I mean really, what do you think? Well, many of you asked why I wasn't bowling in the tournament? After all, you've bowled with and against me and know that there was no way I would ever win the tournament, a game in Sunshine maybe, but not a tournament involving top competitors from other clubs. But you kept asking me why I wasn't bowling and, this year, Linda Davidson who so ably runs the Ladies Luncheon Tournament needed an extra competitor. So, with no fear of winning, I decided I would bowl and not knit or help in the kitchen while everyone else competed on the green. Then someone else dropped out and Mary Lou Richards joined the fray and guess who was my skip? Well, how do you not win when playing with the awesome Mary Lou Richards? My expertise with bowls (where's the bias?) kept Mary Lou to the bottom prize of $40, $20 each. But I want to say that I have given my $20 back to Linda and to the club. So, look out ladies, with a clear conscience, I'm giving fair warning that I am now in training mode and I will be back next year with Mary Lou as my skip. Let's see how big a contribution I can make back to the club in 2019! Have you seen my flyer? So many of you ladies are impressed with the flyer that I hand out at the tournament, I put a favourite recipe on it. (Food warms the heart, eh?) Last year I used my grandmother's authentic strawberry th shortcake, red and white, for Canada's 150. This year for the clubs 65 Anniversary, I made a jellied salad in green and yellow from my other grandmother's cookbook which was printed in 1953, the same year of birth for Leaside Lawn Bowling. I left a stack at the club but if you didn't get one, let me know, and I'll happily send it to you. It's a delicious and tangy accompaniment with pork and turkey, if I say so myself. Now where's my Grippo? Only eleven months left to train. Margaret Winter Greens and Property - Our greens have survived the extreme heat so far this summer. Thanks to Don McCowan for maintaining our mowers weekly by adjusting the height and reel to bedknife operation and to Eric Evans for removing the dew on our non-cutting days which helps to reduce disease. Due to the extreme heat we have not been able to verticut as often as we wanted. You may have noticed that the green carpeting has been removed from the east shed and the threshold cemented where the wood was rotting. Thanks to John Adams for doing this. Our new benches have been installed and really add to the beauty of our little paradise in Leaside. We are very fortunate to be to enjoy such a lovely space. Hello Lawn Bowlers! Your generosity of 161 pairs of socks, 7 Tim cards and $631.40 in cash for Tim cards and hand warmers has enabled Dorothy and me to be “... a rainbow in someone else’s cloud”, Maya Angelou. Merci, Grazie, Gracias, Arigato, Thank You - Whatever the language, your spirit of giving made Toasty Tootsies happen this winter! Each sock package will be personally delivered by us to the needy souls of Toronto! They will feel your kindness on their feet / hands, in their tummies, and in their hearts! As Dr. Seuss once said, “Unless someone like you cares an awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” You cared: you made a difference! Until next year, thank you. Linda Bishop & Dorothy Robertson Open Tournaments July was a busy Open Tournament month with Leaside hosting both the Ladies Luncheon, July 10 and Mixed Pairs, July 28. Both tournaments were successful with more teams and better weather than last year! Plus, Good greens, Great food and excellent volunteers! Teams travel from Exeter and Campbellford lawn bowling clubs and from across the GTA to attend our tournaments! Register at www.leasidebowls.ca or sign up as a team on the sign up sheet on the Open Tournaments bulletin board. Volunteers are needed in the kitchen, to set up the greens, run Share the Wealth, registration and scoring. Spectators are always welcome!
