WHEN SIX oak trees were
planted on the boundary of
Graeme and Diane Barber’s
Harewood property 34 years
Page 3 Page 14
HAD ENOUGH: Harewood resident Graeme Barber is tired of the effect large oak trees are having on his neighbourhood.
Massive oak trees ‘must go’
ago, they were told by the reserve
developer, “it won’t affect you.”
Now, the trees in Pasadena Reserve
are 16m tall, the equivalent
height of a five-storey building,
with a 15m spread.
Board
spar over
alcohol ban
proposal
• By Sophie Cornish
A SPLIT has emerged in a
community board over a bid to
extend alcohol restrictions.
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community
Board deputy
chairman Aaron
Campbell
told Nor’West
News last week
he would like
to see alcohol
bans extended
to include
areas such as
Elmwood Park,
Sam MacDonald
Roto Kohatu Reserve in Harewood,
and McLeans Island.
However, board chairman Sam
MacDonald contacted Nor’West
News to say other members on the
board, including himself, do not
support Mr Campbell’s view.
Mr MacDonald believes the board
needs to be careful about becoming
a “nanny-state” to residents and
“imposing unnecessary and
punitive rules when there doesn’t
appear to be an issue.”
“He is entitled to his view, but
that would mean taking away the
right for people who play touch
on Elmwood Park and have a
social beer, it would be restricting
that kind of stuff,” said Mr
MacDonald. •Turn to page 5
from the editor’s desk
I GET the feeling there is a bit of
competition brewing between Fendalton-
Waimairi-Harewood Community Board
chairman Sam MacDonald and the board
deputy Aaron Campbell (page 1).
The spark was Campbell’s views in
Nor’West News last week on an alcohol ban.
MacDonald was quick to let us know it wasn’t his or other
board members’ views. Nothing wrong with that of course.
MacDonald points out an alcohol ban at Elmwood Park could
have an impact on sports people.
There is an election coming in 2019 and I’ll bet both
MacDonald and Campbell - who come form different political
backgrounds - will put their hands-up to make it onto full
council. Testy times ahead?
$25k more for Redwood Plunket rooms
Asbestos and
black mould
discovered
• By Sophie Cornish
ASBESTOS AND “significant”
black mould has been found
in the earthquake-damaged
Redwood Plunket rooms,
increasing the cost of the repair
project by $25,000.
The repair work was originally
planned to be finished at the
end of June, but has now been
pushed back to November.
In June last year, Mayor Lianne
Dalziel questioned whether
repairing the old
building was in
the city council’s
best interests.
She said it was a
challenge to make
the decision to
Lianne
Dalziel
grant a further
$45,000 for the
project, which was
originally budgeted at $30,000,
as the city council was not
provided with a detailed report.
Ms Dalziel said the repairs
would only get the building to
67 per cent of the new building
standard.
“It will still be old, still be
MORE PROBLEMS: The refurbishment of the Redwood Plunket Rooms has hit more speed
bumps meaning a delay to the completion date and further costs.
unimproved, and still be poorly
insulated. It has old services and
contains significant inherent
maintenance issues,” she said.
However, Ms Dalziel said those
comments were made during
a debate when further funding
was granted for the repairs under
an amendment to the Annual
Plan that was not accompanied
by a staff report and the detailed
options.
A city council spokeswoman
said Ms Dalziel’s view was not
supported, but in her role as
mayor she supports the decision
that was made.
An extra $25,000 is required to
remove the asbestos and mould,
bringing the budget to $100,000.
A city council spokesman said
the process to get a contractor
has been delayed due to the
initial cost coming in over the
project’s budget allocation.
Once started the project is
expected to take three months
to complete. The building will
be home to a social worker, who
is funded by the Papanui-Innes
Community Board, and a
community gathering space.
When applying for additional
funding, the community board
said the facility was desperately
needed in the area.
Debris from trees
cause residents anguish
•From page 1
“These trees are depressing
for us due to the shading and
litter over many months of the
year. Four neighbours . . . have
to cope with copious quantities
of leaves, acorns and seedlings
generated by these oaks.”
However, city council staff
have told Mr Barber that the
trees are “perfectly healthy” but
he believes they need to look at
the bigger picture.
Mr Barber said the reserve
department has a strong priority
to protect trees.
“I’m dealing with people who
are placing trees in higher priority
than people . . . yes, that’s
their job and no one wants to see
healthy trees cut down but when
they’re the height of a five-level
building, there is a problem.”
Pasadena Pl resident Inez
Stevens purchased her home 12
years ago, when the trees were
much smaller, she said.
Now, the 91-year-old said she
has spent hundreds of dollars
paying a gardener to deal with
the leaves and someone else to
clear her gutters.
She fears for her health and is
afraid she may roll or break an
ankle, due to the acorns littered
on her property.
Following a complaint to
council last year regarding the
continual noise of acorns landing
on their roof, contractors
removed 5m branches overhanging
onto their property.
In his recent submission to the
community board, Mr Barber
asked when the rights and wellbeing
of people over shadow the
rights of healthy trees.
“That wrong decision needs to
be corrected by the removal of
these six trees. Something that’s
fit with context . . . the council
staff I have spoken to and the
community board agreed that
trees like that wouldn’t be
planted in a reserve of this size
these days,” he said.
City council acting manager
operations Ryan Rolston said
council now has a set of guidelines
in its infrastructure design
standards, which assist in tree
selection.
“It is unlikely council would
introduce this species of oak
presently unless requested by
residents.”
Mr Rolston said the trees are
healthy and protected by the
Christchurch District Plan.
“Consequently, council staff
have no reason to pursue their
removal.”
CHRISTCHURCH
STARTING 20 AUGUST 2018
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
COASTAL AND Burwood
wards councillors David East and
Glenn Livingstone have pledged
to fight against the annual New
Brighton fireworks event being
taken away from the pier.
They say they will work hard
to retain the New Brighton Guy
Fawkes in the area.
It comes after the event has
come under scrutiny from the
city council as part of a city wide
review of all council- run events.
It confirmed last week the
event would go ahead in November,
and if there were to be
any changes, they would not be
implemented this year.
Cr East said he would be debating
strongly and working hard to
persuade other city councillors of
the merit and worth of retaining
a display on the coast.
He said the items he would be
stressing is the event makes for
great viewing, all fireworks land
in the sea, making it easy to clean
up and no one is at risk of being
hit, he said.
“This has been an integral part
of the event programme of the
east,” he said.
Cr Livingstone said the fireworks
should stay.
“The question has been raised
before over safety concerns but
my view is wherever you hold
the fireworks there is going to be
safety concerns that need to be
addressed anyway.”
He said he suspects council
would be faced with a unanimous
resolution from the Coastal-
Burwood Community Board to
keep the event where it is.
City council community
support, governance and partnerships
John Filsell said last
week for a number of years it
has received feedback on traffic
management congestion.
But Cr East said while there is
difficulties for traffic exiting the
event, the east has been compounded
by ongoing roadworks.
Cr East suggested the event was
Chlorine removed from north-west water
• By Julia Evans
NEARLY 30,000 people in the
north-west of the city are now
drinking unchlorinated water.
Remedial works have been
completed and chlorination at
the Burnside and Farrington
pump stations has now stopped.
But city council water supply
improvements manager Helen
Beaumont said it would only be
possible to keep these stations
chlorine-free during low water
demand – such as winter.
“Where the demand exceeds
•From page 1
He said the matter has not
yet been discussed by the board
and a date has not been set for a
submissions committee to convene.
However, Mr Campbell said
the current alcohol ban in
Merivale, which could be extended,
is a night-time ban only,
so that wouldn’t be an issue.
“You aren’t going to be calling
the cops on people having a barbecue
and quiet beer . . . it’s up to
police to use their judgement to
enforce,” he said.
“It doesn’t have to be a fine, they
can confiscate the alcohol or give
them a verbal warning. No everyone’s
going to be hoarded off and
handcuffed, I think the nannystate
comment is dismissive and
not quite cognitive of what the
idea of the measure might be.”
Board member Shirish Paranjape
said he would like to discuss
the matter together with the
board before commenting on it.
Waimairi Ward councillor
Raf Manji said he has not seen
any formal report on the matter,
back into service and chlorination
would resume at that pump
station,” Ms Beaumont said.
chlorine
in their
water.
gramme may run in a bid to
continue minimising the need
for chlorination where possible.
The city council is working
through the same process at a
further five pump stations, to
stop chlorination in further
but it doesn’t appear as “a pressing
issue for those parks and
reserves.”
Fendalton Ward councillor
Jamie Gough said he agrees Mr
MacDonald and is surprised
Mr Campbell would express his
views before the board had a
formal or informal discussion
about it.
However, board member
David Cartwright said he wasn’t
aware of any huge issues in the
areas, if the police were to come
to the board about any, he would
parts of the north-west, central
and Ferrymead zones.
That would mean another
52,0000 people will have untreated
water this month, affecting
17,500 households in the
north-west, 6000 in the northeast
and 3700 in Woolston.
“Once the chlorination has
ceased at the seven pump stations
where the below ground well
heads can be isolated, the proportion
of water without chlorination
will increase from approximately
5 per cent to approximately 24 per
cent,” said Ms Beaumount.
Three pump stations in Prestons
and New Brighton, servicing
7500 households, avoided
chlorination altogether.
be the first to move the motion.
“My view is that it’s not
required right now but I’m not
totally ruling it off the table.”
Mr Cartwright said McLeans
Island has proved to be a problematic
area previously, for boy
racer activities, which have attracted
police attention.
City council is proposing
a new alcohol ban by-law to
replace the Alcohol Restrictions
in Public Places Bylaw 2009
which will automatically expire
in December.
STREET WISE is providing
help of a different kind to the
city’s homeless.
Merivale’s River Jayden
helped found the charity three
months ago while working as
a building apprentice in the
central city.
It provides food, clothes and
advocacy for those sleeping
rough.
“We’ve been going for three
months and it’s been pretty full
on,”said Ms Jayden, who is the
charity’s chairwoman.
“We give the guys coffee,
cakes, chats. It’s the fun stuff
mainly, but through that we
can also find out about their
situation and refer them on to
housing programmes or drug
and alcohol support.”
While homelessness is
“definitely” a big problem in the
central city, there is a less visible
homeless population living on
the outskirts which people may
be less aware of, Ms Jayden said.
“It’s those sleeping on
couches, in garages, in cars. It’s
a massive issue – 41,000 people
experience homelessness in
New Zealand. Of them, most
are living with whanau and
friends in overcrowded homes.”
She said a small percentage of
homeless people sleep on the
street.
Funding to support the work
Street Wise does is tight, but Ms
Jayden said “there are creative
ways to find the money to do
these projects. I’m confident we
can make it happen. We have a
good amount of support from
investors.”
A community pot luck for
homeless whanau was held
at non-profit cafe Exchange
Christchurch on Saturday.
The function, called
Everybody Eats provided free
haircuts, barista training,
care packages and baking,
motivational speakers, dinner
and an open jam session.
Ms Jayden said she eventually
wanted Street Wise to provide
a transitional facility to support
people to move into permanent
housing.
Burnside students vie for spelling bee titles
FIVE BURNSIDE High School
students will attempt to gain a
spot in the national spelling bee
grand-final today.
Top spellers from around the
central and upper South Island
have travelled to Christchurch
to compete at the regional semifinal.
Now in its 14 th year, the
New Zealand Spelling Bee is a
competitive spelling event aimed
at encouraging year 0-10 students
to improve their knowledge of
the English language, as well as
The year 9 and 10 students
competing today earned their
places out of a field of hundreds
of spellers from more than 100
secondary schools and colleges
around the country.
The competition began with
a written classroom test, which
found the top 200 spellers in the
country to go head-to-head in six
regional semi-finals.
The top three students from
each region will then compete for
the title of New Zealand Spelling
Bee champion at the national
final in Wellington on November
Spelling Bee Trophy and $5000
to put towards their academic
studies.
Founder Janet Lucas started
the competition in 2005 after
being inspired by Spellbound,
a documentary film about the
United States-based Scripps National
Spelling Bee. The calibre of
spellers improves every year, said
Ms Lucas. She cites a nail-biting
final last year which she describes
as “the toughest and longest competition
we have ever had”.
“The talent is stronger than
ever, and I can’t wait to find the
best spellers . . . the New Zealand
Spelling Bee is fiercely competitive
in a fun way. It’s a sport with
an intellectual focus – students
train hard and prepare to compete,
which is clear to see from
Gavin Topp
Gail Ker
Fire rages, homes at risk
the excellent results.”
The competition has grown
significantly since 2014, when
the Wright Family Foundation
became the programme’s sole
sponsor. About 800 primary
schools and intermediate schools
now sign up for the programme
every year. Pusillanimous was
the winning word at last year’s
national final, meaning ‘lacking
in courage.’ The national final
was won by St Margaret’s College
student Lucy Jessep.
Now
Fire rages, homes at risk
Readers respond to a
story about Ilam MP Gerry
Brownlee joining the
battle to get the Breens/
Harewood/Gardiners Rds
intersection upgraded to
lights and wants NZTA to
fund part of the upgrade
Gary Knight – In spite of
opposing views by some, the
installation of traffic lights at
the 10-lane convergence of the
Breens Rd, Gardiners Rd and
Harewood Rd intersection would
be a pro-active step. Placed at
94 of the 100 most dangerous
Christchurch intersections, and
at close proximity to Breens
Intermediate and other schools
within a 1km distance heralds
the priority for these lights. Planning
roles of NZTA encompasses
investment in transport activities
inclusive of local New Zealand
roads. This would therefore
surely deem funding for this
electronic installation to be the
sole responsibility of this crown
entity as opposed to inclusion of
revenue from any long-term city
council plan. Within this context
and condoned by Aaron Keown
and Gerry Brownlee, the installation
of lights at this volatile
intersection should be sanctioned
from a safety community perspective.
Ross Smith – Don’t let
Brownlee near it, It will end up
costing billions.
Tiffany Cavanaugh – The
intersection does not have the
traffic through it to merit a light.
Roundabout maybe, but certainly
not a light.
Grace Frame – Should’ve
been there ages ago.
Steve Burge – He’s fighting
for traffic lights? Shame he let so
many people down with their
houses.
Damian Elley – Sorry Gerry,
we don’t have money for that, we
are still trying to sort our houses
and roads after the mess you
left – thanks.
Carolyn Fifield – Anywhere
there are right-hand turns across
two lanes of traffic and into two
lanes of traffic needs lights. Given
the upgrade of the Northern expressway
which feeds traffic onto
Gardiners Rd, and especially
in morning peak-hour traffic
when the expressway is back up
1km or more and when children
are going to school. There is a
greater need at this intersection
than Gardiners/Sawyers Arms
intersection.
Nicholas Smeaton – I had
to go through that intersection
yesterday, I didn’t even try, I
turned left and then hung a right
into Leacroft St. Why Sawyers
Arms/Gardiners received lights
and Harewood/Breens, Gardiners
didn’t, is a mystery to me,
perhaps a councillor or high level
city council manager lived near
the Sawyers/Gardiners intersection?
Readers respond to an
article about the Papanui-
Community Board’s
meeting with Ministry of
Education representatives
this month to discuss the
new enrolment zone for
Shirley Boys’ and Avonside
Girls’ High Schools
Vicki Ware – Prestons is
closer to Mairehau than QE
II, they weren’t included in the
zone. The school runs their own
zoning every three years I believe
they could include at that stage,
the zone is not well thought out.
South Brighton is included which
is further away than the school
original zone and Prestons. MoE
have failed everyone doing a consulting
through a school holiday
period and wasn’t well publicised
to the area. We were given options
of Mairehau and Haeata.
Prestons have Mairehau not far at
all. This was a closure by stealth
and a new high school should
be built in Richmond. There are
lots of feeder schools here that
will suffer due to no definite high
school options.
Don Gould – Simply no
engagement from the MoE on
this issue with the community.
Where is the data from the MoE
that these calls are being made
on? What is the plan for schooling
for the southern area around
CHANGES
COMING:
Residents
want safety
improvements
at the
intersection
of Harewood,
Breens and
Gardiners Rds.
Richmond now? I really can’t
comment on this issue because I
just know nothing. The MoE has
put nothing in the public domain
that I’ve seen so the only noise in
the room is simply from objectors
who seem very emotive at best.
Readers respond to
mobile butcher Corey
Winder of Redwood parking
Elite Meats Bush Inn coming
out each week. Always happy to
discuss your needs and take an
order for pick-up the next week.
Keep up the fab work Corey and
team.
Rae Lentz – As a regular
at the Bush Inn shop, I cannot
recommend this butcher highly
enough. Gluten-free sausages
and smallgoods, pre-seasoned/
marinated meats . . . pretty much
everything is coeliac safe except
for the crumbed items. (And I
live in hope that Elite Meats Bush
Inn do a deal with Fogdog for the
crumbs they use).
Lynda Whitlow – Corey is a
fabulous butcher, we used to go
to his shop before the quakes on
Papanui/Main North Rd.
Aaron Campbell – This
was common on the coast, I still
remember Burrows Butchers’
green Bedford truck coming to
the house.
Ole ‘Milton’ Hansen – Awesome
butcher. Love what he produces
and sells at Bush Inn. We
travel right across the city to buy
his meat.
Jonathan Andrews – Like
the good old days when the fresh
fish truck would come around.
Kathleen Chase – Great
butcher, best meat ever.
Tania Watson – Great idea,
should come out Pegasus way.
Vanessa Davidson – Fantastic.
Adam Smith – Well done
Corey and Paula.
Helen Jolly – Great news for
Rolly.
Phoebe Thompson – It’s
awesome.
Edna Morrison – Had a mobile
butcher in the 60s in Hornby,
Islington. He was called Chop,
my dog jumped in the back of his
van once and took off with some
sausages, oh such memories back
in the day.
Readers respond to an
article about Fendalton-
Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board deputy
chairman Aaron Campbell
wanting to extend alcohol
restrictions to include some
parks and reserves.
Nic Davies – No, why ruin it
for those who are responsible and
respectful. Often on a nice day I
enjoy a quiet beer when reading
my book in a park.
Saar Vl – Unfortunately the
behaviour of a few people means
those who want to enjoy a drink
on a family picnic or barbecue
with friends can’t.
Matt Cuthill – Drinking in
public should be banned, there
are plenty of pubs.
IMPORTANT: In this week’s Soapbox, a community board member discusses
transparency around the interactive touch wall for Tūranga, Christchurch’s new
central library.
Transparency in spending
is vitally important
Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community
Board member Shirish
Paranjape talks about
transparency in
governance
TRANSPARENCY is
one of the prime tenets in
governance, including local
governance.
Transparency is a very
broad subject and can
include transparency in
decision-making as well as
transparency in spending.
Transparency in spending
is critically important,
particularly when it is
someone else’s money.
As a country, New
Zealand can be justifiably
proud of its reputation
globally. If we look at the
indices published annually
by Transparency International,
New Zealand has
consistently been among
the top three. In 2017, New
Zealand had the No 1 position.
However, if we go by the
happenings around us, the
city of Christchurch will
perhaps not be a contender
for any such high ranking
for transparency. Sadly,
more than once, the city
council has come under
fire for not being transparent.
It is always a sorry state
of affairs when taxpayers
or ratepayers have to knock
the doors of the Ombudsman
against a city council.
Even worse when the directives/recommendations
issued by the Ombudsman
are ignored by the city
council, and the Ombudsman
has to knock on the
doors of the Attorney-
General to step in.
Without going through
who is right, who is wrong
– those in public offices, including
the employed staff
and elected members of
city council – must recognise
that if they are hiding
something – intentionally
or otherwise – things will
catch up sooner or later.
Also, full/more transparency
ought to be exercised
particularly when the price
of the item is high, or the
“value” is subjective. For
example, a million dollar
spend on a piece of art will
always incur more public
scrutiny than the same
amount spent on a roading
or pumping project.
The worst thing those
in office can do is either to
hide behind “commercial
sensitivity” or delay, block
or ignore requests.
Chances are, if one is
hiding something, something
is not right.
One can only hope
that the digital wall was
an isolated incident with
city council, and that the
authorities will not act as a
wall in future, figuratively
speaking.
a proposal to move
a bus stop 150m on
Innes Rd, meaning
up to eight nearby
their parking
Jo Kirwan – Definitely
a safety issue having the
bus stop so close to the
school and way too close to
the pedestrian crossing too.
As a parent of a child at
Mairehau Primary, I hope
people rethink this move.
Jan Driscoll – Typical
idiocy from the planners
. . . they don’t have a
clue, hope to heavens the
business owners get it
stopped.
Trevor Taylor –
Council doesn’t care. It will
say, the shoppers should be
riding a bike or taking the
bus, not driving evil cars.
Aaron Campbell – At
the top end of Innes Rd they
is closer to a walk through,
just goes to show how lazy
and stupid this council really
is. The new proposed bus
mow lawns for and she is
outraged, and rightly so,
come on council sharpen up.
I don’t know the cost to shift
have thought it would be a
cheap exercise, just another
Don Gould – Catch
the playback of yesterday’s
board isn’t keeping up
with events happening in
their area. These bus issues
aren’t even hitting their
radar. Lianne Dalziel had
more than a few interesting
comments to make.

StAC footballer off to Sydney FC
RISING STAR: St Andrew’s College footballer Riley Caswell is
off to train with Sydney FC.
ST ANDREW’S College
footballer Riley Caswell is one of
two Christchurch United stars
set to get an invaluable taste of
professional football at Sydney
FC, the glamour club in the
A-League.
Caswell and St Thomas’ Hamish
Cooper, who both turned 17
last month but already play for
the Christchurch United first
team, have been invited to train
with the Sydney club. Sydney FC
were last season’s A-League minor
premiers and losing finalists
and won the A-League in 2017.
The opportunity arose through
the contacts of Christchurch
United head coach Fernando
Lambert who coached at Manly
United in Sydney for five years.
Lambert also spent four months
as an apprentice coach at Sydney
FC with Robert Stanton, who
runs the club’s first team and
young league side.
Lambert says that both players
have a big potential and the
Yaldhurst-based Christchurch
United wants to give its players
the best opportunities to
develop.
“This may not be ideal for
our club as they will miss a few
games, but our club is focused
on developing great players for
the future and for New Zealand
football, and not just looking at
short-term results,” said Lambert.
“This trip to Sydney will show
our youngsters the next level
they need to be aiming for and
what is required in a professional
environment.”
Caswell headed over on
Sunday to train with the Sydney
first team, which is the feeder
team for the A-League squad and
regularly trains with the club’s
superstars.
The central defender feels he
has earned this opportunity with
his performances in Christchurch
United’s first team.
“I’m definitely excited and
slightly nervous, but I’m grateful
to have the opportunity to
travel across to Australia,” said
Caswell.
SPORTS
“It is a great opportunity to experience
what football is like in
other countries and to compete
against top players”
Cooper will go over the following
week to spend a fortnight
with the Sydney FC academy
squad. The right fullback is
grateful to Christchurch United
and coach Fernando Lambert for
giving him first-team experience
at 16 and to open the doors to
overseas opportunities.
“The move to Christchurch
United had definitely paid off
because I am not sure if I would
have had those opportunities at
my previous club,” says Hamish
who is pursuing a career in football,
as player or coach.
“At Sydney FC, I want to compare
myself to the other players
my age in Australia to see where
I need to improve,” said Cooper.
Late goal seals game for St Andrew’s College
• By Jacob Page
THE ST Andrew’s College first
XI boys hockey team used a
transplanted Timaruvian to take
the Connetic Challenge Shield
from Timaru Boys’ High School,
on Wednesday.
Former Timaru primary
and intermediate hockey star,
Harrison Darling scored the
lone goal of the game with two
minutes to play.
The win also helped St
Andrew’s earn a semi-final spot
in the Canterbury secondary
school competition.
The shield was introduced
at the start of the season and
initially given to Christ’s College
as champions before TBHS won
it off them.
St Andrew’s coach Ben Owers
said it was a thrilling game
against a quality team.
“It looks like both teams will
make the semi-finals and (TBHS)
had a goal disallowed so it was a
very good game,” he said.
Owers said having a maximum
of three more games in the
competition would be beneficial.
We even pulled off our goalie
in search for the goal which is
always good to try for when we
might need it at Rankin.”
The Rankin Cup is the top
tier national secondary school
tournament and is the pinnacle
of the secondary school season.
“It’s a tough tournament, not
just with the quality of teams but
the need to play seven games in
six days.”
St Andrew’s will play St Bede’s
on Friday in the final match of
the season where the shield is on
the line.
The Rankin Shield tournament
will be held at Blake Park in Mt
Maunganui from September
3 to September 8 with Owers
believing his team had the
chance to go deep into the
play-offs if their fitness was
maintained.
WINNERS: St Andrew’s College first XI hockey team won the Connetic Challenge Shield 1-0
from Timaru Boys’ High School on Wednesday. The Shield is the equivalent of rugby’s Ranfurly
Shield.
Special medal for successful golfer
WINNER: Waimairi Beach golfer, Allison Doell will
be presented with the Coronation Medal after she
won the national links competition for 2018.
• By Jacob Page
HAREWOOD resident
Allison Doell was
surprised as anyone when
she won the Coronation
Medal.
The medal was presented
to the New Zealand
Ladies Golf Union by
the Ladies Golf Union in
1907 to commemorate
the Coronation of King
Edward VII.
The medal, first played
for in 1908, is a silver division
award in the national
home links competition.
It is played for by women
Phen Day Dhargyey Ling (Tibetan)
- ‘A Centre for the Source of Benefit and
Happiness’ is the meaning of the name given
by the esteemed lama Lhagon Rinpoche.
The Christchurch people have the wonderful opportunity to engage in Tibetan Buddhist
philosophy and tradition with the local resident spiritual ‘friend’, as he likes to be referred
as, Venerable Geshe Nyima Dorje (Geshe-la).
The Christchurch Centre was started due
to requests made to have a highly qualified
authentic Tibetan Buddhist teacher
residing in the city and carrying out weekly
teachings, meditation classes and retreats.
Fulfilling this request Geshe-la now teaches
every Tuesday night and Sunday morning.
• Geshe-la graduated from the largest
Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the
world, Sera Monastic University
in South India. His main teachers
included His Holiness the Dalai Lama,
the late Venerable Khensur Urgyen
Tseten, Venerable Khensur Kangurwa
Lobsang Thupten and Venerable
Khenpo Lobsang Palden.
• Geshe-la arrived in New Zealand in
2008 teaching originally in Dunedin
then through requests moved to
Christchurch 2011, ever since proving
to be lively and entertaining, fresh
and eloquent. Certainly he is very
experienced, having taught younger
monks in the monastery, in his home
region of Tibet and for 3 years in
the traditionally Tibetan-Buddhist
country of Mongolia. Having Geshela
to teach in Christchurch therefore,
is quite a wonderful opportunity for
people to make a deep connection
with age-old teachings.
• At the Centre Geshe-la’s classes focus
on understanding the mind, mind
Meditation & Mind Training;
• How to generate love, compassion,
generosity and patience. The purpose
is to create a peaceful mind. When
our mind is disturbed it lacks love,
compassion and patience. If we know
how to generate these qualities we
can create a more peaceful mind. We
have accustomed our minds more to
disturbances. We know that as we can
see how easy it is to become angry and
how much effort is needed to remain
patient. Familiarisation is the key.
Also if we apply our understanding
to our own situation; we need to
be loved and if we need this then it
is fair to say others also want to be
loved. If we generate this to others
then we gain the benefits, as we then
receive love and compassion. ‘Others’
mean all beings, if we have this
mental expansion there are enormous
benefits.
• As long as we have strong compassion
we have more patience, from this we
don’t get angry as quickly or as easily
then we have peace of mind.
• The Mind Training constitutes these
kinds of practices, learning and
practicing how to become acquainted
with these qualities of mind, so that
arises spontaneously, or at least are
generated more easily.
A FAMILY visit to
England has earned former
Christchurch Boys’ High
School squash player, Joe
Williams a national callup.
The 22-year-old will
represent New Zealand for
the first time at the World
University Squash Championships
in Birmingham,
England, in September.
Williams will be one of
four Kiwi players at the
event and the only one
from the South Island.
He took up squash when
he started boarding at
Christchurch Boys’ High
School and now plays for
the Lincoln University club
where he has just completed
studying.
It was a far cry from the
sheep and beef farm he
grew up on a sheep and
beef farm in Little Akaloa
and is hoping to one day
run it himself.
“At home the nearest
squash court was over an
hour away,” he said.
“CBHS was also very
good at squash during the
time I was there with Paul
Coll (current world No 10),
the head boy at Adam’s
House where I boarded
when I first started.”
Both his parents played
squash socially and that
motivated him to give it
a go.
“I wasn’t much of a fan of
football or rugby,” he said.
“I quickly fell in love
with the sport and after a
few low level junior tournaments
and I started to
take it more seriously when
Paul McFadzien offered to
coach me.
“My first memory of
SPORTS
with a handicap between
0-18.
The competition is a
compilation of national
club results where women’s
golfers play on their
home turf, and their score
is adjusted to account for
their playing handicap
before being compared to
other players, both in the
district and nationally.
Doell’s Waimairi Beach
Golf Club played its
Coronation Medal round
in April and she shot 81,
which was adjusted to a 63
nett.
Now that all other
participating clubs have
played their round, Doell
was crowned the winner,
something she was elated
about.
“To be honest I’d forgotten
about it and when
I saw the email come
through I thought it was
an award the whole club
had won and it wasn’t until
I received another email
I read that it was for me,”
she said.
“It’s an amazing feeling,
like winning lotto.”
Doell, who plays off an
eight handicap when on
form, will be presented
with the medal later this
year at the end of the
season.
Doell, who lives in Harewood
has been playing at
the Waimairi Beach club
for more than 35 years after
she moved to Christchurch
from Cheviot to work
in the city.
She said while she only
gets to play once a week,
she said it was a privilege
to play a good or bad
round.
“I don’t practice often,”
she said. “When I have
squash would have to be
playing against my family
at Squashways, particularly
playing my Dad who beat
me easily,” he said.
“I have never beaten
him as he gave up before I
could.”
A trip England to visit
relatives offered him the
chance to pull on the silver
fern.
“In finishing my B.Ag, I
decided that I would like
to go overseas to England
to visit my mother’s half of
the family and experience
the high level of squash
played in England.
“New Zealand Squash
time to play that’s what I
love to do.
“When I shot that round
of 81, I couldn’t wait to get
back out on the course and
play again,” she said.
“Even when it’s not going
well, I’m still grateful
for the chance to have
some exercise and walk in
the sun and I often think
of all the ladies I used to
play with who can’t play
golf any more and I think
I’m lucky.”
Doell said while there
were many closer golf
courses to her home, she
would always remain loyal
to Waimairi Beach.
“The club has been good
to me and even through
the earthquakes we still
have a very nice course out
there with great people,”
she said.
“It’s a very technical
course and one that requires
a lot of thought and
skill and that’s what I like.”
Chance call-up for squash player
NZ REP: Former CBHS squash player Joe Williams
will represent New Zealand at the World University
Squash Championships in Birmingham, England in
September.
advertised about these
championships being on
in Birmingham and I was
more than keen to play as
I may never get a chance
to play in a world event
again.”
Williams had no expectation
on how he will go in
the event.
“Since I do not know the
standard of people playing
in the event I can not say,
although being able to play
squash in Yorkshire has
already started to improve
my game and fitness, so
I’m hoping I can surprise
myself by doing quite well,”
he said.

Chairwoman of the Bishopdale Business
Association Amanda Nuttall talks about
upcoming changes to the area...
We recently had the BBA annual meeting.
The main news from that is we have
decided to call ourselves Bishopdale Village
and we have a new logo.
There has been a lot of discussion about
what we are and what we are not – with the
carparks and outdoor area being owned by
city council, numerous landlords leasing to
individual businesses and being a mix of
retail and services, we are quite unique.
Our strapline – The heart of your
community – this emphasises that we
are central to the wider community of
Bishopdale and the surrounding area.
After the AGM we had a presentation
Bishopdale Village Mall
from Development Christchurch Ltd.
This is a company owned by the city
council with the mandate to help plan and
implement the redevelopment of specific
areas.
The committee met with them in
October 2017 and since then they have
conducted a shopper survey and talked to
individual landlords and businesses to get
an understanding of the issues.
We hope that this will lead to improved
lighting and security in the village. It would
be great to involve some of our local schools
and community groups in the project too.
The next couple of years will be a very
exciting time for Bishopdale as new
businesses join us in the currently vacant
buildings and our area is rejuvenated.
Ma Baker - your local
Kiwi bakery
They say that if you want to know the
best place to find a great bakery, follow the
locals, and in Edgeware and Bishopdale,
you’ll find both the residents and those
working in the area are regularly heading
straight for Ma Baker.
Their yummy food options in-store can
be described as honest Kiwi tucker and
there’s something for everyone. Everything
is baked daily by their team of bakers, from
the fresh bread displayed in store which
is also used in their sandwiches and rolls,
to their delicious and so-moreish cream
cakes, scones and slices. It’s a perfect spot
to call in for lunch or afternoon tea with
friends, to share a cuppa and a cake with
someone special, or for tradies to fill up
on their large selection of pies, stuffed
sausages, toasties, buns and donuts, and
they can be comfortable knowing they are a
tradie/hi-vis/workboots-friendly bakery. It
is also a popular spot for business people to
hold casual weekly meetings.
When cooking a meal is too much after
a busy day, parents can select something
from their large deli-bars and take home
large-sized bacon and egg or family meat
pies or pizza breads with fruit pies to follow
– their budget-friendly prices mean that
take-out or eating out doesn’t need to be
a weekly treat any more. Their savoury
SCHOOL OPTIONS - early & middle years 2019
Small co-ed classes at St Michael’s
Is your child one of 15 or 50? Is their
classroom calm and productive
or a disharmony of noise and
movement? How much of their
teacher’s attention does your child
actually receive?
At St Michael’s, our small co-ed classes
and specialist teachers ensure your child is
an individual, well known by staff and fellow
pupils alike. For at the heart of St Michael’s
are the essential values of Christian faith
and good citizenship: respect, integrity,
faith, hope and love.
St Michael’s is a prep school so your
child is assured of a traditional foundation
in English and Mathematics. This
academic rigour then underpins our wider
curriculums in Science, History, Geography
and Spanish. IT literacy is taught, not
assumed, and computer use is measured.
We like teaching and talking to our pupils!
Cultural and sports’ programmes
develop your child’s foundation further,
as creativity and problem-solving come
in many forms. Specialist art and music
classes are enjoyed weekly; and most pupils
play at least one instrument, whether piano
or flute, bassoon or bongos. There are two
choirs, and drama lessons.
And our extended campus is spectacular:
today, the Art Gallery; tomorrow, the
Gardens; next week…
St Michael’s has been nurturing and
educating children for 167 years, and our
pupils come from city-wide, arriving via
the bus exchange only a block away or
with parents who work in the thriving city
centre.
You and your child are warmly welcome
to discover for yourselves our purposeful,
wholehearted and inclusive prep school.
Our Open Day is Wednesday 15 August or
Cathedral Grammar
The Cathedral Grammar School is an
independent school providing high-quality
education for pre-school, primary school
and intermediate aged girls and boys.
This is a place of ambition alongside
preparation where students learn from the
best right from the start. Every year level
benefits from the expertise of our highcalibre
specialist teachers across multiple
subjects. And small class sizes means a
lot of individual attention so every child’s
strengths are identified and built on and
support provided where and when needed.
Our school structure is unique and
designed to ensure students have the
opportunity to make the most of their
formative school years. We understand
learning happens in different ways at
different ages; our students work in both
co-educational and single-sex learning
environments at times when this best suits
their learning styles. In Pre-School and
the Junior School children learn in a coeducational
environment. Students in Years
4 to 8 attend either our Boys’ or Girls’ School.
Allowing students the best of both worlds,
single sex classes offer the opportunity to
target and deliver the curriculum in the
most effective and interesting style possible,
while social skills are developed by sharing
mixed-environment break times, specialist
classes and activities.
Creativity and culture play a
big role here with four choirs and
hundreds of individual music,
speech and drama lessons every
week. We’re also a proud sporting
school, providing students with
the facilities and encouragement
to try their hand at a range of
sports and recreation activities.
Ultimately, we are committed
to providing a balance of
tradition and rigour, while being
curious and adventurous every
day.
SCHOOL OPTIONS - early & middle years 2019
Middle schooling
makes a difference
Having a curriculum and learning
environment designed specifically for
learners in the “middle years” (Years 7-10) is
essential to ensure high levels of motivation
and engagement in learning during this
crucial stage of schooling.
At Hillmorton High School having a
consistent approach without a transition
to a new school between Year 8 and 9 is
proving to be positive in terms of
accelerating student learning within
the Middle School.
We are currently working with
our architects designing a new
Middle School building with 22
“General Learning Areas”. These
areas are flexible and can operate as
single cell classrooms or be opened
up to allow more open learning
spaces – the best of both worlds.
This building will not disrupt
learning as it is being built on the
current tennis courts.
This environment fits well
with our broad Middle School
curriculum allowing learners to
explore and find both their strengths
and passions.
The advantage of combining
the skills of Year 7 and 8 specialist
teachers with the subject specialists
of a high school gives our Middle
School learners a huge advantage.
Additionally, our “Big Day Out”
events and end of year student
electives allow our young people to learn in
a range of environments often participating
in social action such as planting, working
with the elderly, along with exploring the
city, the Art Gallery and the university.
Our Middle School is ensuring real
educational success and positive future
prospects as students move into the Senior
School for Years 11-13.
Providing
our students
with learning
and personal
growth
opportunities
At St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School,
our mission is that we are “choosing
to be an innovative, catholic learning
community that inspires and empowers
learners to succeed.”
We are committed to inspiring and
empowering students for success,
through the implementation of innovative
instructional practices, leveraging digital
technology, ensuring equity of access for
all.
We offer a range of sporting and cultural,
innovative and creative opportunities.
Teaching and learning experiences are
personalised for our students and value
student voice.
Within our new flexible learning spaces
every child has the opportunity to learn
through authentic contexts, solving real
world problems.
Together we continue to innovate within
a Catholic learning environment where all
learners are inspired to learn, create and
share. We are creating learners who will
not only be successful but will become
people who will positively impact on their
world.
Selwyn House School -
small class sizes and talented
teaching staff
For primary school, every parent wants
to ensure their child is receiving the best
foundation for their academic future.
Selwyn House School has small class sizes
and a talented teaching staff set within a
nurturing environment and an extensive
range of opportunities.
Selwyn House offers the International
Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years
Programme (PYP) and is proud to be a
leading STEAM focused school. We not only
encourage our girls to work in advanced
STEAM fields, we want our girls to lead
them. Our STEAM Hub provides every
student from Year 1 to 8 access to stateof-the-art
equipment. In Mechatronics,
girls learn the foundations of mechanical
and electrical knowledge. Robotics is
introduced as an interdisciplinary, projectbased
learning activity drawing mostly
on mathematics, science and technology.
Learning is also enhanced by additional
opportunities including the 2018 Space
Camp trip where 18 girls will travel to the
United States to attend a week-long Space
Camp.
A supportive all-girl learning
environment encourages girls to take
risks without fear of failure. As the girls
progress they are confident in their
abilities, understanding that perseverance
helps them grow. A school-wide buddy
programme provides each girl with support
and mentoring.
Learning is personalised and each
teacher has the time to foster authentic
and meaningful relationships. Strong
relationships between the class teacher and
family ensure each girl’s learning journey
is nurtured by a partnership of support.
Teachers construct learning activities
to help each girl identify their personal
strengths.
Selwyn House believes these strengths
can be applied to academic tasks
and become more powerful with the
acquisition of skills and knowledge, aiding
intellectual development and academic
achievement. For this reason core learning
in reading, writing and mathematics is
a priority. Specialist teachers in Spanish,
Mechatronics, Art, Science, Physical
Education, Swimming, Performing Arts
and Music work with classroom teachers to
help identify the strengths of every girl.
The environment at Selwyn House
empowers each girl to embrace their future
and develop a love of learning. A Selwyn
House girl will learn to define herself,
accept responsibility, form opinions,
and have compassion for the world. This
combination of achievement, confidence,
and character makes a Selwyn House
education a powerful and transformative
experience.
were a cracker
Papanui Heritage Group chairman Murray Williams looks at the life
of businessman and Hawthorne St resident Leonard Hart
LEONARD Brannan Hart
was born in Christchurch
in 1874 to Ellen and
Michael Hart. Mr Hart
spent his formative years
in the city and his early
business career was also
based there.
He specialised as an
importer and wholesaler
of Huntley and Palmers
biscuits from
England,
and it is
interesting to
see the way in
which he used
contemporary
events as an
advertising
gimmick,
especially in
exploiting
the imperial
sentiments of
the day.
For
example,
in November 1911, Mr
Hart was advertising
Huntley and Palmers
‘famous polar biscuits’
to coincide with Robert
Falcon Scott’s preparations
for his Antarctic
expedition. Later, Mr Hart
became manager of the
Christchurch branch of
Abels Ltd, a margarine
manufacturing business.
By 1919, he and his
family were living in
Hawthorne St, Papanui,
and he threw himself
into local politics.
His most significant
achievement was to lead
the campaign to lobby
for the construction of a
war memorial in Papanui.
Rather than settling for
an obelisk or statue, Mr
Hart lobbied for a ‘utility
object’, specifically a new
town hall.
As chairman of the
memorial
committee,
he argued
successfully
that the
bulk of
the money
should be
provided
by raising
a council
loan,
although
the
committee
also raised
funds
directly by organising a
very successful Queen
Carnival. The new
memorial hall with library
facilities on the corner of
Horner St and Papanui Rd
was finally opened in 1923.
However, Mr Hart’s
other foray into local
politics was less successful.
Since 1910, Papanui had
been administered by
the Waimairi County
Council but there was
some feeling that the area
would do better as a part
of Christchurch city.
Mr Hart disagreed –
he was convinced that
this would result in a
disproportionate increase
in rates for Papanui
property owners.
The fact that he had a
financial interest in a large
tract of then undeveloped
land off Hawthorne St
may have been at least
a partial motivation for
his campaign, which was
fought at public meetings
and through lengthy
letters to The Press.
However, in 1922,
ratepayers in the most
urbanised section of
Papanui voted to secede
from Waimairi in favour
of absorption into the
growing city. Thus in 1923
– the year that marked
his triumph in driving
the successful campaign
for the memorial hall –
the change in the local
territorial boundary
was officially gazetted.
Both the memorial hall
and Mr Hart’s property
in Hawthorne St had
officially become part of
Christchurch. Later Mr
Hart moved to the Bay
of Plenty and died in
Tauranga in 1960.
Grape seeds
shown to have
remarkable
health benefits!
According to researchers grape seeds
may hold the potential to treat and prevent
many devastating disorders. The seeds
have been found to contain many powerful
antioxidant that have been shown to
support the natural healing process and
even slow the aging process.
Grape Seed Extract (GSE) has been shown
to reduce inflammation, pain, increase
cell energy, protect protein structures and
increase collagen production. The powerful
antioxidants can tone and strengthen
the blood vessels, improve blood flow,
making it valuable for circulatory disorders
of all kinds, including varicose veins,
haemorrhoids, hardening of the arteries
and impaired blood flow to the brain. It
is excellent for most skin conditions with
many noticing the skin becomes smoother.
GSE offers a natural alternative for many
people with hypertension. (High Blood
Pressure) Higher B/P puts more stress
on organs and can lead to atherosclerosis
(hardening of the arteries) and increased
risk of heart disease and strokes.
Recent studies on people with elevated
B/P found GSE to significantly lower B/P
but with no effect on people with normal
B/P. Animal studies have shown GSE to
improve heart function, reduce damage
caused by heart attacks and prevent arterial
plaque.
A growing number of studies show that
GSE has powerful anticancer properties,
can help balance blood sugar, improve
arthritis and protect brain cells. It may prove
vital in the treatment of brain disorders like
Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
Numerous studies on GSE show it can
help support our good health and prevent
many degenerative diseases. Further
deficient in B12
Emerging research has shown as many as 50% of older adults and
as many as 25% of younger adults are deficient in vitamin B12.
Scientists at Rush University Medical
Center found those most deficient
in vitamin B12 to have the smallest
brain mass and the lowest scores on
tests measuring short-term memory,
concentration and brain performance.
Another study showed that older people
with higher levels of B12 in their blood
have bigger, healthier brains and score
higher on cognitive tests than those with
lower levels. Yet another recent landmark
study showed that B12 supplementation
slows the accelerated rate of brain
shrinkage and declining cognitive function.
B12 is essential for energy production, cell
health, regulation of mood and sleep cycles,
nerve health and repair, and prevention
of homocysteine a serious cardiovascular
risk factor that is known to cause damage
and plaque in the blood vessels. It can also
increase the chances of a stroke. Harvard
researchers found
a 34% decrease
risk of vision
loss in a study
of participants
aged 40+ who
supplemented with
B12. Another study
linked a higher risk of hearing loss in
Up to 1 in 2 people may have a shrinking brain due to a lack of vitamin B12.
Supplementation of methylcobalamin B12 has been shown to reduce the rate of brain
shrinkage & support memory & brain function. B12 is also known to protect against
homocysteine a serious cardiovascular risk factor that can also damage the hearing,
eyesight & affect the mood. B12 is essential for energy, cell health & nerve function.
subjects in their 60’s who were low in B12.
The reason so many people lack B12
appears to be our body’s ability to absorb
it declining with age as the digestive
system becomes less efficient. Anti-reflux
medication and other drugs further reduce
B12 absorption. The good news is B12 in
the form of Methylcobalamin sublingual
tablets that are dissolved in the mouth and
been shown to effectively raise B12 levels in
HOME & HEATING
Choosing the
right heat pump
for your home
Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit,
most homes include at least one heat pump,
if not a whole heating solution. They can
provide cheap, clean heat and are much more
convenient than a log burner as you just need
to press a button. But how do you decide what
is best? Choosing the right sized heat pump is
key to ensuring optimum comfort levels. Every
situation varies and it is therefore important
to get professional advice from heat pump
experts.
The range varies from wall mounted high
walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems,
ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted
central heating systems allowing you to have a
very discreet way of heating your whole home
to a constant temperature throughout.
Firstly, you must select a heat pump that
is suitable for the size of the space you wish
to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to
ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area
taken into consideration but also, insulation,
building orientation, windows and ceiling
space. There are a wide range of heat pumps
available with different heating outputs so it
is important to select the correct size for your
requirements that will handle the job but not
be unnecessarily overpowered.
Secondly, the location of your heat pump
is also extremely important. The cheapest
installation is a back to back where the outdoor
unit is positioned directly behind the indoor
unit however this is not necessarily always
the best option. It is vital that the indoor
unit is positioned in a place that will not be
NOR’WEST NEWS
constantly blowing on you. Also important, is
the location of the outdoor unit. Most people
do not want their outdoor unit sitting directly
in their outdoor entertaining area or right
outside their bedroom window.
Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands
have come and gone over the years but there
are a number of manufacturers who provide
reputable and reliable products. All brands vary
in their energy efficiency, quietness of systems
and price, so it depends on your application as
to which will be most suitable. Major brands
such as Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin,
Toshiba and Hitachi are all reliable brands
backed up by good technical after sales service.
Ensure your heat pump is installed by an
accredited installer. This will not only ensure
correct installation of your heat pump, but also
validate the manufacturers warranty.
Other things to consider when choosing a
heat pump are time clocks, ease of use of the
remote controllers, air filtration and also wifi
capabilities.
Heating is a major investment in your home
and it is vital to get the right advice.
Enviro Master Ltd specialise in the supply,
installation and servicing of all major brands
of heat pumps. Our salesmen are engineers
HOME & HEATING
Get rid of
dampness
in your house
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm and
healthy for their families throughout winter.
Rising damp is an issue that affects many of
our older properties which suffer from poor, or
no, insulation. In Canterbury especially, postquake,
many people have relocated to homes
that suffer from rising damp which can be
associated with health problems. Independent
tests have shown that up to 40 litres of water can
rise from the ground and enter a house every
day, leading to mildew, mould, condensation
and musty smells. Moulds can produce
various allergic reactions and the
frail, elderly and very young are
especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete
Ltd is a locally owned and
operated firm. The team
understands the problems
caused by rising damp and are
there to help. They will come
to your damp home and pump
a lightweight, flowable foam
concrete under your timber
floored home. Specially adapted
for our New Zealand conditions and
applications it provides a layer of protection
against rising moisture. An unexpected
benefit that the team at Canterbury Foam
Concrete have noticed recently, is that many
owners of properties which had underfloor
foam concrete installed, reported that it also
provided protection against liquefaction after
the earthquakes.
Contact Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd
MBIE has confirmed that landlords who are not complying with the tenancy insulation upgrade
requirements by July 2019, will face $4000 fines, the proceeds of which will be passed on to the tenant.
all the heat you paid for.
Save
What does this mean if you have a tenant? It is very likely they will be checking, as what an incentive!
($4000.00). MBIE has said there are no excuses as landlords have had 3 years by July 2019 to get their
properties up to compliance. Christchurch City Council have been running a scheme called Build Back
Smarter that provides a full home assessment and Air Con Christchurch have been actively involved with
this program and are issuing compliance certificates to landlords (if they comply of course)
Acupuncture
without needles
A graduate of Beijing Medical College,
Dr Lan established an acupuncture clinic
in Christchurch in 1993. As she continued
her research and medical practice, she
discovered a reflexology network on the
human body, an exciting new discovery
that became the foundation of her new
treatment – acupuncture without needles.
Instead of needles, Dr Lan uses a blunt
instrument to stimulate the reflexology
points on the face or other parts of the
body. When the point is stimulated by
pressure, a message is sent to the repair
centre to promote healing. As Dr Lan
explains, the treatment increases energy,
which boosts the body’s healing system.
With her powerful treatment, results are
produced very quickly – even instantly.
It brings fast results because it is a very
precise treatment, Dr Lan says. She uses
it to treat people of all ages with many
different types of pain in all parts of the
body, including arthritic pain, MS,
and pain from injury, and there are
no side-effects. Depression and
anxiety, often the result of ongoing
low energy, can also be overcome
with Dr Lan’s treatment.
Search YouTube for Dr Lan
reflexology to see lots of instant
results videos. Dr Lan has published
a book, Dr Lan’s Reflexology
Network, which introduces the
treatment and explains how
it works. Her website, www.
drlansreflexologynetwork.co.nz,
includes treatment videos, where
people who have had the treatment
speak about the fast relief it has
r Lan’s Reflexology
brought them. Phone 323 4168 or
027 231 8388.
ADveRToRIAL
For those seeking relief from pain caused by injury,
and other physical and mental health issues, Chinese
health practitioner Dr Lan Xiao offers a method of
treatment that brings fast and often immediate results.
Search YouTube Dr Lan Reflexology
for Instant Results Videos
This unique powerful
treatment provides
you with pain relief
in seconds
Acupuncture
without needles
• Relieves all kinds of body pain
• Boosts your energy
• Improves sleep and mood
“Living Fully in Dying
and Death?”
Dying and especially death have become
increasingly taboo subjects in our modern
western society. This course will involve reflective
consideration of the recent important literature
of how to live life to the full when facing the last
of life’s major stages of dying and death. This is
at a time when more people are living longer and
are becoming more removed from the reality of
what it means to be mortal. Attention will also
be drawn to recent research on palliative care and
how it informs people to face approaching death
not with trepidation but openness, clarity and
understanding. This is an information sharing,
reflective course and is not therapeutic in format.
It will be a six-week course of 2 hour sessions; held
on Thursday afternoons, 2 – 4 pm, commencing
on 23rd August. The course will be facilitated by
Rodney Routledge and others and be interactive
in format.
THAT’S right folks! DND Showband returns
to the Hornby Club this Saturday with the
original line up.
“We’ve had a lot of fun putting this show
together, ”said Jo-Anne Davern, performer
and manager of the band. “It’s been a good
couple of years since this line up last
performed together and I’m amazed at how
simply we all slotted back in place. It’s like
we were never apart.”
Joining Jo on stage will be regular
members Ben Harvey (guitar, vocals); Grant
McPhie (bass, keys); and Mark Newburn
(drums, vocals), along with showband
chanteuses Michele Webb, Gina Gilbreath,
and Mel Lawson.
Christchurch based DnD Showband has
been delighting audiences across the
country with their multi-tribute theme
shows for an incredible ten years. In
rehearsal mode for Saturday’s show, the 7
piece troupe has been busy fine tuning show
content, sorting costumes and tightening up
moves.
“We’ve put together a great play list
guaranteed to get everyone up dancing.
We’re opening with a set of 50s/60s tunes,
followed by our Moulin Rouge theme set
that brims with disco dance anthems of the
70s/80s, and concluding with our tribute to
ABBA,” said Jo. “And for those who prefer to
listen and watch, our professional tech’s
Peter Standring and Peter ‘Pedro’ Buchan-Ng
will be out front running our audio and
light systems to ensure it sounds and looks
wonderful.”
