Safety improvements planned
at entrance to shopping centre
• By Ashleigh Monk
RESIDENTS describe the
Barrington shopping centre
entrance as an intersection were
you ‘take your life into your own
hands.’
But after a battle which has
lasted ‘some years’ the city
council is finally asking for
feedback on proposed changes to
make the area safer.
Spreydon Neighbourhood
Network chairwoman Sonya
Hodder said the group had
tried time and time again to
spur action to improve the
intersection.
“We are feeling really very
grateful that the money has been
set aside to do it,” she said.
The proposed changes
included installing a wider
footpath in front of the library,
stopping motorists turning
right out of the entrance onto
Barrington St, extending a
pedestrian refuge and creating
a patterned footpath across the
access to the shopping centre to
highlight a pedestrian route.
In June a video survey
concluded that about 115
pedestrians crossed the
entranceway at the peak time
between 4pm and 6pm.
Mrs Hodder lived on
Barrington St and often visited
the mall but said she avoided
using the main entrance at all
costs.
“I’ve seen so many near misses.
I’ve even seen a cyclist who
has been knocked off his
bike.”
But she said some concerns
raised by residents regarding
narrow footpaths were the mall’s
responsibility.
“The mall’s problem is that
they’ve got very little room
because they must provide
so many parks to meet their
resource consent requirements,”
“I won’t say who said, but
somebody mentioned that they
probably wouldn’t be allowed to
have the mall there if they were
applying now.”
City councillor for the
Spreydon Ward Phil Clearwater
said the biggest issue in moving
forward was getting all involved
parties to agree on solutions.
“I think the big thing is
the mall management people
being prepared to work with
city council and the residents.
I think it’s fair to say that they
weren’t early on. But the current
mall managers has been really
co-operative and collaborative in
working with different groups.”
But Barrington shopping
centre manager Jill Kearns said
she did not think she and her
staff had caused any delays in the
process.
“I don’t know why they would
say that. We’ve worked with the
She said the reason it had
taken several years to come up
council.
“It all has to go through a
DO I feel a sense of civil war looming
between the good folk of Cracroft and
Hoon Hay?
Hopefully not.
Cracroft people have been successful in
getting the name Hoon Hay off their rates
invoices - (see page 3).
It may be a bone of contention for those living further west
from Cracroft, in the suburb of Hoon Hay.
A staff member here at Star Media who lives in Hoon Hay
is fairly adamant Cracroft isn’t a suburb in its own right, and
therefore is part of Hoon Hay. You could feel him bristling.
But he’s not the type to take up arms, or incite a call to bring
Cracroft back into the fold.
But he can’t speak for others.
Cracroft residents win name battle
• By Ashleigh Monk
CRACROFT residents
have won their battle not to be
referred to as Hoon Hay on their
rates bills.
From this week, the bills will
have Cracroft in the address
section.
In May, the Spreydon-Cashmere
community board heard
concerns from the Cracroft Residents’
Association as their rates
and valuations bills listed them
as being a part of Hoon Hay, or
Hoon Hay Valley.
City councillor for the Spreydon
Ward Phil Clearwater said
Cracroft was a registered suburb
and should be referred to as such.
“It’s on the map as a suburb,
so I think it’s fair to say the mail
TIES CUT:
Cracroft
residents will no
longer receive
rates bills with
a Hoon Hay
address.
addressed to them should be
addressed correctly . . . they were
upset.”
He said he had previously
SYNONYMOUS:
Cracroft House,
also known as
the Old Stone
House, is a
central part of
the Cracroft
area.
dealt with a similar situation in
Somerfield.
“It’s a bit tricky because there
was this whole thing about
where does Beckenham end
and Somerfield begin, and then
Spreydon? We had to be careful
about how we dealt with it.”
He said the city council actually
had a policy to define suburbs
so that residents’ associations
would not clash.
“The advantage of that was it
meant that one residents’ group
area was quite clear about which
residents they should work with,”
he said.
“At times, of course, there was
a bit of intruding on other associations’
patches, and that
was why the policy was drawn
up.”
City council transactions manager
Paul Curgenven said the
confusion around Cracroft were
due to unclear borders.
“While Cracroft is the only
suburb in Christchurch that has
been geographically defined by
the NZ Geographic Board, there
was not an exact boundary for
the suburb.”
He said a correction of the
rates and valuation bills would
be implemented this week.
The Cracroft Residents’ Association
did not return calls to the
Save the park petition delivered to Parliament
• By Sarla Donovan
A PETITION asking that
Redcliffs School return to its
former Main Rd site has been
delivered to Parliament.
Christchurch Central Labour
MP Duncan Webb presented the
200-signature petition on behalf
of Friends of Redcliffs Park.
The petition has been referred
to the Education and Workforce
Select Committee to consider
when it meets later this month.
It calls for urgent legislation
enabling the school to reopen on
the former Main Rd site and to
spare it from being demolished.
Friends of Redcliffs Park
spokesman Chris Doudney
said he was hopeful the select
committee would consider the
H. C. Cairns – I write in
support of returning Redcliffs
School to its original site
on Main Rd. Redcliffs Park
is totally unsuitable for the
school to be built for the
many reasons already given
in previous correspondence
from other people – prone
to flooding, smaller than the
original site, threat of tsunamis,
objections from householders
CONTROVERSIAL: Redcliffs Park where Redcliffs School will
be relocated.
petition “before they demolish
the school.”
Demolition work is expected
to commence later in the month.
adjacent to the park, traffic
problems etc. It would be much
simpler and cheaper to move
the existing buildings on the
main site forward and have
playing fields at the rear near the
cliff which has been stabilised
and has a bund there for safety
purposes.
Jenny and Bernie Godden
– It is nearly 20 years since
my wife and I drove through
Mr Doudney said the committee
was able to bring findings to
Parliament to be debated and
potentially acted upon.
Redcliffs en route to
Sumner during our first
trip to New Zealand
from the United
Kingdom. Do you
know what still sticks
in our minds? Yes,
the Redcliffs School
buildings. They ranked among
the finest of Christchurch
buildings, even before the
earthquake. Over the years, we
Port Hills Labour MP Ruth
Dyson was not asked to take the
petition because she had indicated
since 2016 that the school’s
shift to Redcliffs Park was a
“done deal”, said Mr Doudney.
He also said Port Hills National
list MP Nuk Korako was not
asked because he had been a
“strong proponent of the new
school,” and Port Hills Greens
list MP Eugenie Sage wasn’t well
known to Friends of Redcliffs
Park.
Meanwhile, clearance activity
at Redcliffs Park has been halted
as archaeological work takes
place.
Ministry of Education head of
education infrastructure service
Kim Shannon said clearance had
stopped while a specialist team is
have been impressed
by this country’s regard
for its heritage. So you
can imagine our shock
when, as recent residents
of Sumner, we look on
at the destruction of
this beautiful asset. We
ask ourselves “why?” We have
not met a single resident who
supports this bizarre scheme.
The area is of particular archaeological
interest because it
was the site of some of the earliest
known Māori occupation of
the South Island.
Areas of interest are being
excavated by hand, Ms Shannon
said. “This will ensure any
historic material is recovered,
catalogued and recorded and
that the construction of the new
Information regarding the
inhabitation of the area and any
artefacts recovered will be published
once it is complete.
Ms Shannon said the research
had been planned from the outset
of the project.
Readers respond to the ongoing saga over Redcliffs School
decision? The motive? It must
be financial. Surely that is the
only possible answer? So who
stands to gain? Mmm. We plead
that those who have made this
decision search deep into their
souls and ask: “Is this the right
way, or will I forever have this
act of destruction on my mind?”
Heritage lost forever, lost to the
Steven Adams: My Life, My Fight
by Steven Adams
For the first time, Steven Adams shares the story behind his meteoric rise from
the streets of Rotorua to his emerging stardom in the NBA.
Adams overcame the odds to become a top prospect in the 2013 NBA draft.
From there he went on to secure a four-year contract with the Oklahoma City
Thunder - making him New Zealand’s highest-paid sportsperson ever - and forge
a reputation for his intense, physical style of basketball.
In this intimate account of his life story so far, the seven-foot centre reflects on
his humble upbringing, the impact of his father’s death when he was just 13, the
multiple challenges and setbacks he has faced, early career-defining moments,
and what basketball means to him.
Told with warmth, humour and humility, My Life, My Fight is a gripping account
from one of New Zealand’s most admired sporting stars.
By randolph Covich
Kiwi truckies are the unsung heroes of New Zealand - the men and women who
passion.
Life on the Road gathers together their fascinating stories.
It captures the humour, tragedy, action and extremes of the trucking world,
moving between the dramatic, light-hearted and surprising - including runaway
trucks, skirmishes with the law, nostalgic tales of the early pioneers, love stories,
and more than one practical joke.
Whether you’re a trucking die-hard or just love the wide open road and a
cracking good yarn, Life on the Road is a gripping insight into the real lives of
Kiwi truckies.
A stunning collection of poems from one of New Zealand’s most
respected writers.
David Eggleton wrote of Marshall’s poetry in the New Zealand Listener that,
‘Above all, the poems are redolent of the South Island – all wild winds and
dry hills, sleepy summer afternoons, the shimmer of light on lakes, snow like
whitewash on the Alps.’ In addition his poetry captures the voice and perspective
of the South Island, whether it is contemplating family or friends, love or
mortality, the local landscape or further afield, through place or time.
This collection brings together Marshall’s most powerful poetry from his previous
three collections with many more recent works. They are complemented by
photographs taken by his friend and fellow Mainlander Grahame Sydney.
‘They are an exquisite marriage of musicality, observation, elegance and
economy. Certain words stand out in his lines like the glint of light on wet
ground.’
How Craig Heatley Became a Top New Zealand Entrepreneur.
Craig Heatley was still at high school when he created a subdivision on the back
of $200 saved from his paper round. A few years later, building a mini-golf
course launched a business that in 1986 saw him become the youngest person
to have then featured in the National Business Review’s Rich List.
But it is Sky Television that was his boldest and most precarious undertaking.
The fledgling company teetered in the early nineties as rugby suffered its own
crisis, torn between its amateur heritage and the forces of professionalism.
Heatley could see the answer. Making it happen is part of his story.
‘Craig built businesses that New Zealanders wanted before we knew we wanted
them.’
Green light for waterfront build
Long-awaited
decision may
help others
• By Sarla Donovan
AN OUTCOME to whether
people can build in parts of
Redcliffs could have a flow-on
effect for others in the same
situation.
Section owner Wendy
Gilchrist said she was “greatly
relieved” that an independent
hearing panel granted her
resource consent to build on a
waterfront site in Main Rd after
a year-long wait.
Following the decision, city
council acting head of resource
consents Andy Christofferson
wrote in a memorandum to
Mayor Lianne Dalziel, the
panel’s ruling would be “valuable
in shaping city council officers
thinking on this matter going
forward.”
The decision was made the day
after more than 100 residents
met with Christchurch Coastal
Residents’ United to hear about
issues being faced by coastal
property owners when trying
to get resource and building
consents.
HOT TOPIC:
About 100
people
packed into
the Redcliffs
Bowling Club
to discuss
the effects of
climate change
on property.
RELIEF: Resource consent has been granted to build on this
waterfront section in Redcliffs.
The meeting looked at how
1486 sites in a Restricted Unit
Overlay within the High Flood
Hazard Management Area are
being treated by city council
planners.
Most of the sites are in
Redcliffs, South Brighton and
Southshore.
CCRU says a restricted
discretionary activity rule for
properties inside the RUO – a
rule recommended by the
replacement District Plan
independent hearings panel
– was altered when the plan
was implemented last year,
and people wanting to build
or extend are now getting into
difficulty with city council
planners.
“The final city council
produced hearing documents
omitted the key paragraph that
made the RUO effective,” CCRU
chairman Simon Watts said
Artisan Homes
Builders of superior homes. Built to last.
at the meeting. However, the
city council rebutted Mr Watts’
claim.
Said city council head
of planning and strategic
transport David Griffiths:
“The Christchurch District
Plan contains the restricted
discretionary activity rule . . .
as decided by the Independent
Hearings Panel in their Decision
53.”
Question marks remain over
whether owners will be able to
build within the RUO – a subset
of more than 1400 properties
where the hazard is from sea
level rise, not river breaches
– after the hearing panel said
Mrs Gilchrist’s consent was an
exception and “cannot in any
way create a planning precedent
for applications on sites in other
parts of the Residential Unit
Overlay.”
Last month Labour MPs Ruth
Dyson, Duncan Webb and Poto
Williams met with members of
CCRU and Dr Latham to discuss
the problem and a potential
remedy.
Ms Dyson said after that
meeting they had agreed to do
further investigations before
making a decision on “what
intervention, if any, is necessary
or appropriate.”
Fight
starts to
keep
fireworks
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
COASTAL AND Burwood
wards councillors David East
and Glenn Livingstone have
pledged to fight against the
annual New Brighton fireworks
event being taken away from the
pier.
They say they will work hard
to retain the New Brighton Guy
Fawkes in the area.
It comes after the event has
come under scrutiny from the
city council as part of a city wide
review of all council- run events.
It confirmed last week the
event would go ahead in November,
and if there were to be
any changes, they would not be
implemented this year.
Cr East said he would be
debating strongly and working
hard to persuade other city
councillors of the merit and
worth of retaining a display on
the coast. He said the items he
would be stressing is the event
makes for great viewing, all fireworks
land in the sea, making it
easy to clean up and no one is at
risk of being hit, he said.
Cr Livingstone said the
fireworks should stay. “The
question has been raised before
over safety concerns but my
view is wherever you hold the
fireworks there is going to be
safety concerns that need to be
addressed anyway.” He said he
suspects council would be faced
with a unanimous resolution
from the Coastal- Burwood Community
Board to keep the event
where it is. City council community
support, governance and
partnerships John Filsell said
last week for a number of years it
has received feedback on traffic
management congestion.
But Cr East said while there is
difficulties for traffic exiting the
event, the east has been compounded
by ongoing roadworks.
FREE digital media course, with NCEA built in
For those looking for a role that combines
artistic and digital talents, then this outstanding,
FREE, entry level course has just been announced
by local Training Provider Trainme, for those
wishing to pursue animation, graphic design,
photography or digital media as a career.
The course covers introduction to multi-media
techniques such as video production, drawing,
animation and photography. Students will create
their own design concepts and collaborate with
other students on creative projects.
This course is FREE to students aged 16 to 19
and they only have to have NCEA 1 to join.
Students without NCEA 1 can be admitted, if they
show artistic or digital aptitude.
“Many feel that school is not working for them
or they left without qualifications,” says Gary
Taylor, Campus Manager with tertiary educator
Trainme. “While not necessarily academically
minded, they do have artistic talents and are very
much into digital technology.”
“This FREE six-month Trainme course, combines
these in a very hands-on, practical way, giving
them an intro into various digital media. This way,
they can decide which direction to pursue as their
career focus.”
“As an NZQA approved programme, NCEA
credits are built in, so if they apply themselves, they
can graduate with a New Zealand Certificate in Arts
and Design Level 2, as well as gaining credits
towards NCEA level 1 or 2.” Says Taylor.
“NCEA results will depend on how many credit
they bring to the course to start with, but as it’s a fun
subject, it won’t feel like school at all.”
Successful Graduates from this programme could
pathway into higher study in media arts, which could
include graphic design, video production,
photography or one of the many emerging digitalbased
careers. Places are limited, so students are
encouraged to apply as soon as they can.
Street Wise pot luck dinner for Waltham homeless
• By Sarla Donovan
STREET WISE is providing help
of a different kind to the city’s
homeless.
Merivale’s River Jayden helped
found the charity three months
ago while working as a building
apprentice in the central city.
The charity is ramping up its
efforts and held a community
pot luck for homeless whanau
in Waltham on Saturday at nonprofit
cafe, Exchange Christchurch.
The function, called Everybody
Eats provided free haircuts, barista
training, care packages and
baking, motivational speakers,
dinner and an open jam session.
Ms Jayden said she eventually
wanted Street Wise to provide
a transitional facility to support
people to move into permanent
housing.
The charity provides food,
clothes and advocacy for those
sleeping rough. “We’ve been going
for three months and it’s been
pretty full on,” said Ms Jayden,
who is the charity’s chairwoman.
“We give the guys coffee, cakes,
chats. It’s the fun stuff mainly,
but through that we can also find
out about their situation and refer
them on to housing programmes
or drug and alcohol support.”
While homelessness is
“definitely” a big problem in the
central city, there is a less visible
homeless population living on
the outskirts that people may be
less aware of, Ms Jayden said.
“It’s those sleeping on couches,
in garages, in cars. It’s a massive
issue – 41,000 people experience
homelessness in New Zealand.
Of them, most are living with
whanau and friends in overcrowded
homes.”
She said a small percentage
of homeless people sleep on the
street. Funding to support the
work Street Wise does is tight,
but Ms Jayden said “there are
creative ways to find the money
to do these projects. I’m confident
we can make it happen. We have
a good amount of support from
investors.”
DEAF WOMAN Jocelyn Thorpe
has never learned sign language.
So when the opportunity came
up for the pre-school teacher
to learn it with her pupils, she
jumped at the chance.
Ms Thorpe and the children
at Haven Early Learning Centre,
in Linwood have been learning
the basics of New Zealand Sign
Language with the help of van
Asch Deaf Education Centre tutor
Victoria Green.
She said the pre-school welcomed
her with open arms when
she took up her teaching position
at the centre.
“The children have just accepted
me as who I am, not
necessarily as a deaf person, but
just as Jocelyn.”
Ms Thorpe, who could hear
with the help of a cochlear implant,
said learning sign language
could help the children be more
accepting of hearing-impaired
people in their community.
“It has been wonderful, actually,
because they are just so
receptive to learning another way
of communication. And they
seem even more intrigued to find
out that it can help a person that
has got a hearing impairment,”
she said.
“They know that if somebody
has a hearing impairment
. . . they need to use their sign
language.”
The youngsters had picked up
sign language really well, and
could all sign their name. “We
don’t have high expectations, we
let children learn at their own
pace. So some are quite happy
to use just a few signs, others are
happy to do a few more. We just
celebrate what they have learnt.”
Ms Thorpe said parents often
sat in on the sessions to join their
children in learning sign language,
which encouraged them to
use it outside of pre-school.
The idea to kick start sign language
lessons at the centre came
from teacher Clair McConchie.
Ms McConchie said it was important
for the children to learn
NZSL, not only to communicate
with hearing impaired people,
but also to use sign as a way of
expressing themselves.
“They know signs like ‘hungry’
and ‘thirsty’ . . . so they can communicate
every day sentences by
using their signs.” She had been
learning sign language herself
for the past three months, and
wanted to share what she had
learnt with the children.
“More people should learn (sign
language). I hope it catches on to
other pre-schools; it’s so important,
it just bridges that gap in the
deaf community.”
Souvlaki King “Delicious and
recent additions to their menu is their
big hits with their lunch crowd.
“All our ingredients are locally
produce and meat will be served to
our customers.” The owner states
The locally owned Souvlaki King
souvlaki outlet after noting a lack
‘Emotional’ dance
earns Cashmere HS
students recognition
ACHIEVEMENT: Cashmere
High School students were
awarded second place
for their performance at
Showquest 2018.
• By Ashleigh Monk
BATTLING AGAINST depression and
anxiety served as inspiration for an
‘emotional’ dance.
A group of students from Cashmere
High School were placed second, after
Darfield High School, at this year’s Showquest
in Christchurch.
On Tuesday, year 12 students Sophie
Harris and Dani Damm helped lead their
40-strong team in a dance which focused
on mental health.
“We wanted to show a day in the life
of someone who suffers from depression
and anxiety,” Dani said.
“We wanted to show that it was okay
to have good days and bad days, and that
you can get through the bad days, it’s
okay that they’re there.”
The pair said they wanted to communicate
through their dance that it can affect
anyone at any time.
“We wanted to get the audience to really
feel it as well,” Sophie said.
“It’s not something that you can just
dance through and it’s not something
that you can just hope will go away and
clear up, there is a real battle behind it.”
They said there were “quite a few injuries”
during the nine weeks of rehearsals,
including one girl who hurt her knee and
ended up watching the performance from
a wheelchair in the audience.
But in spite of a few bumps in the road,
Sophie said the group were ‘stoked’ to be
a part of Showquest.
“Even before performing and getting
second place, we were all pretty stoked
with the way it turned out. It was emotional
. . . we had a bit of a cry before we
went on stage.”
And Dani said she was ‘amazed’ by the
performance first place winners Darfield
High School.
“Darfield, oh my gosh their piece was
incredible. They really did shine that
night, it was amazing.”
Showquest was staged across the country
this year, with an overall national
winner to be announced in September.
WINNERS: Cashmere High School first XI football captain Alex Meaclem,
left, receives the Connetics Challenge Shield from St Thomas of Canterbury
captain Tom Stewart after Cashmere’s 2-1 win.
Cashmere claim
football shield
• By Jacob Page
THE CASHMERE High
School first XI boys
football team are the new
holders of the Connetics
Challenge Shield after
beating St Thomas’
of Canterbury 2-1 on
Wednesday.
It is the first time in
more than two years they
have had it in their trophy
cabinet.
The shield is played
for between Canterbury
secondary school football
teams and is premier
competition’s Ranfurly
Shield equivalent.
Cashmere started
brilliantly against the
competition’s top team
with an early goal to Axel
Tritt from a free kick
by Eddie Wilkinson
Cashmere then took
control of the first half
with Jake Grove scoring a
brilliant goal to Cashmere
2-0 up.
St Thomas’ came out
strong in the second half
and did pull one goal back
but Cashmere held on for
the remainder of the half.
Coach Craig Squire said
his team’s effort and desire
on defence had been a
positive so far this year.
“While Cashmere teams
in the past have always
been team which could
score goals, often our
defence was quite leaky,”
he said.
This season, Cashmere
has scored 37 goals and
conceded just seven.
Squire said the aim
of his team was to win
the competition and he
believed after that result,
the team would gain
plenty of confidence.
Cashmere are now
second on the ladder,
three points behind St
Thomas’ but with a game
in hand.
Cashmere High School
will play Christ’s College
tomorrow in their next
competition fixture.
SCHOOL OPTIONS - early & middle years 2019
Small co-ed classes at St Michael’s
Is your child one of 15 or 50? Is their
classroom calm and productive
or a disharmony of noise and
movement? How much of their
teacher’s attention does your child
actually receive?
At St Michael’s, our small co-ed classes
and specialist teachers ensure your child is
an individual, well known by staff and fellow
pupils alike. For at the heart of St Michael’s
are the essential values of Christian faith
and good citizenship: respect, integrity,
faith, hope and love.
St Michael’s is a prep school so your
child is assured of a traditional foundation
in English and Mathematics. This
academic rigour then underpins our wider
curriculums in Science, History, Geography
and Spanish. IT literacy is taught, not
assumed, and computer use is measured.
We like teaching and talking to our pupils!
Cultural and sports’ programmes
develop your child’s foundation further,
as creativity and problem-solving come
in many forms. Specialist art and music
classes are enjoyed weekly; and most pupils
play at least one instrument, whether piano
or flute, bassoon or bongos. There are two
choirs, and drama lessons.
And our extended campus is spectacular:
today, the Art Gallery; tomorrow, the
Gardens; next week…
St Michael’s has been nurturing and
educating children for 167 years, and our
pupils come from city-wide, arriving via
the bus exchange only a block away or
with parents who work in the thriving city
centre.
You and your child are warmly welcome
to discover for yourselves our purposeful,
wholehearted and inclusive prep school.
Cathedral Grammar
The Cathedral Grammar School is an
independent school providing high-quality
education for pre-school, primary school
and intermediate aged girls and boys.
This is a place of ambition alongside
preparation where students learn from the
best right from the start. Every year level
benefits from the expertise of our highcalibre
specialist teachers across multiple
subjects. And small class sizes means a
lot of individual attention so every child’s
strengths are identified and built on and
support provided where and when needed.
Our school structure is unique and
designed to ensure students have the
opportunity to make the most of their
formative school years. We understand
learning happens in different ways at
different ages; our students work in both
co-educational and single-sex learning
environments at times when this best suits
their learning styles. In Pre-School and
the Junior School children learn in a coeducational
environment. Students in Years
4 to 8 attend either our Boys’ or Girls’ School.
Allowing students the best of both worlds,
single sex classes offer the opportunity to
target and deliver the curriculum in the
most effective and interesting style possible,
while social skills are developed by sharing
mixed-environment break times, specialist
classes and activities.
Creativity and culture play a
big role here with four choirs and
hundreds of individual music,
speech and drama lessons every
week. We’re also a proud sporting
school, providing students with
the facilities and encouragement
to try their hand at a range of
sports and recreation activities.
Ultimately, we are committed
to providing a balance of
tradition and rigour, while being
curious and adventurous every
day.
Let the learning
adventure begin
SCHOOL OPTIONS - early & middle years 2019
Middle schooling
makes a difference
Having a curriculum and learning
environment designed specifically for
learners in the “middle years” (Years 7-10) is
essential to ensure high levels of motivation
and engagement in learning during this
crucial stage of schooling.
At Hillmorton High School having a
consistent approach without a transition
to a new school between Year 8 and 9 is
proving to be positive in terms of
accelerating student learning within
the Middle School.
We are currently working with
our architects designing a new
Middle School building with 22
“General Learning Areas”. These
areas are flexible and can operate as
single cell classrooms or be opened
up to allow more open learning
spaces – the best of both worlds.
This building will not disrupt
learning as it is being built on the
current tennis courts.
This environment fits well
with our broad Middle School
curriculum allowing learners to
explore and find both their strengths
and passions.
The advantage of combining
the skills of Year 7 and 8 specialist
teachers with the subject specialists
of a high school gives our Middle
School learners a huge advantage.
Additionally, our “Big Day Out”
events and end of year student
electives allow our young people to learn in
a range of environments often participating
in social action such as planting, working
with the elderly, along with exploring the
city, the Art Gallery and the university.
Our Middle School is ensuring real
educational success and positive future
prospects as students move into the Senior
School for Years 11-13.
Providing
our students
with learning
and personal
growth
opportunities
At St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School,
our mission is that we are “choosing
to be an innovative, catholic learning
community that inspires and empowers
learners to succeed.”
We are committed to inspiring and
empowering students for success,
through the implementation of innovative
instructional practices, leveraging digital
technology, ensuring equity of access for
all.
We offer a range of sporting and cultural,
innovative and creative opportunities.
Teaching and learning experiences are
personalised for our students and value
student voice.
Within our new flexible learning spaces
every child has the opportunity to learn
through authentic contexts, solving real
world problems.
Together we continue to innovate within
a Catholic learning environment where all
learners are inspired to learn, create and
share. We are creating learners who will
not only be successful but will become
people who will positively impact on their
world.
SCHOOL OPTIONS - early & middle years 2019
Selwyn House School -
small class sizes and talented
teaching staff
For primary school, every parent wants
to ensure their child is receiving the best
foundation for their academic future.
Selwyn House School has small class sizes
and a talented teaching staff set within a
nurturing environment and an extensive
range of opportunities.
Selwyn House offers the International
Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years
Programme (PYP) and is proud to be a
leading STEAM focused school. We not only
encourage our girls to work in advanced
STEAM fields, we want our girls to lead
them. Our STEAM Hub provides every
student from Year 1 to 8 access to stateof-the-art
equipment. In Mechatronics,
girls learn the foundations of mechanical
and electrical knowledge. Robotics is
introduced as an interdisciplinary, projectbased
learning activity drawing mostly
on mathematics, science and technology.
Learning is also enhanced by additional
opportunities including the 2018 Space
Camp trip where 18 girls will travel to the
United States to attend a week-long Space
Camp.
A supportive all-girl learning
environment encourages girls to take
risks without fear of failure. As the girls
progress they are confident in their
abilities, understanding that perseverance
helps them grow. A school-wide buddy
programme provides each girl with support
and mentoring.
Learning is personalised and each
teacher has the time to foster authentic
and meaningful relationships. Strong
relationships between the class teacher and
family ensure each girl’s learning journey
is nurtured by a partnership of support.
Teachers construct learning activities
to help each girl identify their personal
strengths.
Selwyn House believes these strengths
can be applied to academic tasks
and become more powerful with the
acquisition of skills and knowledge, aiding
intellectual development and academic
achievement. For this reason core learning
in reading, writing and mathematics is
a priority. Specialist teachers in Spanish,
Mechatronics, Art, Science, Physical
Education, Swimming, Performing Arts
and Music work with classroom teachers to
help identify the strengths of every girl.
The environment at Selwyn House
empowers each girl to embrace their future
and develop a love of learning. A Selwyn
House girl will learn to define herself,
accept responsibility, form opinions,
and have compassion for the world. This
combination of achievement, confidence,
and character makes a Selwyn House
education a powerful and transformative
experience.
ON THE MOVE: St Thomas footballer Hamish Cooper is one of two Christchurch
United teenagers set to train with Sydney FC.
with Sydney FC
ST THOMAS’ footballer
Hamish Cooper is one
of two Christchurch
United stars set to get
an invaluable taste of
professional football at
Sydney FC, the glamour
club in the A-League.
Cooper and St Andrew’s
player Riley Caswell,
who both just turned 17
but already play for the
Christchurch United first
team, have been invited
to train with the Sydney
club. Sydney FC were last
season’s A-League minor
premiers and losing finalists
and won the A-league
in 2017.
The opportunity arose
through the contacts of
Christchurch United head
coach Fernando Lambert
who coached at Manly
United in Sydney for five
years. He also spent four
months as an apprentice
coach at Sydney FC with
Robert Stanton, who runs
the club’s first team and
young league side.
Lambert says that both
players have a big potential
and the Yaldhurst-based
Christchurch United
wants to give its players
the best opportunities to
develop.
“This may not be ideal
for our club as they will
miss a few games, but
our club is focused on
developing great players
for the future and for New
Zealand football, and not
just looking at short-term
results,” said Lambert.
“This trip to Sydney will
show our youngsters the
next level they need to be
aiming for and what is
required in a professional
environment.”
Caswell headed over on
Sunday to train with the
Sydney first team, which
is the feeder team for the
A-League squad and regularly
trains with the club’s
superstars.
The central defender
feels he has earned this
opportunity with his performances
in Christchurch
United’s first team.
“I’m definitely excited
and slightly nervous, but
I’m grateful to have the opportunity
to travel across
to Australia,” said Caswell.
“It is a great opportunity
to experience what football
is like in other countries
and to compete against top
players”
Cooper will go over the
following week to spend a
fortnight with the Sydney
FC Academy squad.
The right fullback is
grateful to Christchurch
United and coach Fernando
Lambert for giving
him first-team experience
at 16 and to open the doors
to overseas opportunities.
“The move to Christchurch
United had definitely
paid off because I am not
sure if I would have had
those opportunities at
my previous club,” says
Hamish who is pursuing a
career in football, as player
or coach.
“At Sydney FC, I want
to compare myself to the
other players my age in
Australia to see where I
need to improve,” said
Cooper.
Grape seeds
shown to have
remarkable
health benefits!
According to researchers grape seeds
may hold the potential to treat and prevent
many devastating disorders. The seeds
have been found to contain many powerful
antioxidant that have been shown to
support the natural healing process and
even slow the aging process.
Grape Seed Extract (GSE) has been shown
to reduce inflammation, pain, increase
cell energy, protect protein structures and
increase collagen production. The powerful
antioxidants can tone and strengthen
the blood vessels, improve blood flow,
making it valuable for circulatory disorders
of all kinds, including varicose veins,
haemorrhoids, hardening of the arteries
and impaired blood flow to the brain. It
is excellent for most skin conditions with
many noticing the skin becomes smoother.
GSE offers a natural alternative for many
people with hypertension. (High Blood
Pressure) Higher B/P puts more stress
on organs and can lead to atherosclerosis
(hardening of the arteries) and increased
risk of heart disease and strokes.
Recent studies on people with elevated
B/P found GSE to significantly lower B/P
but with no effect on people with normal
B/P. Animal studies have shown GSE to
improve heart function, reduce damage
caused by heart attacks and prevent arterial
plaque.
A growing number of studies show that
GSE has powerful anticancer properties,
can help balance blood sugar, improve
arthritis and protect brain cells. It may prove
vital in the treatment of brain disorders like
Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
Numerous studies on GSE show it can
help support our good health and prevent
many degenerative diseases. Further
deficient in B12
Emerging research has shown as many as 50% of older adults and
as many as 25% of younger adults are deficient in vitamin B12.
Scientists at Rush University Medical
Center found those most deficient
in vitamin B12 to have the smallest
brain mass and the lowest scores on
tests measuring short-term memory,
concentration and brain performance.
Another study showed that older people
with higher levels of B12 in their blood
have bigger, healthier brains and score
higher on cognitive tests than those with
lower levels. Yet another recent landmark
study showed that B12 supplementation
slows the accelerated rate of brain
shrinkage and declining cognitive function.
B12 is essential for energy production, cell
health, regulation of mood and sleep cycles,
nerve health and repair, and prevention
of homocysteine a serious cardiovascular
risk factor that is known to cause damage
and plaque in the blood vessels. It can also
increase the chances of a stroke. Harvard
researchers found
a 34% decrease
risk of vision
loss in a study
of participants
aged 40+ who
supplemented with
B12. Another study
linked a higher risk of hearing loss in
DIFFICULTY SLEEPING, PINS & NEEDLES, NUMBNESS IN LEGS
Up to 1 in 2 people may have a shrinking brain due to a lack of vitamin B12.
Supplementation of methylcobalamin B12 has been shown to reduce the rate of brain
shrinkage & support memory & brain function. B12 is also known to protect against
homocysteine a serious cardiovascular risk factor that can also damage the hearing,
subjects in their 60’s who were low in B12.
The reason so many people lack B12
appears to be our body’s ability to absorb
it declining with age as the digestive
system becomes less efficient. Anti-reflux
medication and other drugs further reduce
B12 absorption. The good news is B12 in
the form of Methylcobalamin sublingual
tablets that are dissolved in the mouth and
been shown to effectively raise B12 levels in
HOME & HEATING
Choosing the
right heat pump
for your home
Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit,
most homes include at least one heat pump,
if not a whole heating solution. They can
provide cheap, clean heat and are much more
convenient than a log burner as you just need
to press a button. But how do you decide what
is best? Choosing the right sized heat pump is
key to ensuring optimum comfort levels. Every
situation varies and it is therefore important
to get professional advice from heat pump
experts.
The range varies from wall mounted high
walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems,
ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted
central heating systems allowing you to have a
very discreet way of heating your whole home
to a constant temperature throughout.
Firstly, you must select a heat pump that
is suitable for the size of the space you wish
to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to
ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area
taken into consideration but also, insulation,
building orientation, windows and ceiling
space. There are a wide range of heat pumps
available with different heating outputs so it
is important to select the correct size for your
requirements that will handle the job but not
be unnecessarily overpowered.
Secondly, the location of your heat pump
is also extremely important. The cheapest
installation is a back to back where the outdoor
unit is positioned directly behind the indoor
unit however this is not necessarily always
the best option. It is vital that the indoor
unit is positioned in a place that will not be
SOUTHERN VIEW
constantly blowing on you. Also important, is
the location of the outdoor unit. Most people
do not want their outdoor unit sitting directly
in their outdoor entertaining area or right
outside their bedroom window.
Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands
have come and gone over the years but there
are a number of manufacturers who provide
reputable and reliable products. All brands vary
in their energy efficiency, quietness of systems
and price, so it depends on your application as
to which will be most suitable. Major brands
such as Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin,
Toshiba and Hitachi are all reliable brands
backed up by good technical after sales service.
Ensure your heat pump is installed by an
accredited installer. This will not only ensure
correct installation of your heat pump, but also
validate the manufacturers warranty.
Other things to consider when choosing a
heat pump are time clocks, ease of use of the
remote controllers, air filtration and also wifi
capabilities.
Heating is a major investment in your home
and it is vital to get the right advice.
Enviro Master Ltd specialise in the supply,
installation and servicing of all major brands
of heat pumps. Our salesmen are engineers
ensuring you get quality, unbiased advice as
to which system will suit your application
the best. Enviro Master Ltd offer a free, no
HOME & HEATING
Get rid of
dampness
in your house
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm and
healthy for their families throughout winter.
Rising damp is an issue that affects many of
our older properties which suffer from poor, or
no, insulation. In Canterbury especially, postquake,
many people have relocated to homes
that suffer from rising damp which can be
associated with health problems. Independent
tests have shown that up to 40 litres of water can
rise from the ground and enter a house every
day, leading to mildew, mould, condensation
and musty smells. Moulds can produce
various allergic reactions and the
frail, elderly and very young are
especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete
Ltd is a locally owned and
operated firm. The team
understands the problems
caused by rising damp and are
there to help. They will come
to your damp home and pump
a lightweight, flowable foam
concrete under your timber
floored home. Specially adapted
for our New Zealand conditions and
applications it provides a layer of protection
against rising moisture. An unexpected
benefit that the team at Canterbury Foam
Concrete have noticed recently, is that many
owners of properties which had underfloor
foam concrete installed, reported that it also
provided protection against liquefaction after
the earthquakes.
Contact Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd
now for your free, no obligation quote and
complimentary appraisal of your underfloor
ventilation needs. Phone 03 376 4608 or
0508 362626 for more information.
What does this mean if you have a tenant? It is very likely they will be checking, as what an incentive!
($4000.00). MBIE has said there are no excuses as landlords have had 3 years by July 2019 to get their
properties up to compliance. Christchurch City Council have been running a scheme called Build Back
this program and are issuing compliance certificates to landlords (if they comply of course)
THAT’S right folks! DND Showband returns
to the Hornby Club this Saturday with the
original line up.
“We’ve had a lot of fun putting this show
together, ”said Jo-Anne Davern, performer
and manager of the band. “It’s been a good
couple of years since this line up last
performed together and I’m amazed at how
simply we all slotted back in place. It’s like
we were never apart.”
Joining Jo on stage will be regular
members Ben Harvey (guitar, vocals); Grant
McPhie (bass, keys); and Mark Newburn
(drums, vocals), along with showband
chanteuses Michele Webb, Gina Gilbreath,
and Mel Lawson.
Christchurch based DnD Showband has
been delighting audiences across the
country with their multi-tribute theme
shows for an incredible ten years. In
rehearsal mode for Saturday’s show, the 7
piece troupe has been busy fine tuning show
content, sorting costumes and tightening up
moves.
“We’ve put together a great play list
guaranteed to get everyone up dancing.
We’re opening with a set of 50s/60s tunes,
followed by our Moulin Rouge theme set
that brims with disco dance anthems of the
70s/80s, and concluding with our tribute to
ABBA,” said Jo. “And for those who prefer to
listen and watch, our professional tech’s
Peter Standring and Peter ‘Pedro’ Buchan-Ng
will be out front running our audio and
light systems to ensure it sounds and looks
wonderful.”
Tickets $20 on sale now at the Hornby
