at entrance to shopping centre

RESIDENTS describe the 

Barrington shopping centre 

entrance as an intersection were 

you ‘take your life into your own 

hands.’ 

But after a battle which has 

lasted ‘some years’ the city 

council is finally asking for 

feedback on proposed changes to 

make the area safer.

Network chairwoman Sonya 

Hodder said the group had 

tried time and time again to 

spur action to improve the 

intersection. 

“We are feeling really very 

grateful that the money has been 

set aside to do it,” she said. 

The proposed changes 

included installing a wider 

footpath in front of the library, 

stopping motorists turning 

right out of the entrance onto 

Barrington St, extending a 

pedestrian refuge and creating 

a patterned footpath across the 

access to the shopping centre to 

highlight a pedestrian route. 

In June a video survey 

concluded that about 115 

pedestrians crossed the 

entranceway at the peak time 

between 4pm and 6pm. 

Mrs Hodder lived on 

Barrington St and often visited 

the mall but said she avoided 

using the main entrance at all 

costs. 

“I’ve seen so many near misses. 

I’ve even seen a cyclist who 

has been knocked off his 

bike.” 

But she said some concerns 

raised by residents regarding 

narrow footpaths were the mall’s 

responsibility. 

“The mall’s problem is that 

they’ve got very little room 

because they must provide 

so many parks to meet their 

resource consent requirements,”

have the mall there if they were

City councillor for the 

Spreydon Ward Phil Clearwater 

said the biggest issue in moving 

forward was getting all involved 

parties to agree on solutions. 

“I think the big thing is 

the mall management people 

being prepared to work with 

city council and the residents. 

I think it’s fair to say that they 

weren’t early on. But the current 

mall managers has been really 

co-operative and collaborative in 

working with different groups.” 

But Barrington shopping 

centre manager Jill Kearns said 

she did not think she and her 

staff had caused any delays in the 

process. 

“I don’t know why they would

DO I feel a sense of civil war looming 

between the good folk of Cracroft and 

Hoon Hay? 

Hopefully not. 

Cracroft people have been successful in 

getting the name Hoon Hay off their rates 

invoices - (see page 3). 

It may be a bone of contention for those living further west 

from Cracroft, in the suburb of Hoon Hay. 

A staff member here at Star Media who lives in Hoon Hay 

is fairly adamant Cracroft isn’t a suburb in its own right, and 

therefore is part of Hoon Hay. You could feel him bristling. 

But he’s not the type to take up arms, or incite a call to bring 

Cracroft back into the fold. 

But he can’t speak for others.

Cracroft residents win name battle 


CRACROFT residents 

have won their battle not to be 

referred to as Hoon Hay on their 

rates bills. 

From this week, the bills will 

have Cracroft in the address 

section. 

In May, the Spreydon-Cashmere 

community board heard 

concerns from the Cracroft Residents’ 

Association as their rates 

and valuations bills listed them 

as being a part of Hoon Hay, or 

Hoon Hay Valley. 

City councillor for the Spreydon 

Ward Phil Clearwater said 

Cracroft was a registered suburb 

and should be referred to as such. 

“It’s on the map as a suburb, 

so I think it’s fair to say the mail

Paul Curgenven said the 

confusion around Cracroft were 

due to unclear borders. 

“While Cracroft is the only 

suburb in Christchurch that has 

been geographically defined by 

the NZ Geographic Board, there 

was not an exact boundary for 

the suburb.” 

He said a correction of the 

rates and valuation bills would 

be implemented this week. 

The Cracroft Residents’ Association 

did not return calls to the

FREEDOM CAMPING 

The city council is planning 

to update freedom camping 

signage at the north and 

south ramps in New Brighton 

following a request from the 

Coastal-Burwood Community 

Board. The signage will include 

a digital QR code linking to all 

city council campgrounds. It is 

planned the new signage will be 

in place within a month. 

GODWIT SCULPTURE 

City council staff have 

confirmed the Kuaka/Godwit 

sculpture planned for Bridge St 

is exempt from the building and 

resource consent. Pegasus Post 

previously reported there had 

been some delays in the project 

due to the resource consent 

process and getting the funds 

raised. The sculpture is set to be 

complete in October in time for 

the Godwits’ arrival. 

SLATER STREET UPDATE 

Richmond’s Slater St was reopened 

last week. The street has 

been closed as part of the Dudley 

Creek Flood Remediation 

project. Three earthquake 

damaged sewer laterals have 

been replaced by City Care.

Save the park petition delivered to Parliament

A PETITION asking that 

Redcliffs School return to its 

former Main Rd site has been 

delivered to Parliament. 

Christchurch Central Labour 

MP Duncan Webb presented the 

200-signature petition on behalf 

of Friends of Redcliffs Park. 

The petition has been referred 

to the Education and Workforce 

Select Committee to consider 

when it meets later this month. 

It calls for urgent legislation 

enabling the school to reopen on 

the former Main Rd site and to 

spare it from being demolished.

spokesman Chris Doudney 

said he was hopeful the select 

committee would consider the

Green light for waterfront build

Redcliffs could have a flow-on 

effect for others in the same 

situation.

Gilchrist said she was “greatly 

relieved” that an independent 

hearing panel granted her 

resource consent to build on a 

waterfront site in Main Rd after 

a year-long wait. 

Following the decision, city 

council acting head of resource 

consents Andy Christofferson 

wrote in a memorandum to 

Mayor Lianne Dalziel, the 

panel’s ruling would be “valuable 

in shaping city council officers 

thinking on this matter going 

forward.” 

The decision was made the day 

after more than 100 residents 

met with Christchurch Coastal 

Residents’ United to hear about 

issues being faced by coastal 

property owners when trying 

to get resource and building 

consents.

Ms Dyson said after that 

meeting they had agreed to do 

further investigations before 

making a decision on “what 

intervention, if any, is necessary 

or appropriate.”

fireworks

wards councillors David East 

and Glenn Livingstone have 

pledged to fight against the 

annual New Brighton fireworks 

event being taken away from the 

pier. 

They say they will work hard 

to retain the New Brighton Guy 

Fawkes in the area. 

It comes after the event has 

come under scrutiny from the 

city council as part of a city wide 

review of all council- run events. 

It confirmed last week the 

event would go ahead in November, 

and if there were to be 

any changes, they would not be 

implemented this year. 

Cr East said he would be 

debating strongly and working 

hard to persuade other city 

councillors of the merit and 

worth of retaining a display on 

the coast. He said the items he 

would be stressing is the event 

makes for great viewing, all fireworks 

land in the sea, making it 

easy to clean up and no one is at 

risk of being hit, he said. 

Cr Livingstone said the 

fireworks should stay. “The 

question has been raised before 

over safety concerns but my 

view is wherever you hold the 

fireworks there is going to be 

safety concerns that need to be 

addressed anyway.” He said he 

suspects council would be faced 

with a unanimous resolution 

from the Coastal- Burwood Community 

Board to keep the event 

where it is. City council community 

support, governance and 

partnerships John Filsell said 

last week for a number of years it 

has received feedback on traffic 

management congestion. 

But Cr East said while there is 

difficulties for traffic exiting the 

event, the east has been compounded 

by ongoing roadworks.

The annual exhibition of art 

and craft by the Sumner Art 

Society is taking place this Friday, 

Saturday and Sunday at the 

Redcliffs/Mt Pleasant Bowling 

Club. 

The long-standing group of 

artists meet weekly on Wednesdays 

in the Mt Pleasant Yacht 

Club to support and learn from 

each other as well as generally 

have a laugh. 

This year members of the 

group exhibited at the Christchurch 

South Library. 

Painter Kilmeny Keyse said 

the opportunity to hang larger 

works in such an open space 

was exciting and “very well 

received.” 

The artists have many more 

new paintings to show at this 

weekend’s event, with large and 

small pictures in a wide range of 

mediums to enliven your homes.

by local Training Provider Trainme, for those 

wishing to pursue animation, graphic design, 

photography or digital media as a career. 

The course covers introduction to multi-media 

techniques such as video production, drawing, 

animation and photography. Students will create 

their own design concepts and collaborate with 

other students on creative projects.

minded, they do have artistic talents and are very 

much into digital technology.” 

“This FREE six-month Trainme course, combines 

these in a very hands-on, practical way, giving 

them an intro into various digital media. This way, 

they can decide which direction to pursue as their 

career focus.” 

“As an NZQA approved programme, NCEA 

credits are built in, so if they apply themselves, they 

can graduate with a New Zealand Certificate in Arts 

and Design Level 2, as well as gaining credits 

towards NCEA level 1 or 2.” Says Taylor. 

“NCEA results will depend on how many credit 

they bring to the course to start with, but as it’s a fun 

subject, it won’t feel like school at all.” 

Successful Graduates from this programme could 

pathway into higher study in media arts, which could 

include graphic design, video production, 

photography or one of the many emerging digitalbased 

careers. Places are limited, so students are 

encouraged to apply as soon as they can.

Street Wise pot luck dinner for Waltham homeless 


STREET WISE is providing help 

of a different kind to the city’s 

homeless. 

Merivale’s River Jayden helped 

found the charity three months 

ago while working as a building 

apprentice in the central city. 

The charity is ramping up its 

efforts and held a community 

pot luck for homeless whanau 

in Waltham on Saturday at nonprofit 

cafe, Exchange Christchurch. 

The function, called Everybody 

Eats provided free haircuts, barista 

training, care packages and 

baking, motivational speakers, 

dinner and an open jam session. 

Ms Jayden said she eventually 

wanted Street Wise to provide 

a transitional facility to support 

people to move into permanent 

housing. 

The charity provides food, 

clothes and advocacy for those 

sleeping rough. “We’ve been going 

for three months and it’s been 

pretty full on,” said Ms Jayden, 

who is the charity’s chairwoman. 

“We give the guys coffee, cakes, 

chats. It’s the fun stuff mainly, 

but through that we can also find 

out about their situation and refer 

them on to housing programmes 

or drug and alcohol support.” 

While homelessness is 

“definitely” a big problem in the 

central city, there is a less visible 

homeless population living on 

the outskirts that people may be 

less aware of, Ms Jayden said. 

“It’s those sleeping on couches, 

in garages, in cars. It’s a massive 

issue – 41,000 people experience 

homelessness in New Zealand. 

Of them, most are living with 

whanau and friends in overcrowded 

homes.” 

She said a small percentage 

of homeless people sleep on the 

street. Funding to support the 

work Street Wise does is tight, 

but Ms Jayden said “there are 

creative ways to find the money 

to do these projects. I’m confident 

we can make it happen. We have 

a good amount of support from 

investors.”

DEAF WOMAN Jocelyn Thorpe 

has never learned sign language. 

So when the opportunity came 

up for the pre-school teacher 

to learn it with her pupils, she 

jumped at the chance. 

Ms Thorpe and the children 

at Haven Early Learning Centre, 

in Linwood have been learning 

the basics of New Zealand Sign 

Language with the help of van 

Asch Deaf Education Centre tutor 

Victoria Green. 

She said the pre-school welcomed 

her with open arms when 

she took up her teaching position 

at the centre. 

“The children have just accepted 

me as who I am, not 

necessarily as a deaf person, but 

just as Jocelyn.” 

Ms Thorpe, who could hear 

with the help of a cochlear implant, 

said learning sign language 

could help the children be more 

accepting of hearing-impaired 

people in their community. 

“It has been wonderful, actually, 

because they are just so 

receptive to learning another way 

of communication. And they 

seem even more intrigued to find 

out that it can help a person that

“They know that if somebody 

has a hearing impairment 

. . . they need to use their sign 

language.” 

The youngsters had picked up 

sign language really well, and 

could all sign their name. “We 

don’t have high expectations, we 

let children learn at their own 

pace. So some are quite happy 

to use just a few signs, others are 

happy to do a few more. We just 

celebrate what they have learnt.” 

Ms Thorpe said parents often 

sat in on the sessions to join their 

children in learning sign language, 

which encouraged them to 

use it outside of pre-school. 

The idea to kick start sign language 

lessons at the centre came 

from teacher Clair McConchie. 

Ms McConchie said it was important 

for the children to learn 

NZSL, not only to communicate 

with hearing impaired people, 

but also to use sign as a way of 

expressing themselves. 

“They know signs like ‘hungry’ 

and ‘thirsty’ . . . so they can communicate 

every day sentences by 

using their signs.” She had been 

learning sign language herself 

for the past three months, and 

wanted to share what she had 

learnt with the children. 

“More people should learn (sign 

language). I hope it catches on to 

other pre-schools; it’s so important, 

it just bridges that gap in the 

deaf community.”

‘Emotional’ dance 

earns Cashmere HS 

students recognition 

ACHIEVEMENT: Cashmere 

High School students were 

awarded second place 

for their performance at 

Showquest 2018. 


BATTLING AGAINST depression and 

anxiety served as inspiration for an 

‘emotional’ dance. 

A group of students from Cashmere 

High School were placed second, after 

Darfield High School, at this year’s Showquest 

in Christchurch. 

On Tuesday, year 12 students Sophie 

Harris and Dani Damm helped lead their 

40-strong team in a dance which focused 

on mental health. 

“We wanted to show a day in the life 

of someone who suffers from depression 

and anxiety,” Dani said. 

“We wanted to show that it was okay 

to have good days and bad days, and that 

you can get through the bad days, it’s 

okay that they’re there.” 

The pair said they wanted to communicate 

through their dance that it can affect 

anyone at any time. 

“We wanted to get the audience to really 

feel it as well,” Sophie said. 

“It’s not something that you can just 

dance through and it’s not something 

that you can just hope will go away and 

clear up, there is a real battle behind it.” 

They said there were “quite a few injuries” 

during the nine weeks of rehearsals, 

including one girl who hurt her knee and 

ended up watching the performance from 

a wheelchair in the audience. 

But in spite of a few bumps in the road, 

Sophie said the group were ‘stoked’ to be 

a part of Showquest. 

“Even before performing and getting 

second place, we were all pretty stoked 

with the way it turned out. It was emotional 

. . . we had a bit of a cry before we 

went on stage.” 

And Dani said she was ‘amazed’ by the 

performance first place winners Darfield 

High School. 

“Darfield, oh my gosh their piece was 

incredible. They really did shine that 

night, it was amazing.” 

Showquest was staged across the country 

this year, with an overall national 

winner to be announced in September.

It is the first time in

The shield is played 

for between Canterbury 

secondary school football 

teams and is premier 

competition’s Ranfurly 

Shield equivalent. 

Cashmere started 

brilliantly against the 

competition’s top team 

with an early goal to Axel 

Tritt from a free kick

Cashmere then took 

control of the first half 

with Jake Grove scoring a 

brilliant goal to Cashmere 

2-0 up. 

St Thomas’ came out 

strong in the second half 

and did pull one goal back 

but Cashmere held on for 

the remainder of the half. 

Coach Craig Squire said 

his team’s effort and desire 

on defence had been a 

positive so far this year. 

“While Cashmere teams 

in the past have always 

been team which could 

score goals, often our 

defence was quite leaky,” 

he said. 

This season, Cashmere 

has scored 37 goals and 

conceded just seven. 

Squire said the aim 

of his team was to win 

the competition and he 

believed after that result, 

the team would gain 

plenty of confidence. 

Cashmere are now 

second on the ladder, 

three points behind St 

Thomas’ but with a game 

in hand. 

Cashmere High School 

will play Christ’s College 

tomorrow in their next 

competition fixture.

Having a curriculum and learning

learners in the “middle years” (Years 7-10) is

Sydney FC, the glamour 

club in the A-League. 

Cooper and St Andrew’s 

player Riley Caswell, 

who both just turned 17 

but already play for the 

Christchurch United first 

team, have been invited 

to train with the Sydney 

club. Sydney FC were last 

season’s A-League minor 

premiers and losing finalists 

and won the A-league 

in 2017. 

The opportunity arose 

through the contacts of 

Christchurch United head 

coach Fernando Lambert 

who coached at Manly 

United in Sydney for five 

years. He also spent four 

months as an apprentice 

coach at Sydney FC with 

Robert Stanton, who runs 

the club’s first team and 

young league side. 

Lambert says that both 

players have a big potential 

and the Yaldhurst-based 

Christchurch United 

wants to give its players 

the best opportunities to 

develop. 

“This may not be ideal 

for our club as they will 

miss a few games, but 

our club is focused on 

developing great players 

for the future and for New 

Zealand football, and not 

just looking at short-term 

results,” said Lambert. 

“This trip to Sydney will 

show our youngsters the 

next level they need to be 

aiming for and what is 

required in a professional 

environment.” 

Caswell headed over on 

Sunday to train with the 

Sydney first team, which 

is the feeder team for the 

A-League squad and regularly 

trains with the club’s 

superstars. 

The central defender 

feels he has earned this 

opportunity with his performances 

in Christchurch 

United’s first team. 

“I’m definitely excited 

and slightly nervous, but 

I’m grateful to have the opportunity 

to travel across 

to Australia,” said Caswell. 

“It is a great opportunity 

to experience what football 

is like in other countries 

and to compete against top 

players” 

Cooper will go over the 

following week to spend a 

fortnight with the Sydney 

FC Academy squad.

THAT’S right folks! DND Showband returns 

to the Hornby Club this Saturday with the 

original line up. 

“We’ve had a lot of fun putting this show 

together, ”said Jo-Anne Davern, performer 

and manager of the band. “It’s been a good 

couple of years since this line up last 

performed together and I’m amazed at how 

simply we all slotted back in place. It’s like 

we were never apart.” 

Joining Jo on stage will be regular 

members Ben Harvey (guitar, vocals); Grant 

McPhie (bass, keys); and Mark Newburn 

(drums, vocals), along with showband 

chanteuses Michele Webb, Gina Gilbreath, 

and Mel Lawson. 

Christchurch based DnD Showband has 

been delighting audiences across the 

country with their multi-tribute theme 

shows for an incredible ten years. In 

rehearsal mode for Saturday’s show, the 7 

piece troupe has been busy fine tuning show 

content, sorting costumes and tightening up 

moves. 

“We’ve put together a great play list 

guaranteed to get everyone up dancing. 

We’re opening with a set of 50s/60s tunes, 

followed by our Moulin Rouge theme set 

that brims with disco dance anthems of the 

70s/80s, and concluding with our tribute to 

ABBA,” said Jo. “And for those who prefer to 

listen and watch, our professional tech’s 

Peter Standring and Peter ‘Pedro’ Buchan-Ng 

will be out front running our audio and 

light systems to ensure it sounds and looks 

wonderful.”
