Hopefully not. Cracroft people have been successful in getting the name Hoon Hay off their rates invoices - (see page 3). It may be a bone of contention for those living further west from Cracroft, in the suburb of Hoon Hay. A staff member here at Star Media who lives in Hoon Hay is fairly adamant Cracroft isn’t a suburb in its own right, and therefore is part of Hoon Hay. You could feel him bristling. But he’s not the type to take up arms, or incite a call to bring Cracroft back into the fold. From this week, the bills will have Cracroft in the address section. In May, the Spreydon-Cashmere community board heard concerns from the Cracroft Residents’ Association as their rates and valuations bills listed them as being a part of Hoon Hay, or Hoon Hay Valley. We had to be careful about how we dealt with it.” He said the city council actually had a policy to define suburbs so that residents’ associations would not clash. “The advantage of that was it meant that one residents’ group area was quite clear about which residents they should work with,” he said. “At times, of course, there was a bit of intruding on other associations’ patches, and that was why the policy was drawn up.” City council transactions manager Paul Curgenven said the confusion around Cracroft were due to unclear borders. “While Cracroft is the only suburb in Christchurch that has been geographically defined by the NZ Geographic Board, there was not an exact boundary for the suburb.” He said a correction of the rates and valuation bills would be implemented this week. The Cracroft Residents’ Association did not return calls to the Southern View. Local News Now In Brief Fire rages, homes at risk FREEDOM CAMPING The city council is planning to update freedom camping signage at the north and south ramps in New Brighton following a request from the Coastal-Burwood Community Board. The signage will include a digital QR code linking to all city council campgrounds. It is planned the new signage will be in place within a month. GODWIT SCULPTURE City council staff have confirmed the Kuaka/Godwit sculpture planned for Bridge St is exempt from the building and resource consent. Pegasus Post previously reported there had been some delays in the project due to the resource consent process and getting the funds raised. The sculpture is set to be complete in October in time for the Godwits’ arrival. SLATER STREET UPDATE Richmond’s Slater St was reopened last week. The street has been closed as part of the Dudley Creek Flood Remediation project. Three earthquake damaged sewer laterals have been replaced by City Care. Downer Group will apply a permanent seal to the road and repair any potholes from Thursday.
