IBADAN—A<br />

27-year-old<br />

suspected ritualist, Sodiq<br />

R<strong>as</strong>heed, caught with three<br />

human skulls, w<strong>as</strong> am<strong>on</strong>g 36<br />

suspects paraded yesterday by<br />

Oyo State Police Command.<br />

R<strong>as</strong>heed w<strong>as</strong> arrested by the<br />

anti-crime patrol team of the<br />

Iyaganku Area Command al<strong>on</strong>g<br />

Ijebu-Ode/Idi Ayunre Road.<br />

According <strong>to</strong> Oyo State<br />

Commissi<strong>on</strong>er of Police, Mr.<br />

Abiodun Odude, he exhumed the<br />

skulls from a cemetery in Omi-<br />

Adio area of the State.<br />

He <strong>to</strong>ld Vanguard: “I am a tree<br />

cutter. I went <strong>to</strong> work for Alfa<br />

Hadi. He did not like my financial<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>, so he said he w<strong>as</strong> going<br />

make me rich. Alfa Hadi<br />

requested me <strong>to</strong> bring the parts<br />

for the sole purpose of m<strong>on</strong>eymaking<br />

ritual.<br />

“I went <strong>to</strong> the cemetery <strong>to</strong> dig<br />

up the skulls. I w<strong>as</strong> <strong>on</strong> my way <strong>to</strong><br />

deliver them, when I w<strong>as</strong> arrested<br />

by the Police.”<br />

Parading the suspects at the state<br />

Eleyele, Ibadan, Odude said the<br />

command, in the l<strong>as</strong>t three weeks,<br />

Also paraded w<strong>as</strong> a no<strong>to</strong>rious<br />

gang of fraudsters, who<br />

allegedly specialised in<br />

obtaining goods from<br />

unsuspecting victim using fake<br />

bank SMS alert.<br />

The gang members,<br />

numbering about six, according<br />

<strong>to</strong> the Police, fraudulently<br />

obtained 33,000 litres of diesel<br />

from <strong>on</strong>e Alhaji Yusuf<br />

Owodunmi in Apapa, Lagos.<br />

“The gang, through the use<br />

of fake SMS bank alerts,<br />

defrauded Alhaji Owodunni of<br />

N7,194,000. The suspects made<br />

frantic efforts <strong>to</strong> dispose the<br />

goods in Ibadan before luck ran<br />

out of them and were<br />

subsequently arrested by the<br />

command,” the Police boss<br />

added.<br />

Items recovered from the<br />

suspects include <strong>on</strong>e AK-47<br />

military rifle, three TV sets and<br />

<strong>on</strong>e big genera<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

Others are a truck of 33,000<br />

litres of diesel, a diverted<br />

truckload of noodles, five<br />

vehicles, mobile ph<strong>on</strong>es, <strong>on</strong>e<br />

pump acti<strong>on</strong> gun with five<br />

cartridges, watches and a power<br />

genera<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

Another man shot dead in Ado-Ekiti<br />

ADO-EKITI—BARELY four<br />

days after the killing of<br />

Bunmi Ojo, Pers<strong>on</strong>al Assistant<br />

<strong>to</strong> ex-governor Segun Oni by<br />

unknown <strong>as</strong>sailants, another<br />

man w<strong>as</strong> shot dead in broad<br />

daylight in Ado-Ekiti, yesterday.<br />

The identity of the latest victim<br />

of the unknown gunmen could<br />

not be <strong>as</strong>certained at press time.<br />

Sources at the scene said the<br />

man w<strong>as</strong> shot at a juncti<strong>on</strong> close<br />

<strong>to</strong> the end of the newlyc<strong>on</strong>structed<br />

overhead bridge at<br />

the Okesa/Ojumose Area of<br />

Ado-Ekiti at 5:30p.m.<br />

According <strong>to</strong> the eyewitnesses,<br />

the victim, who w<strong>as</strong> said <strong>to</strong> be<br />

riding <strong>on</strong> a commercial<br />

mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle popularly called<br />

Okada, w<strong>as</strong> trailed by the<br />

gunmen, who ordered the<br />

commercial mo<strong>to</strong>rcyclist<br />

c<strong>on</strong>veying the victim <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>p.<br />

They, thereafter, immediately<br />

shot him and sped off.<br />

The body of the dead<br />

p<strong>as</strong>senger w<strong>as</strong> said <strong>to</strong> have been<br />

moved <strong>to</strong> an unknown hospital<br />

by sympathisers, who thought<br />

he could survive.<br />

When newsmen got <strong>to</strong> the<br />

scene of the incident at about<br />

6p.m., bloodstains were noticed<br />

all over the scene.<br />

The incident led <strong>to</strong> the closure<br />

of many shops in and around<br />

nearby Bisi Market <strong>as</strong> traders,<br />

who either witnessed or got<br />

wind of the killing, hurriedly left<br />

for their homes.<br />

When c<strong>on</strong>tacted, the Police<br />

Public Relati<strong>on</strong>s Officer of the<br />

state command, DSP Caleb<br />

Ikechukwu, said the command<br />

w<strong>as</strong> yet <strong>to</strong> be briefed by the<br />

Divisi<strong>on</strong>al Police Officer of Okesa<br />

Divisi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

He promised <strong>to</strong> speak <strong>on</strong> the<br />

attack <strong>as</strong> so<strong>on</strong> <strong>as</strong> he gets<br />

informati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

157 pris<strong>on</strong> inmates <strong>to</strong> write<br />

THE Lagos Pris<strong>on</strong>s Command<br />

says educati<strong>on</strong> behind bars is<br />

getting more interesting with two<br />

of its inmates already pursuing<br />

their PhD at the Kirikiri<br />

Maximum Pris<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

The C<strong>on</strong>troller of Pris<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

Lagos Command, Mr. Tunde<br />

Ladipo, disclosed this in an<br />

interview in Lagos, yesterday.<br />

According <strong>to</strong> him, there is<br />

renewed interests in educati<strong>on</strong><br />

am<strong>on</strong>g the inmates across the<br />

various pris<strong>on</strong>s in the state.<br />

He said the progress and<br />

courage exhibited by the two<br />

PhD inmates at the maximum<br />

pris<strong>on</strong> had sparked off a new zeal<br />

for academic pursuit am<strong>on</strong>g other<br />

inmates.<br />

In his words: “The command is<br />

committed in ensuring that no<br />

inmate is left behind in terms of<br />

educati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>as</strong> this is part of the<br />

reformati<strong>on</strong> we are carrying out.<br />

“Around May or June, two of<br />

the inmates, who have acquired<br />

their M<strong>as</strong>ters degrees enrolled<br />

for their PhD in the newlyestablished<br />

Nati<strong>on</strong>al Open<br />

University of Nigeria, NOUN,<br />

centre at the Kirikiri facility.<br />

“One of the inmates is studying<br />

Business Management and the<br />

other Peace and C<strong>on</strong>flict<br />

Resoluti<strong>on</strong>. The Vice Chancellor<br />

of NOUN, who pers<strong>on</strong>ally<br />

presented them with the letter<br />

approving their PhD courses said<br />

it is tuiti<strong>on</strong> free.<br />

“To us, this is ground<br />

breaking and very<br />

encouraging, <strong>as</strong> they have<br />

shown that they are not<br />

limited by the situati<strong>on</strong> they<br />

find themselves. And that is<br />

part of the essence of our <strong>on</strong>going<br />

reformati<strong>on</strong> across the<br />

pris<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

“As a result of this, the<br />

command is also witnessing<br />

an incre<strong>as</strong>e of enrollment of<br />

inmates in<strong>to</strong> various<br />

categories of learning at the<br />

various pris<strong>on</strong>s schools.<br />

“We are indeed happy with<br />

the establishment of the new<br />

NOUN Centre at the Kirikiri<br />

Pris<strong>on</strong>, with state-of-the art<br />

facilities such <strong>as</strong> ultra modern<br />

and well-s<strong>to</strong>cked library,<br />

computers and air<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>ers.”<br />

He said 157 inmates across<br />

the pris<strong>on</strong>s in the state have<br />

registered for the sec<strong>on</strong>d<br />

series of the West African<br />

Senior School Certificate<br />

Examinati<strong>on</strong>, WASSCE, for<br />

private candidates.<br />

Giving a breakdown of the<br />

statistics of the inmates from<br />

the various facilities, he said<br />

that 91 of the inmates were<br />

from the Ikoyi Pris<strong>on</strong>s, 12 from<br />

the Female Pris<strong>on</strong>s, 14 from<br />

the Medium and 40 from the<br />

Maximum Pris<strong>on</strong>s.<br />
