IBADAN—A
27-year-old
suspected ritualist, Sodiq
Rasheed, caught with three
human skulls, was among 36
suspects paraded yesterday by
Oyo State Police Command.
Rasheed was arrested by the
anti-crime patrol team of the
Iyaganku Area Command along
Ijebu-Ode/Idi Ayunre Road.
According to Oyo State
Commissioner of Police, Mr.
Abiodun Odude, he exhumed the
skulls from a cemetery in Omi-
Adio area of the State.
He told Vanguard: “I am a tree
cutter. I went to work for Alfa
Hadi. He did not like my financial
condition, so he said he was going
make me rich. Alfa Hadi
requested me to bring the parts
for the sole purpose of moneymaking
ritual.
“I went to the cemetery to dig
up the skulls. I was on my way to
deliver them, when I was arrested
by the Police.”
Parading the suspects at the state
Police Command Headquarters,
Eleyele, Ibadan, Odude said the
command, in the last three weeks,

Other suspects arrested were
allegedly involved in various
offences ranging from money ritual,
robbery, fraudulent activities,
diversion of goods to cross-border

armed bandits, among others.
Also paraded was a notorious
gang of fraudsters, who
allegedly specialised in
obtaining goods from
unsuspecting victim using fake
bank SMS alert.
The gang members,
numbering about six, according
to the Police, fraudulently
obtained 33,000 litres of diesel
from one Alhaji Yusuf
Owodunmi in Apapa, Lagos.
“The gang, through the use
of fake SMS bank alerts,
defrauded Alhaji Owodunni of
N7,194,000. The suspects made
frantic efforts to dispose the
goods in Ibadan before luck ran
out of them and were
subsequently arrested by the
command,” the Police boss
added.
Items recovered from the
suspects include one AK-47
military rifle, three TV sets and
one big generator.
Others are a truck of 33,000
litres of diesel, a diverted
truckload of noodles, five
vehicles, mobile phones, one
pump action gun with five
cartridges, watches and a power
generator.
Another man shot dead in Ado-Ekiti

ADO-EKITI—BARELY four
days after the killing of
Bunmi Ojo, Personal Assistant
to ex-governor Segun Oni by
unknown assailants, another
man was shot dead in broad
daylight in Ado-Ekiti, yesterday.
The identity of the latest victim
of the unknown gunmen could
not be ascertained at press time.
Sources at the scene said the
man was shot at a junction close
to the end of the newlyconstructed
overhead bridge at
the Okesa/Ojumose Area of
Ado-Ekiti at 5:30p.m.
According to the eyewitnesses,
the victim, who was said to be
riding on a commercial
motorcycle popularly called
Okada, was trailed by the
gunmen, who ordered the
commercial motorcyclist
conveying the victim to stop.
They, thereafter, immediately
shot him and sped off.
The body of the dead
passenger was said to have been
moved to an unknown hospital
by sympathisers, who thought
he could survive.
When newsmen got to the
scene of the incident at about
6p.m., bloodstains were noticed
all over the scene.
The incident led to the closure
of many shops in and around
nearby Bisi Market as traders,
who either witnessed or got
wind of the killing, hurriedly left
for their homes.
When contacted, the Police
Public Relations Officer of the
state command, DSP Caleb
Ikechukwu, said the command
was yet to be briefed by the
Divisional Police Officer of Okesa
Division.
He promised to speak on the
attack as soon as he gets
information.
157 prison inmates to write
WASSCE, 2 pursue PhD
THE Lagos Prisons Command
says education behind bars is
getting more interesting with two
of its inmates already pursuing
their PhD at the Kirikiri
Maximum Prisons.
The Controller of Prisons,
Lagos Command, Mr. Tunde
Ladipo, disclosed this in an
interview in Lagos, yesterday.
According to him, there is
renewed interests in education
among the inmates across the
various prisons in the state.
He said the progress and
courage exhibited by the two
PhD inmates at the maximum
prison had sparked off a new zeal
for academic pursuit among other
inmates.
In his words: “The command is
committed in ensuring that no
inmate is left behind in terms of
education, as this is part of the
reformation we are carrying out.
“Around May or June, two of
the inmates, who have acquired
their Masters degrees enrolled
for their PhD in the newlyestablished
National Open
University of Nigeria, NOUN,
centre at the Kirikiri facility.
“One of the inmates is studying
Business Management and the
other Peace and Conflict
Resolution. The Vice Chancellor
of NOUN, who personally
presented them with the letter
approving their PhD courses said
it is tuition free.
“To us, this is ground
breaking and very
encouraging, as they have
shown that they are not
limited by the situation they
find themselves. And that is
part of the essence of our ongoing
reformation across the
prisons.
“As a result of this, the
command is also witnessing
an increase of enrollment of
inmates into various
categories of learning at the
various prisons schools.
“We are indeed happy with
the establishment of the new
NOUN Centre at the Kirikiri
Prison, with state-of-the art
facilities such as ultra modern
and well-stocked library,
computers and air
conditioners.”
He said 157 inmates across
the prisons in the state have
registered for the second
series of the West African
Senior School Certificate
Examination, WASSCE, for
private candidates.
Giving a breakdown of the
statistics of the inmates from
the various facilities, he said
that 91 of the inmates were
from the Ikoyi Prisons, 12 from
the Female Prisons, 14 from
the Medium and 40 from the
Maximum Prisons.
